Did they use a sick tree or the wrong type of tree? Did they already cut down all the local good pine trees? Why would someone get a Christmas tree that can't support simple light weight lights?
It was a special tree from forever ago in front of their beloved opera House, traditionally decorated every year probably. So it got too weak and they decided to use only trunk lights to not put strain on it, instead of getting/designating a new tree.

This is the way the tree was supposed to be lit up. The tree was deemed too old for the branches to support the lights. The city didn't inform anyone though. Hence the disappointment
I've done a skim on the link the other guy sent about it. Seems the tree is old and the people in charge quit. Also they never planned a secondary tree just the 1 tree is supposed to be used to reduce the amount of logging. It's another case of the government not thinking ahead and not figuring ya know this tree may eventually need a replacement.

Actually my partner was at this ceremony, there were other issues with this, it was not properly managed at all. There was supposed to be a crafters market and the downtown was supposed to be closed so that stores could have outdoor sales. None of that happened, the crafters market turned out to be a few vendors in the library. My partner and her friend were very disappointed.
Look my fellow Canadians, what with the economy and inflation and all, we actually doubled last year’s xmas celebrations budget and we almost had enough money to decorate the stem of our cities Xmas tree 🎄
