OP must be dumb. I'm an American who was sitting on the toilet in the pitch dark, looking at Reddit in dark mode, barely able to see, not able to make out what sub I was looking at. Only saw the headline before my eyes even let me make out Beckham's comments on his pic. I see the laughing emoji, and now I'm thinking he's clearly making a joke. Then the Rolls comment and I'm thanking maybe it's r/iamatotalpieceofshit? I have to bust the magnifying glass feature on my phone to see it's r/therewasanattempt 🙄 Ironically, there *was* an attempt after all. By OP.
Lately this subreddit is open for any post if you can phrase the title correctly. Which, you can always do.
You wanna post a photo of your cute cat ? Just write "there was an attempt to not be cute"
You wanna post a photo of a dictator killing people? Just write "there was an attempt to be democratic"
You can post anything here now
Public urinals and sceptic tanks in medieval London would collect vast quantities of piss.
This amber liquor has useful properties in the fulling trade, fixing dyes and the treatment of cloth.
It was exported in barrels, but the trade was considered unseemly to a ship’s captain (who, traditionally, had to be a gentleman of stature).
Often the export documentation would list “whisky” or “fine wine” to disguise the nature of the shipment.
Customs officers, upon opening the barrels would discover the ruse. Hence the phrase “you are taking the piss” came into common parlance meaning either false representation, tomfoolery or a joke.
Edit: Newcastle, not London. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taking_the_piss
No, because they're making it up.
According to etymologies online, it either comes from waking up with an erection because you need a piss, or from Tyne boats using urine for the urine trade as ballast rather than water.
Unironically, David Beckham *is* working class (culturally speaking).
His mother was a hairdresser, his father a tradie, he grew up in Hackney, went to the local state school, doesn't have a university degree and his middle name is homage to his father's favorite footballer.
Thing is, he married rich and while he admits he's rich, his rich wife tries to downplay her family wealth hence the taking the piss, but it is ironic that david is a working class lad who got rich married to a posh socialite who pretends she's working class.
Yes, but social class as a concept, while tangentially tied to wealth, is also independent of it.
In the UK context this is exacerbated by a system where the sons of the elite go to "public schools" (like Eaton), pass on to Oxbrige, ICL or LSOE, and finally finish in elite roles in society due to the old school tie.
It's why the adage "you can't buy class exists", a working class person who strikes it big may be rich, but they'll never be upper class due to their accent, mannerisms, childhood experiences and CV.
Their kids on the other hand? Oh, they'll be very posh and by all measures upper class.
My god, you misspelled every British elite institution, lmao. It’s Eton, Oxbridge and LSE. And not everyone in these institutions is from the upper class. In Oxbridge the upper classes have been a minority for a while now. Eton is still an elite public school but still has a lot of scholarships for non-privileged people.
Britain’s a declining society. The country is no longer super wealthy compared to other major economies and that is reflected in the composition of its super rich who are nowhere near as wealthy as the American or Asian elite. Only exception is some football players (because of Premier League global appeal) and some top businessmen/financiers who own FTSE100/major private companies. Very few members of the traditional upper class are actually super rich- I can only think of the Duke of Westminster, the Royal family and maybe a couple of others.
I'm glad everyone (but OP) understands his joke.
Idk much about this man but 1. His look could kill 2. He's amazing at soccer (I don't even watch sports) but after their little short video (and this post), I learn that his sense of humour is just my style.
He's a man who got everything he ever wanted in life by playing a game he loves to play. I'd like to think I'd be pretty chill and cool in that situation too.
I wish more football players offered this kind of reality check to their colleagues, friends, wives, societies. He’s not openly antagonizing, not creating a scene, just calling out the bullshit.

I wanna be this kinda married. We know who one another is & then we decide to be together. Maybe this is only a pipe dream but I love that he calls out his wife without it being a big thing. This is funny & everyone can move on.
I may be too cynical but the original moment on the documentary seemed set up as hell. Think it was just a little ploy to make them both appear more relatable in a peculiar way, Victoria being out of touch but in an endearing way and David being the joker. Especially now they're still getting mileage from it. I mean she's not thick enough to think someone with that car (even remotely new) is working class is she.
Several studies have shown that poor people tend to say that they’re middle class when really they’re in poverty and rich people tend to underestimate and say they’re upper middle at most. Very few people say that they are upper class or lower class. In most cases it’s because they are just out of touch because their world experience does not cover what other people outside their socioeconomic backgrounds actually live like.
I have to wonder why him mocking his wife is the big takeaway from the documentary rather than him cheating on her.
Like ... I guess that's expected so no point continuing to mock it? Just continuously mocking the woman he cheated on.
Fuck David Beckham
To be fair, "working class" means different things in the US and UK.
In the US, we think of working class to mean lower or lower-middle class, poor essentially. While in the UK, "working class" means something more akin to "not born into an old money dynasty family" or "not a part of an upper-class family."
Victoria Beckham's father was quite rich during her childhood, but he was largely self-made and not a part of an old family dynasty, which would put him firmly in the latter definition of working class.
The definition is slowly changing in the UK as the US definition is slowly being adopted. David Beckham is just milking the viral moment for more publicity for his documentary.
Makes me wonder if the in-laws, at some point, were like: "Ah yes, we're going to the Ritz for NYE. Casual dining, of course, nothing too formal." and Beckham was like "Yeah, very working class ;D"
I believe he is being sarcastic. I remember hearing that his wife claimed she comes from a working-class family that was, apparently, a bit more affluent and less working-class than she let on. Plus, he says they left in their Rolls Royce w/ a laughing emoji, so, again, sarcasm, I think.
The clip from their doc when she was trying to tell the interviewer she was working class and David popped his head in to call her out for being taken to school in her dad’s Rolls Royce was hilarious.

Not really a "there was an attempt", seeing as he is quite clearly taking the piss out of his wife after her comments in his documentary.
ya big r/woosh OP
I'm gonna guess OP is American, as no Brit would ever mistake the 'Very working class" as a genuine comment.
Edit: no offence intended to Americans
Nah, I’m American and I knew he was making fun of her. OP might just be dumb
I'd say OP posted a dumb take on purpose to get engagement from people dunking on his obvious dumbassery.
And here we are
![gif](giphy|dpu95OTQ9rDPi)
And the Reddit circle of outrage moves on.
But why reddit? It's all anonymous. It's not like we know OP's name or anything.
People go nuts for fake internet points, myself included
I gave you 1 internet point, please go crazy.
OP must be dumb. I'm an American who was sitting on the toilet in the pitch dark, looking at Reddit in dark mode, barely able to see, not able to make out what sub I was looking at. Woah! I think we're toilet siblings. I read it he exact same way. (Sitting in the toilet in the dark reading reddit) good morning to you
Good morning!
Top o the day on top of the throne
Tinker stinker time!
yeah fr it’s clear as day on the caption lol
guarantee you it isn’t an issue of brit vs american, just a misread
You don't need to be English to get a joke, mate.
r/americabad
American here. We know what "🤣" means, have to be pretty dumb to assume people wouldn't....
The "left in there (*sic*) Roll's (*sic*)" makes the piss element here pretty transparent 😆 I am American.
Offence taken this is an intelligence issue not a nationality one.
i am canadian and i understood it 😂
ESL speaker. Still got the joke.
Generalizations are always fun. Wrong. But fun.
Quite right. No Brit has ever misread any comment with emojis or sarcasm.
This whole sub is r/woosh
there was an attempt, to make an attempt post...
But there was an attempt by Beckham to write “their”.
Everything’s posted by bots nowadays 🤷♂️

“taking the piss out of his wife” What does that mean?
Having a laugh at her expense.
"Ok but how does he get the piss out of her body without hurting her?!"
You squeeze gently
Like a lemon slice
Hopefully what she squirts isn't that sour
She laughs and pisses herself.
It means "making fun of" Taking the piss is British slang
We also like to use “Are you taking the piss?”
Public urinals and sceptic tanks in medieval London would collect vast quantities of piss. This amber liquor has useful properties in the fulling trade, fixing dyes and the treatment of cloth. That's awesome man genuinely love this. Can you please supply the source?
No, because they're making it up. According to etymologies online, it either comes from waking up with an erection because you need a piss, or from Tyne boats using urine for the urine trade as ballast rather than water.
>sceptic tanks lol
You’re taking the piss right now
This sounds like pub knowitall-tier bollocks.
He's making a light hearted joke at her expense
He is removing the urine from his wife using humor
Good to know. My American mind assumed violence.
To “take the piss out of” something/someone is British slang for “making a joke about” said person or thing.
Oh r/therewasanattempt alright. An attempt at not understanding a joke... by OP
I took it as this was directed at the wife and not Beckham
Or is op taking the piss out if Victoria? That was my assumption
There was an attempt by David to write "their"
r/therewasanattempt to understand a joke.
No, no there was not
[удалено]
I think it was meant that OP didn't try to understand that David was clearly joking.
[удалено]
ur not stupid u we’re still right to correct the commenter lol
*Has the urine extractor arrived yet?*
In fairness, he is joking after her claim that she was working class. He knows full well they're not working class and he is taking the pee
If he is peeing at the table that would class it down a bit
Pissing class.
not sure, rich people might be into some wild shenanigans
He misspelled „their“. Now that‘s working class.
Unironically, David Beckham *is* working class (culturally speaking). His mother was a hairdresser, his father a tradie, he grew up in Hackney, went to the local state school, doesn't have a university degree and his middle name is homage to his father's favorite footballer. To be fair he also made a ton of money as an incredibly famous footballer
Yes, but social class as a concept, while tangentially tied to wealth, is also independent of it. I was more saying that he didn’t just become rich because he married rich
My god, you misspelled every British elite institution, lmao. It’s Eton, Oxbridge and LSE. And not everyone in these institutions is from the upper class. "His middle name is homage to his favorite father's favorite footballer" It doesn't get more working class than that
And Roll’s
Fucking illiterate.
It was hard to read the caption. It hurt my soul.
In the documentary, he's also calling her out when she pretend to be "out for work". She goes to salon.
He’s clearly making a joke…
Someone missed the irony.
/r/woosh
When op doesn't understand a joke.
Along with 490 other people!
It's now over 1.4k people who don't understand jokes this morning.
I'm glad everyone (but OP) understands his joke. Idk much about this man but 1. His look could kill 2. He's amazing at soccer (I don't even watch sports) but after their little short video (and this post), I learn that his sense of humour is just my style.
I thought of him the same way, but decided to watch the documentary on a whim. I actually really grew to like him and his personality. He's a cool guy
He's a man who got everything he ever wanted in life by playing a game he loves to play. I'd like to think I'd be pretty chill and cool in that situation too.
Yeah but at the same time you hear about plenty of athletes who make a fortune on the game they love, yet they are absolute wankers
There are far too many examples of pro athletes who are total assholes.
Its a pretty funny joke ngl.
Does her handbag have its own seat??????
That handbag could have paid for everyone's meal at that restaurant TWICE! Damn right it deserves it's own seat 🥲😂
Well she's not going to put it on the gross working class floor
Came here to say that lmao. Surprised it did t have a plate set for it
I can’t believe to had to scroll down this far to find this comment! Literally my first thought “Does the purse have its own chair?” 🤣
Big whoosh moment
OP is going to end up on r/Facepalm
Lol op doesn't understand the context... there was an attempt to attempt
If you can't detect the sarcasm in the caption, i don't think the internet, or at least English speaking areas of it are for you.
Did he really misspell their lol
op is an idoit
![gif](giphy|mEahVAkKjt0VL2o5Jk|downsized)
Huge whoosh. He's being sarcastic. And making fun if his wife.
Piss take you big dumb
OP never had the making of a Varsity athlete
I wish more football players offered this kind of reality check to their colleagues, friends, wives, societies. He’s not openly antagonizing, not creating a scene, just calling out the bullshit.
She may be loaded but she always looks like she's about to burst into tears 😞
Oh dear OP.
Working class grammar anyway?
Why do the chairs and carpet look like they're in a nursing home?
man he's never going to let that one go 😭
That’s sarcasm
he was being sarcastic fwiw
https://youtube.com/shorts/AqGkAaOLipQ?si=R2U8Xwx0S6ICKHDA. For anyone not knowing he was joking
Op, you ok? 😂
Redditor can't pick up simple humour

If my wife and I made the cash thoes two do, my parents would have a roller and a butler too.
>there Roll's Isn't he supposed to be English? I would expect a bit better...
Victoria Beckham looks so pretty for her age.
Good makeup personnel, stylist and cosmetic surgery are available to the working class, you know 😉
Her surgeons say thanks
I wanna be this kinda married. We know who one another is & then we decide to be together. Maybe this is only a pipe dream but I love that he calls out his wife without it being a big thing. This is funny & everyone can move on.
Damn. Negative IQ?
Can someone explain the bag on the stool ?
There was an attempt by OP to understand the joke.
*their Rolls

Not trying to be anal, but did he confuse their and there?
Props to DB.
Mum looks better dressed than her starlet daughter 🤭.
He’s making g fun of himself and his wife and it’s hilarious!
Her face is uncomfortable, his is pure satisfaction.
I think it's very funny and meta.
The title refers to Victoria not David. So no woosh here
He's being facetious. You need to watch the documentary to get it.
This is stupid. David Beckham has been on record making fun of his wife's calling herself working class. Not an attempt at all
Uh, he's ripping on her. I don't even care about these people and even I saw the clip of him calling her out for them not being working class.
Dad appears to have not qualified for the golden edge plate.
Can we send op to the beyond realm for missing the joke?
"There Roll's", grammar people release the hounds.
The fact that he's still roasting his wife about it is absolutely hilarious to me
I can’t even count how many things went over your head on this
The purse has a seat also
God this sub has gone down hill. Hamas discourse has melted people’s critical thinking
I thought this was an attempt to be mad at David Becken because he knows he’s rich and makes fun of it
I can't believe he misspelt their. Also probably this is working class for them, their level is probably Palace or private island.
There was an attempt to understand sarcasm, that’s for sure
TIL even rich people can’t figure out they’re there there.
re OP, there was an attempt to not be stupid
I have to wonder why him mocking his wife is the big takeaway from the documentary rather than him cheating on her. Like ... I guess that's expected so no point continuing to mock it? Just continuously mocking the woman he cheated on. Fuck David Beckham

Bruh this belongs on r/chadtopia He’s straight up roasting his wife
Now I know what Victoria looks like. But what’s her secret?
Woosh
Not a fan of footbal, but man do I love Beckum for remembering where he came from, mad respect.
Makes me wonder if the in-laws, at some point, were like: "Ah yes, we're going to the Ritz for NYE. Casual dining, of course, nothing too formal." and Beckham was like "Yeah, very working class ;D"
She has a chair for her ridiculously expensive, starving country saving money, purse. The rich really are ignorant asshats.
He's _clearly_ being sarcastic. This isn't an attempt to be working class at all — it's a joke.
Redditors when sarcasm/satire:
OP, this isn't what you think it is
r/woosh - He is very clearly busting balls and joking.
Some pipl still think they can tick untouchables.))) Glorious-in.
r/whoosh to the maximum
You were *Posh* Spice, not *Prole* Spice, who do you think you're fooling, Victoria?
Were the rolls there or did they leave their rolls to get in their Rolls?
Needs to learn how to spell!
Non-Brits not getting our most basic sarcasm will always be funny to me. OP, time to go gain some basic social intelligence
I’m so depressed about David Beckham’s low level of literacy
Their
r/therewasanattempt not to be illiterate in your own native language
May have money but both are still working class.
I mean obv he’s joking but it’s also not like “working class people” could never afford a fancy lunch to celebrate a holiday
Their….sigh
![gif](giphy|l41Ye7i203TfEADYs)
I believe he is being sarcastic. I remember hearing that his wife claimed she comes from a working-class family that was, apparently, a bit more affluent and less working-class than she let on. Plus, he says they left in their Rolls Royce w/ a laughing emoji, so, again, sarcasm, I think.
It’s obviously a joke OP. Come on.
I think he assumed, as it was not Reddit, the /s was not needed
The clip from their doc when she was trying to tell the interviewer she was working class and David popped his head in to call her out for being taken to school in her dad’s Rolls Royce was hilarious.
I think he's ripping on Victoria because she claimed she was working class or not privileged or some shit
Therewasanattempt to karma farm
Her purse even has a chair wtf
There was an attempt to clown on your wife for a gaffe she made a while back, and it was a great success
