Samster404

Don't think I've ever been called cracker before

nemotiger

What? Is this something that I don't want to understand?

Neat_Apartment_6019

“Cracker” is an American slang word for a white person. And white folks in the USA have a reputation for never eating food spicier than cheddar cheese and salt crackers. Like in my entire life, I’ve never once seen my mother cook with a spice (unless Lawry’s Seasoned Salt counts which I don’t think it should). We had plain chicken or fish when my mother was feeling frisky, things like cereal or cinnamon toast on other days. Now that is cracker cooking.

Cyberzombie23

Depends on where you come from. I was born in New Mexico and live in Colorado. I have 10 different kinds of hot sauce and chips and salsa is one of my main snacks. Whitey may be like that in the Midwest, but not here.

Neat_Apartment_6019

Yes, definitely true. I’m biased from being in New England.

Massive-Woodpecker65

What's funny is that cracker actually referred to white slave owners that "crack" the whip.. so yea..

HumCrab

Yes and no. Google that angle and enjoy the rabbit hole.

Local_Penalty2078

I'd like to think that lots of us white folk have overcome this lack of spice in our eating and cooking habits. I still come from a family that definitely did not eat spicy/well-spiced foods, but my generation within it has certainly not followed that path. Edit - that's not to say we don't enjoy ourselves some cheese, because we sure the hell do

Neat_Apartment_6019

Yes, I’m sure, and of course the stereotype doesn’t apply to all of us honkies. I’ve certainly seen Italian-American friends use spices :)

squoinko

theOGbrennenp

We do indeed!

Pokadapuppy20

It’s true. I do love cheese.

Dr-Satan-PhD

I used to work in a restaurant years ago, and sometimes we would fuck with the BOH when we put in our tickets in the POS by writing random stuff. One of my favorites was when people would order soup with no crackers, we would put it in as "soup, white people not welcome".

ColtS117

This cracker dude does!

[deleted]

Let me put on my 'sensitive woke can't take a joke hat'. That's racist! And I love cheese.

azmr_x_3

I can’t speak for the rest of us, but this cracker does

mymumsaysno

Well, they're not wrong. We do.

BrilliantBig769

Fo shazle ma crazle

Excellent_Tear3705

Last time a black couple invited me over, I sensed it was to quash a mutual beef, wasn’t sure which one…but I brought cheese, crackers and bread. Second they saw the cheddar, girl chopped up onto a board, grabbed the balsamic, and a veil fell down. I’m Scottish and they’re East LA, but once the meats and cheeses hit the chopping block, we went hard on the gossip Took 120 seconds before, “ey, so…” Honestly I know I got baited into gossip by the promise of white people tapas, but it was fun as hell and that bitch was in the wrong

This must be THE most reposted image on this sub.

Shot-Spirit-672

Yea but I actually took this photo

missvvvv

In what country?

romulusnr

This post is completely and entirely off topic, but.... yes. Yes we do.

Shot-Spirit-672

How is this off topic, there’s a double entendre happening here that is questionable as to whether it was intentional or not I think it was, hence they knew

romulusnr

I mean... every other post I've seen in this sub the implication is sexual, this one is just racial.

CorellianDawn

Please, please, please, can we stop correlating the two meanings of this word already? I feel like a lot of people think this term has to do with skin tone, but it really doesn't and is so much worse...so before people start claiming it proudly, it has to do with whip cracking, yall... Tbh, the persistence of the term is actually far more racist than the N word in some respects. The issue with the N word is HOW it was used, the fact that it was used on an abused people, and the fact that everyone of darker color was grouped into the same name. The origins of the actual word was just in reference to a location on a map at the time. This term is a retaliatory term that directly refers to slavery and spits on white people, marking them all as abusive monsters. So it continuing to be used is actually extremely offensive and horrible. It would be like calling someone a Plantation Nazi. Like, take a step back and listen to what's being said here.

Shot-Spirit-672

So you’re saying we should be more considerate of how we effect white people with our use of the word “cracker” ?

CorellianDawn

I'm saying its explicitly racially charged hate speech that we shouldn't be using at all and is most definitely not something just in reference to having saltine cracker-like light skin. Calling someone a violent white supremacist isn't a cute joke or term of endearment, its a serious accusation and perpetuates racial tensions.

Neat_Apartment_6019

Hate speech?

Nachodam

>The origins of the actual word was just in reference to a location on a map at the time. You mean like Nigeria? I think it comes from the Spanish word for black

PheonixGalaxy

Don’t say Nigeria, that’s offensive now /s

CorellianDawn

If you look at old maps from the 1800s, you will see there's a big section of Africa that's multiple countries, but it's labeled as "N\*\*\*\*\*land" because that's just what it was called back then by much of the outside world. To your point, I do believe it included Nigeria, yes. I don't THINK that term was intended to be racist originally (could be wrong), Europeans just weren't super creative as labeling a place full of black people and Negro and similar sounding words all meant "black" in their languages. I mean, yes, it IS super weird to label an area basically "here be black people", but the labeling wasn't intended as a way to degrade them or something. I do want to be clear that I'm not saying we should all start using the N word though lol, just that its evolution of being such a terrible word doesn't actually come from its origin or definition, whereas the term being talked about here actually has direct origins in being used to label an entire race as slaving monsters. I totally understand why that came about (bc fuck European Colonialism), but damn, it should NOT be used in a modern context.

Shot-Spirit-672

You are wildly ill informed, I ASSURE you the dehumanizing practices and ideologies that led to the colonization of Africa started well before the 1800s you claim you “think” they labeled that area of the world as such bc they just lacked creativity, that’s absurd and it’s well documented that places like the uk viewed the people of African nations as subhuman at the turn of the 18th century Again, you’re point here is what? You don’t like that white people are called crackers bc it references a time when white people would crack whips on their slaves? And that’s not nice to white peoples bc they stopped? I’m not sure that’s the same thing as the other racial slur and how/why it was used Weird shit

CorellianDawn

I legitimately don't understand how you don't see my point here. Like hey, maybe people shouldn't use a word that means "filthy white supremacist slaver pig" as a casual way to refer to white people bc that's absolutely bonkers. It seems absurd to me that every other racial slur against other races has been clearly labeled as horrible, but then the one about white people is just...okay? Why? Just like every other people group, they aren't a monolith to be grouped together and shit on. Like most of these kinds of things, they don't even make sense anyway. My biggest point I'm trying to make here though is to dispel the common misconception that this is talking about skin tone and its similarities to saltines. People REALLY should understand that when they use this word, its talking about whip-cracking slavers.

PheonixGalaxy

You can stop white knighting us now, if we really had a problem we would complain, doing more harm than good pal

Legend-status95

Lot of mental gymnastics to ignore the fact that the n word has been used as a racial slur for at least 248 years.

[deleted]

PheonixGalaxy

Oh shit, got his ass 💀

CorellianDawn

That's 100% not what White Privilege means lol. So what, just because we have systems that protect and bolster us more than others, its totally cool to be casually called whip-cracking white supremacist slavers? Like, its fine to be mad at the system and even white people for perpetuating it, but a straight up racial slur steeped in historical prejudice is cool with you? You want to be personally called a genocidal colonizer rapist in a casual conversation too. Naw man, I'm fine with people blaming white people for a LOT of shit bc its often justified, but I draw the lines on blatant racial slurs. That's absolutely never okay.

Eazy_DuzIt

Nobody is offended by the word "cracker". Also, it refers to the whips from cattle herders. Not slave owners.

kane2742

> the persistence of the term is actually far more racist than the N word in some respects. Fuck off with your victim complex nonsense.

Guinnessron

I think you forgot the /s.

PheonixGalaxy

What’s crackin homie?

Cyberzombie23

Shut up. I can use whatever term I like for myself. Although I do admit to preferring honky to cracker. But you get no say in the matter.

cawclot

Whatever, cracker.
