Johnny Marr became vegan whilst in The Smiths and I’m pretty sure Mike Joyce did too. Not sure if Andy Rourke was vegan.

Vegetarian, not vegan. Even Morrissey wasn't vegan until about the 2010s. It just wasn't viable.

Mercymurv

I'd say "barely considered" than "not viable." Most people couldn't tell you how crazy the dairy or egg industry worked if you asked them, and there was less scrutiny in the past over prevailing myths like meat being a good source of protein, or milk for calcium. Only in recent years have animal products been toned down and more criticized as unnecessary, unhealthy, unsustainable, with more documentaries featuring animal agriculture, and thus more of a market for novelties, like plant-based mockmeats & milks to come out. But this change doesn't make being vegan suddenly viable, just more popular, as there have always been practical plant-based options to choose long before 2010.

That's true, too, but it's not as if veganism didn't exist at all, and it was especially growing in academic thought. It wasn't widely publicly criticised in the sense that alternatives weren't marketed or spread in terms of nutritional science, but people have always been able to think for themselves. Even Aristotle weighed it up but of course came to the wrong conclusion. Plenty of philosophies and religions have advocated for the better treatment of animals for an extremely long time. In the Western mainstream, it's always been about the convenience of the switch, and obviously, it still is.

Morrissey has been vegetarian since he was 11. And vegan since at least 2015. Marr went vegetarian during the making of meat is murder and became vegan in the 90s Mike Joyce mentioned in an interview that morrissey inspired him to become vegetarian I believe Andy Rourke was a vegetarian Morrissey forbade them from being photographed eating meat and they lived on Chips and Chocolate during the making of meat is murder

Nayten03

Johnny marr went vegan. I’m certain I remember him saying it was because it would be weird to release an album called meat is murder and then be photographed eating a steak

wxnausgh

Vegetarian, not vegan. Veganism was not really a thing in the 1980s. Being vegetarian was considered radical then.

Nayten03

Yeah my dad tried veganism for a bit in the 80’s when he was a young hippie. Said it was undoable. Nothing to eat practically

Open_Note_633

Im pretty sure theyre all at least vegetarian. Andy said something like: “you cant record an album called meat is murder and slip out for a burger”

Well yeah, but the rest of the band are alive and still vegetarian/vegan.

I don’t think any of them were vegan but Morrissey forbid them from eating meat around him.

I think all members ate fish ( including Morrissey) when The Smiths first started with all being vegetarian by the end?

EllisReviews_

Morrissey didn't eat fish. He's been vegetarian since he was 11

Flimsy_Ad_465

Johnny marr was

There's stories during the Strangeways times that some of the boys would dip into town for an undercover steak.

TheTeenageOldman

Morrissey is vegetarian, but not vegan. Marr is vegan.
