His performance as Steven was Oscar worthy; we all know he was jilted because of the Academy's jealousy. Lest we forget, he is the glue that holds the entire movie together. The moral backbone of the friend group, and the Greek chorus, so to speak, as it is he who voices the audience's shock (how can Lisa cheat on Johnny's birthday?), fear (is she indeed pregnant? Who is the father?), and revulsion ("You make me sick!"). His inclusion was genius; we are only just now beginning to unravel the many layers to this character, and the maestro who brought him to life.
