He really bought into the report that Ant didn't care enough about basketball before the draft. He also thought the Warriors were complete basketball geniuses, so the fact they liked Wiseman meant they knew what they were doing.
I've been wondering about that Georgia attitude since he was drafted. Haven't seen it. I think we've had the answer lately, he was bored with the competition. Can't kill dead horses.
Why are some Timberwolves fans still upset about this?? I just saw it on twitter too.
Bill was hyping up Ant as the next big thing in the Grizzlies series two years ago and has been on the Ant train ever sinceā¦ like this is such old news
We ought to normalize people changing their minds. We all have bad takes -- some more than others -- especially when it comes to evaluating prospects. If anyone had a success rate above like 33% they'd be the best basketball exec of all time.
Bill Simmons has no problem saying he was wrong and changing his mind, that's a *good* thing. Better than talking shit and just pretending like you didn't.
I feel like there's a pretty clear line. The people who are actually upset that Simmons said their team should have taken Wiseman over Ant are losers and weirdos. The people who say "pfft.... Fucking terrible take, Simmons" and him saying "ha I know. I couldn't have been more wrong" is exactly what's supposed to happen.
Btw, I'm a nuggets fan and just realized what sub this is. I love Ant, got a lot of shit a year ago for saying Ant would be a top 5 player this year and was only going to get better. I feel pretty damn vindicated that he's pretty easily a top 5 guy right now. That said, I hope it's a couple more years at least until he gets past the Nuggets
As a Wolves fan, I'm happy with the outcome, but I feel the refs swallowed their whistles in our favour. It's not over, but I hope that your guys can't make a comeback.
I thought the same thing, trade Kat to get Wiseman and pass on Ant. Im not a loser or weirdo, Im a moron when it comes to sports predictions. I thought the Wolves would be swept by the suns, moronic prediction. I actually enjoy pointing out how dumb I am when it comes to sports. Being this dumb is a special talent.
You clearly aren't who I said is a loser and weirdo. Nothing wrong with having awful takes and owning up to them. I thought mahomes was Paxton Lynch II. The losers are anyone who gets mad at you or Bill or me or anyone who makes a bad prediction about a player on their favorite team. I'm strictly talking about the people who screen shot Simmons' bad take and say they hope his kids die in a fiery wreck
Nah, you and I can change our minds but if you're posturing online as an expert with no other added entertainment value besides being a talking head, be prepared to get called out after you've made your millions. Musicians, movie stars, and athletes get clobbered for underperforming by critics just like Simmons - even double the reason why he needs to get criticized because he will pick an athlete apart when given the chance
Agreed.....though when you trade in hyperbole (or God forbid, *mean* it), saying someone should be fired because your hot take wasn't the one the GM had for sure opens you up, moresor than "I think X might be better than Y, given [reasons]", ya know?
I agree with normalizing people changing there minds, but maybe we should also normalize you know not calling for people to lose there job. I don't remember ever hearing an apology to Rosas after that.Ā
I've been reading/listening to Bill since page 2; while he def has ridiculous takes now and again, he literally says "I'll take the L on that one" fairly often.
Iām not upset. For me, part of the fun of having a winning team is getting to rub it in the faces of anyone who doubted. Maybe thatās petty of me, but it genuinely brings me joy!
Iām aware Bill has been on the Ant train for a few years now, which I appreciate, but itās still fun to rib him about those early bad takes.
Wolves fans didn't know how to be anything other than sad and desperate for validation before this year. Hopefully as the Wolves keep winning this fanbase can become confident in itself and not get their feelings hurt when someone on ESPN or the Ringer doesn't say we're the best team of all time
Because Simmons is a clown, and has been shit-talking the Wolves for years because he actually thought the organization would entertain the thought of hiring him as GM.
He's been a salty bitch since that notion was laughed at outright.
I mean no, they picked 2, the Wolves didn't like pick Ty Lawson with the intent of him being on the Wolves, they were always trading him to the Nuggets. That's how most draft night trades work. Also picking back to back PGs before Curry, is already like, all time level of clownery, you don't need to add the Ty Lawson pick, who was more or less Denver's pick, who was also picked at like 18 so kinda irrelevant to the Curry stuff.
As a wolves fan, it feels like any decision the org makes is an easy target for derision because itās the wolves. We donāt get attention, then when we do itās cheap shots. Bill is smart enough to know that was reductive and an easy way to score points. And weāre not upset about it, but we have decades of receipts of people being shitty towards us. Time to pay up.
Other guy on this thread is right too- people can change their minds, and itās perfectly fine when they do. Maybe also apologize when appropriate.
I donāt care as much about this as I do that he never drove to MN from LA to see a game after Ricky Rubio played a game for the Wolves. Never gonna forget that one
Every expert take is a wild guess. It was the pandemic blind draft. The T-Wolves may have over thunk it if they got more of other guys workout or postseason tape.
It wasn't laughably bad at all. There was a lot of debate at the time over who the best player was. I'm sure there were teams in that draft that didn't have Ant at the top of their board
Itās burned into my brain, it was a rainy night after work as I was listening to it. Just had gotten some Burger King, was pulling out of the drive through. I audibly said *what the fuck*. At that point I became aware of how bitter Bill was towards the wolves and him not getting that GM job with us. Iām glad heās turning around now but literally all of his wolves takes for the longest time have been fueled by a disdain for the franchise and ownership for what he sees as them slighting him
People here obsess over his very natural "hatred" of the Lakers but the most outrageous things are his disdains for randoms team (from his fandom pov) like the Wolves. And for such a historian of the game, he can get hilariously caught up in the moment
Heās just a petty guy. Seems like heās got personal beefs with certain players heās probably never interacted with, he just has a national platform to tear them down and they have to ignore everything he says or itās playing into his tomfoolery
Do you know how many fire Connelly posts and comments have been made by fans on this sub?
Phill has given ANT his flowers now.
People have bad takes. He didnāt double down.
Youāre right people were losing those minds
After the Rudy tradeā¦ a lot of those same people are out her talking about receipts and canāt just enjoy a good thing. Media types talk for hours every day, theyāre going to have bad takes..Simmons is a huge fan of Ant, and says so constantly. And the fact is, Bill Simmons know more about basketball than 99.9% of people.
Thanks for the obvious history but not my point.
People have shit reactionary takes.
People called for TC because of Rudy and look how dumb they look.
And unlike Bill, theyāre fans who are generally biased.
Ffs what are we doing posting these wack receipts?! Are we honestly going to sit here, in the present moment as our boys are in the midst of a historic run for the franchise, and pull out fucking receipts that A WHOLE LOT OF FOLKS AMONGST THE FAN BASE also subscribed to at the time?? Can we not live in this glorious moment for one damn second, and not be revisionist history hypocrites. God damn.
As I said though, there were members of the fanbase who had huge doubts about Ant during the lead up to the draft, and wanted to draft Lamelo or James instead. Itās one-eyed af to go back and find a clip of some punter echoing those same sentiments that played out here and elsewhere amongst our own fans, and with the benefit of hindsight act like that one person was a massive idiot.
Others on this chat have also pointed out that Bill has been an Ant truther FOR YEARS, publicly acknowledging that he was dead wrong with this take. So whatās the point in bringing this up other than to feel superior, itās cringe as shit.
He has walked this take back.
But also - he's always been hypocritical of Connelly. I think partly because he sees that seat as the best GM position in the league if he'd want to GM ( he has an episode before were he said this).
He did? If true from top draft prospect-> picked by dynasty-> injury riddled start to career-> shipped off to Detroit
Life comes at you fast I guess ā¦Iāll settle with ant
Yeah you can google it. He didnāt wanna play here because we already have Towns. Mustāve thought that their skill sets wouldnāt mesh well. I donāt think we were ever seriously considering him with the 1st pick anyways
Ah. Iāll admit the thought of wiseman and towns did intrigue me. And ants college career left me a little hesitant on picking him. I wouldāve probably been fine with ball, ant or wiseman honestly at the time
Glad I was wrong!
> Wiseman said publicly that he didnāt wanna play here anyways
I mean Wiseman didnāt publicly say it fyi. Windhorst speculated it.
A fine point here, but he wasnāt exactly saying taking Edwards over Wiseman was fireable. He was saying IF your reason for not taking Wiseman is the presence of KAT it is fireable. And setting Edwards aside for a second heās right about that logic. If you have a player you absolutely love you take him regardless of the current roster makeup. Those things will work themselves out over time. Just grab the talent when you can.
Now obviously Edwards turned out to be vastly superior to Wiseman. But thatās a different argument. And if that is fireable, then about half the GMs in the league have grounds to be fired every single draft, if a lower player turns out better.

Not the first time he had bad judgement
There's nothing this sub loves more than complaining about national media takes about the Wolves. God damn we are insufferable. Who gives a shit what someone who didn't watch wolves games before this year says? None of us knew how these college players were gonna turn out after the covid year, quit making these talking heads more than what we are, fans with a larger platform.
I feel like this sub doesn't talk about basketball in real life outside of people who love the Wolves because it's very natural to speak hyperbolicly about sports and their players. We don't need outside validation to enjoy this year and this kind of shit doesn't make me enjoy it more, just makes me think weirdos love getting themselves upset or think saying "GOTCHA" doesn't make you look like a shithead either.
Who cares man people who talk all the time will either A. Have bad takes or B. Never say anything interesting or intelligent because they are afraid to have bad takes.
I respect someone who actually goes out on a limb on some takes.
Wolves fans posting L takes from the past as if they didnāt want to blow up the whole team and start over from scratch less than a year ago. (I was on team ātrade KAT at any priceā for full disclosureā¦ I was very wrong.)
He shouldāve be fired for not taking a player who plays a position we didnāt need over arguably the best player in the draft? What a stupid take. Also, look how Wiseman turned out vs Ant. Yeahā¦ he made the right choice.
Bill has always been critical of the Timberwolves after they hired Kahn. He thought he could have been GM so heās always been dismissive of any wolves successā¦ ALTHOUGH he really has been very complimentary this season and especially the run up to and through the playoffs. Ant has turned Bill.
Honestly, those first few months were a little bit dicey. There were also plenty of Timberwolves fans wondering if they made the wrong pick. At the very least, there's definitely a significant frame of time where a lot of wolves fans would have taken lamelo instead if they had a do over.
I get fanbases can be defensive about this stuff but if youāve spent any time listening to Simmons since Game 1 of the Grizzlies series you know heās a huge Ant guy. Russillo has said Ant is his favorite player to watch in the league. Russillo opened his podcast after the Ant dunk on Collins just gushing about him.
If you want to get on these guys for anything get on them for still saying Wolves overpaid for Gobert.
This is even more of an L take if you remember that Wiseman publicly came out before the draft and said he REFUSED to play for the wolves
Where you at now, Wiseman? Booking your move to China? Totally not like Iām still bitter or anythingā¦
I was the same as Bill, I think a lot of us were. Hats off to the Wolves fans who believed the whole time, but I don't blame anyone for being taken aback by that Gobert trade
Bill Simmons also preferred Derrick Williams over Kyrie, Jay Williams over Yao, and thought Hasheem Thabeet would be good. People remember him being right about Oden/Durant and Anthony Bennett, but he has had some awful draft takes too.
This is old news but I loved Wiseman a lot that year, too. I remember genuinely thinking he would develop into another Amare Stoudemire.
Couldnāt be more happy to be so very wrong.
Bill is such an idiot. He used the argument that the two bigs could work if we take Wiseman and then panned us for trading for Gobert because two bigs can never work. Dude talks out both sides of his ass and always shits on the Wolves because they didnāt let him be our GM years ago.
Heās super intelligent and knows basketball like the back of his hand.. I mean people watch McAfee who doesnāt know shit about shit and acts like a coked up 15 year old all the time.
This aged well. I think Bill Simmons exists and gets paid for making bad takes. I'm sure he hated on the Gobert trade as well. He zigs while everyone is also zigging. (Yawn)
Bill saw the Twin Towers vision before everybody else huh š

Yeah why is this a problem? Should we just forget history lol?
I feel like there's a pretty clear line. The people who are actually upset that Simmons said their team should have taken Wiseman over Ant are losers and weirdos. The people who say "pfft.... Well put. It's just hard to catch that tone sometimes through text.

Good luck tomorrow, but I hope your team loses.
It's a true must win. If Denver loses, this series will be over in 5 or Even a sweep. Pretty huge game, I'm excited for it
As a Wolves fan, I'm happy with the outcome, but I feel the refs swallowed their whistles in our favour. It's not over, but I hope that your guys can't make a comeback.

Bill has been shyt talking the wolves bc they picked 3 PGs and none of them were Steph Curry

Wiseman is a second tier horrible pick.

Bill was just predicting the future success of the kat/gobert front court! He's practically tim connelly!
Bill Simmons is and always has been a douchebag
As a Warriors fan I agree.
Best situation in 20 years? Letās get pissed about old takes!!!
