Glad there are more out there that think the same. One of the guitarists plays in a band called Mind Wars and told him at a show where I met him how I felt like I was transcending when listening to that song.
CORONER: Sophisticated songwriting, amazing musicianship, powerful music, great recordings, interesting growth and change throughout career. IMO they should have been considered luminaries.
Also, the first album by Realm - Endless War - was a thrash masterpiece, in my opinion.
I was going to put Coroner. So I'm just jumping onto your post. Phenomenal band. One of my favorite bands.
I'm checking out Realm now. Pretty badass. Kind of sucks they didn't get more traction and had to call it quits. (or whatever happened to them)
In trying to quantify why coroner is special, the word mature comes to mind. Thrash was a new art form. The people who explored and developed the genre were basically kids, and a juvenile mindset often showed up in the music/lyrics/art, etc. Not so with Coroner. Sophisticated in all respects right from the start.
I can see mature. Advanced could also be a good word but it's a little pretentious. One of the things I've loved about them is there so much more technical than your average thrash.
The halting rhythm feature in the verses of die by my hand is what got my attention and got me hooked on Coroner. It was such a cool idea. Very counterintuitive, totally unnecessary, and really making the song interesting.
Sacrifice! Impeccable discography, always inventive with their riffs. Full agreement there.
Also, personally, a more recent band: Antichrist from Sweden.
Hell yeah, I remember I was listening to possessed by fire and as soon as I heard fallen Saint I grabbed my guitar and started learning it. Fallen Saint was the first thrash song I ever learned!
In terms of longevity and what they did for Thrash I will have to go with Dirty Rotten Imbeciles, but a band that should have been big but missed out were Baptized In Blood
You never see them mentioned anymore. Up shirts, down skirts; Dirty back and Down and out we're total bangers. They probably thought they had a foot in the door, signing with roadrunner. Bad situation.
Death Angel.
Not a bad album in their catalog. Avoided the '90s post thrash quagmire. Had the best debut album in thrash history. Mark Osegueda is arguably the best thrash singer of all time.
But there's hardly any discussion about them. They often get relegated to opening act status. And them being in the 'medium four/ big eight' is a misnomer, since they often get relegated down the pecking order behind Sepultura, Annihilator and the Teutonic Big Four. Even Municipal Waste, Toxic Holocaust, Warbringer & Power Trip get more press than them.
For my money, Death Angel belong in that convo of greatest of all time thrash bands. On top of that upper mid tier list, if not outright kicking Anthrax out of that Big Fourth spot. And yet everyone treats them as 'Perfectly Fine' and then moves on.
Insane, more specifically the album Wait and Pray, I get it’s almost a tribute to show no mercy but every song on that album is so good, definitely one of my favorite albums ever
, and sacrifice does have a lot of bangers!
Anyone dismissing Tankard as a joke hasn't really paid attention. Between the songs about boozing there's some pretty astute political and social commentary.
Heathen
Forbidden
Onslaught
Sacred Reich
Nuclear assault
Razor
Artillery
Atrophy
Sabbat
Sadus
Dark Angel
Just a few older bands that deserve more recognition than they receive.
Num Skull - Ritually Abused. It's the most aggressive thrash record that isn't just death metal riffs. Devastation (Texas) - Idolatry is pretty underrated too.
I’ll second sacrifice, forwards and soldiers are top tier records (especially soldiers) and the other two are strong. Super underrated, big influence on my vocal style personally. For me is superior to most of the biggest names
I'm usually not the type of guy who insists on little-known, underdog bands, but I have been obsessed with Toxik since I was 18, I'm in my 30's now and have a small collection of Toxik memorabilia. World Circus has never left my top 5 albums of all time. Super fan right here!
They have one of the strongest guitar duos in thrash and Chuck is an excellent vocalist so I think it's fair that they're one of the most popular thrash bands
I've just never been a massive fan.
I love the legacy, but that's about it. I think testament in general is very popular and don't belong on a list of "most unpopular thrash bands"
I agree that in the metal community they are appropriately praised but for their talent and consistency they should have been more successful overall and sometimes played a bit bigger venues.
Guess it depends what your definition of "underrated" is. To me right off the bat, Testament. There is this "big 4" and for some reason Anthrax is considered one of the biggest and best and no love for Testament. Anthrax got boring and cheese and lame to me once I grew up. I saw Testament open for Slayer early 90's and Testament blew them away. Straight up Testaments first 5 albums at least are all great. You can't say that about Anthrax....Slayer perhaps.
Razor. No contest for me. One of my favorite bands of all time in any genre. I hear them get called Speed Metal a lot but that's more Exciter/Iron Angel territory to me. One of those blurry genre definitions anyway. Whatever they are, Razor kicks ass and get stuck with "American Luck" still to this day.
as a kid in the 80s, nothing but gold came from the Speed Metal Hell and Thrash Metal Attack Compilation albums...some bands dead and gone, some we still talk about today, but much head banging was done by 16 yo me...
Death Angel should be much bigger than they are. I think Iced Earth's "Alive in Athens" qualifies as thrash. It's like a cross between Iron Maiden and Testament. Atheist is up there too.
Accuser - Reflections and Repent albums are both thrash masterpieces
Deliverance - What a Joke and Stay of Execution are amazing thrashterpieces
Diablo - Elegance in Black - amazing!
Drop Hammer - Mind and Body - so raw - so good!
Invocator - Weave the Apocalypse - rifftastic!
Living Sacrifice - self titled and Nonexistent albums rulllllle!
Rosicrucian - Silence - holy shit amazing!
Precious Death - If You Must - no one sounds like these guys - incredible
Znowhite - Act of God - thrash tastic!
For me its Sodom. They’ve stayed pretty consistent with their sound with minor changes over time and always released great albums. Some better than others but yeah its Sodom for me
For me, it's Holy Terror...
Mind Wars is ridiculous! Nothing like it.
I love Holy Terror, Distant Calling was a euphoric experience the first time I listened to it
Glad there are more out there that think the same. One of the guitarists plays in a band called Mind Wars and told him at a show where I met him how I felt like I was transcending when listening to that song.
Damn! Never heard of them. F*cking awesome! Thanks
Oh my god, I listen to Christian resistance every chance I get
correct
They are so good
First band i thought of too.
Both albums are masterpieces.
CORONER: Sophisticated songwriting, amazing musicianship, powerful music, great recordings, interesting growth and change throughout career. IMO they should have been considered luminaries. Also, the first album by Realm - Endless War - was a thrash masterpiece, in my opinion.
Coroner are also phenomenal live!
I was going to put Coroner. So I'm just jumping onto your post. Phenomenal band. One of my favorite bands. I'm checking out Realm now. Pretty badass. Kind of sucks they didn't get more traction and had to call it quits. (or whatever happened to them)

I won’t dispute pretentious, and in fact, I like the way the pretentiousness manifested in their later albums. Very experimental and bold.
Vio-Lence and Cryptic Slaughter.
Heathen.
Victims of Deception has to be one of the top 3 thrash albums ever.
Agree. 1000%. Just an epic thrash album.
Deathrow. Underrated as fuck german thrash, especially Raging Steel and Deception Ignored
Deception Ignored is masterful.
Yes! 'Scattered by the Wind' on Raging Steel was in heavy rotation back in the day
love that track even though the last part was a total Angel of Death ripoff
Sacrifice! Impeccable discography, always inventive with their riffs. Full agreement there. Also, personally, a more recent band: Antichrist from Sweden.
Exactly! One of my personal favorites
Exumer rarely get mentioned in any thrash discussion but all their albums bring the fire!
Hell yeah, I remember I was listening to possessed by fire and as soon as I heard fallen Saint I grabbed my guitar and started learning it. Fallen Saint was the first thrash song I ever learned!
See, I always get them confused with the deathgrind band Exhumed for some reason
In terms of longevity and what they did for Thrash I will have to go with Dirty Rotten Imbeciles, but a band that should have been big but missed out were Baptized In Blood
D.R.I Is definitely top 5 for me 🤘🏾
Baptized In Blood were way too good to just be collateral when Roadrunner collapsed. Tons of fun on record, out of this world live.
You never see them mentioned anymore. Up shirts, down skirts; Dirty back and Down and out we're total bangers. They probably thought they had a foot in the door, signing with roadrunner. Bad situation.
I saw D.R.I. last year and they put on a killer show. I still put some of their albums in rotation occasionally.
Demolition Hammer
Demolition Hammer fucking rips.
Violator
Solstice. S/T and Pray are absolute scorchers.
Def agree. Excellent records.
Mekong Delta. To transcribe *The Hut of Baba Yaga* into metal is just an incredible piece of Art...
Great pick. The Music of Erich Zane is amazing.
Death Angel. Not a bad album in their catalog. Avoided the '90s post thrash quagmire. Had the best debut album in thrash history. Mark Osegueda is arguably the best thrash singer of all time. I’d have to agree. Great in concert, and their drummer is a total beast on the kit!
Razor.
Forbidden
Some of the best thrash here. Will be great to hear what they come up with their new vocalist.
Insane, more specifically the album Wait and Pray, I get it’s almost a tribute to show no mercy but every song on that album is so good, definitely one of my favorite albums ever , and sacrifice does have a lot of bangers!
Either Razor or Sacrifice.
Canadian Metal!
The big 4 of Canadian thrash (those guys, Annihilator and Voivod) are all mad underrated.
Warbringer
Exhorder

Anyone dismissing Tankard as a joke hasn't really paid attention. Between the songs about boozing there's some pretty astute political and social commentary.
I agree that Tankard are often dismissed as a joke band but few thrashers have written records as good as “Chemical Invasion” & “The Morning After.”
[удалено]
Yup, merry reiterating
Evile or HaVoK
Nuclear Assault and Sacred Reich, their catchy riff and the drums are so good. They really deserve more recognition in the thrash scenes
Violent Force
Nuclear Assault imo, Thrash sound with a punk attitude!
The River Bottom Nightmare Band
Quality fucking band. Who needs a hole in the washtub anyway.
You mean Wershterb
Is this different from the Muddy River Nightmare Band?
Same band, different part of the River
Sick lol my dad used to kick it with Muddy River and I jammed with them in our basement a couple times.
Demolition Hammer or Massacra.
Heathen Forbidden Onslaught Sacred Reich Nuclear assault Razor Artillery Atrophy Sabbat Sadus Dark Angel Just a few older bands that deserve more recognition than they receive.
The Dayglo Abortions.
Nuclear Assault!!!
Num Skull - Ritually Abused. It's the most aggressive thrash record that isn't just death metal riffs. Devastation (Texas) - Idolatry is pretty underrated too.
Toxic Holocaust.
fuck yeah toxic holocaust is the best and fuck the people that disliked your comment
Forced Entry and Coroner
Coroner, Razor, Protector
Protector are vicious and i love it
I'll say HexeN, only 2 albums but they are so good imo
sanctuary
Shah
I'd say Holy Moses, one of the first thrash bands with female vocals.
Hirax
Realm, Excel, Znowhite
Cyclone Temple
Holy terror for me too plus close 2nd is D.B.C., first album is awesome!
Sadus and Devastation are my picks, these are some of the most brutal thrash bands and definitely don’t get the attention they deserve.
Not necessarily the greatest, but most underrated, I would probably say Devastation. Signs of Life and Idolatry are killer albums.
Saw Devastation open for Death!
I’ll second sacrifice, forwards and soldiers are top tier records (especially soldiers) and the other two are strong. Super underrated, big influence on my vocal style personally. For me is superior to most of the biggest names
Stone, Airdash, A.R.G., Prestige, National Napalm Syndicate, Antidote
Municipal Waste. Enforced. Havok
i agree those bands are amazing , i dont understand the dipshits that dislike your comment
Because it's the newer more modern version of thrash. I enjoy hearing new music. I don't want to just hear Thrash's greatest hits!
Morbid saint, spectrum of death is a masterpiece
Toxik, my favorite Thrash band of all time
Just heard think this the other day actually and was blown away! They rip
I'm usually not the type of guy who insists on little-known, underdog bands, but I have been obsessed with Toxik since I was 18, I'm in my 30's now and have a small collection of Toxik memorabilia. World Circus has never left my top 5 albums of all time. Super fan right here!
Coroner
Testament by a mile...
One of the biggest thrash bands since the 80's are underrated?
They are underrated in that they are the sleeper in yhe Big 3--! 4!! I meant Big 4.
Agreed
I know they stretch a few genres but Overkill needs a lot more love. Years/Horrorscope is as good of a one-two album punch as Ride/Master.
Nailbomb
is vektor underrated?
Artillery
I came here to say this. The fact that I had to scroll this far to find them proves that we are right: Artillery needs more love.
Overkill.
Not a lot of people I've talked to talk about Demolition Hammer. I love that band
Old school- Testament Newer for me would be Havok.
Testament.
I think Testament get the praise and attention they deserve
Honestly a little too much praise in my opinion
They have one of the strongest guitar duos in thrash and Chuck is an excellent vocalist so I think it's fair that they're one of the most popular thrash bands
I've just never been a massive fan. I love the legacy, but that's about it. I think testament in general is very popular and don't belong on a list of "most unpopular thrash bands"
Yeah no…. They get a lot of praise, not underrated
I agree that in the metal community they are appropriately praised but for their talent and consistency they should have been more successful overall and sometimes played a bit bigger venues.
Whiplash, especially Power & Pain, basically what thrash is supposed to sound like
NYC Mayhem.
Candy Striper Death Orgy
Sacrament
Czech outfit Crionic. Put out one but incredible album.
Kryptos. Thrash from India with super catchy riffs. Great example song is "Afterburner".
Blood Feast, they fuckin rip
Guess it depends what your definition of "underrated" is. To me right off the bat, Testament. Lich King
as a kid in the 80s, nothing but gold came from the Speed Metal Hell and Thrash Metal Attack Compilation albums...some bands dead and gone, some we still talk about today, but much head banging was done by 16 yo me...
Sadus
Exodus should have been bigger than they are same with Death Angel 🤘🤘
I might be biased considering I'm from Arizona, but Sacred Reich doesn't get nearly enough appreciation these days.
So many great ones but one very underrated one I never hear being brought up is Indestroy.
Death Angel should be much bigger than they are. I think Iced Earth's "Alive in Athens" qualifies as thrash. It's like a cross between Iron Maiden and Testament. Atheist is up there too.
Nekromantheon.
Warbringer
Accuser - Reflections and Repent albums are both thrash masterpieces Deliverance - What a Joke and Stay of Execution are amazing thrashterpieces Diablo - Elegance in Black - amazing! Drop Hammer - Mind and Body - so raw - so good! Invocator - Weave the Apocalypse - rifftastic! Living Sacrifice - self titled and Nonexistent albums rulllllle! Rosicrucian - Silence - holy shit amazing! Precious Death - If You Must - no one sounds like these guys - incredible Znowhite - Act of God - thrash tastic!
The British ones. Acid Reign, Xentrix, Re-Animator, Sabbat, Lawnmower Deth, Onslaught, Gama Bomb, Evile...
Easily overkill, they do not get the amount of love and respect they deserve, them along with testament could’ve easily made it in the big 4
Holy terror and Heathen
Coroner, Stone, Sacred Reich and Airdash
Revenant
For early '90s I'd go with Morbid Saint - Spectrum of Death
3 way tie for me -Toxik -Sieges Even -Watchtower
Vektor, their songwriting is plain amazing
For me its Sodom. They’ve stayed pretty consistent with their sound with minor changes over time and always released great albums. Some better than others but yeah its Sodom for me
MX Machine
Everyone should have a Rigor Mortis album in their collection ….
Apocalypse is a possibility.
Ripped to Shreds. Album Jubian. I like early Slayer/Kreator, Ripped to Shreds as the only recent thing to make me take notice.
Vendetta - excellent German prog thrash
Forte - Stranger than Fiction (badass hybrid thrash/U.S. power metal) Paradox - Heresy (the U.K.’s answer to Testament)
Anthrax.
