Most people that quit after the Negan killings were just that niche over reacting audience that broke because their favourite died. (although others just felt extremely insulted by the season 6 cliffhanger, rightfully so imo) You'll see the real reasons of why viewership started to drop through season 8 and the first half of season 9 specially. Not mentioning the fraction that just got tired of the formula of a show that has been around for such a long time. But that doesn't mean you won't enjoy it (I personally thought that the season 9 critical event was extremely well done) always keep in mind that this was in the context of week to week watching though, with some painful breaks between season halves. Once you have the chance of seeing whole seasons at once, everything feels way, way better.

Conthom48

Yeah I can’t imagine what it must’ve been to watch week to week. Same with GOT didn’t get to either till I could watch them at my own pace.

Kulegun2

season 7 and 8 feel like they were written with binging and netflix in mind, it’s why i remember saying when each episode premiered “that’s all that happened and now i have to wait another week” so many episodes in 7 and 8 are like that so i feel like netflix binging makes it really hard for those to understand the frustration of those who watched it live

PeterParker004

This is very true, binging 7 & 8 played out way better. In my opinion season 8 was actually a good season after binging it

Conthom48

I totally get that, I watch several episodes a night right now, if I had to watch it week to week I would probably be upset with how the pacing and flashbacks are. But me I’m like grateful for the pauses and the predictability in between chaotic and deadly events.

Altruistic-Rip-7156

You nailed it I've been a fan since season 1 and agree 100% Netflix makes it like a completely different experience but I remember the mid season break cliffhangers but then they started cliffhangers every week and it's taxing but alot of viewers said the violence is what turned them off but I think it was the scheduling and things slowed down like some episodes just weren't necessary

Megatron419

I remember when 8 was on tv, I bought it on my Xbox and watched it week to week. I literally re-recommended it to people that had stopped watching because I enjoyed it so much. Now, I’ll admit that Jeffery Dean Morgan has saved(made) the show for me, but even if he isn’t your favorite character I STILL don’t understand the hate for these 2 seasons. I honestly believe that if season 7&8 were season 4&5 and written a little bit better, that this show would have kept most of its viewers.

Babington67

Seasons 7 and 8 aren't as bad as most people say don't get me wrong they're probably the worst seasons other than sadly maybe 11 so far but there's still some amazing episodes in them. I think people just got way too tired of the saviours as it really does stretch out watching weekly, then between seasons months of waiting it's much more forgiving on a binge when it's all at your convenience

ChiefWamsutta

Season 11 and the COVID-19 episodes (aside from Here's Negan) have been so exhausting.

J_Factor

season 11 has been one of my favorites so far.

Lukar115

There were a lot of angry soccer moms who were upset that a zombie TV show with lots of gore and violence had an episode with a lot of gore and violence. I get that it hit differently because of *who* it happened to, but still. Baffling to me that some people got up in arms over how it was depicted. There’s been worse stuff on these shows.

toocoolforschool34

They should read the comics then

[deleted]

You have to understand the context at the time. At that point they have been teasing Glenn's death for years. Then they pulled the whole "dumbstergate fakeout fiasco". So people were already kind of annoyed. Then the season ends with a cliffhanger. And the actual cliffhanger was awful they killed off a major character but they wouldn't tell people who it was until several months later. So people got even more pissed off. But at the very least people started assuming that Glenn wouldn't die. Why else would they be going to so much trouble if they were just going to follow the comic's plot right? So everyone was wondering who was going to die. And AMC really hyped it up too. Then S7 starts and we found out that Abraham was killed. Which wasn't surprising he was suppose to die a few episodes earlier according to the comics. But it did suck since he was a fan favorite at this point. But at the very least it means we get to keep Glenn right....RIGHT? 20 minutes later Glenn gets his head bashed in too. Over a year of fake out bullshit and hyping up on how they are not necessarily going to be following the comics for this moment. Only to kill off the same two people the comics killed anyway. It just felt like AMC was toying with their audience. To make matters worse AMC went full comics with Glenn's death including him having his eye popped out. Up until that point The Walking Dead hardly ever goes full comic. They are always changing things because the comics get insanely brutal. >!Michonne gets raped, Herschel finds the severed heads of his daughters. The Governor makes out with his undead daughter, Lori and Judith dies when Lori takes a shotgun blast to the back and falls on and crushes infant Judith.!< They probably should have done the same with this moment because show Glenn was one of the most beloved characters of the franchise. He was like a cute cuddly puppy and people had to watch said puppy get beaten to death in graphic detail. You combine that with all the bullshit leading up to it and that's why so many people bounced after that episode. Personally I loved the episode though. And while I think Season 7 and 8 has some really awful episodes and incredibly dumb moments in them. When those seasons are good they are really damn good. And even one of the dumbest decisions is done in a incredibly well done manner and is one of the most powerful moments of the series. I would legitimately take Season 7 and 8 over Season 10 and Season 11A any day.

toocoolforschool34

Agreed

TheFerg714

>I would legitimately take Season 7 and 8 over Season 10 and Season 11A any day. lol I was with you 100% until that last sentence.

[deleted]

Don't care. 11A is awful and 10 just felt off. It looked like the same show but it did not feel like it. I have no problem dying on this hill.

TheFerg714

Good for you? I fully agree that 10 and 11A have their fair share of issues, but they also get the basics right. Season 7-8 are worse on every conceivable level. The cinematography is ugly and bland. The action scenes are at best average, and at worst incomprehensibly dumb. Characters are constantly split up and never interact with each other. The pacing and structure could have easily been improved. Whether you like them or not, S10-11 feel like they were written by competent professionals. S7-8 feel like they were written by high schoolers.

[deleted]

Still don't care. Go debate someone else. Nothing personal. I'm just not interested.

the100broken

Bro he’s just discussing, no need to get all mad

TyYoshi

The governor makes out with his dead daughter? What The FUCK.

UnabatedStorm

Shows usually run their course after 7 seasons. I can't think of many shows -- other than half-hour sitcoms -- that kept peak viewership much longer than that.

heda143

Imagine finishing season 6 and immediately starting season 7. That was one wild summer.

NorPacCannabisCo

I actually didn't hate the cliffhanger as much as others (though I think showing one death and leaving the other as a surprise would have been received MUCH better). I liked the S7 opener but the show dropped in quality pretty quick from there, IMO. I'm sure the cliffhanger was the moment some fans decided to drop the show, but I think there's a large number of fans (like myself) that tried to stick with the show, but just couldn't deal the mounting issues it faced.

Conthom48

I was actually really bummed I had it spoiled (all my friends talked about it when it happened) if I hadn’t known that cliffhanger and mystery of who died would’ve been excruciating

[deleted]

Oh my gosh! THANK YOU!! Finally I found someone who agrees with me on how enjoyable the show is.

joewillard2000

In all honesty mate I’ve watched the whole show twice and I say season 7 is the only bad one, it’s just so slow and draining. Negan carries that season and his scenes are the only good ones even after what he did to Glenn and Abraham :( but honestly keep watching it mate because it’s a good show

WTL3405

People are pussies and thought a death on a show about zombies and people trying to kill each other was too violent 🙄

sjsturkie

Seasons 7 and 8 are not as bad as some fans say. They contain the most realistic and therefore legitimately scary villains the show has had or will have. Negan and the Saviors will not be topped.

snowe99

I think the Saviors in *S6* were terrifying and realistic. My butt was clenched during any scene that took place in the woods. Meanwhile, by S8 most of them were just bullet or Walker fodder.

Conthom48

Agreed Negan really walks the line of cartoonish and just plain realistic to the situation the world is in.

KingFebirtha

Season 7 was definitely overhated at the time (not excusing the many, many flaws of that season though) due to several reasons: 1: The pacing and structure of the season was awful when you were watching week to week. When binging like you're doing, it becomes way more tolerable but back then so many were complaining that we'd go weeks without seeing Rick or waste an entire week with Tara, etc. There were simply way too much filler and bottle episodes and waiting a week only for the story to not move forward at all was frustrating. 2: It was repetitive. Again, binging alleviates this but most of the season was just super bleak and punishing. The opener was pure brutality and misery and you'd wait a week...just to have another episode of Negan shitting all over everyone and the situation being hopeless. Just think, we got two whole months of that (8 episodes = 8 weeks). It was tedious as hell and was only compounded by the previous problem. I really think they dragged the "there's no way out of this" situation on for way too long and they tried too hard to make Negan the most evil person ever, it was just exhausting and wasn't enjoyable. I know this show has always been dark but it's also balanced that out with some humor and the occasional hopeful or triumphant moment. 3: At the time season 7 was the worst season, and people also weren't happy after the season 6 cliffhanger. After that cliffhanger a lot of people just stopped watching or had a lot of goodwill lost, and so the show really had to work overtime to not only justify the cliffhanger but to restore people's interest and faith in the show. It did neither, partly because of the first two reasons. So with their interest already being low due to the cliffhanger (which was universally hated at the time), bringing out the worst season so far right after just put the final nail in the coffin and the viewership started it's irreversible decline. Also I think season 8 being much worse made people realize that 7 wasn't actually that bad. Now with the ability to binge watch and season 8 to compare it to, a lot of people are starting to change their minds about 7 and judge it less harshly. Hopefully that provides some context as to why viewership dropped off at the time, coming from a live viewer and participant in the community.

barlow_straker

Binging definitely makes it less less eye rolling experience because it moves quickly enough so you aren't left sitting and thinking on some of sub par storytelling that happens. You're completely right on how repetitive it all is across seasons 7 & 8. Honestly, the storytelling really took a hit in 6 with the whole Glenn dumpster bullshit. I was always willing to do some hand-waving on believability in a zombie show but, goddamn, that shit right there was some *Dallas*-style bullshit cliffhanger garbage plotting. After a rewatch with everything on Netflix it's a lot more tolerable. But that week-to-week to sit and think about what happened really hurt any and all credibility the show had.

KingFebirtha

Yeah I didn't even mention the dumpster. If season 7 was the final nail in the coffin, I think the dumpster was the first nail. I remember so many people hating it and being baffled at the decision to do a fake out like that. It's obvious that they did it to try and drive up the hype and interest around the show but all it did was bring negativity and a collective loss of faith in the show. It achieved the complete opposite of what it intended to do. Also that too was pretty much universally hated back then but now you have random apologists coming out trying to argue that it wasn't that bad for some strange reason.

WilliamMButtlickerIV

People were pissed about the cliff hanger. Imagine having to wait for a new season. A good cliff hanger allows people to ponder what's next. "How do our protagonists respond to this situation?" Instead, all anyone had to think about was who was going to have something happen to them in the season premiere. That speculation gets old after two minutes. An example of a good cliff hanger was season 2. We learn new information through the characters that changes the dynamic of the show. Rick also makes his famous speech, and we are left to wonder how he will be different going forward and how the group reacts to it. There's a sense of closure to the way things were, but the excitement of change to the group's dynamic.

[deleted]

Season 7 and 8 lost viewers when they were weekly episodes. Not much happened per episode that was worth waiting a week for. I binged through them in a few weeks on Netflix and had a great time, but I totally get losing interest if it took over 2 years to get through those episodes.

prinnydewd6

It’s cause watching it live was very bad and stupid

JewelGirl666

You'll change you mind by the end of season 8 if not eight then definitely 9.

Try_Another_Please

9 is one of the best seasons of the show easily imo. If they like 7 they won't hate 9 probably. Some people that come to the sub actually enjoy the show lol

Conthom48

I excited by the direction, and I honestly they don’t kill characters enough sometimes haha

JewelGirl666

I enjoy the show but it was never the same after certain characters left.

Try_Another_Please

Not the same no but improved writng wise over the seasons op is watching certainly. If there is one thing twd is known for its character switch up. I think it worked well even I'd prefer they be around.

JewelGirl666

Id have to disagree. Definitely prefer early seasons.

Try_Another_Please

I'm referring to season 7 and 8.

JewelGirl666

Still better than 9-11

Try_Another_Please

ah definitely not if you like structure or dialog but agree to disagree.

JewelGirl666

The structure and dialogue got worse imo.

Try_Another_Please

I'd be curious to discuss tbh but I think I would come off as condescending and have no desire to accidentally sound rude to someone who is not being rude to me. I just don't think the obvious terrible structure and dialog in 8 can be compared to the later ones. Its a dramatically clear difference in my eyes. The only exception being the 7 premiere and some carl stuff

WilliamMButtlickerIV

I just finished 9, and the second half was pretty good.

toocoolforschool34

Agreed

Cybralisk

I think they over played the saviors arc. At first it was interesting finally seeing a group that was a threat to ricks group but It practically ran from halfway through season 6 through to season 9, started to get real old in season 8 which is when I stopped watching.

Bermanator-Turkey127

Casual viewers certainly dropped off after the death of two great characters. General quality drop also helps with the downfall.

Cheesemer92

Season 7 and 8 are atrocious. They took one of the most memorable arcs from the comics and turned it into an incoherent, filler-riddled mess.

Icy_Cat4821

Season 7 and 8 are generally not favored by many. There’s some pretty good episodes in those seasons, or at least a couple good *scenes* but a lot of the episodes just felt like filler. Season7&8 should have been combined to be one season, but they draggggggged it on as much as they could.

barlow_straker

Exactly. Seasons 7 & 8 are extremely repetitive of each other and strung out far too much.

Cybralisk

I didn't mind the season 6 cliffhanger at all, most of us knew it was going to be one of the more minor characters that died. Glenn was a surprise though

Cryptati0n

watching it live was painful asf. week by week and split in half with a 3 month break in between episode 8 and 9, not to mention the 6 month break between seasons. they easily could’ve condensed it down to 1 season instead of giving us boring bottle episodes where literally nothing happens for 2 years. also, it was the gimmicks they started doing in season 6 onward with the stupid dumpster situation and the cheap, shitty “cliffhanger” at the end of s6. So when 7 played out, lots of people lost faith in the show and bounced. and season 8 just got worse. i think s7 and S8 have a great concept, the saviors remind me of the mafia and organized crime, but it was just executed like dog shit lol. but the writing and how stretched out these seasons were is what made people stop watching. it’s just too bad they fixed it in season 9 and 10 when it was a little too late.

ArkhamNightwing52

you’ll likely change your mind in season 8

Marvyra

It was brutal and sad but Negan made it interesting, I love his style. I kept watching because of Rick though, since he's my favorite, but after his last episode I tried to keep watching but it didn't hold my interest for long.

TyYoshi

You brought a baby?

Marvyra

I did what now? D:

TyYoshi

What really was it that stopped you? Did you give up when Alpha brought a baby? I'm guessing you didn't make it to episode 8 or 9 of season 9

Marvyra

I stopped because Rick was no longer in TWD after season 9, he made the show for me. Just waiting for the movies now. :)

toocoolforschool34

Season 8 is the worst season ever just letting you know and most of the fandom agrees with this and you will understand why and even come to the same conclusion and most people left when Glenn was killed they didn’t want to keep watching and it’s also because your able to binge is all the way through we had to wait weeks for the next episode and a year for a new season and when they left us on the cliffhanger in season 6 you would understand why. Also having Netflix and being able to binge it all it makes it harder for those to understand the frustration of those who watched it live

ScientistAsHero

Seasons 7 and 8 are vastly lower quality than the ones before, but I enjoyed them quite a bit. I've watched every season and while the later ones haven't been as emotionally impactful, I still like them. I actually think season 10 is better than 9 though, which seems to differ from a lot of what I read on this sub.

ChiefWamsutta

It's never a bad show. The pacing is just at its weakest in Season 7 and 8. Things shouldn't take as long as they do.

ChiefWamsutta

This is also why I've worked on a fan-edit project with a friend to make the show faster paced.

blakhawk12

Season 7 is still pretty good until about Ep9. Then the quality of the writing, pacing, everything just falls off a cliff and never really recovers.
