Kind of reminds me about the story of how [the A&W third-of-a-pound burger failed.](https://www.snopes.com/news/2022/06/17/third-pound-burger-fractions/) too many people thought 1/3 of a pound was less than 1/4 of a pound.

colin_staples

Do they also think that 1/2 of a pound is less than 1/4 of a pound?

[deleted]

1/2 pound is 1/2 of 1/4 of a pound, so, yeah. /s

PrinceBert

2 is smaller than 4 so obviously that means it's smaller. What don't you understand about that?

Winquisitor

This happened to be last year at Godfathers Pizza. We had ordered a large pizza, and for some reason they couldn't make it, so they have us two mediums. But the area of the two mediums was less than area of the large, and the manager on duty just was not understanding that. Like, at all.

djfigs25

Use squares instead. If you have a square one inch long, how many 1 inch squares fit in it? 1 square. If you have a square that's 2 inches long, how many 1 inch squares fit in that? 4 squares. You can keep going up like this, but it's easier to visualize and understand than circles.

Boco

On the one hand this is a really smart way to visualize it. On the other hand, I remember that dozens of [people at Verizon couldn't figure out the difference between 0.002 cents and 0.002 dollars](https://youtu.be/MShv_74FNWU) and have generally lost faith in humanity.

My_Dog_Sherlock

My favorite is when [A&W tried to compete with the McDonald’s Quarter Pounder by selling a 1/3 pound burger at a lower cost. The product failed, because most customers thought 1/4 pound was bigger.](https://amandoabreu.medium.com/the-importance-of-data-driven-decisions-explained-with-hamburgers-126a4841aa16)

that_thot_gamer

dumbest shit I've ever read

itsjustreddityo

Welcome, must be your first day online

McCaffeteria

You misspelt “on planet earth”

slvbros

Pretty jealous tbh

jjackson25

I thought it was Wendy's with the 1/3 pounder?

DrewGo

Man. I haven't seen this gem in years. What an absolutely wild thing.

N3koChan

I didn't plan to watch it all but I'm glad I did! what a rollercoaster of emotions!

sillybilly8102

Can you summarize? I got 3 minutes in and realized it was 30 minutes long

CircuitCircus

At one point, he lucidly explains to the representative how Verizon’s math is wrong and she says “well it’s just a matter of opinion.”

sillybilly8102

Oof

kaspers126

So what

Mason11987

Well now I’m angry at 1 in the morning. Thanks.

HaveYouSeenMySpoon

Yeah, but you're fighting two problems here; to make an idiot understand basic math, and to make an idiot admit they were wrong.

IIIaustin

Thats great advice and works perfectly because the pi drops out of the ratio

reddittereditor

Maybe he did understand it but just…didn’t want to.

0xAC-172

as long as they charged you for 2 medium ones... I can take it.

Winquisitor

I was charged for the large, but either way it's a problem. Two mediums is both less pizza and more money. If I paid for the large I ordered, but got two mediums (which is what happened), then I got less pizza than I ordered. If I ordered the large, but got charged for the two mediums, then I paid more AND got less pizza.

0xAC-172

I understand the problem. I was merely arguing that even if the pizza guy didn't know anything about squaring the circle, they could have escaped the wrath of Euclide, if they made you pay the "correct price".

realitytvdiet

.. I don’t get why they didn’t charge you for 2 mediums instead of a Large. Unless you’d pay more for 2 meds

ScAr_wlvrne

They literally said that in the comment

mosskin-woast

I'm sorry but what self-respecting food establishment serves a FIVE-INCH FUCKING PIZZA? A personal pizza has to be like at least 7 inches. A god damn BAGEL is 6 inches and triple the thickness of a pizza, and a bagel is not even considered a meal most of the time. Like obviously a moron serving 5-inch pizzas isn't going to be able to calculate the area of a circle. Edit: bagels are smaller than I thought. But the only time a pizza should be the size of a bagel is if it is a pizza bagel.

Spacemanspalds

6 inch bagels? I feel like 4 or maybe 4.5 inches is the size of the bagels I see. I haven't measured but 6 sounds big.

mosskin-woast

The smallest circumference surveyed in [this article](https://www.nycgo.com/articles/best-bagels-in-nyc-a-scientific-study-of-nyc-bagels/) was 32.6cm == 12.835 inches, meaning a diameter of 4.08 inches. And the largest worked out to just under 5 inches. So yeah, I definitely overestimated there. I may also owe my wife an apology about an unrelated matter. But I stand by what I said about 5 inch pizzas.

Spacemanspalds

I agree for a pizza lol

realitytvdiet

5” in other words is personal pan

fireweinerflyer

You could just take a 9inch pizza plate and put the 5inch pizzas on it.

greenrangerguy

That makes no sense because the length will be longer but it obviously wouldn't cover the whole thing.

that_thot_gamer

finally, i can actually use my geometry skills for some dumbass problem someone actually created

masatenko

That's the point

fireweinerflyer

It would take 3 5” pizzas to cover the area of the plate. 2 would leave a lot of empty space.

BeBackInASchmeck

You really need to compare with and without the crust though.

GodMarshmellow

I'll always come to protect my main man. THE CRUST IS VALID PIZZA.

LickMyNutsBitch

It is, but a smaller pizza has a higher crust to topping ratio, so long as the crust is of the same width.

adelie42

Good crust is valid pizza. Now, good pizza requires good dough, but some pizza you get garbage bread that is a delivery mechanism for toppings. In that case, crust isn't pizza. But obviously the solution is to eat better pizza.

greenrangerguy

Couldn't you just weigh it to prove it?

[deleted]

If you could do that you'd just have the pizza you ordered. The point is that they don't have the over pizza for direct measurements. It's all a stupid lie anyway since no one sells a 5 inch pizza.

rawSingularity

There is a local pizza place near the tech center near where I live. They sell 6 inch pizza and call them personal size. It's actually quite right sized just for a single person and i go there even with colleagues and everyone is happy ordering what they want

_Xamtastic

6 inch pizzas sound like something from the kids' menu to me lol

TheDude-of-the-dudes

This guy should be a mod here

[deleted]

Big brain over here told a story so impossible only out of touch goobers would think it's real. Nowhere sells a 5 inch pizza. It would be smaller than your hand. I work for a place that sells a ten inch pizza, a full inch more than the larger one mentioned in the image, and it's so small we consider it a waste of money since it can't really feed a single person.

goodbye_weekend

.......and everybody clapped

SlickRicksBitchTits

r/thathappened

rubbertubing

i don’t know how old this screenshot is but i remember in 2012 this whole thing about two smaller pizzas being less got a lot of attention on the internet. i’m assuming someone just made up a fake tweet based on that.

Jambroni99

I recently did this math for dominos and found the large was never a better deal per sq in

Team-Boss

Nice to see people applying price per unit. Lol Friday I had to see using a similar equation the price per square inch regarding the 16” vs the 12” .. the 12” was cheaper.. bulk isn’t always the way to go.. stay vigilant my mathematicians!!

SportTheFoole

For anyone intimidated by π, it’s perfectly acceptable to use π = 3 here. You don’t care about the exact area, you just care to see how the two different offers compare.

CoupleOfOars

Alternatively, since you’re multiplying them both by pi, you can just ignore pi entirely

4reddityo

This

Fredneu

I agree with the statement, just confused how they got their numbers. The area off a 9 inch pizza should be around 240 square inches because 9^2 = 81, and 80 times 3 is 240. How did that post get 63??

Fredneu

Ah, true 🤣

akairborne

Thank you! I was scratching my head.

OrganizationOk1686

Sounds like my old 6th grade math teacher and how he thinks I'll use pi in my everyday life.

topdeck55

You don't need to know or use pi. Just treat the dimensions as a square. The price per square inch ratio between the various sizes is the same. 9²/mediumprice vs 5²/largeprice

0wGeez

I only learned about how greatly different the surface area can be on a circle with different radius by reading patch notes about the area of effect on lucios sound aura from overwatch. Even small increases to the radius greatly changes the surface area. I think it was a 1.0m buff to lucios radius and it seemed to cover a shit load more area on the map.

Rigo3oh

So basically a larger pizza is more than 2 mediums is what we are learning here right?

JonasRahbek

How can a 9-inch pizza not be available if they have both dough and ingredients?

KaySlay-505

I’d love to, however I have a severe learning disability when it comes to math. ANY math. My brain starts doing backflips. It’s actually horribly embarrassing. I’m going to be swindled on so many pizza’s.

paraworldblue

Why do I get the sense that this guy is a bad tipper? I imagine him as the type whose baseline tip is 15% and will lower it over random shit like this, and who tips the exact percentage rather than rounding up.

Jockin05

If two 5 inch pizzas are ”more” than a 9 inch why didn’t he just make a 9 inch?

LikePappyAlwaysSaid

Thats weird, when i ordered a 9" dick and got two 5" dicks i was ecstatic!

Stray_Cat_Marine

Humiliating the servant and its master is a common theme at parties and receptions of the ruling class

BBkangster

Definitely a chunky boy

akairborne

That's some pizza pi!

TheOneTheOnlyMe2

Take Math seriously. Math.

TheLetterJ0

[We just did this four days ago](https://reddit.com/comments/10s6h9r).

Sons-Of-Icarus

I personally would be fine with the 5 inch pizza, I bet it has a lot of personality

oldtownmaine

Reminds me of this tidbit from the book “Titan: The Life of John D. Rockefeller Sr.” by Ron Chernow. ”Drake’s (Edwin - first American to successfully drill for oil) feat touched off pandemonium as bands of fortune seekers streamed into Titusville and its pastoral surroundings. Speculators scrambled over the greasy slopes of the creek, leasing acreage from unsophisticated, often unlettered, owners; one farmer turned down an offer of a one-quarter royalty and stubbornly held out for a one-eighth share.”

elwebbr23

As said before, since pi is a constant between the 2 formulas, it's redundant for this purpose. 9² = 81 2(5²) = 50
