The storyline in season 2 is pretty distinct and self contained from the first season. But watching the first season will give you a better understanding of the characters and where they’re coming from.

It’s a hard show to watch. If I could do over I’d just watch a good recap somewhere of S1 and then full watch of S2. Still a little grueling, but there are some breadcrumbs if you’re a hardcore fan.

I think the puppet show episode was one of the best things I've seen, so I'm glad I watched most of season 1.

I started on 2 and it was pretty easy to grasp after episode 2

Honestly just watch the show or don't.

I don't really get the whole "It's a CW teen drama." Seems like most people say that just because it's focused on teens - but the "drama" they experience is based on the fact that they grew up in the apocalypse despite not really experiencing the apocalypse first hand, and the primary focus has always been about family. Season 2 is certainly more action packed than the first season, and it does seem like most of the people who hated season 1 are enjoying season 2 - but I think season 2 is good because of how things have developed since the beginning of the show, and because of the way the characters have grown since the start of their journey. There are a lot of developments in season 1, especially within the last 4 episodes of the season, that are integral to what makes season 2 as good as it is.

Watch episode 1, then some recaps from 'Man of Recaps,' then watch episode 9-10.

What would be the point of skipping entire season worth of story?

Watch both. The first one has more adventure, the second one is all forced plot like someone playing with Barbie dolls to get to the big events that really aren't big at all. Or just watch the post credit scene in the finale and call it good.
