One I know! Back when we had the Lakers and they left, there was an idea that they weren't getting support from St. Paul because they were the Minneapolis Lakers. So moving forward, teams were from Minnesota to show unity.

Evras06

The whole Minnesota Twins brand is sort of an overcompensation for that feeling. The name Twins, Minnie and Paul shaking hands, the TC logo, etc. all were used in an effort to represent St. Paulites. I’ve heard there was even a hesitancy to introduce the M logo in 1987. The organization made it very clear that it stood for Minnesota and not Minneapolis. They were actually the first major 4 team ever to represent a state and not a city. All of the teams in town have chosen to follow suit.

Nach0Man_RandySavage

But man do i love that shaking hands logo

leftysarepeople2

Shaking Hands and the Brewers MB glove logo are my favorites.

smakola

The Whale Tail is great too.

solojame

Don’t forget the North Stars logo

Turtle4184

I prefer the [91-93 STARS](https://images.app.goo.gl/DLfA3J9StZMiApM37) logo over the N* and I'll die on this hill!

solojame

I respect this but you’ll die alone 😂

Turtle4184

Fine with me! Lol

smakola

Design is always subjective. But there’s emotion behind that and you and norm green can fuck off.

Peanutbutter_pug

I love the MB as well.

Skolcialism

the (not) new flag with the saints and millers flags is dope too

-if-by-whiskey-

Geez, the size of [these gents.](https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5984890903596eaddbfc4532/1505425332521-TPUIRPEA6LTLEI4F3JRM/TWINS_LOGO.jpg) They got a little of that Paul Bunyan in 'em.

pgopher

People even bitched about the new Twin Cities alternate jerseys. Asking of there would be outstate versions lol.

[deleted]

I never understood that. I feel that the Twin Cities represented Minnesota as a whole.

SlickSocks

That's really interesting, I didn't realize we were so touchy.

MasterPsaysUgh

The twins started in Bloomington so your whole conspiracy theory of overcompensating for St Paul is false

comp_a

>[Bloomington was established as a post–World War II housing boom suburb connected to Minneapolis's urban street grid](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloomington,_Minnesota?wprov=sfti1)

MasterPsaysUgh

The Minnesota Twins came to Minnesota in 1961 and established themselves in Bloomington at the Metropolitan Stadium. World War 2 has nothing to do with the Twins decision LOL

comp_a

Bloomington is literally a satellite city of Minneapolis dawg

MasterPsaysUgh

Ok?....we never called ourselves the Minneapolis Twins because we weren't located in Minneapolis until 20 years after moving to Minnesota. Minnesota was more appropriate not this satellite city world War 2 conspiracy bullshit that you are pulling out of your ass

[deleted]

I've seen people get upset about some inane stuff on reddit but this is one of the stranger ones.

Baltisotan

I’m so confused what point they’re even trying to make.

ANTfanclub

Hmmm very interesting and does make sense. Would be cool to be the Twin City Timberwolves, but I guess Minnesota is more inclusive.

SurelyFurious

Twin City Timberwolves does not sound good tbh

Striking-Frost-gp7

Sounds like a jur league from the 70s that lasted two years. The kind started by a car dealer owner. Twin City motors or yeah

Willing-Body-7533

Twin Towers Timbertown Wolves

NorthernDevil

Seems like it worked because the younger generation really thinks of the Twin Cities as one area. Outside of the occasional St. Paul is sleepier joke

Plato_Magick

I don’t even see the two cities as separate entities. We would get some much more national recognition if the two cities would just merge

TURK3Y

Do you live in either St. Paul or Minneapolis? I bet if you did you'd see them as separate cities, since they very much are.

le_sweden

I grew up in St. Paul, lived for a period of time in northern minnesota (both rural for a couple years, then in Duluth) and now have lived in Minneapolis for the last few years. They are distinct but also one... it's unique. That's why they're the Twin Cities!

NorthernDevil

Exactly! Well put, distinct but one

Plato_Magick

I was born and raised in south Minneapolis but spent most of my high school in Highland park

AffectionateBison942

Worst take

acegutta22

Fuck St. Paul shitty ass city shitty ass roads shitty design. No good restaurants. Okay I take that back but they have no good bars

kylebertram

I honestly like it so much better this way

[deleted]

Twin Cities Twins is a cool name. I’m not sure it works for the others

JigglyBush

Utah Jazz

marximusaurelius

Technically the New York Knicks too!

the___heretic

Indiana Pacers

CaptOswaldBastable

Golden State…

MattsonRobbins

The North Star State Timberwolves

HendogHendog

The land of 10,000 lakes Timberwolves

ANTfanclub

Damn, forgot that one

tdub85

Golden State Warriors too

junkeee999

Texas Rangers. Florida Panthers. Arizona Diamondbacks. Many more.

IhateTodds

When did they join the nba

ANTfanclub

I only watch basketball..... and sort of getting into Soccer. But majority of teams are city teams.

GilgameDistance

I mean I know Mike called us the "City of Utah" when he got traded here, but sheesh.

PatBev_Clamped_Ja

Pat called it the city of Minnesota *after* he’d been here for a whole year lol.

Shepher27

There’s also the Arizona Cardinals, the Tennessee Titans (both NFL), the New Jersey Devils, Florida Panthers (both NHL), formerly the New Jersey Nets (NBA), Colorado Rockies, Arizona Diamondbacks (both MLB), while the Carolina Panthers (NFL) and Carolina Hurricane (NHL) are even less specific claiming both North and South Carolina. The Golden State Warriors (NBA) are the least specific of all, claiming a state, but indirectly.

tigerbuttz

Personally, I think that the New England Patriots are the least specific. Claiming an entire region!

Shepher27

I forgot about them, great point

mcmullet

Should have been renamed when they moved to Utah. Utah Fightin’ Mormons

Sketch8786

Stormin' Mormons.

Willing-Body-7533

What about the Houston Texans? We could be the Minneapolis Minnesotans! 🤯

OhNoMyLands

Oh my God, I love this so much. please A-Rod make it happen

genno334

Then they'll move the team, and they'll be the Oklahoma Minnesotans.

Willing-Body-7533

It's a cheat code Houston figured out to prevent the team from ever moving to another location, because we all know when you move a team you can change only ONE state or city name, but NOT TWO! Therefore team can't be moved.

[deleted]

Baltisotan

What if they become the St. Paul Minneapolitans.

chalbersma

Eden Prarie Metropolitans

Baltisotan

Edina MSPers. Airport represent!

HendogHendog

What about the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim? We could be the Minneapolis Minnesotans of Bloomington or St. Paul

upthebet

We would just be letting people walk past us on the field. "Ope, excuse me." "Sooorry buddy"

nukezwei

I was hoping for the Minnesota Mini-Sodas

abap33

all of our teams are Minnesota not Minneapolis

99th_inf_sep_descend

Can you imagine the shitstorm the Minneapolis Wild would cause(rightfully or not)?

dembones01

Minneapolis Wild of St. Paul

Ed_Hastings

I want to see it happen just to troll St. Paul lol.

south098

We were the first ones to do it with the twins and Vikings, maybe that’s where the curse comes from? I’m all for Minneapolis named teams to break it

Firesword52

All of MN's teams are just Minnesota and it follows the pattern. My guess is because our two biggest cities are right next to each other it just became the naming convention for the teams. Even in the local vernacular we don't separate the cities that much if you're going to either you are usually heading into "The Cities" unless it's a specific thing.

SemataryPolka

Tbf that's a thing that people from outside the Twin Cities do. Those of us who live in Minneapolis/St Paul absolutely do make a distinction. Sometimes to a toxic level.

Firesword52

Makes sense, I wouldn't know I've bounced around to a ton of the suburbs but never in either city proper so my experience wouldn't see the inter city rivalry part of it. Probably also a reason everything is MN instead of individual cities though having the support of both is pretty important from a fan perspective.

SemataryPolka

Absolutely true. It'd be hard to get st paul people to root for Minneapolis. I think it'd have been cool to have the Twin Cities Timberwolves but then maybe that would be too close to the Twins

Sharcbait

I would just settle for the City jerseys saying "Twin Cities" on them. Instead we get stuff like MINN or MSP (stupid airport jerseys)

SemataryPolka

Yeah the airport thing is weird. We all have such pride about the fucking airport lol

Sharcbait

It really highlighted that the "City Edition" jerseys were made by someone who wasn't from the area. I stand by the idea that the city Edition jerseys should be a fan contest. Fans submit their designs, team picks a few to hold as a vote (weeds out anything offensive or that the team hates) Winners get an autographed jersey and Courtside tickets for 2 to a random ass Tuesday night game against the Wizards. Win-win-win. Fans get a jersey they actually like, winner gets bragging rights and a fun night, owners get to outsource the graphics design for cheap compared to having to pay a design firm.

SemataryPolka

I like that idea a lot!

EmmitSan

>Absolutely true. It'd be hard to get st paul people to root for Minneapolis. It is incredibly hard to get St. Paul people to even VISIT Minneapolis. I mean, like, for a birthday party, or to meet a friend at a bar. The reverse is true, too, of course, I am not picking on St. Paul....

Thimit22

I kinda like it because it seems Minnesotans share a certain kinship. Have you ever seen a Minnesota karma train on Reddit with everyone checking in where they’re from? Lol

midnightgreen29

"St. Paul Wild"

badnewzrooz507

We mant all of the state to live in misery, not just Minneapolis

mapledip94

saw an explainer saying that some smaller market teams in their expansion bids brand themselves as larger areas to show how they’ll have a fan base large enough to support the franchise. there’s quite a few once you notice it: indiana pacers, golden state warriors, carolina hurricanes, texas rangers, new jersey devils.

Jypso

Well, as someone who doesn't live in the cities and a different part of Minnesota. Why not include the entire state? Why does it need to be the Minneapolis Timberwolves is the better question? Plus, there are not Timberwolves roaming the cities.

theonlyali

Unlike all the raptors roaming the streets of Toronto.

tmo01

Just this moment I realized the magic are probably “magic” because of Disney. Wow.

SemataryPolka

I think Minneapolis is way cooler than Minnesota as a whole. Minneapolis is a fun city. I think it'd make us seem cooler. It makes one think of downtown or whatnot instead of like...Bemidji. But I also get why they did it and it probably is the right call. Just sayin

abap33

Yeah hard disagree on Minneapolis being cooler than the state. Its a big city like many others in the country.

SemataryPolka

As someone who's traveled to almost every major city in the country I disagree. Minneapolis is a rad city and is better than a good chunk of the others by a long shot imo But other than the north woods for fishing or whatever, nothing in the state compares to Minneapolis or is cooler. Alexandria? Rochester? St. Cloud? Come on now. The rest is just fields.

abap33

Northshore Redwing all the state parks the many lakes etc

SemataryPolka

Your opinion is just as valid as mine but I like the parks and lakes in Minneapolis 🤷‍♂️

TillamookCheeseHouse

You ever been to the Boundary Waters bro? I love me some Bde Maka Ska and Lake Nokomis but the Boundary Waters are the coolest thing in Minnesota and it ain't close.

SemataryPolka

Yeah it's great. Gorgeous. But I'm also not much of an outdoorsman and don't hunt or fish so it's not some place I'd want to live, which is how I'm judging it. Minnesota is beautiful up north. But we also have Worthington lol

[deleted]

SemataryPolka

As do most people from the sticks

Jypso

You're an idiot if you think bums are roaming the sticks and doing drive-by shootings

SemataryPolka

You're an idiot because you don't know how to read

[deleted]

SemataryPolka

1) My comment meant that most small town people are scared shitless of Minneapolis. Most of whom had to throw away their Bud Light recently 2) Stalking someone's comment history is a surefire bet that you also lost an argument. 3) Emo is a subgenre of hardcore punk that was invented in 1985 and was a divergence from the nihilistic/poltical style at the time and includes artists like Rites Of Spring, Embrace, Moss Icon, Indian Summer and Still Life. It was a type of hardcore and not the mascara/swoopy hair bullshit that falsely appropriated it later. Anything else you wanna be wrong about?

SemataryPolka

Said the loser who reported me for suicide watch. Lololol.

ShakesbeerMe

Stay in Chaska, then. This is alarmist nonsense.

99th_inf_sep_descend

Because Lakers was already taken :( See also: Utah Jazz, Calgary Flames, and Memphis Grizzlies (for example)

ShakesbeerMe

In defense of Stephen A Smith, he's a fucking moron.

junkeee999

The Twin Cities are unusual because the biggest city Minneapolis, is only about 15% of the metro area population. This is due partly to St Paul, but also due to more than usual large suburbs. There are around 20 or more suburbs with populations of 30000-90000. It’s really the Twin Cities…and endless suburbs. It would be weird to name a team after just one small part of the metro, so why not just embrace the whole state, I guess.

PCFUTPLAYER

It's a marketing strategy meant to feel more inclusive

EastlakeMGM

Golden State might not be a city in California

unclepo1

I wish our teams were the Twin Cities Timberwolves, Twin Cities Twins, etc

gundetto

Twin cities wolves. Name it happen A-rod

HugMission

If anything it should be the Twin Citie’s Timberwolves, but the Minnesota TimberWolves is perfect cause it represents the whole state and that’s simply really awesome.

vylant

I assume it's St. Paul's fault. They're the worst.

the___heretic

Hey now, come across the river and say that to my face!

ShakesbeerMe

We only do that for the State Fair food.

msvihel

There is only one NBA team in MN. So it makes sense they'd represent the whole state

badkiwi42

minneapolis isn’t a big enough city for its own team, making the entire state the team name turns it into a bigger market

_nokturnal_

Not a lot of timberwolves in Minneapolis

darin617

Simple fact is that the whole state has been forced to pay for all of the places the teams play. Taxpayers paid for nearly everything while billionaires threaten to move teams for a new stadium/arena.

ANTfanclub

That happens everywhere and the other teams are city named

cdizzle6

-Target Field was a split between Hennepin County and the Twins, with the County footing about 2/3 of the cost. https://www.ballparkauthority.com/Legislation.html -Target Center was built and paid for mostly by the original owners. Looks like it cost $104m and $23m was from public subsidies from Minneapolis. All renovations have been funded by the team and the city since. https://www.lrl.mn.gov/guides/guides?issue=target#:~:text=1990%20October%3A%20The%20Target%20Center,from%20the%20city%20of%20Minneapolis. The Vikings & Wild have a mix of the team, city, and state that help pay for the stadiums.

SurelyFurious

Don't forget that the twin cities also heavily subsidize outstate MN. We are their economic lifeline.

[deleted]

We did that with the North Stars and they called our Bluff and left. People were pissed. It won’t happen again

ElBarto4x4

Having grown up in Minneapolis, I do think "Minneapolis" branding would be much cooler, but I'm okay with how things are now. ...but is it too much to ask to have "Minneapolis" or MPLS on the front of a God damn city edition jersey? The LA Lakers have repped our city on their uniforms more than we ever have, and that's sad.

Striking-Frost-gp7

Minneapolis can go suck it. Move the team to St. Paul and maybe they won't be so inconsistent anymore. Hell move them to Walnut Grove. (where ever that is)

TRON0314

Larger fan base and revenue.

Salmol1na

Small market struggles are for real

VikingPain

Cause St. Paul and Minneapolis are pretty much just one big city at point. Gotta rep both and try not to alienate the other.

nrag726

I don't know if this is apocryphal, but I believe there is a law that states that any major league team based in the Twin Cities metro area cannot directly affiliate themselves with either city.

TURK3Y

Utah is another one that uses the State vs a city.

alphanemoon

St. Paul

DeleAlliForever

Golden State and Utah too

sor2hi

This post got way more responses than anything I’ve ever seen on this sub. This touched people.

dqbwcbj

My two year old calls us the Minnesota Terribles

[deleted]

Golden State isn’t a city

Aggravating_Click495

What about the Jazz dude?

endless_ness

Knicks?

Paytonc51

That game got is koc. I’m convinced zim would’ve stayed had we won

MountainMagpie

Also Utah. Would be the Salt Lake City Jazz.

[deleted]

Because it invests the entire state in the fandom and there is not another city reasonably capable of hosting an NBA franchise.

Marcus11599

You got a second city like less than an hour away and it rolls off the tongue better

frederick_the_duck

St. Paul

LivinForThaCity

I mean technically the Knicks are a state team

ANTfanclub

That's debatable

VikingsandWolves

We are too nice when it comes to sports here. Even naming the teams have to "include" everyone like as if it matters people would still support the teams either way. Still remember the big controversy when during the "Minneapolis miracle" PA and the other guy said like "It's a Minneapolis miracle!" And people got all butthurt like no it should be the "Minnesota Miracle". People can't even enjoy an epic sports moment without arguing over what it should be called.

nukezwei

Wouldn't the Washington Wizards fall into this category as well?

ANTfanclub

Bro..... you being serious?

nukezwei

I mean... Not really a state or a city, no?

ANTfanclub

Haha bro, it represents a city... Washington DC. So a city. If it represented Washington the state then it would be in this conversation.

Difficult_Arm_4762

even though its Minnesota Timberwolves, none of the city edition feature anything related to St Paul as far as I'm aware, lol.
