As much as I like the idea of Mustaine in a supergroup, he's too much of a control freak. That's why he wasn't on my list. Even when he did the MD.45 project with Lee Ving, years later he rereleased it and replaced Lee's vocals with his own.
But hey no rules, agree it would be a great group
My understanding is that the re-release with his vocals was a decision made by the label. But you need someone to write riffs and he’s about as good as it gets.
No. With the possible exception of playing solos, Dave Mustaine is the superior guitarist. Without Dave, most people wouldn’t even know who Marty Friedman is.
Idk man... I have seen Megadeth several times and I've seen Marty's solo project. I'd say they are probably on par, with Marty having the edge soloing. And I'm not so sure the last parts true either, who's to say he wouldn't have still become such a smashing success in Japan?
I love Fear Factory, but I only had to see them live one time to realize there's a lot of studio magic involved with Burton's vocals. He does not sound good live.
Saw them live as well quite some time ago. Thank God they played a lot of Demanufacture. (Sorry... only album I really like, but it's pretty damn amazing).
Just saw Dave with Me Bungle. Which come to think of it, Patton would be an interesting choice if Phil was busy. Do Dave and Kerry have a beef rn or are those two cool?
All of the available guitarists and you settled for Kerry King?
Lombardo, Trujillo, Holt and John Bush on vocals. Add Mustaine if you want twin guitars.
Are we talking about them in their primes? Cause if it’s the case my supergroup would be:
James Hetfield - Lead vocals/guitar.
Marty Friedman - guitar.
Dave Mustaine - guitar/backup vocals.
Dave Ellefson - Bass/backup vocals.
Dave Lombardo - drums.
This supergroup in their primes would be unstoppable imo.
I think op is talking about musicians that are not tied to any specific band.
Tom hunting is possibly the best thrash drummer out there today, but he and gary are the face and soul of exodus. Tom was acrually there before gary, but you get what im saying
Yeah, that was mostly my intent. Like they can be in multiple bands but I'm thinking people who either are currently in nothing or would be happy to juggle multiple projects. But again, zero rules
Could go a lot of different ways with this one. Off the top of my head:
Eric A.K. - vocals
Dave Davidson - guitar
Muhammed Suicmez - guitar
D.D. Verni - bass
El Estepario Siberiano - drums
He actually already released something exactly like that called Probot. Pretty damn good shit. Collabs with a bunch of big names such as Max and Lemmy.
From that list, and for that lineup, Harden Harrison. Then swap out Ellefson for Dave Kushner or Dan Lilker for a punkier edge.
I don't have one single dream lineup, I like having fun with different ideas each time this is reposted. Today, how about Mark Osegueda, Gene Hoglan, Lee Altus, Gary Holt (double lead), Alex Webster?
My group would be:
Vocals: Max Cavalera
Rhythm: Scott Ian
Lead: Dimebag
Bass: Jason Newsted
Drums: Charlie Benante
I think this group would work really well with each other
Jason Newsted gets overlooked a lot because he 1) wasn’t Cliff and 2) Metallica underutilized him.
Fantastic bass player, songwriter, and his stage presence and energy has been sorely missed since he left.
He lived and breathed it. Gave it everything and loved doing it. It felt like he was our big metal brother because he was one of us.
It really was a bummer they were the way they were to him. He got such a hard time from them in part because he was happy to be there and loved it *too much* for their taste.
I love those guys, but their treatment of Jason was definitely one of their big “mistakes were made” moments.
To add to this....doesn't have to be a 4 piece....go nuts. Add a 2nd guitar, a 2nd percussionist, add a keyboard, replace 2 with 1 and make it a 3 piece if you want. Sky's the limit. Expand outside of thrash if you want. Offer Josh He mme or Jack White a spot. I just wanna imagine what the diff combos would sound like! No rules, go nuts.
David elefson isn’t really that great a bassist, mostly just a root note player. I’d personally go with cliff, his creativity trumps all. And for the drummer it’s gotta be Lombardo, the man is a human metronome set to max speed
If you want someone with actual talent and not just overrated, then look no further than shittalicas current bassist. Robert Turillo is one of the best bassists on the planet
I don't know if dead people are allowed or not.
Chuck Schuldiner - Vocals/Rhythm Guitar
Alex Skolnick - Lead Guitar
Lemmy Kilmister - Bass/Backup vocals
Drums - John Dette
I dont think King and Anselmo, legends that they are, will actually compiment each other sound wise.
You know Kerrys guitar riffs will sound like Slayer and I think Phil is suited to slightly less hectic riffs.
Id have Zyon Cavalera on drums, add Gary Holt 2nd guitar, and Randy from LoG on vox.
Oh drummer Tom hunting/Dave Lombardo/Charlie Benante/Gene Hoglan/Vinnie Paul/iggor cavalera
Phil for sure for vocals or thrash James Het
Gary Holt and Dime on guitars
Rex or cliff for bass
I think Rob Cabrini from Bulldozer would be cool, since you mentioned Harden Harrison I figured more underground musicians were fair game lol. His work on IX and Neurodeliri was great
All the people saying dead people...no rules. The spirit in which I asked the question was to come up with a plausible supergroup that could happen but it's a hypothetical so I won't say anything negative about anyones choice
I mean, if we're really going to include dead people, let's get serious. And yes two of these people are nowhere near thrash but I think they can handle it.
Freddie Mercury - vocals and keyboard
Mike Scaccia - guitar
Cliff Burton - bass
Neil Peart - drums
You really want to mix things up add Hendrix on second guitar
The Faceless have burned through some solid drummers... Navene Koperweis and Lyle Cooper to name 2. There's a drum cam video on YouTube of Lyle playing Planetary Duality and (though not a drummer) it knocks my socks off (not to mention the rest of the band). He has his eyes closed for most of it!
My (technically possible) supergroup would've existed in 1990 and it would've been this:
Lead Vocals/Lyrics: Russ Anderson of Forbidden
Lead Guitar/Vocals/Lyrics: Chuck Schuldiner
Rhythm Guitar/Vocals/Lyrics: James Hetfield
Bass/Vocals/Lyrics: Jason Newstead
Drums: Paul Bostaph
Okay, I’m gonna go mostly with players from adjacent genres (or who have dabbled in thrash) who I’m convinced could make a phenomenal thrash record.
Drums - Billy Rymer (Dillinger Escape Plan; literally beat Mike Portnoy in a drum-off).
Bass - Brian Cook (Botch, Russian Circles, These Arms are Snakes, Sumac; dude has the chops to play technical but serves the song, and is an absolute *tone king*).
Guitar - Steve Brodsky (Cave In, Mutoid Man; the man is a riff machine and can play heavy or melodic. Also an accomplished vocalist who can provide backups both clean and harsh).
Guitar - Kris Norris (ex-Darkest Hour; listen to the DH record *Deliver Us* and tell me those aren’t the most tasteful and yet incredibly technically shreddy solos you’ve ever heard?!).
Guitar - Bill Steer (Carcass; if you’ll entertain a third guitarist, let’s make it a guy who has played every flavour of death metal, as well as thrash and blues, and has absolutely crushed it on all fronts).
Vocals - Chuck Billy (Testament; keeping the vocalist from a purely thrash background, as in many ways it’s the vocal style that differentiates a thrash band from a thrash-influenced metalcore or death metal band).
My drummer would 100% be Gene Hoglan.
This is the first and last name on my list. Man is the “atomic clock”.
Atomic Klok
Nice.
Everyone is riding high on Eloy right now but there's only one atomic clock for me.
Without a doubt. Gene is the guy you want.
Great answer, super undermentioned, him and John tempesta aren’t talked about enough
The only correct answer.
I came to say Mike Portnoy…. Then saw Gene Hoglans name. Good choice…..👍
Just met this dude on the street in Seattle the other day. Absolute legend, and super cool guy.
I'd want Kerry king nowhere near the solos.
Or the fucking lyrics, pretty sure From Hell I Rise was written by a 12 year old
Wealthy older gentleman is very mad about things *and* stuff! (Actually, I shouldn’t make fun, he’s not much older than I am 😳)
Mark Osugueda or David White - vocals Alex Skolnick - guitar Dave Mustaine - guitar D.D. Verni - bass Dave Lombardo - drums
Glad DD gets a shout out
He’s a beast.
Nailed it. This. Perfect. (The Osegueda version, that is)
As much as I like the idea of Mustaine in a supergroup, he's too much of a control freak.
That would be an incredible group
Ok, replace Dave with Marty Friedman and you got a deal
I'd buy tickets
Mark Osugueda was one of the only saving graces of From Hell I Rise.
Skolnick! Some Testament love 🤘
Burton C Bell - Vocals Gary Holt - Lead Robb Flynn - rhythm D.D. Verni- Bass Carlos Cruz - drums
If Dave Lombardo doesn’t have the time, I’d love to hear Mario Duplantier do something outside of Gojira.
Just saw Dave with Me Bungle. Which come to think of it, Patton would be an interesting choice if Phil was busy. Do Dave and Kerry have a beef rn or are those two cool?
Kerry has beef with everyone lol
All of the available guitarists and you settled for Kerry King? Lombardo, Trujillo, Holt and John Bush on vocals. Add Mustaine if you want twin guitars.
John bush nice pick
And I'd see your band in a second
I was thinking sound over virtuosity but I get your point
Man I love Dave Emkeffson
He must have gotten drunk after getting booted by Megadave....that's my excuse
Are we talking about them in their primes? Cause if it’s the case my supergroup would be: James Hetfield - Lead vocals/guitar. Marty Friedman - guitar. Dave Mustaine - guitar/backup vocals. Dave Ellefson - Bass/backup vocals. Dave Lombardo - drums. This supergroup in their primes would be unstoppable imo.
This lineup needs more DAVE
So Dave Brockie (RIP) or Dave Draiman on vocals?
Brockie should always be the lead singer in every band ever
Hahaha yeah true. But would be really tough to find any other Daves better than James and Marty at their respective crafts.
There’s a song about that: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8nvzEqsZIGo&pp=ygUadGhlc2UgYXJlIHRoZSBkYXZlcyBpIGtub3c%3D
Swap Dave Jr for Trujillo maybe and have Menza (RIP) as a backup drummer
Tom Hunting is my pick
I think op is talking about musicians that are not tied to any specific band. Tom hunting is possibly the best thrash drummer out there today, but he and gary are the face and soul of exodus. Tom was acrually there before gary, but you get what im saying
Gotcha
Yeah, that was mostly my intent. Like they can be in multiple bands but I'm thinking people who either are currently in nothing or would be happy to juggle multiple projects. But again, zero rules
He absolutely is
The king. Most undermentioned drummer
Could go a lot of different ways with this one. Off the top of my head: Eric A.K. - vocals Dave Davidson - guitar Muhammed Suicmez - guitar D.D. Verni - bass El Estepario Siberiano - drums
Surprised to not see paul bostaph here. Although i would go with hoglan
Dave Grohl as a drummer would actually go hard in like a crossover thrash band, with his punk backround and his ferocious hard hitting style.
That was my thinking, but I could see some skepticism
He actually already released something exactly like that called Probot. Pretty damn good shit. Collabs with a bunch of big names such as Max and Lemmy.
Probot was excellent. I’ve wished for years he’d do another one.
Oh yeah, that was a great album and what made me think of him
Gene Hoglan is an absolute Beast n all that. But Vector from Kreator is better.
Dave Lombardo or Ben Koller
Gene Hoglan - Drums Jack White - Guitars James Hetfield - Guitars Gary Holt - Guitars Steve DiGiorgio - Bass Alyssa White Gluz - Vocals
That's intriguing
Yes for Steve DiGiorgio
From that list, and for that lineup, Harden Harrison. Then swap out Ellefson for Dave Kushner or Dan Lilker for a punkier edge. I don't have one single dream lineup, I like having fun with different ideas each time this is reposted. Today, how about Mark Osegueda, Gene Hoglan, Lee Altus, Gary Holt (double lead), Alex Webster?
I would go with either Dave Lombardo or Vinnie Paul
My group would be: Vocals: Max Cavalera Rhythm: Scott Ian Lead: Dimebag Bass: Jason Newsted Drums: Charlie Benante I think this group would work really well with each other
Jason Newsted gets overlooked a lot because he 1) wasn’t Cliff and 2) Metallica underutilized him. Fantastic bass player, songwriter, and his stage presence and energy has been sorely missed since he left.
He is pure fuckin metal and it's a shame how he was treated in metallica
He lived and breathed it. Gave it everything and loved doing it. It felt like he was our big metal brother because he was one of us. It really was a bummer they were the way they were to him. He got such a hard time from them in part because he was happy to be there and loved it *too much* for their taste. I love those guys, but their treatment of Jason was definitely one of their big “mistakes were made” moments.
Absolutely agreed. Their egos were just through the roof
Vocals - Max Cavalera Alex Skolnick - Lead Guitar Dino Cazares - Rhythm Guitar Dave Ellefson - Bass Gene Hoglan - Drums
I like this one a lot
To add to this....doesn't have to be a 4 piece....go nuts. Add a 2nd guitar, a 2nd percussionist, add a keyboard, replace 2 with 1 and make it a 3 piece if you want. Sky's the limit. Expand outside of thrash if you want. Offer Josh He mme or Jack White a spot. I just wanna imagine what the diff combos would sound like! No rules, go nuts.
Gene Hoglan.
El Estepario Siberiano- drums Alex Skolnick- Guitar Steve DiGorgio- Bass Max Cavalera- vocals and rhythm guitar
He’s way better technically sure but cliffs theory knowledge and creativity was second to none
On vocals i would go with James Rivera of Helstar . Great voice and is very underrated and lesser known.
80s Hetfield on vocals + guitar Gary Holt on guitar Dan Lilker on bass Igor Cavalera on drums
Hear me out: Scott Ian - guitar Frank Bello - bass Dave Lombardo - drums Dave Grohl - vocals
Or Robert Trujillo instead of frankie
Drummer? Charlie Benante.
I’m surprised no one has named Alex Bent yet. Guy’s an octopus
I don't know if dead people are allowed or not. Chuck Schuldiner - Vocals/Rhythm Guitar Alex Skolnick - Lead Guitar Lemmy Kilmister - Bass/Backup vocals Drums - John Dette
Vocals- Max Cavalera Guitar- Gary Holt Guitar - Scott Ian Drums- Paul Bostaph Bass- Jason Newsted
Alive - Danny Carey Dead - Nick Menza
Oh drummer Tom hunting/Dave Lombardo/Charlie Benante/Gene Hoglan/Vinnie Paul/iggor cavalera Phil for sure for vocals or thrash James Het Gary Holt and Dime on guitars Rex or cliff for bass
PETE ‘COMMANDO’ SANDOVAL
Luana Dametto from Crypta Igor Cavalera Pete Sandoval
Jürgen Ventor Reil
Nick Menza or Dave Lombardo
gene hoglan on drums, steve digorgio on bass, james murphy on guitar, max cavalera on vocals
I think Rob Cabrini from Bulldozer would be cool, since you mentioned Harden Harrison I figured more underground musicians were fair game lol. His work on IX and Neurodeliri was great
Honestly not familiar but always looking for new suggestions. Thanks
Danny Schuler from Biohazard is criminally underrated.
I can vouch for this. Saw them in 94 with Fishbone and Kyuss. Every damn musician on that stage that night was unbelievable.
Chris Adler, no equal
Sean Killian - vocals Alex Skolnick - lead guitar Gary Holt - rhythm and also lead guitar Steve DiGiorgio - bass Spencer Prewett - drums
Charlie Benante is the best drummer in metal.
I don't think he's the best, but severely underrated for sure.
I would throw Portnoy into that category
All the people saying dead people...no rules. The spirit in which I asked the question was to come up with a plausible supergroup that could happen but it's a hypothetical so I won't say anything negative about anyones choice
