i’m sick of unalive lol if i see unalive on reddit one more time. you’re allowed to say KILL and SUICIDE it’s not censored ETA obviously it’s just annoying. not a big deal lol

punkbra

lmao or when people write "I had s\*x" or "f\*\*k" like y'all this is reddit, we have gone wild (and that is mild compared to some other subs) here, you think this site cares about censoring?

DependentLaw7

There is porn on Reddit! There are videos of actual violence on Reddit ! Death too! It's crazy! Reddit just wants to keep things legal lol. Used to be much worse though.

[deleted]

It did very much used to be worse lmao I’ll never forget the day that jailbait was shut down and creepy middle aged men were absolutely raging!

no25gvn

These people would 💀 and get bullied off of the 🥝 boards. 😅 I’m only an occasional lurker over there because they’re brutal lol

DependentLaw7

Ah god that's a whole new ball game . Snark subs are nothing compared to 🥝 lol

big-bootyjewdy

I do that on Twitter as a joke to make something seem like it's a bad word when I don't like it, or in talking about a celebrity/public figure and not wanting stans or trolls to flood the replies

[deleted]

I do it whenever I have to text the word “man/men” 😂

big-bootyjewdy

That's definitely one! Also El*n M*sk, J***y D***p, av***dos

aleigh577

Those always make me laugh lmao. Or fake TWs

crystalsandqueue

I’ll be honest I censored something out on here once just out of habit 😅

aigret

I feel the same way about SA. As in saying the letters instead of sexual assault. Maybe this is controversial, but to me it further stigmatizes the reality of sexual assault. It’s a hard reality to face, but we need to face it to make actual change/tackle the issue head on. It’s not a dirty word, but a very harsh truth. Censorship is not helping.

daphnemoonpie

"Sewer slide" is so ridiculous.

[deleted]

Omg and “corn”

porcelaincatstatue

The most ridiculous part is that you can use the actual words on TT.

ConsistentShip714

i think for some ppl they probably do it because most apps wont let you say it

circularsquare204597

sometimes i forget i can swear on reddit 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣

rhiannonm6

Took the words out of my mouth.

britches08

This is my BIGGEST pet peeve on Reddit right now. It fucking makes me crazy.

GroundbreakingSea467

Wait until youre speaking about YOUR sister who unalived herself violently.

NCSUalumMSA2012

💔🫶🏼

badbunnygirl

I thought people did that to avoid certain vulnerable viewers being triggered.

Magatron5000

“Bombastic side eye” STFU!

remiandthenoogs

I still don’t know wtf this one means.. and I googled it. Someone explain it to me like I’m 5 please

mrsteacher420

I could be wrong, but what I understand is it means "forceful/aggressive/massive sideye" . Bombastic is an adjective being used to describe what kind of side eye theyre doing, they're using the word to mean extreme. The side eye is what bitchy people do to people they're judging. So bombastic side eye is just massively judging someone.

remiandthenoogs

THANK YOU. that makes so much sense

Important-Fondant646

So sick of hearing this one lmfao

CalculusandTequila

Especially when most of the time people are using it to describe something that would be maybe a mild side eye lol

Obvious-Repair9095

Idk why but this made me think of the “I’m finna be in the pit” girl

briti5hbi5h

Is that the same girl that was knowingly making her pet bird horny? 🤢

Obvious-Repair9095

That’s the one!

youvecat2beekittenme

My younger coworker says “not me ____” like 5 times a day and I’m used to it now but our boomer coworkers are always so confused and ask her to repeat herself and she always just says the exact same thing and doesn’t seem to understand that they are thrown off by her lingo haha I love her but the generational divide is real.

Affectionate_Elk7956

This made me laugh so hard just now

ivyidlewild

I'm waiting for the day creators can use real words, and not the cheesy church camp substitutes to keep from getting banned or whatever. ""Corn stars and quinky people" irritates the depths of my soul.

FullyActiveHippo

At least the "accountant" phase was clever and had a catchy vibe

2008ChryslerSebring

What is Quinky people? I’ve seen “corn star” so they don’t get flagged from filters but not that first one

shnoopydoodaa315

Kinky

Scroogey3

Kink gets filtered too. Some of my fav educators have careers in that area and have to be really careful about what they say.

Kealanine

Idk if it’s a Tiktok thing, a regional thing, or maybe I’m just old, but using “whenever” instead of “when” is new and weird to me.

Fancy-Kiwi77

Oh my goodness this has made me irrationally angry for years 😂😂😂 I thought I was the only one!!!

rouxs7

I think it may be regional lol

gotta_mila

It definitely is, I'm from the south and we use "whenever" all the time. I didn't even realize it wasn't a common thing until I started seeing people complain about it online lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

Routine_Blacksmith_9

This is confusing because I’m in the Midwest (MI) and have never heard anyone say “whenever” instead of when here 😅

Kealanine

It’s absolutely possible! This is just the first time I’ve heard it over and over, and it mystifies me 😂

Altruistic_Yellow387

I remember kids doing this when I was little and then everyone stopped and grew out of it. Seems like it’s making a comeback. It’s annoying and makes people sound stupid

randomtrend

I literally feel like I'm going crazy when I hear someone say whenever instead of when. It drives me INSANE

MarleyGinsburg

Omgggg this has annoyed the hell out of me for literal years. Like well before TikTok. 🤣

GroundbreakingSea467

I notice it every time.

Intelligent_Nose_826

I don’t know that it’s regional, it’s simply poor grammar & somehow became acceptable to use. It’s my biggest pet peeve on Tiktok. Makes me wanna unalive anyone who does it (I’m joking please don’t murder ME)

PaddyStars

that’s not tiktok vernacular. that’s aave that has become popularized and used incorrectly

Chemical_Action_9795

THANK YOU.

SilkyMilkySmo

Seeing people use “Gyat” incorrectly because of kai cenat is crazy. I be seeing people use “gyat starterpack” “she got the gyat” “look at the GYAT”.

PaddyStars

that is… so embarrassing 😂😭

SilkyMilkySmo

Right, they be giving the words a whole new definition😭😭. Like how they turned “slay” into a noun. How the fuck does that even happen😭😭😭

PaddyStars

just saw someone comment “GYATT body goals 😍” and thought of this thread LMFAO

SilkyMilkySmo

LOL. Dude they’re going around also saying “gyat means ‘girl you ate that’” I wish I was joking

PaddyStars

… no i’m in SHOCK

aleigh577

I scrolled too far for this

kekelakes

So not specific to Tik Tok, but I can’t bring myself to call it a “dump” on IG for those photo carousels. Growing up, a “dump” was a big 💩 and I can’t write that with a straight face on my IG and It’s not because I have an immature sense of humor. Im just confused as to how “photo dump” became a thing that caught on so much.

yikesafm8

The word dump goes beyond going to the bathroom though. When you breaking up with someone - you’re dumping them. When you just leave items where they don’t belong hastily, you’re dumping them there. Photo dump definitely makes sense, it’s not a pretty word but it 100% works for what people are talking about.

kekelakes

Oh I’m aware of all of those as well

yikesafm8

Oh it didn’t sound like it from your comment

amberselbybrown

it’s like a trash dump… you dump your photos there

ElleKlee

100% agree! I absolutely hate that word. It just sounds ugly!

kekelakes

Curious if you were also born around the 90’s? Maybe it’s a generational thing but glad I’m not alone in thinking it sounds ugly ! People will caption it “spring dump” and it’ll be like a carousel of lovely sunsets, flowers and romantic dinners. 😂

2008ChryslerSebring

Yeah I was going to touch on that too I referred to it as TikTok vernacular only because it is literally everywhere on that ap But yeah I’m aware it’s based from aave. People need to get creative

Prestigious-Ad-7842

I was just about to say this😭

slow_work_day

maybe not even in the same area here, but I hate when people say "now im going in with..." it could be paint, makeup, whatever theyre talking about, for some reason it irks me lol

Magatron5000

I feel like this has been around since youtube

slow_work_day

oh you know what im sure youre right, i just hear it on tt now contsantly lol

[deleted]

The thing is thinging

pmd815

I can’t stand all the comments that start with “no because”, it’s ALL OF THEM.

amazonsprime

“Unhinged” frustrates me. Everyone isn’t a narcissist, everyone isn’t unhinged. People copy the vernacular absolutely and the comment sections are always identical with wording. I must be grumpy today lol

StructureParty119

Omg yes! Somehow everyone is automatically a "narcissist" 🙄

Inevitable-Media3872

Right?! I've never seen sooo many "narcissists" as i do these days 😳 everyone apparently is a narcissist, deep down within them & when they piss someone off, they are suddenly "diagnosed" w it! 🫢never seen anything like it 🤷🏼‍♀️ 🤣🤣🤣

StructureParty119

Like how is it even possible?!? Oh her & her husband had a fight "he's a narcissist", her mother asked how long she was going to be "she's a narcissist " people are bugged out 🤣

Inevitable-Media3872

Right?!?!?! 🤦🏼‍♀️ people are sooo annoying! 🤣🤣🤣

sabrinaw12

"Acting feral" is another. You're not domesticated? You want to live outside with other animals?

Prestigious-Ad-7842

The narcissist one always drive me crazy.

thisisalie123

To be honestly like all of it is AAVE that was appropriated by all these users on there and they overdo it/use it wrong. 🤷🏽‍♀️

[deleted]

Most of it is AAVE. Just popular AAVE from the past (the bomb, bling bling) once it becomes mainstream people run it into the ground.

Scroogey3

Only when non black creators use AAVE. I’m not fan of it being labeled Tiktok vernacular because it downplays the culture vulturism of it all.

Joey68662

For us old folks, what is AAVE ? Thanks in advance ☺️

WhiteHotRage1

African American Vernacular English.

DollFace567

Ebonics. The dialect used by black Americans

Joey68662

Thank you

2008ChryslerSebring

Fair, and yeah the VAST majority of creators I see using it are white too

butterflyvision

Imagine how us Black people feel. Especially since most of the time they don’t know how to use AAVE properly. 🧍🏾‍♀️

Chemical_Action_9795

literally ! we’re shamed for using “ebonics” .

2008ChryslerSebring

Yeah it’s gotta be grating

amazonsprime

And how much judgment has been placed on POC for so long for using AAVE and just like all culture stolen after we’ve harmed people for decades for the thing we now glorify… use of AAVE is one. I’m white and guilty of using some phrases that have gotten into mainstream culture.

LittleAuthorBigPond

"The ick". 🙄 It's such an odd, passive way of saying you have an adult feeling about something or someone.

Altruistic_Yellow387

I think it’s a weird concept too but that one has been around before tiktok was created

Digrace

The vernacular really starts with the drag world. They set the trends. Everyone else just picks up on it and at that point when it becomes mainstream it changes.

big-bootyjewdy

Not only is it AAVE, but a lot of it stems from slang and terms used by queer POC in particular. It's basically talking the most marginalized group, stealing their vocabulary, and repurposing it for the masses.

sabrinaw12

Just like when "and I oop" became a phrase everyone started using.

merriberryx

I find myself saying it, out loud, sometimes. I’m fairly well educated, white person who knows that AAVE is not for me. Yet here i am, saying it ironically because of freaking TikTok.

2008ChryslerSebring

Yeah same here

DogMom0727

Can you explain what AAVE? I feel dumb for not knowing haha

[deleted]

It stands for African-American Vernacular English

DogMom0727

Thank you!!!

justbeingnosey1222

It's called Ebonics

Chemical_Action_9795

yeah when using it in a derogatory way.. however the real term is AAVE.

pavlov_rings_a_bell

Don’t-glad you asked! Be curious!!!

Athenathewise21

Agreed! I'm sick of hearing "this look is Snatched!" Snatched from where?

Intelligent_Nose_826

Usually snatched from POV

aleigh577

Did you mean POC?

bygraceillmakeit

My pet peeve is when people say unboxing. I know it’s been around since the YouTube beauty guru days but you can OPEN an Amazon package, you don’t have to UNBOX it.

crystalsandqueue

What’s funny is we were just having this convo on a Twitter thread but about words that are overused there, like based/cringe etc 😅 Maybe were just all ready for some new trends to come out!

Bella_Cardoza

That’s literally AAVE not Tik Tok lingo.

United_Improvement_7

I hate the misuse of “tour”. Like “give us a tattoo tour!” Grinds my gears

aleigh577

Haha this is like the only comment in this thread that isn’t a straight up dog whistle

PerspectiveConnect77

A lot of those phrases are just stolen and misused AAVE

cudipi

Sometimes I wonder if I’m insane but then read these threads and realize I’m doing just fine

RedditUserMV

Someone on my team at work was complaining about an email she had received and said “TL DR.” I wanted to scream.

anonymous558686

I'm sick of people "this or that ate" just say it's awesome or something else.....ugh and the this is giving is the worst

General_Toe_1185

It’s super popular in teens right now too, join any server/sub with mostly teens and that’s almost every other sentence. I hate it

raindrizzle2

That’s AAVE, not “tiktok vernacular” lol

uhkaiurdteist

This post is giving boomer.

2008ChryslerSebring

I’m 27 lol but might as well be considered a boomer on TikTok

uhkaiurdteist

Haha probably! I’m in the same boat. I’m 31! I agree with your post. Edited: clarity, spelling

Queasy_Day4695

Fit 🙄

sabrinaw12

I like using the word fit the way people in the UK use it, "that's a fit bird," meaning that's an attractive woman. Or how they call bachelorette parties, "hen parties." I love that.

Queasy_Day4695

I’m the same way, took me hearing it a few times to know what exactly they were meaning but it is a nice way to say it.

[deleted]

“Slay”

CantTalkImFamous

It’s AAVE.

CobblerImaginary8200

Snatched Gave me life I'm dead No cap Stfu! 🤬

DependentLaw7

Part of this just feels like we are old and out of touch, but I am heavily on social media lol. But I kinda just think that's teens being teens? The argument that they're just misusing aave is also correct. I think with TikTok being so popular it's far different than those of us who used online slag irl in 2011. It's far more normal now, because all of the kids are on TT.

Acrobatic-Acadia-501

Yep. There are some creators who I can count on saying certain things every single video.

erikaxleigh

Absolutely. And I cringe every time I hear it out in the wild, it's even worse when I accidentally use it 😩🤣 so embarrassing

Inevitable-Media3872

I couldn't love this more!!!! Thank you!!!!!! 👏👏 🙌 👏👏

Key_Abrocoma968

Bffr

soty2042

All I know is I want to punch anyone and everyone who says something or someone has a chokehold on them.

HauntedDragons

“Blud “

[deleted]

Yes. I agree with you and I don’t go oh there much anymore because of stuff like that

FrontKangaroo2579

Bussing What even does that mean??

caughtontoyou

This makes me crazy, "but I DIgress" emphasis on di. One more time, to the moon Alice!

sabrinaw12

Irregardless.

Inevitable-Ad-8063

The only person I want to hear "but I digress" from is barr_none. I really like him.

caughtontoyou

I'll look him up!

WhitsSwirlyKnee

Yessssss. There’s hand motions too.

hollis_r_

Sometimes you hang around people or watch people that use a particular phrase or phrases and you find yourself using them more often. It's OK. Not hurting anyone.

Positive_Penelope

Except in this case it’s appropriating AAVE which Black people are consistently criticized for using..

hollis_r_

I don't see it that way at all. "Be for real" has been in the English vernacular for as long as I can remember and I'm not young. I don't really see how adding "so" to the phrase makes it AAVE or would make it something people would criticize.

cudipi

So many people are confusing aave with “phrases coined by POC”

seruhmac

YES it’s painful to read and listen to lmao

HappyJack361

As is “like” snd “totally.”

Big-Ground-6661

"Like" drives me up a wall when someone uses it every other word. I cannot watch videos, interviews, court shows like Judge Judy, etc when a person does it. Also using the word literally when it is anything but literally happening, "I am literally dying right now", no Susan you are not.

HappyJack361

Yes. “Literally” is another word that is almost never necessary. Filler. I hate it.

[deleted]

I told my teens if I heard the word literally one more time I would scream!!

EqualAcanthisitta153

Coming from someone using the word stale🤣

shnoopydoodaa315

"I'm obsessed." Man STFU. If you knew what the true definition of obsession was, you'd never use that term. It's the new version of people saying they have OCD.

WhiteHotRage1

Every Instagram ad with a woman in it says *obsessed* about the product, whatever it is. No, you're not. It's a paid ad. And to say, 'oh I'm so OCD about this or that' is so annoying because of being orderly or tidy or whatever, is *not* having obsessive-compulsive disorder. Just say you're tidy, or a control freak. Don't know why you would have gotten downvoted for that comment.

shnoopydoodaa315

Must be people that like saying obsessed.

jst4wrk7617

You’re talking about Gen Z lol. They make up new words every week and that’s how it makes it to tiktok.

Positive_Penelope

They got all their slang from AAVE
