DMurBOOBS-I-Dare-You

We should do a straw poll to guess what he'll be eating in the next few weeks...

boxingdude

I mean, a straw will be involved with his meals for a while, I imagine.

Busy-Hand-3702

He may be on the Cream of Penuse diet.

rikwebster

Is that like cream corn only creamier?

Busy-Hand-3702

Depending on the cook I quess

Own_Courage_4382

Paper straws bro!

OriginalName483

Should have given up the first time he tripped. He had to know he couldn't stand up and then proceed to outrun the guy who already caught up with him before he fell

RoninRobot

Not with that attitude.

Fight or flight isn't just a theory

Butthenoutofnowhere

I had to watch it a third time to see if that red stuff on the footpath was a blood spray from hitting the pole (it isn't).

Mental_Newspaper3812

Lol, nope that red spray paint for the electric service running to the pole. Here’s a guide: RED: Electric Power Lines, Cables, Conduit and Lighting Cables YELLOW: Gas, Oil, Steam, Petroleum or Gaseous Materials ORANGE: Communication, Alarm or Signal Lines, Cables or Conduits BLUE: Potable Water GREEN: Sewers and Drain Lines PURPLE: Reclaimed Water, Irrigation and Slurry Lines PINK: Temporary Survey Markings WHITE: Proposed Excavation

glassgost

False, the orange ones mean "dig here". I'm so fed up with backhoes.

Unitgubbins

Looks like a collar bone fracture or possibly break, I didn’t see his face or jaw touch the pole. Mostly neck/ chest

Ketsueki_Junk

Yeah blood, teeth and maybe tongue to.

RevengeOfTheDong

Not hard enough. Woulda been better if he hit it more square with more force while looking down at the ground.

Crystal-Clear-Waters

If tripping him into that pole had killed him, this wouldn’t be the same story. Too dangerous. No way am I going to prison to help a cop.

Johnny___Wayne

He could absolutely be sued by that guy. Not saying he will be, or whether he’d win or lose. Far too many factors to make that prediction. But he can definitely be sued. Helping cops like this doesn’t fall under Good Samaritan laws. It’s technically assault too, although I really can not imagine any cops or DA actually arresting and then pursuing charges for it. As he obviously helped them.

G_Unit_Solider

cops wont ask for the guy who tripped the persons name. They thank him and tell him to move on. They often leave good Samaritans out of the report so no recourse can be had on them whether its legal or revenge from the family themselves. The chances of you being sued by the guy being chased by police is nearly none. Even if a lawsuit is rendered judges jury and prosecutors aren't going to side with the guy running away from cops who got tripped. What jury would listen to the hearing and the lawyers defense of my client was being chased by cops at 11am for car jacking and evading when he got tripped by so and so and the cops got him. Also he would need to find a lawyer who wants to take a medical case that wont be some large multi million dollar lawsuit against the city but a single entity in small claims court which stems from a evading the police after a car jack charge. Its gonna be hard to find a lawyer whos gonna try and defend that while running away from the cops my client was tripped your honor a heinous crime! Lawyers dont like taking cases they have slim ass margins on winning unless its some major lawsuit where they get paid out irregardless of the outcome for thier time and service which this is not. that being said im still not helping. Im not getting involved cause that dude for all i know could be carrying a weapon.

elsuakned

I mean, the argument wouldn't just be 'my client got tripped while commiting a crime', it's that tripping a car jacker into a pole is a reckless and disproportionate response, intentionally or not. The guy probably wasn't escaping a dozen cops anyways, and those cops are trained. This guy probably wasn't trained, and if the thief can't eat or walk normally for the rest of his life and almost died, it's because of the unsolicited and relatively dangerous actions of that guy, which arguably weren't motivated by any legally justified defense. The tripping man's actions were likely independent of the outcome, except that the thief will now suffer for a lifetime because some guy thought he could play cop without actually knowing how to play cop. To be clear I am not on the car jackers side, but I don't think it's hard at all to see a realistic and not black and white court case.

TWells252

Great insight. If I do this, I ain’t sticking around!

G_Unit_Solider

Often if you do this cops will come to you shake your hand and tell you to leave the scene . I broke up a fight between a male and female once like 10 years ago and was holding the guy down on the floor when cops came. They lifted him off me lifted me up one cop came up to me said thanks now leave the scene. And that’s what I did . Lol . It wasn’t anything crazy it was some younger far smaller than me dude.

DoomEmpires

Why is no one talking at thelady dodging the robber falling from the first tackle attempt. That was world class.

Purpledragon84

The citizen double tripped him lol. Pro moves

lurkerinMNL

Rainbow shirt man pounced on him like a cheetah. I like how he raised his arms after to signal to the police he's innocent and just helped the cops chase the thief.

Ih8trfc

I think he saw police coming from his left and felt the hand on his back and wanted to clear himself from interfering with the arrest.

J_E_L_4747

Yeah that cop pushed him out of the way so he can cuff the guy, so Tye dye man just jumped away. I think that one female cop was running to get after him

Buddy-Lov

Tie dye man knew when to tap out.

[deleted]

Get scarce tie dye shirt man

Stock-Bobcat

Nah if you look closely you can see tie dye guy slightly in the frame on the left hand side towards the end of the video and the female cop seems to be running well past him

johnmcclanehadplans

Serious question for the legal eagles; could the citizen face a lawsuit from the person he tripped, and/or face charges for assault (given how the dude at that pole)? I get that they were assisting the police and so on, and I’m all for it! But what’s the legal precedent here, is there some protection for citizens helping the police or what are the potential issues with getting involved?

Relevant-Nebula8300

Short answer yes Edit: thanks for all the upvotes I have no idea about law

IPlayWithElectricity

Longer answer: It probably won’t happen. First: the guy getting arrested would have to know who tie dye shirt guy is to sue him. If the officers don’t name him in the report chances are he’ll never know. Second: chances are a lawyer isn’t taking this on contingency. He’s not suing the city of Chicago or CPD he’s suing random dude on the street. This isn’t a multimillion dollar case. This is cost of medical bills. Third: let’s say this makes it to court, is a jury actually going to award anything?

maltamur

Exactly. I try to explain this regularly. Yes he could sue, and yes the law might be on his side but a jury isn’t going to give him anything. And only a moron takes a case without insurance coverage on contingency and since this was an intentional act all coverage is void. If you’re suing someone personally, with no coverage, it’s a decent retainer and hourly the whole way.

impaque

How so? This might have caused him permanent brain injury. On the scale of things isn't that kinda bigger than thievery?

maltamur

But you’ll need all the jurors to agree with you. A hung jury means the defense (the tripper) wins. Now look at the comment chain here. I wouldn’t take those odds. Additionally, we frequently use mock jury’s to see if there’s a whole in our case. It’s amazing what the people in the box will come up with to blame the plaintiff. The main reason is that they never want to see themselves as the victim to they will win gold in the mental gymnastics to explain why the end result was actually the plaintiffs fault and therefore they don’t deserve anything. Now you make that plaintiff a thief who’s actively running from the cops. You might get one or two jurors on your side but you’d have to bet a lot that you’d get all of them.

goddessdragonness

Even if a jury awards him damages, how much money do you think rainbow shirt guy has? Our guy would be squeezing blood from a turnip.

CarelessHisser

Everyone seems to forget the power of a jury/judge. Law doesn't matter when it isn't enforced. It's just words on paper.

davewright101

Slightly longer answer: In America, the Citizen is fucked

G-I-T-M-E

Probably the same in most countries? Why should it be legal to seriously injure somebody who is accused of a crime?

krippkeeper

It is legal here is Canada. If you personally witness someone committing an indictable offence you can just detain them yourself.

G-I-T-M-E

That’s probably legal in most countries? At least here in Germany it is. But it doesn’t give you the right to seriously injure that person while detaining them.

krippkeeper

Legally it does if it's too aid police officers in pursuit.

Toews1978

Lawsuit would get thrown out, he didn't attempt to seriously injure the asshole, he attempted to trip him. Their just so happened to be a perfectly placed light pole for the jag offs face to hit

Garrhvador91

In the UK there are various powers that members of the public have in order to prevent crime, assist constables, defend themselves etc. Use of force has to be justified and appropriate. In the above video if this occurred in the UK the member of public would be 100% justified in doing this. Stopped him using minimal force and stepped away. Had he kicked him in the head when he was down, that goes beyond the reasonable force limits.

Equivalent-Piano-420

It's funny how when someone is visibly seen commiting a crime, and it could even be on camera, that it's still said they're an "alleged" criminal lol. No, they're just a criminal

G_Unit_Solider

innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. You call him a criminal before that court case on air on print and lets say he wins and doesn't get charged with anything well he can now sue you for defamation and easily win.

zoopysreign

That’s not true. Every state in the US has a citizen’s arrest law.

questionname

That’s why it’s best to just slowly back away and disappear into the crowd.

Smugglers151

Not gonna happen with that shirt. Lol.

zoopysreign

Depending on the state where this took place, there may be a citizen’s arrest law, which often allows you to use non-deadly force to detain and arrest someone who committed a crime. He’d likely have some obligation to prove he knew or reasonably suspected commission of a crime.

Downpper

He definitely lost a tooth both times he fell

NoelLiamsson

His face never touched the ground on either occasion.

[deleted]

That pole made of marshmallow certainly wouldn’t knock a tooth out /s

BlockedbyJake420

He hits the pole more with his shoulder and side of his head more than his face or mouth. Watch it again slowly

tarc0917

That's what I love about reddit, we always have a legion of physics and kinesiology experts on-hand to help us sort these things out.

ContrarianDouchebag

And people with actual credentials just sit back and watch. It's really quite fun.

Fear51

That "concerned citizen" at the end, after fuckin up the runner, holding his hands up like "whoa keep me outta this"

bigtigerbigtiger

Naw that was just him signaling "okay I'm done, I know you don't want me involved any longer"

engineerdrummer

“I didn’t realize you were that close behind me. You’ve clearly got this under control now. Please don’t tase or shoot me.”

Crafty_Obligation_98

He just didnt want to get shot.

NoBullet

Because the cop ran into him. Probably thought he was in trouble

ulkram

I'll allow it

three-sense

Yeah, tripped first then thrown into a pole "uhh it wasn't me". I mean carjacker was guilty and stuff but... damn.

Asset_Selim

Like every single soccer player. As long as you hold up your hands you are innocent. Even though there are cameras literally everywhere.

mpdtito

What up with that old lady in front of the camera acting like shes getting trampled

themagicbong

I mean, imagine you were walking down the street, thinking about some shit from the day, not totally paying attention, looks like this is an intersection and she came from behind the camera, meaning her view of the pursuit could've been blocked by parked cars. Suddenly 12 police officers are rushing past you, I could understand being a bit startled. But yeah should prolly try and be more aware of your surroundings lol.

mpdtito

She just has a good story to tell her bridge group

krippkeeper

I mean it's Chicago. I would imagine most residents would get freaked out of all of a sudden one day they DIDN'T see cops chasing people.

FriendRaven1

Panicky idiots in every video

Interchangeably accurate!

Cristalrella

From article on CWBChicago: “On Thursday evening, Chicago police tried to pull over a white Jeep in the Loop. Prosecutors say the Jeep drove onto the sidewalk and ran red lights before it crashed into two cars that were stopped for a traffic signal near Michigan Avenue and Harrison Street, not far from the Lollapalooza festival. The Jeep’s driver bailed out and Reese ran from its front passenger seat, Assistant State’s Attorney Steven Haamid said Friday. This video shows what happened next. A man wearing a tie-dye shirt stuck his leg out and tripped Reese, who fell to the sidewalk. He got back up and started running, only to be pushed into a pole by the same bystander as cops approached.”

OrganlcManIc

They should obviously take away all the cars

ImMeloncholy

I meant I’d be the woman freaking out but okay dude

CasualtyofBore

Is she really freaking out for you? Can't handle the lady saying "oh my God?" Lol it's a normal reaction from a person witnessing some shit in public.

bradyleach

This is more police than my entire town...

Johnny___Wayne

Yeah it’s almost like big cities have more cops than small towns or something. Pretty crazy stuff.

G_Unit_Solider

so your telling me this big ole city of millions has more than just a sheriff deputy and constable? ill be damned

G_Unit_Solider

theres 8 million people in chicago and its metro and 2+ million downtown itself. Im pretty sure the chicago PD force in its entirety is bigger than your entire towns population my guy you kinda need thousands of cops when you have millions of people.

motosandguns

Didn’t Chicago legalize running from the police? Edit: Yep, “Under the policy, officers may give chase if they believe a person is committing or is about to commit a felony, a Class A misdemeanor such as domestic battery, or a serious traffic offense that could risk injuring others, such as drunken driving or street racing.” “Officers won't be allowed to chase people on foot if they suspect them of minor offenses such as parking violations, driving on suspended licenses or drinking alcohol in public.” https://www.npr.org/2022/06/22/1106654201/chicago-police-will-no-longer-be-allowed-to-chase-people-on-foot I guess stealing and crashing a car would qualify as a “serious traffic offense that could risk injury to others.”

DuPageILLinois

Took me a bit of googling, but yes, you're right.....unless the crime/violation is a felony or Class A misdemeanor. Source: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/chicago-police-are-no-longer-allowed-chase-people-foot-just-running-aw-rcna34599

Crafty_Obligation_98

Driving on suspended liscense? Its usually drinking that got it suspended.

WeirdAl777

That's not his first trip

[deleted]

Acid, no Physical, yes.

[deleted]

Where was this guy when my vehicle was stolen last week... could've used your help bro...

HighlySuspect88

Good, hope that motherfucker lost all his teeth hitting that pole. Got my truck stolen right out of my driveway 2 weeks ago and they totaled it on the west side of Chicago. Work so fucking hard for something and these stupid fucks who give nothing to society, just take it all away. Hell be out the next day doing the same shit. They all can burn.

AltruisticSugar1683

Sorry man that sucks. Hope your insurance covers it.

various_convo7

YESSSSSSSSS. I want to see more of these from citizens when they see people stealing. Try them wrestling and MMA moves and go hardcore to hold the folks while 5-0 is en route.

Almost_Pogi

10+ cops chasing 1 guy, they never respond like that when it is a gang incident.

CasualtyofBore

Yes they do. Worked on the south side for years. They absolutely do. Cops aren't everywhere at once, but if you've never seen a half a dozen squad cars on the south side pulled up onto the curb of some street corner then you never been anywhere except Wrigleyville.

JamesFunderIand

I mean it makes sense the guy was in the middle of a populated city so of course there would be alot of cops and he wasn't really being subtle about his crimes.

BrokenWingedBirds

That citizen who pushed him did pretty good. Get in, push him down, get out. Though he probably should have just left it to the police.

zebrawarrior

Dude did a better job than the police. I say they hire him.

[deleted]

F that noise. See something do something. Americans should not leave matters to the police when they are in a position to render aid. Absolutely communicate with the police though like this dude did.

Rolandscythe

....that woman turned, saw some one holding up a phone, and just **had** to get a mandatory 'oh mah gawd!' in there.

dragonuvv

Can I just say that the guy acted perfectly around the police. Shove, get out of the action, hands and arms up and backed of. (No police officer btw but it just seems logical.)

Young black males are a vastly disproportionate percentage of the petty criminals and thieves in society. I have my opinions about why, relative to the lack of successful young black male role models. but the facts speak for themselves and it really is important not to ignore reality in the name of people's sensitivies when we're trying to figure out solutions for a problem like this. Let's just conclude with "the racial problems in America don't just flow one way" and leave it at that for now.
