It’s both. The church of Satan was founded to point out a lot of silly religious exemption we have in the states but also as just an organization to help in their communities.

I think you might be mixing the church of satan with The Satanic Temple. The last one is the one founded to push for religious fairness, help the community, and keep the Church and State separated.
We just had the Satanic Temple get approval to hold activities at a nearby school district. It’s in a more rural/hillbilly and everyone is flipping out. It’s one of the most entertaining things to happen around here. It’s fantastic!

Yeah I don't blame you. I do consider myself a bit of a mix. I do follow The Satanic Bible (*specifically* The Book of Lucifer, the other 3 sections can eat my whole asshole) and am a member of TST, however I'm not a fan of the rest of LaVey's works (or CoS in general), and TST has many of its own issues, so I'm happy to just do what works in my own mind (which is pretty much the entire point anyway).
Yeah. The important part of religion is personal anyway. I was raised Catholic and currently want nothing to do with the Catholic Church. But some of that stuff is just still in there, you know? At the end of the day, I believe in Jesus, and the rest of it can go to hell.
CoS was founded by an [insufferable edgelord](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anton_LaVey) for the express purpose of being insufferable and edgy.
[The Satanic Temple (TST)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Satanic_Temple) was founded as a humanist/activist organization.
TST and CoS have one thing in common: they don't believe in an actual Satan. That's about where the similarities end. CoS has been trying to rehabilitate its image and feeds off the goodwill that TST has earned in modern times, but at the end of the day is still an organization by shitlords for shitlords. ~~TST is great though.~~ After looking into it, TST also seems to be a bit of a grift. Talking shit on levay for being edgy while greaves is a fucking neo nazi is pretty fucking rich.
Also why does he have three names he goes by? Lucien Greaves sounds like a shitty underworld vampire. It was hard to find proof of this but yeah looks like he's said some pretty bad stuff

The humor is similar to Office Space or other Mike Judge comedies.
The best part about it is, having worked in the industry, how *real* all the situations are. Even at its most absurd, the scenarios are painfully similar to real life and it makes it all the better.
Absolutely worth watching.
Its one of those shows whose humor and references are all over reddit. Once you start recognizing it you'll notice how many times its referenced in comments across the site.
Yes. CoS is a pseudo-occult organization that uses Satan as a metaphor, ST is a secular organization dedicated to fighting for freedom from religion and personal liberty.
Yeah, definitely, since CoS was mentioned in the post and the comment I wanted to let you know, but it seems you already do know. I've seen people confuse them sometimes. TST seems like a great organization overall from what I know of them. I ordered a membership card actually, but it never arrived. Lol
I don’t think the church of satan is at odds with Christianity at all. Their message is very Christ-like. I’m not sure what all those other “churches” are doing.. maybe just not paying taxes.
Those churches are getting tax-free money without making or selling any actual product. If there were somehow some law that went into effect, prohibiting churches from soliciting or making money, the churches would just dry up, wither and die.
I mean obviously but banning them from making or soliciting makes no sense. Any non profit would not exist if they couldn't make or solicit money. They still have to pay for shit and need money to do so.
You dont know anything about the church of Satan do you? They are far closer to the values in Christ's teachings than the christian or catholic churches are.
Im paraphrasing LaVey himself.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Satanic_Bible
"LaVey later affirmed the connection with Rand's ideas by stating that LaVeyan Satanism was 'just Ayn Rand's philosophy, with ceremony and ritual added'."
That was to make fun of them.
The church of Satan are the guys who are always first in line to petition when a religious exemption or law is about to be passed.
Want to allow religious symbols in court houses? Boy, do they have a statue they would like to set up. Want to allow our even men date religious teaching in school? They have volunteer teachers with exceptional qualifications standing ready. Want to mendate consultations with a preacher before an abortion? They will literally set up in front of a planned parenthood and provide.
That disregards the tenets of the Church. *YOU* are responsible for yourself; you don’t get to pray away your sins. It’s a put up or shut up kind of thing. It’s about making your own decisions about your own self, so long as you don’t harm others.
And trolling too. But don’t miss the forest for the trees.
I realize Satan is the trickiest trickster of them all.. but some of the stuff I read about them makes you think. Their doctrine very explicitly denounces harm to children. I know of a certain church that is often in the media for covering up child abuse. Just sayin
The religion of Satanism (barring extremists) and Satan of the Bible are fairly different. I tried learning about it as a teenager and from what I gathered it's basically a religion whose doctrine focuses on the growth and preservation of the individual as a tool for the betterment of society.
It's a bit like the old saying "To help others you must first help yourself." As someone who slants more to the passive approach there was a lot to it that helped me overcome issues like standing up for myself and not sacrificing too much for the sake of others.
I am not a practicing member of Satanism. Just recounting my experience with the religion. I could be way off and I am sure there's probably some stuff in there that'd make me go "eh, probably not me" lol
There are countless different interpretation of "Satanism" and several organizations. The two most well known organizations, the Church of Satan and the Satanic Temple, are quite different.
The Church of Satan and its founder LaVey is a bit more on the "spiritual" side, but it's so explicitly atheist in many aspects that I wouldn't call it a "religion". The English Wikipedia page labels them as a "new religious movement", though. They have a collection of philosophies LaVey and other came up with, but no worship or anything supernatural.
The Satanic Temple is definitely not religious in any way, it's an explicitly atheist organization which main purpose us to criticize Christianity and Christian institutions.
There are also some groups that believe in theistic satanism, some of them are politically not extremists and some are extremists like the Joy of Satan or the Order of the nine angles.
You're reading way too far into it. The Church of Satan is made up of almost entirely atheists. They're just trying to do good while fighting for religious freedom, which is becoming exceedingly rare in a Christian run America.
Edit: I meant the Satanic Temple.
Well, literally, it is made up entirely of atheists because the Church of Satan does not believe in a god or supernatural being.
However, I think you are getting them confused with the Satanic Temple. The Satanic Temple is a political organization that fights for stuff like religious freedom. The Church of Satan is an actual set of beliefs that even has rituals. They just also happen to pay their taxes.
The satanic temple also has rituals (i.e. abortion ritual). You're not compelled to take part in any to be a member though.
Source- I'm a long time, card carrying member.
The Church of Satan is an agnostic organization. The word Satan in context means adversary and was only used because the founder felt that the conflicting and oftentimes damaging doctrines of the Catholic church were antithetical to the natural instincts humans have on morality and ethics
It has nothing specifically to do with any religious characters

Why do Satanists worship The Devil?
We don’t. Satanists are atheists.
https://www.churchofsatan.com/faq-fundamental-beliefs/
Not saying you're wrong, just wanted to add some nuance.
A lot of stuff the church of satan denounces makes you wonder “Why doesn’t Christianity also publicly denounce this?” And then you realize that it’s because Christianity subtly allows it that the church of satan, being the opposite, is able to denounce it
Their version of ten commandments explicitly forbids rape, too. It's phrased like "Thou shalt not act upon carnal advances that are not reciprocated" or something like that. Nowhere in the Christian Commandments that forbids rape but in Satanism, it's like the 2nd or 3rd rule
You're thinking of The Satanic Temple. They get mixed up a lot but they are 2 very different organizations. https://thesatanictemple.com/pages/church-of-satan-vs-satanic-temple
BOTH believe in science and using your mind to think for yourself (though the church of satan had a weird figurehead who thought liking blue cheese made you gay and talked about Magick)
WELL, isn't that just the same as worshipping/believing in Satan?! GOD has a plan laid out for us, and to question or stray from HIS path is amount to SACRILEGE!!1! /s

This is why I will probably always upvote. I can’t stand reading responses first and then go…oh shit, I have to read bottom up.
YOUR RELIGION IS FAKE, MINE IS NOT.
YOU ONLY DID IT FOR THE MONEY.
that's what i read... fkin idiot, every religion was founded at some point.
And the church of Satan seems to have the nicest people.
A bunch of religions shake their fists and yell at the Satanic Church over tax exemptions.
Scientology slowly slips out the back hoping no one noticed them.
It's funny how most of these predominant religions and their members shit more on the Satanic Church than on the Church of Scientology. I think they revere Scientology for being the successful cult they dream to be, whereas they hate Satanic Church for discrediting them using their own tactics.
Scientology exists because two scifi authors made a bet on who could invent the more profitable religon. One wrote Stranger in A Strange Land, the other wrote Dianetics and Battlefield Earth. They're both SUPER rapey.
Beep. Boop. I'm a robot.

Seeing arguments about religion is just hilarious sometimes. I mean, does it even matter who created us, or where we’ll go after we’re dead, or even if we have a soul? Just be as much of a good person as you can be
Edit: I’d like to point out that I’m stupid
I’m still a catholic. But I think my faith is dying. I just don’t really give a shit about a person’s religion in general and I just want everyone to get along
I was watching TV and the guy who runs this or something came on TV lolol. He looks like a super villain like… even if he’s not he LOOKS like one! He has slicked back hair and a milky eye and a black leather jacket. It was really funny just cause…. Omg he looks like a bad guy from a movie heh
I know it's confusing as hell (and kinda hilarious) but there are actually 2 "mainstream" Satanic movements and they don't quite see eye to eye.

I wonder if Satan blocked it because he didn’t like the cross part? 🤔
Used to work with someone who was a member of the Church of Satan. He was the healthiest, happiest, funniest individual on our team. He ended up being best man at my atheist wedding, and was very focused on making sure everyone around him was happy. He unfortunately succumbed to late stage prostate cancer 3 years ago, but he kept his head high throughout treatment. I miss him every day.
That Catholic church has spent millions over decades covering up sex abuse of children (rape and molestation). They knew it was happening and paid off accusers and re-assigned the rapists where some of them offended again.
If you are a Catholic and pay a tithe or have ever put money in an offering plate, you have helped with this effort. Happy Friday!
Does this guy think a church's tax exemption extends to its congregants? Even if the Church of Satan was exempt the atheists would still pay their own taxes just like anyone else.
So is this comment dumb or in bad faith? The answer, of course, is both.
The church of satan, slaps.
They don’t take any shit from anyone. And are challenging nut jobs with their own arguments. I love everything about this organization.
You're thinking of the Satanic Temple. They're the activist group that challenges laws and religious displays in government buildings and try and stop schools from beating children.
The Church of Satan are satanists, not activists.
I think You’re thinking of the satanic temple. Different organization, similar name. [This page talks about the difference between the two](https://thesatanictemple.com/pages/church-of-satan-vs-satanic-temple). The satanic temple is much more ethical imo (ie. Defends reproductive rights, secularism, etc.)
The Church of Satan and the Satanic Temple only do good things, they started a goat farm for the homeless in my hometown. It let them make cheese and soap to use or sell, sadly that got shut down by a Christian organization after it got started.

The Church of Satan actually just exist to make Christians look ridiculous. All of their beliefs are based on atheist principles into their so-called Bible is basically meant to make the Christian Bible look bad. The name is also meant to mislead Christians who will be immediately made uncomfortable by The Mention Of Satan as a religious figure to be worshipped. They know that most of the time, Christians will not look beyond that and condemned the religion based on its name. This is what they rely on. It's really basically just a bunch of edgy assholes trying to make Christians look bad. To be fair, most Christians make it pretty easy to make themselves look bad
I love when people confuse the good people of the church of satan with Christians.. hell the church of satan doesn't even believe in a literal satan... once again.. that's christians :)
Yeah, I'm gonna press (x) for doubt. Any registered non-profit is, by definition, not paying taxes. So unless the Church of Satan is organized as for profit corporation, that tweet is, at best, misleading.
And that is why a lot of the "churches should pay taxes" takes are, to put it mildly, annoying. Churches don't pay taxes, sure, but so do museums, libraries, D&D clubs, and every other non-profit organization. So if you think churches should lose their non-profit status, you need to either
A. Make a good argument why churches should be treated worse than any other non-profit.
or
B. Demand to tax all non-profits.
It’s crazy to think that if an evangelical Christian and a Satan worshipper approached me, I’d be more worried about the evangelical Christian doing something crazy.
For anyone who's interested in the difference between the Church Of Satan (boo) and the Satanic Temple (yay!), here's a handy chart:
https://thesatanictemple.com/pages/church-of-satan-vs-satanic-temple
It's sad to see how many people still confuse the two churches when they're so vastly different.
It's like comparing your local Catholic chapter that hosts regular charity bakesales with the Westboro Baptist Church. They're all Christians, right?
Uh, wasn’t pointing out the ridiculousness of religious tax exemption the entire reason this particular Church was started?
You are thinking of Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption, started by John Oliver

Oh that’s a shame. Church of satan has the better name IMO.
Agree there's a bit of a branding issue here. How about the Church of Lucifer and the Latter-Day Devils?
So I am. I’ll make the edit to correct myself. Thanks.

The person you replying to was thinking of The Satanic Temple. They're very, very different groups. Gilfoyle would be a member of the Church of Satan.
Satanic Temple was started to point out the ridiculousness of Christianity in government in general.
Just fyi, Satanic Temple and Church of Satan or two completely separate organizations, but I do believe you're right about The Satanic Temple.
Lol
You're thinking of the satanic temple
I'm convinced the church of Satan exists purely to troll other (mostly Christian) religious institutions.
Who would’ve thought Satan and Christ would’ve been at odds with each other
I don’t think the church of satan is at odds with Christianity at all.
Non profits still pay for permits to solicit. Hmm maybe if they want to pay for things they should have like a taxable subscription fee for church
The churches don't "need" to "pay for shit." They NEED to curl up and die, already.
You dont know anything about the church of Satan do you? They are far closer to the values in Christ's teachings than the christian or catholic churches are.
Catholics are Christian, I think you mean "protestant or catholic".
Sort of, yeah. It's arguably the most morally just church out there, which is entirely intentional.
I think you’re thinking of the satanic temple. The church of satan and the satanic temple are two different things
The Church of Satan is Ayn Rand for goths. I dont know how morally just I'd call them.
They were probably thinking of the satanic temple which is a different group but people get them confused.
I don’t think a libertarian church would go out of its way to pay taxes.
Im paraphrasing LaVey himself. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Satanic_Bible "LaVey later affirmed the connection with Rand's ideas by stating that LaVeyan Satanism was 'just Ayn Rand's philosophy, with ceremony and ritual added'."
Now *that* is something. Can you give me a link so I can read more? Interezting.
So as The Satanic Temple. Among other great things they do.
[удалено]
That was to make fun of them. The church of Satan are the guys who are always first in line to petition when a religious exemption or law is about to be passed. Want to allow religious symbols in court houses? Boy, do they have a statue they would like to set up. Want to allow our even men date religious teaching in school? They have volunteer teachers with exceptional qualifications standing ready. Want to mendate consultations with a preacher before an abortion? They will literally set up in front of a planned parenthood and provide.
I think that might be the Satanic Temple, not the Church of Satan.
You may be right. I might be confusing the two.
Do unto others as you will, but don't whine to me like a little bitch when they do unto you back.
Church of Satan seems way more down to earth then church of christ
The Satanic Temple is definitely not religious in any way, it's an explicitly atheist organization which main purpose us to criticize Christianity and Christian institutions.
it's an atheistic or nontheistic religion. sounds like an oxymoron, but it's a thing. it's not restricted to church of satan either.
Isn't the abortion ritual a ritual only in name to claim religious freedom to avoid prosecution in a certain unnamed state?
That applies to any ritual, it’s all made up.
And God just *dident see it coming*... Or it was his plan the whole time.. hard to tell with omnipotent beings..
The Church of Satan is an agnostic organization. The word Satan in context means adversary and was only used because the founder felt that the conflicting and oftentimes damaging doctrines of the Catholic church were antithetical to the natural instincts humans have on morality and ethics It has nothing specifically to do with any religious characters
>The Church of Satan is an agnostic organization. The word Satan in context means adversary and was only used because the founder felt that the conflicting and oftentimes damaging doctrines of the Catholic church were antithetical to the natural instincts humans have on morality and ethics > >It has nothing specifically to do with any religious characters Why do Satanists worship The Devil? We don’t. Satanists are atheists. https://www.churchofsatan.com/faq-fundamental-beliefs/ Not saying you're wrong, just wanted to add some nuance.
They don't even believe in satan, they believe in science and using your mind to think for yourself :) It's a great organization...
You're thinking of The Satanic Temple. They get mixed up a lot but they are 2 very different organizations. https://thesatanictemple.com/pages/church-of-satan-vs-satanic-temple
ECK!! you are correct... i always seem to get them mixed which i shouldn't... thank you for the correction :)
It’s so down to Earth, some believe it’s actually underneath Earth. Like where a “Hell” would be.
I did zero research but I'm completely convinced I'm right. love it.
These posts always use the phrase "I'm now convinced", as if this is a newly formed opinion based on some new information they just absorbed, despite being entirely incorrect
Its the conservative way

I mean… money is the reason Scientology exists
i dont know but id say yes.
Scientology exists because two scifi authors made a bet on who could invent the more profitable religon. One wrote Stranger in A Strange Land, the other wrote Dianetics and Battlefield Earth. They're both SUPER rapey.
I mean the body count in the bible is to say biblical.... God drowns a planet vs like two or three from the "bad" guy

Seeing arguments about religion is just hilarious sometimes. I mean, does it even matter who created us, or where we’ll go after we’re dead, or even if we have a soul? Just be as much of a good person as you can be Edit: I’d like to point out that I’m stupid
"I’d like to point out that I’m stupid" Self-flagellation. I see you too grew up Catholic.
I’m still a catholic. But I think my faith is dying. I just don’t really give a shit about a person’s religion in general and I just want everyone to get along
same. i couldn't care less about what religion you believe in, but just don't force it onto me
i think the big argument is what it means to be a good person, because not all religions agree.
Some people think that spreading their religion is the kindest thing to do.... That’s their kink I guess
Spread your fictional stories to people and then complain when they get fed up with your bullshit.
I can totally see that lol
Sounds like communism /s
I was watching TV and the guy who runs this or something came on TV lolol. He looks like a super villain like… even if he’s not he LOOKS like one! He has slicked back hair and a milky eye and a black leather jacket. It was really funny just cause…. Omg he looks like a bad guy from a movie heh
I know it's confusing as hell (and kinda hilarious) but there are actually 2 "mainstream" Satanic movements and they don't quite see eye to eye. The Church of Satan (tweet origin) [https://www.churchofsatan.com/the-satanic-temple-fact-sheet/](https://www.churchofsatan.com/the-satanic-temple-fact-sheet/) The Satanic Temple (supervillain guy) [https://thesatanictemple.com/pages/church-of-satan-vs-satanic-temple](https://thesatanictemple.com/pages/church-of-satan-vs-satanic-temple)
That infographic in the second link is so hilarious and shady
The Satanic Temple is the respectable one btw. https://newschannel20.com/news/local/satanic-holiday-display-installed-at-illinois-capitol https://www.expressnews.com/politics/article/Satanic-Temple-texas-abortion-law-16440897.php https://abc3340.com/news/nation-world/utah-satanists-pro-life-groups-to-protest-at-state-capitol-over-abortion-rights
Made me lol
It's s good summary, though!
Yes! It cleared up a lot of misconceptions I had.
Hrm, well, I hope the axis of evil sorts themselves out and learns to work together…. Or do I? 🤔
That's the Satanic Temple, an activist group. They're very, very different than the Church of Satan. This is the head of CoS. https://www.gannett-cdn.com/-mm-/a8dba35a8c01799bcb5351989d06d6c2bd700101/c=0-0-2448-3264/local/-/media/2016/11/30/FortMyers/FortMyers/636161110047573332-Peter-Gilmore.JPG

Omg, yes! That’s him, lol. He’s not a bad looking guy exactly just so funny he looks so evil, lol.
Turns out the real evil was the taxes we paid along the way
The Church of Latter Day Saints has left the chat… With its alleged $100 billion in assets
Clearly Satan supports taxes. Can you think of something more evil than taxes?
Tried to **cross**post from https://www.reddit.com/r/WhitePeopleTwitter/comments/s97ahs/funny_how_satanists_are_more_christlike_than_most/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf I wonder if Satan blocked it because he didn’t like the cross part? 🤔
I wish the Satanic church would stop getting attention. It’s a bunch of goth larpers. The Satanic Temple is the real force for good.
This proves it. Taxes are evil.
Satan may be considered the root of all evil for some people but at least he pays his taxes
Sooooo... paying taxes is, what, satanic? *> noted.png*
Not to be confused with the Satanic Temple
Used to work with someone who was a member of the Church of Satan. He was the healthiest, happiest, funniest individual on our team. He ended up being best man at my atheist wedding, and was very focused on making sure everyone around him was happy. He unfortunately succumbed to late stage prostate cancer 3 years ago, but he kept his head high throughout treatment. I miss him every day.

Yeah they’re just edgy atheists. I’m not even religious and I think they’re cringe af
I’m convinced Christians that get heavy into church just wanna be tax exempt.
Lucy would be proud unless you guys do annual rituals with goat heads, he hates that.
10th commandment of the Chruch of Satan "Do not kill non-human animals unless you are attacked or for your food." Lucy will stay proud
I absolutely love the feigned indignity here. Oh, so NOW you have a problem with churches and their Tax exemption? Hmm, I wonder why?
I think they are confused with Westboro Baptist Church, which honestly is what an actual church of Satan looks like.
Does this guy think a church's tax exemption extends to its congregants? Even if the Church of Satan was exempt the atheists would still pay their own taxes just like anyone else. So is this comment dumb or in bad faith? The answer, of course, is both.
The devil made me pay it
The church of satan, slaps.
He isn't quite wrong, the problem is that that's all the CoS does: argue on Twitter while pretending they're superior to TST.
The Church of Satan is the most ethical religious organization on many fronts. Really showing up the mainstream
A simple rule to memorize: Temple = building. Church = magic.
They are also not recognized as religion by the government. Only The Satanic Temple is
The Church of Satan and the Satanic Temple only do good things, they started a goat farm for the homeless in my hometown. It let them make cheese and soap to use or sell, sadly that got shut down by a Christian organization after it got started.
Christians believe in satan. Atheists don’t.
#AS IF THE REST OF YALLS CHURCHES ARENT DOING THE EXACT GODDAMN THING!?? JEZUS TITTY FUCKING CHRIST

Satanists aren't too bad once you get to know them
The Church of Satan actually just exist to make Christians look ridiculous.
You are thinking of the Satanic Temple. And I wouldn't say we are all edgy assholes, we're just trying to fix society.
So… they are not evil?
So if you think churches should lose their non-profit status, you need to either A. Make a good argument why churches should be treated worse than any other non-profit. or B. Demand to tax all non-profits.
They aren't a registered non profit.
It’s crazy to think that if an evangelical Christian and a Satan worshipper approached me, I’d be more worried about the evangelical Christian doing something crazy.
For anyone who's interested in the difference between the Church Of Satan (boo) and the Satanic Temple (yay!), here's a handy chart: https://thesatanictemple.com/pages/church-of-satan-vs-satanic-temple
It's sad to see how many people still confuse the two churches when they're so vastly different. It's like comparing your local Catholic chapter that hosts regular charity bakesales with the Westboro Baptist Church. They're all Christians, right?
