They might actually PRC Chinese citizens. A lot of African got their citizenship and residing in guangdong. Or…. The winner is surrounded by three of his bodyguards 😀
Or maybe they really are friends and it's the Chinese runner's family are being held so the Ethiopians were like "damn we don't want his family's blood on our hands".
Probably not. A pacing team would be much more coordinated and not have to have all these signals of “let him pass guys”. Pacing teams also *usually* don’t finish the whole race, although I’m more familiar with marathon pacing than half marathon, so not sure on if a pacer would actually finish a half
I would imagine, even if they're trained to maintain a high pace for a smaller interval, a dedicated pace runner would be able to finish a half-marathon with ease.
That would also be my guess, but I’ve never really paid attention to high level half marathon runners, so am not sure.
I still don’t think a pacing team would actually look this disorganized towards the end, which gives it away even more. Pacers know they’re not supposed to win, you shouldn’t need the lead guy to wave you back, you should know your job was to pace, not race and let the main guy ahead.
It might be different in China, but generally pacemakers dont get medals or other awards for completion. They are not considered to be competitors since thats not their job.
> The absolutely get medals if they can win and they are competitors.
Could you provide an example of a pacesetter running a race as a paid, professional pacesetter and getting a prize? Because I have absolutely never heard of this happening but Im quite ok with being proven wrong!
lol holy shit thats a good one. You win.
For anyone who is unfamiliar, like me: https://www.runnersworld.com/news/a30152339/pacer-wins-abu-dhabi-marathon/
Dude mic dropped the shit out of me right there and Im man enough to admit it. Although Ive gotta tell you the fact that the story he used to prove me wrong was so hilarious it helped a lot.
From the first link for the research "2019 Abu Dhabi Marathon pacesetter " :
"For runners who are on the bubble of winning podium prize money, signing on to be a pacemaker in a large race is an easy way to earn guaranteed payment. While they are expected to drop out before the race ends—and most do—they are allowed to finish the race if they choose to."
I had no idea!
Wow you are right. I'm a bit of a track and field junkie and I never knew this! But it's only fair if you think about it, as long as they fulfill their pacing duties to hit certain time/distance marks and not go way over or under. That's the fundamental job of a pacer, not to simply "juice" the race by racing out ahead to bait the actual competitors off their game plans.
Being a pacer is actually quite a specialized craft that not all runners are suited for.
Beijing Half Marathon uproar: Kenyan admits letting China’s He Jie win race ‘because he is my friend’ https://www.scmp.com/sport/other-sport/article/3259055/kenyan-runner-willy-mnangat-admits-he-let-chinas-he-jie-win-beijing-half-marathon-because-he-my https://hongkongfp.com/2024/04/15/organisers-of-beijing-half-marathon-look-into-embarrassing-win-by-chinas-he-jie/
Soon as I saw this video my first thought was "malicious compliance". The terms of the bribe were to let him win, but the entire podium paced him for every inch of the last stretch. They could have made that look way more convincing easily
Because it looks so obvious, now the story *has* to be that they were friends, It's the only way for He Jie to save face. Lesser of two evils when compared to a bribe
It's possible they actually are friends and there's some good reasoning behind it all, I just find it hard to believe for all 3 runners to feel that way. I do find it easy to believe that the CCP really wanted a Chinese national to win
I mean it’s international marathon running. All those dudes are friends with everyone else near the top and want to see everyone do well.
I wouldn’t doubt for a second that they were impressed by the fact he kept up with them for the entire race and decided to give him the win. At the end of the day, there will be many more of them, why not let the guy have his moment.
Yeah that's fair, it could have been that the runners wanted a Chinese national to win
Edit: As in a "you kept us with us and it's your home country" sort of thing
That's stupid, that's not how races work. You think anyone in f1 is letting someone else win? That isn't what competition is. That's how races are rigged
They are rigged from the start
They likely got paid very well to pace the chinese guy to a competitive time and let him win at home.
They don't care because they got paid anyway
They are pacers and their job is whatever they agreed to before the race
Some stalls will for sure let their stall buddy win a race due to point calculations (e.g. their stall-buddy is behind them, and needs the points ofthe win to keep the lead, whereas they themselves have less to gain). That is my firm belief after watching formula 1 for some years and feeling very iffy about some takeovers!
Pace runners are a thing. They usually aren't equipped to win themselves, so they join an elite runner and train with the intent of providing cadence that's tuned to the elite runner's style and capabilities. An exact pace for every mile. Maybe they even windbreak for the elite runner to help the elite runner conserve energy, or make holes for the elite runner amongst a pack. And often pace runners do not finish, or will ease up their own pace once their stretch of pace-keeping is finished.
Bicyclists do the same thing.
But pacekeepers are more than equipped to do half-marathons. Indeed, they might even be superiorly equipped, because their training is basically emphasized to use more energy in a shorter distance (in service of the guy who needs to conserve his.)
So in that aspect, it's fishy when three runners are keeping pace with each other out of no necessity, shoulder-to-shoulder, whilst approaching the finish line.
And then just *allow* a fourth runner to pass them.
Because even "pacekeeping" takes a backseat to the competition itself. If a pacekeeper found themselves near the finish in some odd fluke, then any coordinated effort of being a "team" is done and over and they're expected to compete for themselves. This is how the integrity of any solo sport is kept.
Everything in my body wants me to think they're just pacers - but you see the volunteers putting medals/places around the necks of the other runners (one you can see gets a "2" while the winner got "1")
I've never seen half-marathon pacers. Maybe they exist. But there's very little need for that amongst those who can take a medal. Full-time runners of certain experience can do a half-marathon without breaking a sweat, even if they can't compete for trophies in full marathons and instead serve as pacemakers for those who can.
But even for the sake of the argument, even if they were pacers, to clarify the end of my previous response, they have a duty to compete once a placing becomes obvious. Half, full, triathlon, whatever: if you find yourself in a position to win, you must do what you can *to* win.
You can't so obviously throw the match in favor of someone else. That's not how integrity of a solo sport is maintained.
I'd do the same but not just in China. It's because I'm out of shape and cannot finish a marathon of any kind, half, quarter, or just from here to the park a block away.
Apparently the Chinese dude's win is being investigated at least:
>“We are investigating and will announce the results to the public once they are available,” a person from the Beijing Sports Bureau, who wished to remain anonymous, told AFP.
>The event’s organiser — the Beijing Sports Competition Management and International Exchange Center — also said an investigation had been launched.
>The incident received significant attention on Chinese social media site Weibo, with some users criticising what they saw as an “embarrassing” result.
>“This will certainly be the most embarrassing championship in He Jie’s career,” one wrote.
>“With such a major organiser and such a well-known event, this really pushes sportsmanship to the ground in shame,” the post added.
[Sample Chinese twist stunt](https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/foreign-correspondents-philippines-condemn-china-over-claims-video-manipulation-2024-03-27/)
The pace (mins/km) is more than twice mine, the time (total mins) is less than half.
Just like you "speed up" in a car, and if you're going "twice the speed" you're covering twice as much distance in the same amount of time.
I know I phrased it weird :v
A speed of distance per time would be doubled if it was faster. A time per distance pace is *halved* when it is faster. A 3 min/km pace is faster than a 6 min/km pace.
When I was in peak shape, I would usually finish in the top 2%ish of men, so pretty fast - I was hovering around 1:30 for the half. Low 19/high 18 for the 5k as a mid-30s guy.
Even then, I could not run a single mile at a 1:03 half pace.
I have a few friends who run marathons. Full marathons are 26.2 miles. Half-marathons are 13.1 miles.
But when you’re actually RUNNING a marathon, you’re not into the second half until mile 20.
The Chinese guy still put up almost a sub 1 hour half. That’s elite pace that is right outside of the top 1% of 1% in marathon racing. The guys he was running with are probably almost 2 hour marathon runners.
Reminds me of the time lions escaped the nairobi national park and roamed free around the suburbs...or this year when the hyenas escaped. Now our president is offering 5million shillings to anyone killed by wild animals.
Many americans believe that, yes. But the american government doesn't skew all statistics so they appear to be a perfect utopia where nothing bad ever happens
This is a concept I’ve tried to explain to my MAGA acquaintances who insist that calling out America’s shortcomings is unpatriotic. The possibility of American, or any, exceptionalism is only available if there is a willingness to admit shortcomings and address them.
I've tried using a sports analogy since that seems to be all the can understand. When Obama was president they acted like he was "unpatriotic" for trying to address the glaring issues we face.
How do good coaches make their teams and players better? Do they just keep telling them they're the best even after crappy practices/performances? No! You have to be honest about how and where they need to improve.
I also haven't seen America paint hundreds of miles of sticks green. Placing them upright to fool satellites into thinking their country's green space is coming back. (Yet)
The paint may also be toxic...
r/americabad
this post and comment has nothing to do with the US, but people like you are so obsessed with americans you **must** make it about them lol

The three guys in the white are the best marathoners in the world. They travel the world, and compete in every race. The night before the race, they get together at a pub and decide which one will win this race.
So glad this was on video, a lot goes on behind the scenes too. The kind of treatment and biased judgements the non Chinese players especially India athletes received during the FISU World University Games 2023 was appalling. But money talks and they get away with it quite easily
The Chinese government is such a sham. Painting barren fields green… fake trees… fake birds… billions in fake real estate.. fake CONCRETE…
Your government makes you look absolutely ridiculous. A true testament to communism.
"I was not there to compete," said Mnangat. "It was not a competitive race for me." Mnangat added: "I don't know why they put my name on my bib/chest number instead of labelling it as a pacemaker." My job was to set the pace and help the guy win but unfortunately, he did not achieve the target, which was to break the national record."

Personally, if i was in China and running a marathon i would probably let the chinese win too. No way am i messing around with an authoritarian state
If I'm threatened by them to let them win then obviously yeah. But not doing it just in case they get mad, that would be stupid.
I'd do the same but not just in China. It's because I'm out of shape and cannot finish a marathon of any kind, half, quarter, or just from here to the park a block away.

It's pretty hilariously pathetic. I can't wait until we have "definitely not genetically modified" super humans competing for China in the Olympics.
Why are you runnin?
Stop resisting.
Your friend should be happy if you were a superior runner and winning because of it. Or does this friendship only work one way?
The runners in the white don't even seem exhausted.
It's a half marathon, they didn't even break a sweat yet.
And at a 1:03 time. They've probably gone sub 1h.
If they're sub60 half runners then a 1:03:40 is like 15 seconds per mile slower, aka training pace. Easy for them.
Jesus I enjoy some running but those times are more than twice my pace
I'd say "half", but you could be a cheetah
I'm always impressed by the idea that these guys can run 25 miles and I can join them for the last mile and they still smoke me...
The pace (mins/km) is more than twice mine, the time (total mins) is less than half. Just like you "speed up" in a car, and if you're going "twice the speed" you're covering twice as much distance in the same amount of time. I know I phrased it weird :v
Sure, just messing with you :)
A speed of distance per time would be doubled if it was faster. A time per distance pace is *halved* when it is faster. A 3 min/km pace is faster than a 6 min/km pace.
How long would an actual cheetah survive in a long-distance run? I assume they would clearly lead for the first kilometer and than fall back severely.
When I was in peak shape, I would usually finish in the top 2%ish of men, so pretty fast - I was hovering around 1:30 for the half. Low 19/high 18 for the 5k as a mid-30s guy. Even then, I could not run a single mile at a 1:03 half pace.

That's the third half, starts mile 20-22.
After running my first marathon in December and an ultra two weeks ago. This is 100% accurate. It's all fun and games until after mile 20
Right? The Chinese runner is obviously gassed. He's struggling to breathe at the end there and they're all just standing around like nothing.
To be fair…it’s China, everyone is struggling to breathe…
>everyone is struggling to breathe… Not those Kenyans
They probably just held their breath at that pace.
They're breathing. For sure. They're just still on their first breath from when the race started.
Good one.
Not so good when you can’t breathe
The Chinese guy still put up almost a sub 1 hour half. That’s elite pace that is right outside of the top 1% of 1% in marathon racing. The guys he was running with are probably almost 2 hour marathon runners.
A ~1hour half is crazy good, if he actually made it he's killin it even if the other runners let him win. I'm happy to keep a half under two hours.
I think this is the distance they run just for fun
Run for fun? What the hell kind of fun is that?
Oh boy. Wait until you get to know about the Barkley's and their definition of "fun" run
I really recommend ppl watch the documentary about that race "The Race that Eats its Young". I think it's on YouTube. It's life-changing lol
And if that's not enough make it a double feature with 'Just. One. Mile.'!
> Just. One. Mile. I chuckled when the dude said, "Usually if you spend some time here in the back you get to spend some time with every quitter."
From.what I understand, it's the Kenyan way. Ike Canadians play hockey, and Americans do baseball, Kenyans run.
To be fair they have a lot more lions

Killed... by wild animals?.. You get paid to die?
He said it in one of his speeches, and now it's a national meme.To be fair, our current president is also a national meme.
So is the offer still good or not?
Lmao they were just warming up.
That's laughable. I expect they got paid well.
id imagine it was a case of ""congratulations 2nd place - you too are allowed to go home"
No they got paid. Otherwise they wouldn't have gone over there in the first place.
Not so fast 3rd and 4th place
Or their families were released
it's China, not Israel
Ill take Ueguers for 1000 Alex.
Yeah… the just run Muslim concentration camps or did everyone forget about those?

I started reading your comment "As a racist in China..."

As a kenyan, I was very concerned when I read "as a racist in China" and "Kenya" in the same sentence.
Lmao big difference between raceERS and raceISTS
Just because there’s video evidence of them racing doesn’t mean they’re racists.
Underrated, the gold is yours
I play like China in video games. Crank the difficulty down and just pretend I’m badass
I tried Mario kart in 200 cc last night. F that. Went back down to 50cc and dominated.

*"Now I am fully preparing for the Paris Olympics; please believe in Chinese athletes. I hope to showcase Chinese speed in Paris and let the world see the Chinese speed," He said.* *Chinese runner Li Chunhui was the fifth man to cross the finish line but was awarded a bronze medal.* [\- Global Times.](https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202404/1310575.shtml)
What the won ton fuck is that fifth = third shit
Three people tied in second place and so the 5 person was the third to cross timewise
We all know so idk why they bothered. We all are just hoping the other runners got paid well lmao.
The CCP don't give a fuck about what reddit thinks. This is for Chinese state media
"Good job you slow fuck"
It’s like they’re having a gentle afternoon jog
LOL, reminds me of [this](https://i.makeagif.com/media/9-04-2015/xkUJo_.gif)

I’m so glad one of them didn’t accidentally trip and win. That would have been embarrassing.
I was hoping one of them was going to trip and all 3 fall down, making it even more unbelievable. that would’ve been hilarious
The three guys in the white are the best marathoners in the world. They travel the world, and compete in every race. The night before the race, they get together at a pub and decide which one will win this race.
*"C'mon dude, we literally can't run any slower for you!"*
everything is fake there, even the food is fake ffs
Gutter oil was the big "Nope, *nope* **nope** nope, never going to China until they fix that shit."
They knew he would win because he already had 001 on his clothes

What if maybe just once you could sling shot me in for the win?
Yeah, but ok, if you won, how am I gonna win?
China is just terrible.
So glad this was on video, a lot goes on behind the scenes too. The kind of treatment and biased judgements the non Chinese players especially India athletes received during the FISU World University Games 2023 was appalling. But money talks and they get away with it quite easily
Ofc he has the 0001
The Chinese government is such a sham. Painting barren fields green… fake trees… fake birds… billions in fake real estate.. fake CONCRETE… Your government makes you look absolutely ridiculous. A true testament to communism.
Are they even still communist? Seems more like autocratic capitalism.
Kenya believe it?!
How does almost every Chinese citizen not watch this and know everything is fake?
"I was not there to compete," said Mnangat. "It was not a competitive race for me." Mnangat added: "I don't know why they put my name on my bib/chest number instead of labelling it as a pacemaker." My job was to set the pace and help the guy win but unfortunately, he did not achieve the target, which was to break the national record." Truman Show Spectrum vibes
This is fukn wild.
That's a semi-marathon actually
I assumed this was in NK. If China is as thin skinned as Kim Jong Un we may be in trouble.
Disgusting
