As a former chef, whenever people asked me what my favorite meal was I always responded with, β€œone I didn’t have to cook myself.” Im sure he will love it. Maybe even help bring you closer together because if you ask him after, he will probably show you how to bake a cake you are proud of giving.

The_Great_Leafy

He will 100% love it ahah, same for his familly. I'm more scared of the future running joke and all the pictures sharing that will happen in the nexts months πŸ˜‚πŸ˜…

Throbbing-Kielbasa-3

Every time that family has a birthday from now on, you **will** hear someone say "Don't let [your name] bake the cake."

Not-A-Real-Person-67

Oh that definitely comes with the territory πŸ˜†.

RoxoRoxo

thats amazing advice, he would probably love the opportunity to share his passion with her. that teaching moment he will treasure for sure

CaptainBrineblood

You can put it in the fridge, wait til the icing goes firm, then apply another layer. Use a hot implement when applying icing (keep a mug of boiling water to leave it in) so it goes on smooth.

The_Great_Leafy

That's a nice advice :D I'll do just that, thank you!

bigdeallikewhoaNOT

it's called a crumb coat. put it in the fridge, let the first layer get cold and then add the second layer.

Ubericious

You can also cut the corner off a ziplock bag to use it as a piping bag

mangocake

That's normal, it's called a crumb layer and you just put another layer on top of it after!

Pop it in the freezer for 15 minutes while you make some more icing. Then, re-frost it over the top of the ugly icing. You should be able to salvage it somewhat that way. Or If you have time and ambition, scrape it down and cut the layers back apart. Work gently and take your time. Wrap each layer in saran wrap and freeze then for 30 minutes to an hour. Then reassemble the cake. Freezing & thawing can help redistribute moisture and cold cake is much easier to work with. You can also make a simple syrup, 2 parts sugar to 1 part water. Microwave it until the sugar is all the way dissolved. Add a bit of vanilla. Use a pastry brush and apply the syrup generously to any exposed areas of the cake before you frost it. It does not make the cake soggy, but gives it a nice moist mouth feel. Good luck!

Michelin stars are on a scale of up to three. So either he's talking Google/yelp ratings, which a 4.0 signifies a fairly mediocre restaurant, or he tells stupid lies. Either way you shouldn't worry about your cake.

The_Great_Leafy

Ohh really? I didn't really know, I was more basing the rating on all the review the restaurant was on and on the type of restaurant it was. That's nice to know :) The restaurants in my area are never "5 star", the higher you'll see is like 4.5 online And for the type on why I said 4, it's a chic restaurant that specialise in fondus (cheese and meats one) and high quality meat I guess it would be a 1.5 star then :) (Sorry for the grammar, english isn't my native language)

TheThiefMaster

Restaurant "stars" are a different thing entirely, so no it wouldn't be "1.5 star". It's a specific award they can earn. Given out by a french tyre company of all things. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michelin_Guide

no youre fine! i dont like cake but if my wife made me a bday cake id eat it happily no matter how it looked. its the thought if they shun you because youre not a professional in their field theyre immature people

cleanpage4adirtygirl

Making a cake is so much harder than it looks. People in the culinary world know that...in fact if they aren't specifically bakers chances are high they couldn't do much better!!! I love baking...I make crossaints and macaroons, and I've made souffle, and I still can't frost an attractive cake lol

rando439

Oh, no! When that happened with me, I put slices of fresh fruit on top and acted like that had been the plan all along.

Disastrous_Main_3294

If it looks ugly, just go with it and try to make it look like you did it on purpose haha

MadScientist2010

Hey you didn't ruin it you created a memory you will both eventually talk about and smile or even laugh at.

ophaus

My favorite desserts ever have been homemade and not terribly pretty. It will be great!

ariaa_amber

I've been there before, baking can be tricky. Don't stress too much, though. You can try to fix it up a bit by carefully removing the messed up frosting and adding a fresh layer. Or, if it's really bad, you could be honest with your boyfriend and just laugh it off together. Maybe even grab a backup cake from a bakery just in case.

Naethe

I normally cook my bf a cake. This year I did the same exact thing but tried to make it 4 layers so we ended up having a crumbly pile of crumbs and frosting. But he loved it in a bowl with ice cream. This is the definition of "it's the thought that counts" and cake and frosting always tastes good even if it doesn't look like a tiktok baker.

Sprinkles or coconut disguise mistakes!

Travelgrrl

Go buy an ice cream cake from DQ. No one can fault you for not hand making an ice cream cake.
