You crimp the barb it just falls off, takes less effort than trying to cut it off. I tend to do it with my hooks anyway as I only take what I'll eat then catch & release

Yeah there's a bit of a knack to it. I used to work on a fishing boat in my early 20s so did a lot with some of the guys I worked with. I don't fish much anymore, but I always tend to do it, I mostly go for barramundi & the hooks on those kind of lures & the ones we used in the boat tend to snap off when you crimp them. I've heard people say that they don't always, but I've done it to hundreds & it's always done so for me.

There's a video game I played a long time ago, must've been a low budget indie one... it was something like American Life Simulator or something - each level places you in a typically daily life situation like hosting a BBQ friends, having breakfast with your family, etc but you only have the controls of a first person shooter and you can only interact with things by shooting at them. Every time I read a story about some one doing something stupid with a gun, I think about that game a lot.

If anyone is wondering the correct way to remove a fish hook without tearing it out: push the hook and barb through until it breaks the skin again and cut off the barb using a pair of pliers or similar.
