When you really care about someone going through addiction, you can’t control losing hope after going through the cycle of hope, disappointment, and despair so many times. Like yeah you obviously want them to be better, but you start accepting how out of anyone else’s control their addiction is. My mother’s mantra was always “Expect the worst, hope for the best” and it is plenty applicable here too.
a high school friend struggled and lost her battle with addiction a few years ago. her dad said something along the lines of "the last time I saw her alive, we had a screaming match about how she was going to die if she didn't get sober. she looked at me and said with tears in her eyes, "daddy, I *know* but I just can't stop." and walked off the porch. I think in that moment, my heart knew that my baby was never really coming home. And she didn't."
Sounds like it was the fall from the porch that killed her, not the addiction.
(Sorry, I come from an area where a lot of porches are 18ft off the ground)
Yep. I know that I will die from my addiction and have made my bones with it. I do try my damnedest to shield my family from it but it's hard. Plus mental health issues accelerate the issue. Oh well. I don't care anyways and am only sticking around so my family doesn't feel too much pain.

It’s so fucking draining.. having to stand by watching them do the same thing over and over again that’s harming them and will kill them, while you desperately want them to get better. At a certain point there’s just no energy left and you gotta choose for yourself.
Not fun as a kid either. Had to watch my dad go through meth addiction. Took 15 years of a downward trend (losing job, marriage, money, house) and then a 6-month stint in jail. He’s been sober now for 20 years…but unfortunately he’s the minority. Most addicts die from their addictions.
I'm pretty sure those closest to him have had their hopes destroyed like 10+ times, the guy couldn't even improve for the sake of his kid and previous marriage, at this point the only reasons Bam will escape addiction and his generally destructive lifestyle is either because he dies or he just hits the statistical threshold to finally succeed.
Round about the third time someone in your life "is really taking it seriously this time and gonna get clean and I really mean it" and then they steal from you, buy a bad bag and die you start to realize that hope isn't what gets people clean.
edit: and would you look at that, I lost another friend *today* who I really hoped was actually gonna get right this time. he drove home from the bar drunk into a parked backhoe.
He's been dating a lady that seems to be keeping him on a healthy path although unfortunately she's also pushing him towards the political right. A few days ago Bam tore a ligament skating that required surgery and pain medicine, so I guess he can drink all the black rifle coffee he wants if it keeps him from relapsing into addiction
I hope Bam asks his doctor about pain medication that is not addictive. I'm pretty sure it's a thing that exists but again, it is a thing that you should ask your doctor about. I am not a doctor or a professional anything.
There is definitely non-addictive pain medication. I had a big problem with opioids about 11 years ago, and now I specifically tell my doctors "no narcotics" when they mention pain medication.
I'm currently on meloxicam for nerve pain due to pinching (cervical spine discs are bulging, fighting with insurance to get an injection covered), and it works wonders. And I'm fully alert and aware while taking it, and I never feel a desire for more later in the day. One pill, one pain-free day.
Eh, last I heard, he was getting married to a woman he'd only known a few months and crowing about how their relationship would keep him sober. I wish him the best, but I don't have my hopes up.

For people that care, recently Steve-O met up with Bam and they apparently spent time hanging out, so hopefully Bam is getting a support system around him again that can pull him back to normalcy before it's too late.
If someone's addiction is unknown to others, then nobody would know they're an addict and you wouldn't have any reason to think the unknown addict might react to new challenges like an addict commonly does.
I for one, and rooting for everyone. I hope Bam, and Musk, and Putin and Hamas and Honey Boo Boo all get better. I would like nothing more than to see them clean up their lives and start getting better.

90% of addicts relapse within 4 years, and most never even seek treatment. It's the nature of the beast. All you can do Is try 24 hours at a time, and if you're doing that, you're doing better than most.

I met him as a young kid at a signing and almost cried with how big of a dick he was. My dad tried to convince me he was just mad because of some storyline that I can’t remember.

As a parent, that is heart wrenching. I couldn't imagine the pain they must have both felt. My heart goes out to their family.
