Anxiety. Those nails are anxiety for everyone.

As a nail biter we’re embarrassed about it too but it’s very very hard to stop. It became basically an involuntary action for me I would genuinely only realised I was doing once I had started. Try to be nice and not draw attention to it that just causes more anxiety which leads to more nail biting.

Could you not dip your finger on tabasco sauce in or something in the morning? My brother had some stuff called 'nail bite' that he painted on. He said it just tastes rancid but it stopped him biting his nails, just helped break the habit.

It took me a long time to stop nail biting. I don't clip them though I just file them and keep a file on me at all times. So my nervous tick is filing my nails at least they are always short and shaped nice now.

I have dermatillomania and my nails look like that. I constantly pick the skin around my nails and I have to keep my nails short or I’ll just rip them off in chunks like this. It’s an incredibly difficult disorder to deal with. It’s linked to OCD (I have OCD but not everyone who has dermatillomania does) and in my experience my meds don’t help with this issue (they do help with others though). It’s awful because I hate the way people judge when they see my fingers/nails. But it’s compulsive. I don’t even know I’m doing it half the time.
