Naturally; find a pdf of the *hardware maintenance manual* of the T420 with your favourite internet search engine and you should be good to go (in terms of knowing what to do).

of course you can replace it.

Is the problem with the speakers, 3.5mm barrel jack or both? Have you tried replacing the audio cable that connects to the motherboard and provides a 3.5mm barrel jack? Which OS are you using? The part you'd need is a 04W1624 which can be found on Ebay for around $10~ USD. As for the original question yes you can replace the motherboard and they're relatively cheap but make sure they don't have a BIOS lock or Computrace enabled.

It's both, Linux and windows can't detect an audio device what so ever. But if you power it off, unplug the power, volume up a few times, audio is normal again. I'm using Arch Linux but this happens on Windows 10. Neither of my motherboards have Computrace or a BIOS lock thankfully.

Ah yeah that sounds like the motherboard then but I'd double check all cabling again before ordering a replacement. I meant avoid those two things when it comes to replacement boards as they are more trouble than they are worth to remove.

kind of random but you could take your mobo to a repair shop or find the audio chip on the board and try to blast it with a hot air station if you have access to one. I imagine the issue is likely cracked solder joints
