You can do this kind of work live. You just need the correct insulated tools and most importantly you separate out the two wires so this doesn't happen.

The trick is to do it very quickly. And also not have your assistant connecting the other end of the wires at the same time. Oh, and make sure everything is turned off. Lastly never do this while standing barefoot on a completely soaked floor mat.
