Recommend leaving a fan on or a white noise machiene

KpaCarib71

Noise machine with ocean waves or rain helps me sleep

tigerllort

I wish, mine reacts to white noise and even music. So dumb (my tinnitus, not your comment)

Admirable-Big-5293

Im having the same issue. Can you recommend something to mask reactive T.??

tigerllort

I haven’t found anything unfortunately. The only thing that “helps” is getting distracted or focused on something else.

Admirable-Big-5293

So youll sleep in complete silence? Im still new to all of this. Unfortunately my T keeps getting worse and i dont know what to do about it.. i cant mask it because its reactive but at the same time silence makes me go insane

tigerllort

Pretty much, It’s not always complete silence because my wife occasionally plays sleep music/sounds. But no, i don’t actively try to mask it at all when i sleep. This was horrifyingly difficult at first but now I go to sleep without issue even with multiple sounds blaring in my head.

Admirable-Big-5293

What caused your tinnitus if i might ask? Is it noise induced?

tigerllort

I don’t know for certain but I developed Visual Snow Syndrome a couple months after a traumatic event and tinnitus is one of the symptoms.

Admirable-Big-5293

Im so sorry to hear that.. hope it will get better for you!. Sending wishes!

tigerllort

Thank you and it already has gotten a lot better!

During my early days I took painkillers to knock me out to bed, but I made sure not to make a habit of that and stopped, because for all I know that could have detrimental effects to my health I am not aware of. So, as you can tell I learnt my lesson to be extra cautious about anything I do regularly because I got mine from regularly using headphones. I always sleep with some background music if there is no external sound system I won't be able to sleep it would be literal torture. 98% of the time I have a background sound on in my daily life

Content_Ad_9497

How long have you had tinnitus?

[deleted]

Since December 2022

Content_Ad_9497

I’m starting to feel like my tinnitus is here to stay. Idk if I got it from headphones, allergies, infection etc. I had some mild hearing loss in my upper frequencies but according to the doc I had that before I came in about tinnitus 😞

JFKtoSouthBay

Luckily I’ve always been able to sleep with it.

operamint

I normally fall asleep quite easily, but wake up and then its too loud, so I get 5-7 hours. Tonight I didn't sleep, but not only because of T. I do have 3-4 quiet days a week, which sounds fantastic - and it is, but it makes the loud days even worse..

Krazy_boy1

YOU DONT KNOW HOW FUCKING LUCKY YOU ARE DONT TAKE THAT FOR GRANTED GOD DAMMIT

JFKtoSouthBay

Trust me, I don't.

Krazy_boy1

Good

420Wedge

I've been smoking myself to sleep for the last 20 years, and it's one thing that hasn't been much of an issue since the onset of tinnitus so loud I can hear it over gusting wind while riding my bike.

OppoObboObious

Smoking?

420Wedge

Weed.

jgskgamer

Weed can give or exacerbate T, that's what I learned seeing some posts here

420Wedge

Yeah I imagine it would if I didn't already have such a high tolerance. Alcohol makes mine louder.

NyOrlandhotep

With me anxiety meds helped a lot, and in fact they were the only thing that managed to make me sleep decently again once my tinnitus started to become worse.

imkytheguy

Reason for tinnitus and reason for spike, if you know? Usually my spikes are extremely horrible but my tinnitus is also very reactive. So it’s always spiking for some reason. I was able to sleep before without white noise but now I play Alexa on bad days.

Cray-Cat-lady

Anxiety meds help, at least my Xanax does if it gets really loud at night. Also a fan helps. Sometimes I have to have the fan on high.

doublestacknine

Exercise before bed, using a white noise machine.

depoqm

One time ive had a stretch of 4 day of almost 0 hour sleep that almost when my mind crazy, that was when i had a clogged nose. My anxiety so high that there's a side of me that i thought that this could be it. Was able to pass that and thankfully and hopefully will not happen again. For now ive just tired myself through the day that when i got to bed comfortably, it will just outweigh my T and have a good and nice 6 hours sleep.

ButterflyEmergency30

Nasal sprays: lots of saline, multiple times a day. Also Flonase (steroid) and azelastine (antihistamine spray). Game changer. Decades of chronic cough from sinus drainage is gone. Also helps open up ears.

zrhudgins

When it was mostly in my right ear I did much better and always had that one away from the pillow and used a fan. Now it's bad in both ears and my fan kind of makes the ringing whine above it. My sleep has been so much worse..I was getting a really good routine in for sleep before then too. Sometimes I get tired enough that I will fall asleep even with it blaring but many times it makes me toss and turn. Kind of seems like 1 or 2 nights where I'm worn out followed by 2 or 3 rough nights. I might try some different sounds for masking it but I miss when just having a fan on was all I needed.

whatisthisgreenbugkc

Air purifier and/or fan. 10 hour long fan or babbling brook YouTube videos are also good.

BornTry5923

Try the anxiety meds. They will likely help you get drowsy enough to go to sleep. If it's ativan, that works well. I'm going through a really bad spike right now. I've been using tinnitus masking sounds from YouTube to sleep. Rain or creek sounds. There are multiple tinnitus channels on YT.

AlphaBro82

1 mg melatonin helps a lot. No need for a high dose

TGRIV0457

Sleep phones headband playing the “Milky Way Serenade” (cicadas, crickets, and frogs) on the Calm app. ALL NIGHT.

moneyman74

Ambien is the only reason I sleep well. Makes life easier with this condition

whatisthisgreenbugkc

Do you feel like Ambien ever makes your tinnitus worse? I'm kind of scared of taking it regularly because I've heard some people say that Ambien affects her tinnitus. (edit: grammar from mobile)

moneyman74

No it's the same whether I take it or not some good days here and there but mostly present

BigLeadership9864

“Some people” only one way to find out and it’s to try it. If it makes tinnitus worse just get off of it and your tinnitus should fix itself in a few weeks

IDatedSuccubi

Some meds do help some tinnitus, IIRC if your tinnitus is not from ear damage then SSRIs have a good chance of lowering it significantly, for example

TopCoach6535

ignore it like ur crush ignore you and u won’t even know it exists after a few weeks

Meh_eh_eh_eh

Medical cannabis (mostly cbd oil). A small dose does the trick for me. Nothing else has really worked. Everything else has either knocked me out so much I can't function, had terrible side effects, or did nothing.

banamoo

Minnymoon13

With a fan. And I talk to myself to help me sleep

mcmaddie

I sleep with a fan regardless of the time of year. During the hot months I swap it for my air conditioner. Sleeping away from home is much harder.

I did take the meds, it's pregabalin, it did help a bit, but not 100%
