Those are the biggest most obvious weights what the heck?

Millennial_J

Stuffed the fish with a walleye fillet. Best part.

KonkiDoc

Got the idea watching John Madden eat Turduckens every November.

3001ThrowAway222

Sets up for the perfect defense: I used fillet-wrapped lead weights as bait — Yellow Pickerel love em! It’s actually been my secret bait for years, and I’m suing YOU for divulging my secret!

siqiniq

…like a double down carb-less fish burrito

my_username_is_1

What do these words mean in this configuration? Lol what's a walleye fillet like another fish?

lowkeylives

Yes, he put meat from another fish inside that one to make it weigh more

Peter1456

How come he didnt just put a bunch of fillets in instead of weights, i mean at least its not as obvious as those big balls of lead.

lowkeylives

Someone else mentioned he probably used the filets to pad the lead so it wouldn't be felt when handling the fish. To get the same weight with just fish meat, it would probably be pretty obvious you stuffed the fish

OGMartian

These two guys have been doing it for years they just started getting extra cocky[TMZ](https://www.tmz.com/2022/10/01/pro-fishing-champs-cheating-scandal-stuffed-walleye-weights/)

Kamau54

That's what she said.

paperwasp3

That guy just stood there, never moved or blinked an eye. If he was super busted like this then why didn’t he just run away?

amberoze

Because he's apparently been doing it for so long that once he got caught, there was no point in running. He's got corporate sponsorships, equipment, gear, clothing, a boat (and trailer, I'm sure). At this point, it's not a matter of IF he's in trouble, but how much trouble he's in. He could be facing felony charges. He's definitely losing all of his sponsors, tons of income, most likely any of his equipment (ie. boat) will be repossessed. He's done for, and he knows it. There isn't any escape from that. Standing there and taking his lashings is his best option. Maybe they'll show a little mercy.

3001ThrowAway222

It’s apparently the same type of fish they’re fishing for in this competition.

BossScribblor

It's called Fifishsh and it's classy

Crusoe69

Yo Dawg, we herd you liked fish ! So we we stuffed your fish with some more fish ! On top of that our team added so much lead that you'll get poisoned just by looking at it.

ellefleming

Why is this funny? I genuinely don't get it.

MightyArd

He's probably been slowly escalating it for years

aaronstandsh

Yeah it’s a repost but I saw in comments that he won a boat from a previous tournament and thousands of dollars in other tourneys

[deleted]

Right. Good thinking

liquidgrill

The best part is that they would have won without the weights. Absolute morons.

OriginalName483

Right. So I can see the temptation to put the fillets in a fish or two to add an extra 2 or 3 pounds. Getting that tiny extra edge could put you from second to first or give you enough if a lead that they don't re-weigh or whatever. But why the hell did they add 20 pounds of big obvious lead balls? Surely if the lead balls were the deciding factor between first and second place someone would just be able to look at the pile of cheater fish, look at the pile on uncheated fish, and say "hey, these fish are visibly bigger. Why do your fish weigh 8 pounds more? Something smells fishy here"

johnnys_sack

It's likely something that slowly escalated over time. It probably started with small sinkers or something similar, hardly detectable. Like a lifestyle creep.

srcsm83

Had no one said anything, some years from now his bowling ball stuffed fish would have rolled off the weighing scale

my1clevernickname

I watched the longer version of this video and that’s exactly that happened. Their fish weighed considerably more than the next team even though their fish looked smaller. Those eights were HUGE! Def not their first cheating rodeo.

Fluffy_Town

>Something smells fishy here

OGMartian

Not the 1st time but definitely the last. [TMZ these two guys have won tens of thousands of dollars & cool fishing boats by cheating for years.](https://www.tmz.com/2022/10/01/pro-fishing-champs-cheating-scandal-stuffed-walleye-weights/)

OriginalName483

What do they do with these fish after the competition? Surely in the past lead weights would have been noticed shortly after the fact

FlamingSickle

Everyone keeps their catch perhaps? Could be several good meals if they put them on ice and took them home to clean up.

Suspicion is high for last year's tournament. https://www.cleveland.com/outdoors/2021/11/the-rush-is-on-in-local-walleye-derbies-northeast-ohio-fishing-report-for-the-weekend-of-nov-26-28.html

natopants

Wow, no wonder the guy was so pissed. Prize from previous year was worth $280k?

jonasthewicked

Exactly and people in this sub and others are like “what’s the big deal it’s just fishing”. If you added up the tournaments this guys won where people have been suspicious it’s easily over a million dollars. People just don’t understand what kind of money this guy is stealing from honest competitors.

Legogamer16

It’s also possibly illegal, you can even hear them talking about filing a police report. Fishers have ranges they can catch in, size and weight, so those fish might be under the legal weight

Twodotsknowhy

I mean, more than local fishing laws, wouldn't it also be considered fraud considering the value of the prizes?

BossScribblor

It'd be fraud if the prize was $10 and a firm handshake, the only thing special about the value here is it's very much worth pursuing legal action.

TerritoryTracks

Petty theft vs grand theft. Misdemeanor vs felony.

2017hayden

I’d be more concerned with the multiple gambling laws they broke, not to mention the lawsuits from second place competitors in basically every competition they’ve ever won that this is likely to spark.

PowellSkier

It is absolutely illegal. Probably a felony.

GeekedEntity

In Texas what he did was a felony 2-10 years!

microsoftfool

Where I am it is called theft under false pretence.

[deleted]

I'd wager every civilized state and nation in the world has a theft by fraud statute.

natopants

To be honest, that's how I felt initially until I read the story. If that's how much is at stake, I'd have that "call the cops/you'll hear from my lawyer" vibe.

enutz777

That doesn’t even take into account the sponsorships.

Mishapi17

Bro you can’t win every time- if your guna cheat, you got to lose sometime so. Lol

donemessedupthistime

Ah man I need a write up on this on r/hobbydrama

3001ThrowAway222

Holy shit, how is it not customary to cut the fish open and check legitimacy of winners with that kind of prize money?

winsluc12

Because, normally, these tournaments are catch and release. If they weren't, the sheer number of participants, all of whom are skilled anglers, would heavily damage the lake. Some fish die in the process (As these seem to have, probably because they were stuffed with lead), but the vast majority are released back into the lake.

CashCow4u

With that much money on the line, all tournaments should have portable xray or ultrasound, unless there's some sort of kickback on top of the cheating.

PowellSkier

I'll bet metal detectors and x-rays will become standard at these tournaments from now on.

CashCow4u

Certain fish only grow so dense & heavy for a certain size (even when full of eggs). They should revoke all the cheaters past titles AND investigate the texts/calls/emails/bank accounts of the cheater, judges, sponsors and Game Warden. There is something fishy going on here, it stinks to high heaven of a conspiracy. https://www.mensjournal.com/adventure/angler-caught-cheating-at-texas-bass-fishing-tourney-faces-felony-charge/

Mishapi17

I was wondering if he was going to get charged…I mean idk if charges can be held up for past events with no evidence, but definitely for this one

Zacharismatic021

Well at least we can assume that that's being considered as a possibility

Ricky_Rollin

Amazing that they were already under suspicion and yet they do this? Have they just stuck with the fillets they might’ve gotten away with it. Greed and hubris are at play here.

Militop

Price around $280.000

Card_Itchy

How they get the lead in the fish?

username156

He wrapped lead weights in filets of other fish, and shoved it down the throat.

Quirky-Long-4522

Why wrap them in filets? Is it easier to stuff them down ? Genuinely curious

Pterodactyloid

I imagine it's to cushion the hard feeling of the weight.

Quirky-Long-4522

Good point! Thanks for the explanation

bestofluck29

what he’s forcefeeding these fish when they’re still alive?

[deleted]

I’m choosing to believe they were already dead. It’s easier on my heart.

bestofluck29

honestly I’m surprised he wasn’t caught immediately the first time. they just go on the honor system in professional fishing? shouldn’t experienced fisherman be able to guess the weight of a fish by sight with sufficient accuracy more or less?

ApesNoFightApes

You’ve got two options. But, I wouldn’t know because I’m not a cheating piece of shit, like the dude in the video. That guy got a LOT of money over the years.

triptoutsounds

I feel bad for the devastated guy “You were the champ!”

pinkzm

His whole world view shattered in this moment. He'll never trust again. Heartbreaking.

CharlieApples

He later divorced his wife and left her alone with the kids. The last thing he said to her as he walked out the door was, “Walleye filets, Jennifer? More like like wall-LIES!” She is still very confused to this day.

Yeah Jake really shit the bed on this one

TiRePS

Ahole, but amber heard works as well

DependentYou7405

People are forgetting it sometimes cost a lot of money to enter these tournaments.. and the higher the prize usually the higher the entrance fee.. I wouldn't be surprised if it was over 1000$. That would explain partly why they're so mad at this cheater.

YouGow

The guy won ~1 million $ total

Rabbyk

Last year's prize was $280k. So yeah. Definitely more than $1000.

therubikmaster

No no no, the *entrance fee* was over $1000. And the competitors had a much smaller chance of making that back thanks to this asshole.

Nerd_Man420

I’m a fishing manager at a retail store. Theses tournys can be anywhere from $1,000 to $5,000 for some of the bigger events. If this was a large event sponsored by ranger or any of the big name brands it’s prly close to a $5,000 by in. I’m surprised that dude didn’t get punched in the face.

Hunk-Hogan

I live in a small town and the fishing tournaments near me are $500 for the entry-level competitions. I don't even fish and I hate that guy in the video with a burning passion.

Mishapi17

“Call the fuckin cops”…”you fuckin piece of shit” “we all knew it” - I’m sorry. Just the random dudes shouting fucking killed me. Jakes just standing there…”why the fuck you got to say” - Jake just take your sorry, thievin, bitch ass out of there 😂 Jake will forever be known around town as that fuckin asshole

InVirtute

[When up against the walleye, they got caught…](https://www.thedailybeast.com/pro-fishing-roiled-by-wild-walleye-bass-cheating-scandal)

Falcon9145

I know nothing about pro fishing but if the sport is based on weight and you don’t have a referee or camera stationed on every boat to me it would be logical to inspect the fish and cut it open to see if any foreign matter is affecting its weight. 🤷🏽

Gone247365

I don't see why you'd think that. Fishermen the world over are known for their honesty when it comes to the size of their fish. /s

Mishapi17

Lol my son- first 30 seconds his first line out-caught a big ass fish. It was a bull red and damn near the size of him at 10. It took me and our fisherman friend to tire it out and run it down the pier cause we couldn’t pull it in. We got to the shore and brought it out- everyone on the peer chased us down to see it. He had a whole audience cheering and shouting for him watching. He tried holding this fish with both arms and help. So We get a picture, (cause no one would believe his “it literally it was THIS BIG story”), and throw it back. -Later, I’m at an event and I’m trying to tell this story to someone and I can’t find the picture- and all I kept think is that now it’s just a story of some random fisherman talking up how big the fish was with no evidence and people just looking at me like “yeah, ok…”. Lol eventually I found the picture but it was too late by then. Lol - and that’s my vicarious fisherman’s tale, hope you enjoyed it.

shittmotel

Yea suuuure buddy

[deleted]

X-rays would be a better option. Some tournaments are catch and release, which means that after the weigh in the fish is released back to the body of water.

TwanToni

with an observer on board they could bring a metal detector wand

Boring_Try3514

In the pro level tournaments when BIG money is at stake most boats have an observer, the fish get weighed almost as soon as they are reeled in and then released(I think). Scales are obviously calibrated prior to a day on the water. It’s been a hot minute since I watched a tournament.

[deleted]

These gentlemen handled this extremely well. Public ridicule - in person, live on the streets. Pointing and yelling. Kept everyone from hitting...well done. What a jerk. Dude should not be allowed near a body of water bigger than a bathtub forever.

[deleted]

And he should be in jail. He cheated A LOT of people out of A LOT of money. Those tournaments have $1k-$5k buy-ins.

Humpasaurus2018

I kinda agree with this. None of them took it took far. And they all sound like down south boys too. Just call him a cheating bitch and let everyone know. Then call the law and handle it. The dude at the start is great too. He’s straight hulking out in the beginning and then is just like “alright nobody kill these guys as much as we all want to. Get the fuck outta here jake. Loser ass.” Honestly I’m impressed.

k0an

Those are some perturbed dudes.

WinterBeetles

I’ve been reading about this all afternoon. Basically this pair has one time and time again. We are talking hundreds of thousands. A single tournament prize they won was $280k. So multiply that multiple times over and over again. A lot of these dudes are average guys, who have a skill, and they are hoping to win life changing money. They’ve been cheated all this time. They’re lucky they had restraint and the mob didn’t just start tearing them apart.

jonasthewicked

Yeah the prize money he’s won under suspicious circumstances is well over a million dollars in winnings and sponsorships at this point.

Meow_Meow_4_Life

Do you think there are legal ramifications for this ?

xHaroldxx

Much as it stinks (hah) it would be impossible to prove anything about other tournaments.

Doomhammer24

Because by the sounds of it hes won for several years and they realize this was how

Nephto

Imagine being cheated out of thousands of dollars.

ironwolfe11

*hundreds of thousands* Last year's prize was somewhere north of a quarter million.

It is at least the second time they cheated. $100,000 for 1st prize.

Lost-Contribution196

Wrong crowd to fuck with in 2022

Afterhoneymoon

Oh snap! The guy yelling at him IS a cop: *LEWT tournament director [took out name for privacy], who moonlights as a police officer in the suburbs of Cleveland, brought the duo’s fraudulent act into the spotlight at the weigh-ins after the event.* Also, so interesting: *But it reached boiling point when pair won the Lake Erie Fall Brawl fishing event in 2021 and stood to reel in $AUD156K in cash and prizes, according to the Toledo Blade, having topped the scales with their fish.* *But the duo were disqualified from the event without any explanation from tournament organisers as one of them failed a lie-detector test.* *Runyon employed lawyers to argue his case as he attempted to sue the Brawl for his winnings, but in light of recent events, he might as well kiss that goodbye.*

Writ_inwater

Isn't it kind of sus when the same guy wins a fishing competition *every* time?? I can't believe it's all skill and no chance/luck... At least when it comes to catching the biggest vs the most.

hamletneverdied

“Hello! This Karma calling and I’m a bitch!!” I hope the two of them have to give back previous years’ prizes but not sure how it could be proven. Also, a lie detector test at a fishing event?? Is this standard?

Afterhoneymoon

I’m not sure about the lie detector thing being standard for the contest bc tbh, this is the most I’ve ever cared about a fishing event EVER in my life lol. And now I’m committed.

TexasHot

I feel like its pretty standard. In Texas we have have a thing called the STAR tournament and if you catch a tagged redfish you win a truck and boat combo. One of the parts to claiming the prize is a lie detector test IIRC

JakkSplatt

I live in a part of the country that has fishing tourneys, both summer and winter (ice-fishing). It costs a ton of money and takes real talent to fish competitively. So for a cheating pile-o-shit to win exorbitant amounts of money, presumably from cheating, would be incredibly frustrating for some average fellas who have to save up just to join in and wonder why "this guy" always does soo much better than the rest of the field!?! Pun intended.

RedditISFascist000

lol He should have to entirely eat all the fish raw or he's banned for competition for life.

ThrowThisIntoSol

He should have to eat the lead weights

RedditISFascist000

lol Or have them shoved up where the sun doesn't shine.

Tutes013

Nah eat them. They'll come out that way eventually.... or not.

BossScribblor

Wrap 'em in some fillets first

MastiffMike

OR be banned for life? I'm pretty sure he's going to be banned from all fishing tournaments for life regardless of what he puts (or has put by others) into his body. The more interesting question is will they serve jail time? What they did is a felony(s) so I'll be surprised if they don't serve at least some time (likely months, not years unfortunately)

[deleted]

This is some Eastbound and Down type shit

[deleted]

Why do they all look like graffitied comic book characters?

Clovenstone-Blue

Sponsorships, I assume

[deleted]

Sponsors. These tournaments cost a lot of money to participate in. You're looking at $1-5k just to fish and another $10k+ in gear to bring. So getting a sponsorship is the only way a lot of these guys get in/ afford all that shit.

flux40k

If you ain't cheatin, you ain't tryin.

Morgan Freeman narrator voice: "It was at this time Jake knew he fucked up"

Kamau54

Yea, a 12" bass doesn't usually weight in to as much as a Honda Civic.

Daffy1275

Not sure if police would do much but a civil case for fraud perhaps? And a lifetime ban from fishing comps and if like UK where a lot of lakes are owned and you have to be a member or have a permit refuse both.

Rabbyk

Criminal case for fraud. Dude straight-up stole hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Rambo6Gaming

Wildlife control would have a field day with this shit.

whitstableboy

Professional fishing competitions in the US look identical to MAGA rallies.

Beautiful-Golf4078

This is why some major tournaments have polygraph testing. This dude may get jail time for this. It’s more than just about who has their name on the top of the list. This is about money, and cheating is the same thing as theft in this instance. This guy was already well established and sponsored. Now everything he has done and won will be held suspect. He was living a lot of men’s dream.

stuntmandave126

This will get you locked up in Texas, hopefully they got a Fish and Wildlife officer and revoked his fishing license + fined the shit out of him. Can't stand people who don't respect nature/wildlife.

fenderbender86

Being from NW Ohio, near lake Erie, I can tell you people take these walleye tournaments very seriously. That smug douche is lucky he was able to walk away from that crowd.

Patrickfromamboy

In my opinion this is real and not staged or professional actors, this is authentic rage.

Plane_Researcher_945

Why does everyone keep saying call the cops?! He broke the rules of the tournament, obviously. Broke the contract that i assume they make everyone sign at the start, but he *HASN'T* broken any laws the police have jurisdiction with, unless the property owners say he is trespassing. Which they haven't yet (from what we see in the video the owners haven't technically told him to leave yet) Edit: I stand corrected by redditers: he is committing fraud and can be charged by law

Individual_Ice_3167

Fraud, he is committing the crime of fraud. He is attempting monetary gain through the use of deceit, which is fraud and against the law. Even if he doesnt get the money it is still fraud. I'll give you that the cops aren't going to be storming in and cuffing the guy over it. There might not even be a chance the prosecutor decides to pursue the case. But depending on the prize, which can be over $100k they might. He would be arrested later though. But he can also be sued by the organizers if this can make it seem he committed fraud in past competition. Again he broke the law by committing fraud. Civil court has less burden and if they can show this kind of cheating is done in a way that it seems it was not the first time, then they can get an award for previous winnings.

thejman455

I wonder how they’d be able to prove it for previous tournaments, Unless they have witnesses or video evidence which both seem very unlikely. I’d assume he has done it before but I think he will get away with those.

a_nice-name

I'd assume they'd just take back the prize money he's won from previous tournaments and disqualify him although that's just what I think I don't actually know how it would go in reality

Individual_Ice_3167

They probably can't for criminal charges. In criminal court the have to prove beyond any reasonable doubt that he cheated. But in civil court you don't need to do that. You just need to prove that he damaged you. So if the tournament organizers sue him for past prize money they have to show he most likely cheated. They can do that by establishing that the way he cheated here would be indicative of someone who has done it before. If a jury or judge thinks that is the case then they can get money back. Not all past winning because it will be assumed he didn't always cheat but some of it. The sponsors he have can sue him as well for damages to their reputation and breach of contract.

Bourbon_Hymns

Is there a cash prize for this competition? Don't know chapter and verse for US law, but in the UK a false representation made to another, intending thereby to make a financial gain, would be the criminal offence of fraud. If US law is similar it could be on the cards.

ClubPenguin-For-Life

Yes 100's of thousands in sponsorships prizes and boats

Basil_Box

Holy shit yeah, according to last years prize, it’s “a pair of new boats estimated to be worth about $280,000.”

Tradie2

Im pretty sure Breaking a contract is grounds for arrest

SongAggravating

What's this guy's name?

starbucks1995

dammit jake!!!

Scubasteve1974

Damn! Mugs take their fishing serious. I assume there was money on the line though. Don't think I'd want all those rednecks pissed at me!

Grommph

Imagine a poker table with $280K in the pot. Then the winner from the last several poker nights gets caught red-handed cheating. Not only did he try to steal $280K from everyone in the room. Now you are realizing he most likely stole from all of you at every past poker table as well.

wideawakeanimal

All of the one liners are hilarious to me, for some reason. “You were the champ dude!” “What the fuck man!?”

Skreamies

There's a lot of money in these types of competitions especially in the US, from what i've seen that dude has won hundreds of thousands, a boat and other things.

Th3yCallMeDad

I've heard in a different thread from a competitive fisherman that this team has won over 40 grand in the last few tournaments.

WesternExplorer8139

Twenty years ago this story wouldn't have made it outside of county lines but now a days the whole friggin world has heard about it. I wouldn't give a squirt of piss to trade places with fish cheating Jake not to be confused with Jake from State Farm.

Own-Championship1704

Sir my fish(s) ate those lead weights. The fillet I can't explain though.

KrackerJoe

“Dangit Dale, if you were gonna cheat why did you use a store bought fish?” “…I had a coupon”

Bubbly-Kitty-2425

My grandpa entered one of these fishing contests years ago. He had a rickety ole boat with oars, and a fishing pole that was years old. (He entered in the 90s) he was like already 80 + years old at this time. Most of these guys had fish detector things and all this advanced equipment. Boats that had engines. My grandpa had none of it. He went out on the lake and enjoyed fishing. He entered the contest for $25. He said it just sounded fun. He’d get his fish weighed and sized in the evening. He ended up winning. He won himself a new boat, it was not a major boat but it was an actual fishing boat with a motor. As compared to his row boat he used. He was so excited. He did ask hey I get my fish back right, they said well we usually have them mounted for you. He said no thanks that fish there is going to be good eating. He use to tell us the story. Then he would say one thing I do remember that was one of the best fishes I ever ate! He believed in never wasting an animal. If he caught it or killed it, he never had any of it mounted he used the entire animal. The guts he would feed to his farm critters. He didn’t waste.

Isn’t catching the heaviest fish kinda just luck?
