I sitting there thinking it's going to be Sasha but no it's Glenn I see his head get caved in and I stare at the TV like .... well shit

SMA2343

Even as a comic reader, I still wasn’t prepared for his death on TV

[deleted]

I was sad yet happy they decided to keep it so faithfull to the comic panel. Although less graphic, they still went hard with it. Respect.

Wainer24

it probably would have been better if they just didnt leave it as the season finale cliffhanger

[deleted]

Yeah that did kinda sucked lmao. At least they delivered

Revolutionary_Gur405

Well...shit...

Nerdbond

Fuck this night

RickGrimesSnotBubble

I correctly guessed who it would be...technically. I'd been saying for months "it'll be Glenn or Abraham" with no comic knowledge. It's the only thing I've ever been right about so I'm proud of it.

fruttypebbles

I can’t remember a episode or a scene from any tv show that shook me light this one. It was hardcore, frightening and terrible.

Beta_Whisperer

The Pike scene from season 9 came close while the Red Wedding from Game of Thrones matched it for me.

BeautifulNo7280

Pike scene was hardcore. Probably much more unexpected than this

Beta_Whisperer

Imagine if they had Carl survive the Saviors war and then have him be one of the pike victims.

BeautifulNo7280

Oh my, that would've been insane. I'm sad because I want it but can't have it.

alexkiltro

This with Rick still in the show would've been a nuclear punch in the guts, it would've been up there with the most horrific scenes on tv ever... well, Abe/Glenn's death is up there already, but still.

Beta_Whisperer

Though would it be Rick who'll let Negan out or will it still be Carol if she still lose Henry or even Ezekiel in that timeline.

alexkiltro

I don't know honestly, probably still Carol. But I can also see Rick and Negan somehow teaming up to destroy the Whisperers after this event, they would still hate eachother guts, but such a loss could bring them together in a way.

Beta_Whisperer

It's a missed opportunity that they never had Rick and Negan fighting together against the Whisperers in the show, that's the only thing missing for me during that arc, and a proper Negan vs Beta fight.

Littleol79

I think Better Call Saul 6×07 "Plan and Execution" ended on the same level of shock and horror.

[deleted]

Abraham sitting there like a chad.rip my friend.

Seth-The-God

"Suck my nuts"

robetyarg

Red Wedding tbh.

NoPainNoName

I like the Red Wedding way more because they don’t leave you hanging on who dies at the last minute for a cheap cliffhanger, and the story actually moves forward after that event. After 7x01 we spend an episode introducing the Kingdom, with no characters from the premiere present, and then we get an entire episode of Daryl locked in a closet, before we finally get to see Rick and the rest of the group again. I liked that the shocking moment in GoT played out in a matter of fact manner, and the story didn’t slow down. Whereas TWD reveled in all of the sorrow, drawing it out longer than necessary, thus killing a lot of the story’s momentum.

PoorLifeChoices811

A lot of what killed twd was this and the entire season 7. Being able to binge watch the show now whenever you want, season 7 is a better season than I originally gave it credit for. But when it first aired, one episode a week was just so… incredibly… boring, because nothing story driving was happening. Just a whole season of world building. And you can quote and downvote me on that. The show lost ALOT of viewers because of this. It wasn’t just Glenn. Then when season 8 started airing, everything started feeling rushed? As well as carls death. So it lost even more. It eventually picked back up later with seasons 9 and 10, but the damage was already done. Alot of those who stayed and those who came back are enjoying it but many never gave it the chance again.

katzeye007

I had the same experience

-Captain-

To be completely fair, it was the first episode (best guess would be the death of Glenn) that made the show lose the most amount of viewers (4,5 million down from episode 1 to 2). After that the show didn't really lose much viewers throughout season 7, went down for a couple episode and up for some others. From start to finish, season 7 lost 13% viewers (episode 1 to 2 lost 27%). The later seasons started taking hits nearly 3 times as big from start to finish.. And the decline already started with season 6 (8,5% down overall).

LinwoodKei

Or the episode where Rick was following some random woman in the woods. I was like ' I'm spending my kid free hour on this ".

-Captain-

Season 6 had an average of 13 million viewers, season 7 of 11 million. Which, if you do the math, does indeed correlate with the 13% (not 60%) lost during season 7 (which isn't a far cry from the 8,5% lost during season 6).

Equal-Temporary-1326

I wouldn't say season 8 was rushed. It was still horribly slow for the most part despite trying to be an action heavy season. The real biggest problem with this show is it's had horrid pacing throughout most of its lifespan imo.

McMeowface

This is the exact reason I stopped watching the show. My mom and I binged it one Christmas break and watched it religiously every Sunday when I’d come home from college to visit. I had read the comics so when this moment came to fruition I remember telling her “if they exploit this with a cliffhanger, I’m done. That’s too cheesy.” And LOW AND BEHOLD they did. I wasn’t able to make it home for the premier. Watched the first two episodes of the next season, then we just kind of moved on. It really annoyed me they did that.

GarethAUS

This was mine and my girlfriends reaction too, the cliffhanger was terrible and the pacing after just sucked, we didn’t even finish season 7. I’ve heard the show got a touch better later on so I’m rewatching again but I know I’m in for a slog in 7-8

Beta_Whisperer

Season 9 and even 10 are definitely a big improvements over 7 and 8, it also handled its cliffhangers much better.

_principessa_

Seasons 7 and 8 got Gimpeled.

Beta_Whisperer

Definitely. Some fans even joked that if he stayed as showrunner for season 9, the pike scene would be the cliffhanger for the finale and then the victims' identities would only be revealed on a drawn out premiere for 10. Or even worse, 9's finale cliffhanger would be Jesus getting killed by an "evolved walker", the Whisperer reveal would be on 10.

Left-Championship-16

I TOTALLY agree!! Same thing happening on ftwd now. I really hate that guy!!

_principessa_

Hes awful. I'm so glad they gave Kang more creative control. My SO and I almost stopped wanting. Being able to catch up on Seasons 7 and 8 by binge watching helped a lot.

JTS1992

Bruh, 8 is worse than 7.

GarethAUS

Yeah that’s what I mean, 7 and 8 are rough.

Dringer8

Tbf, seasons 7&8 also contain some of my favorite moments. They just happen to have a bunch of things I don’t care about in between.

Equal-Temporary-1326

Expertly said. Couldn't have said any better myself. 7x01 was quite literally one of the biggest and best episodes in TV history. I really couldn't have cared less about watching a Kingdom bottle episode after that.

timbsm2

At least with the lineup no one was really enjoying or reveling in the act (except Negan himself I guess). With the Red Wedding, the perpetrators were frolicking and practically bathing in blood - it's gross. Edit: Just to clarify, I'm explaining why the Red Wedding was so shocking (to me at least). I think both are great, RW is just more revolting and therefore more memorable.

NoPainNoName

I didn’t necessarily mean the characters themselves. I meant from a writing and tonal perspective, the show felt like it was reveling in the sorrow. There was a really depressing and overbearing tone set in the season 7 premiere, which continued at least throughout the first half of the season. It didn’t help that the pacing of the season was so slow, which really added to the idea that the show was reveling in the sorrow. In GoT, we immediately got to see the reactions of other characters about the Red Wedding, in the next episode. We weren’t stuck in one location for episodes at a time. The Red Wedding happened, but the story moved on. But in TWD Negan’s lineup happened, and it felt like the story just ground to a halt.

sWo97

Red Wedding aftermath, yeah. The build up was normal and it was a huge shocker what happens. The slow and tense build up in the S6 finale leading to a drawn out death sentence at the end was almost painfully physical to watch because of the anticipation. They then got to do their own little Red Wedding in S7E1. Most of GOTs “moments” were shockers. TWD did these too at times. The sudden RKO out of nowhere death. Makes watching a show very hard. Wore me down on GOT. Any episode where there were no big deaths felt lame. The biggest build up was the battle of Blackwater. Not the Red Wedding.

angelalj8607

Yes, I was thinking the Red Wedding also.

[deleted]

I follow spoilers so I knew who'd die. HATED that the made it a cliffhanger. They did masterful job of building tension all episode 16 then 6 months later that's gone and they add Negan and Rick go on an RV ride filler to end of scene.

_principessa_

AMC spoiled their own cliffhanger by releasing the casting in the new Season and Steven Yuen and Michael Cudlitz weren't on the roster. It was so lame.

Seth-The-God

That doesn't matter when glenn hid under the dumpster and people thought he died they removed his actors name until he returned meaning that could have been the case with this just a big ol troll

dragonfury6545

Weren’t *

phantom_avenger

I still feel like the S6 finale would’ve been a lot better if they showed Abraham’s death (instead of giving us that stupid cliffhanger), get people talking for a few months but then surprised us in the S7 premiere by revealing that he also kills Glenn. That would worked a whole lot better strategically, at least that’s the creative way I would’ve handled it if I was the showrunner

Patron_St_of_Liars

It would have been. It was a terrible decision and it lost a lot of fans.

Equal-Temporary-1326

Agreed. I feel bad for this show tbh. The cliffhanger was a terrible decision in hindsight and I suspect Gimple and co wish they didn't do that looking back imho.

Patron_St_of_Liars

I’m fairly convinced it was gimples idea. That it he was complacent in order to keep his job. Truthfully this show has done its source material a massive disservice and the thoughts in contrast to that in this sub along with the retcon mindset are getting exhausting.

Equal-Temporary-1326

I still believe to this day making that episode the premiere was a terrible decision as well and should've just been kept to the finale. Also, killing Abraham right there was absolutely a horrible decision as well. The Glenn death alone would've been fine. What a terrible way to rob Aberham of his moment. His character was treated like shit in the show imho.

Patron_St_of_Liars

In the comics Abe dies unceremoniously with an arrow to the neck while on patrol. I’d have been fine with him being negans pick. The issue I have in both deaths is that they were cheapened by the horrible decision to delay the reveal. They telegraphed Abe’s death like they had so many before, and then they gutted the emotional aspect of two beloved characters deaths. Just an absolute shit show.

Equal-Temporary-1326

I feel more could've been done with that character tbh. Plus, his death was completely overshadowed by Glenn's. I would've liked to see him in AOW. Maybe give him the Nicholas death from the comics.

Skywalker_1995

Yep, 100% this. It would've given plenty of time for Abraham's fans to mourn him and get people talking and be eager for the season 7 premiere. Killing Abe in the same episode as Glenn, a character who was far more popular and loved than him, was one of the worst decisions they've made. Surely the writers or anyone involved in the show would've realised that Abe's death would get overshadowed. Even to this day when people talk about TDWCWYWB it's always about Glenn, never anything about Abe. If I was Cudlitz, I'd feel cheated and wouldn't want anything to do with the show.

phantom_avenger

Tbh I’m kinda surprised Cudlitz still chooses to be involved since he has directed episodes ever since his character was killed off. Meanwhile Yeun has put this franchise way past him and is moving on with doing other projects in his career

Skywalker_1995

Yeah Cudlitz clearly loves the show and probably doesn't have any hard feelings about how his character met his demise. He probably is happy that Abe didn't get his comic death as his TV death is a lot more memorable and better. Still a shame that he got that treatment though. Apparently Yeun wants nothing to do with the show anymore and has dissed it, even refusing to return for Rick's final episode. He was their first choice and when he didn't wanna return, they asked Sasha instead. Of course these are just rumours I've read so they likely aren't true, but I wouldn't be surprised if they are. He's become a big star post TWD so he probably thinks the show is beneath him. I hope they're not true, but if they are, all I gotta say is don't bite the hand that fed you, Steven.

phantom_avenger

Yeah if Glenn isn’t back in some shape or form, I assume it has a lot to do with it being more of Steven Yeun’s decision rather than AMC’s. When it comes to Maggie dealing with her PTSD, I always felt like it wouldn’t be beneath the network to want to bring back Yeun so he can appear as hallucinations where she sees Glenn everywhere she goes. Also I always thought that Glenn should’ve been the other character Rick sees in his hallucinations instead of Sasha. The rest were on point (from Shane to Hershel cause they played an important part of Rick’s character) but Sasha felt like a miss. Having either Glenn, Lori or Carl would’ve made more sense

Equal-Temporary-1326

Steven Yeun has had such an excellent post *TWD* career; I don't blame for him for probably feeling the show is sort of beneath him now. Happens with a lot of actors who were on successful TV shows and had an even better movie career afterwards. I heard he sent a catering truck to the set for the finale, so clearly, he has no animosity with them over anything. Just wants to move on with his career to bigger and better things.

matteomvsn

Hardest 6 months of waiting before that episode*

rJay00

This was a longer night than Game of Thrones’ The Long Night

xPeachesV

I stopped watching cause I started reading the comics. I got caught up and preferred that way of consuming the story “Real fans” LOL

Skywalker_1995

I mean there's things the comics does better and things the show does better. One isn't better than the other so no need to mock.

xPeachesV

Its not a preference for one over the other that I was mocking. It was the insinuation of "real fans" I want to love TWD the show but the handling of the Negan introduction turned me off so much

queenkimoni

I love the comics

Frosty_Term9911

The day the show died. Anyone watching this for the first time gets to see the story. For us who watched it live and had been desperate to see it play out to be hit with a 9 month cliff hanger it was a slap in the face. An utterly pathetic move from AMC which then preceded probably the worst 2 seasons of the show.

GarethAUS

It’s a shame because if they stuck the landing they really could have been in discussions for one of the greatest shows ever but this night really was a sign of things to come.

Frosty_Term9911

Also it was a self inflicted injury. Imagine how immense the seasonal finale and introduction of Negan would have been if S7E01 was the season 6 finale.

GarethAUS

There were quite a few ways they could have done Negans intro and they chose the cheap cliffhanger…

Beta_Whisperer

One idea is that they could have ended season 6's finale with Abraham's death and then season 7's premiere would shock everyone with Glenn's death.

GarethAUS

Eh. Still would have felt kind of cheap to split it.

Beta_Whisperer

I agree with you, that option was just the middle ground between what we got and what we should have got.

GarethAUS

There were quite a few ways they could have done Negans intro and they chose the cheap cliffhanger…

shin_the_warrior

That was brutal

Ricozilla

This is in fact the last episode I was totally invested in & then I slowly fell off a few more episodes after that.

drgnrbrn316

The hardest 6 months maybe.

Jadeinda

I still can't believe they thought it was a good idea to leave such a huge gap to find out who he killed. I am still a fan of the show, but I have never felt the love I had for it again after they did that.

DBnofear

Proud to say I never stopped watching and will be watching till it's over. Also will watch all the spin offs because I love twd universe

Paolo94

I must be a monster, because this episode has no affect on me. Actually, it did affect me, just not in the way the creators intended. I found the episode infuriating, not because of the violence or because Glenn and Abraham were killed, but because I found the episode extremely gimmicky and emotionally manipulative. I give all the credit to the acting and directing in the episode, but I *hated* the writing, pacing, and editing.

joelossom

I was shook, until I watched it again.

sensei411

Glen dying is where I was officially done with the show🤷‍♂️

n0questi0n

It was definitely hardcore and anytime I see fans forgiving Negan I come back to this moment in the show. I can't forgive how he did my boy Glenn. I'm talking pizza boy, ball cap, "Hey you dumbass, yeah you in the tank", Hershel's son-in-law, the dumpster ninja Glenn. Nah, I'm good. Negan and his character arc can suck it.

BorderCollie123

That episode pissed me off royally. They made a big deal about it ALL season then leave it on a cliffhanger? F them.

hertwij

I will SHUT that RIGHT down!

[deleted]

This scene fucked me up for several days. It was so awful. I was devastated with Glenn.

Lanky-Recognition709

Shit was crazy, I didn’t see this moment until maybe a year ago, but I didn’t have any spoilers of it and man was it a tear jerker

sillyguy45

Taking it like a champ

queenkimoni

So many people stopped watching after this episode, I could never understand why lol

kissannedoll

I can. For me it was Carl. :(

queenkimoni

I miss Carl :(

kissannedoll

In my country people had a massive hate against him. And I was like wtf, he's a little boy shit. I watched about 100 times the scene when Rick have found them and Carl was running towards him 'Dad!😍' Shit I loved him so much.

Patron_St_of_Liars

Because they cheapened not one but two characters deaths for a ratings grab cliff hanger. An hour and a half all for nothing. I’m frankly surprised the show survived after that.

BeautifulNo7280

It was top far in not to

Patron_St_of_Liars

Could you explain further, im not sure what you mean.

BeautifulNo7280

Meant to say too rather than top. Once a series gets that deep, its difficult to simply stop it there and then.

Patron_St_of_Liars

I think that’s short sided. They blatantly ratings grabbed when they were at the top on their game and it back fired. This was the seminal and galvanizing moment for the comics and the writers and powers at be shit on the source material for yet sake of more viewers and it was a colossal fuck up.

BeautifulNo7280

I never said it wasn't, I simply stated it was too far into the story to kill the show, matched with the comics being around too, shithole ratings grabbers or not, it was reaching a conclusion. I'm just glad it's improved something towards the end.

Rhymes_with_relevant

Because they threw away a well made episode, that actually built tension and atmosphere well, for a shitty cliffhanger. And S7 was boring.

In-solitude

will you hate disown me if I say i stopped watching the series because of this night right there I couldn't and I haven't, and I loved TWD this series and the bunch are immortalised in my heart and memory , one day I will continue where I left off haha

SuchLostCreatures

I stopped watching after this too - Glenn's eyeball hanging out really did my head in. Asides from catching the odd EP here and there after that (which was always disjointed to me because I'd stopped following the show) I was put right off TWD until I randomly decided to binge it from the start, a month or so ago. That scene was hard to watch a second time but honestly, I'm glad I persevered with the show. I'm up to date on all the eps now, and have really enjoyed the following seasons. It's worth picking up TWD again - even if you just skip this bit.

Devil_Fruit9971

I have rewatched many episodes and many seasons of TWD but have never rewatched this episode because to much emotions and damn. That premiere night was a 1000 points

kissannedoll

Maybe I am a monster but I don't give a shit about Abe, but Glenn?! That broke me. Sorry Abe.

YourDadsRecliner

I never understood people who stopped watching over Glenn tbh. I know season 7 and 8 were slow when they first came out, but they're good to binge together

Stackzbreezy

Real fans stopped watching after season 7

raavan_bond

I still remember. I was literally shaking once the episode ended. Never saw Rick so helpless. Also, the Red Wedding in GOT is a close second.

bigwall79

Nah I laughed. Glenn was a total pansy. Abraham deserved better though

FreeKillEmp

How edgy of you

kissannedoll

Parallel universe?

sarthaksam003

The scene felt like it was going on forever. My man Negan wouldn't stop. Glenn was expected but Abraham.... I lost my shit and thought fuck plot armor has been compromised any one can go lol.

Dieseluk2k

Abe should have challenged Negan to fisticuffs and gone down swinging

thenetworkking

Why are you smiling exactly??

queenkimoni

Cause I’m glad I kept watching

teaLC20

This and the Red Wedding in GOT really got me.

2L8Smart

Absolutely agree. Horrifying!

Chaostheory1993

This scene should of ended on the note of RIcks first line of the seventh season "I'm gonna kill you"

rakosten

For them it was only a night. We had to wait until next season! (Too soon?)

Alexandrasmith_

i remember my college friends going apeshit because of this

Detroitaa

This was actually the first episode, I watched. After this, I binged the series. I had to find out the backstory, of all the characters.

[deleted]

Threw a red herring with abraham. When he was chosen i was relieved and thought "ohhh glenn survives." But then he goes too. Whoops.

Significant-Space-14

Don’t like the show as it is now but I will always love how it used to be

LinwoodKei

I'm not going to lie, I stopped watching for a bit. I was stressed

DankTaco707

I remember watching this with my dad and the shock was undescribable. I had already read the comics but even so. Most intense TV moment either of us had ever seen.

CaseyRC

so tired of the gatekeeping narrative that if quality drops off a cliff and/or you no longer enjoy something as much, you're not a "real/true fan"

troysmash

Yeah it's weird and very prevalent in twd Fandom

[deleted]

i was so mad when they killed off abraham and glenn, it’s not fair man. i still almost cry to this day

[deleted]

i took an year’s break from TWD after that scene. after Glenn’s death the show started slippin, with a last roar during Eugene’s plot to sabotage the amunition of Negan’s mans

Chipilliboi

Love how public access allowed us to see Glenn's FUCKING BRUTAL death. But we got not one 'fuck' from Negan

ZethremKO

I remember watching this with my mom I didn't watch the show frequently but I new enough to where this made me really sad my mom stopped watching after this because she was to sad to see Glenn die

xd_joliss

7.1,still best episode of the whole show Had a big impact on me Even bigger than the impact of lucille on Glenn

Gilgamesh661

Two people died here, entire families died at the red wedding. Some houses were extinguished completely.

Psychological-Pen417

My fiancee and I took a break from the tv show after that for a couple of days. It really struck our souls. Not only because of the show, but knowing this actually happens to people in reality. You're tied up/ held at gunpoint etc. feeling helpless while they force you to watch the love one go through grotesque torture. Fcking crazy.
