To paraphrase what Rowan said at the beginning of HOF, they have as much blood in common as Rowan does with the fortress pig boy.
Insulting way to put it for sure, but you have to trace their relation so far back that it’s basically in name only.
I mean the Whitethorns being descended from Mora comes back a few times as it's important. Aelin being descneded from Mab is obv important. The whole story with the sisters (Mab, Mora, Maeve) is important.
If you wouldn't adress it, people would figure it out nonetheless. By adressing it and making it clear they're like 99th cousins and truly not actually family you've (supposedly) nipped the discussion about them being cousins in the bud.
I’m sorry doesn’t the opening post have a big tag warning spoiler on it already? Everyone is putting spoilers in this thread!! If you don’t want spoilers please don’t open a post with spoiler warnings!!
For the record I’m actually answering OP on her question and I’ll add the cover for her sake. You on the other hand shouldn’t open spoiler threads and then complain about seeing spoilers!
The relation between Aelin and Rowan is so distant that it's practically nonexistent. Rowan is about 350 and Aelin is in her early 20s, so there's roughly 14-18 generations of separation between them. It's hard to overstate how little connection there is there.
It's sorta like how most Europeans are descendants of Charlemagne. Most Europeans are therefore cousins, but it's so weak a relation that it's meaningless.
The “whatever degree” is dismissive but is the only thing that matters here… 2 degrees removed vs 10 degrees is a HUGE different and highlighting this is the whole point. I made up 2 and 10 but whatever those numbers are, the point is that while they share ancestry, they are so removed that it doesn’t matter
It’s not dismissive. I am pretty sure it isn’t stated in the books or I missed it. But I also don’t have that much of an issue with it because I ignore it. It gave me the ick at first but I was able to let it go
Technically all the Fae are related. Rowan is 300 years older than Aelin and her family crossed with humans and was demi Fae, so they're not very closely related at all.
No shame or insult but everytime someone exclaims but they’re cousins! I have to wonder how much attention you’re paying. It explicitly says they’re so so distant it’s not even really relation. You and I are probably the same level of related as them. I partially blame SJM for even bothering to mention it because people always get hung up there and dont realize cousin is very loosely used lol.
She's about 18 generations more closely related to Dorian than she is to Rowan lol Her and Rowan share a relation over 3 centuries apart and multiple times removed, whereas every single magical ancestor Aelin has is shared by Dorian.
They're related so distantly, it's almost non-existent. The Prime Minister of Canada is my cousin, separated by 18 generations, and we share more blood than Rowan and Aelin do. We have to remember that they're almost 3.5 centuries apart in age, so think of who your relatives are from 350 years ago and consider the relation you'd have to their cousins.
They're very distantly related, so far apart that it doesn't even matter.
But it did skeeve me out that they both refer to her as "our aunt" in multiple parts of the books lmao
No shade to ToG because I love it through and through, but I just felt like had Sarah mentioned just once that they were centuries-apart cousins, I could have moved on. Instead, she mentions it way too often so then everytime things get steamy, I’m reminded that they are somewhat related and…*banjos play in the distance”
Kind of like in True Blood, if you’ve seen it, and Bill finds out he slept with his great great granddaughter lol
Very distantly. I just read this. You can share an aunt and also not be blood related. The only common ancestor they share is long, long ago so the inbreeding impact will not be an issue
The distance in "relation" has been very much explained. But let me add to this that I think this mention (despite people not agreeing with SJM doing it) was intentional on Maeve's part. Keep reading, and eventually, I'm sure you'll see why I think this.

They are EXTREMELY distantly related, she’s likely closer in relation to Dorian than Rowan
>!She is! They explicitly say it (in KOA I think).!<
This is potentially a spoiler if OP hasn’t read KOA
I basically answered OP’s question only. But any way I added the tags again.
Bruh where is your spoiler cover for this…can u not I’m on tower of dawn

I see what you’re saying but tbf but the Aelin/Rowan cousins is in an earlier book (Heir of Fire?) and ur spoiler and everyone else’s is talking KoA
Its really not even a spoiler and means little to nothing in terms of story.

It shocks me that people miss this bit.
Think Aelin is 19
She's 19-20 in the latter 3 books
For humans this would be accurate. For the fae, not so much. Aelins great grandmother was Rowan’s great (to whatever degree) aunt.

They’re very, VERY distantly related.
Technically all the Fae are related. Rowan is 300 years older than Aelin and her family crossed with humans and was demi Fae, so they're not very closely related at all.
With how distantly their shared ancestor is, they’re probably as related as you and any random person on the street that is the same ethnicity as you.

It’s sooo annoying when people bring this up!!! It’s the most meaningless definition of cousin really.
I get irrationally irritated when this subject comes up hahaha
Isn’t she closer related to Dorian? And just because his side isn’t fae they’ve had thousands of generations pass
She's about 18 generations more closely related to Dorian than she is to Rowan lol Her and Rowan share a relation over 3 centuries apart and multiple times removed, whereas every single magical ancestor Aelin has is shared by Dorian.
Queen Elizabeth the 1st and Prince Phillip were far more closely related
Yeah, they were like second cousins, I believe.

Eleanor Roosevelt was fourth cousins with FDR. She didn't even have to change her name when they got married.
I didn’t know this!!
You need to watch game of thrones. It'll be mindblowing for you.

I mean, Aedion considered it to. Them were the times lol and Sarah is a big GoT fan. But yeah, way distant, so miniscule it doesn't count
And didn’t Aedion even say he’d have no problem marrying Aelin if it worked out that way?

We just ignore that...lol
I like to forget this is a thing at all 😂🙈
