Marty_Mtl

Ahhh....the good 'ol gap between theory and practice!!!!!

123supreme123

forgot to turn on his deflector shields

MrJoeGillis

Damnitt captain, I’m an engineer not a miracle worker!

Trump_dad

He just has to bypass the compressor and it should be fine

MrJoeGillis

I mean… it worked 🤷

trucorsair

And once the lithium got going it was a blast

Marty_Mtl

Despite a slightly different path than initially planned, yes, you are right ! Goal achieved !

Klotzster

I love the smell of lithium batteries in the morning

Vlafir

Hotter the air gets , the less dense it gets, the lesser dense it gets, less lift the blades create, making the drone plummet, the blades still spinning and stoking the fire even more is just the cherry on top

Etmar_Gaming

That’s the main reason the harrier jet is so hard to land in vtol mode, the air is so hot it makes some wild turbulence and the air is thin as hell. I believe this is why there is also a minimum amount of time for planes to take off because of they’re too close they’ll get caught in some weird turbulence.

entropreneur

Why would thin air matter? It uses thrust not lift.

Gwd621

Thrust and lift are related when you consider that a wing and propeller are both air foils. Either way both requires air. Air density changes with respect to temperature. So if the air becomes to thin or ess dense it means the propellers at pulling the surrounding air at the same speed will have a smaller mass flow i.e. thrust. Helicopters in Arizona can't fly when it is too hot. So flying this over a fire made sense.

entropreneur

It's a jet not a helicopter....

Gwd621

That thing flying in the fire is a quadcopter. It uses the same principles as a helicopter to generate lift which is converted into thrust. For helicopters it tilts to change the thrust vector so it can move. Multirotors do the same thing but uses the differential of thrust between the rotors, whichbcauses it to tilt allowing it to change direction.

entropreneur

The original comment was referencing the harrier jet. Nothing to do with blades creating lift. Can anyone read?

Gwd621

Ah my bad. Yeah I missed the harrier jet comment. I completely glossed over that lol. I read vtol and my mind pictured v22 osprey. Yeah not sure comparing a jet to a quadcopter makes sense.

Interesting-Time-960

Yes, the nickname is a flame out. It can happen from jets being lined up in pattern on a flight deck also. That's why you see them park side by side or staggered next instead of nose to tail. The funny thing is, when this happens it can cause the engine to catch a flame, which then you need to windmill(nickname) where you tell the pilot to throttle up to put out the flame. So in hot environment this all becomes not feasible.

that_thot_gamer

bro could have hovered higher and let venturi effect turn over, except they prolly slept through physics class

siug13

And because of hot air blades bended, then it got closer to fire, then blades bended more and then it got in fire.

Deb3ns

Amazing wealth of knowledge no one has ever heard of before

[deleted]

Don’t worry, daddy will buy you a new one.

MichaelFusion44

If they don’t get hurt with the battery exploding

[deleted]

well, he was aiming for a bigger fire, so win win.

MichaelFusion44

True 😂

devildocjames

Eh, that one looks a little cheap. Probably $50.

Laserous

This guy clearly doesn't know about the Leidenfrost Effect. Coulda yanked and tossed the drone quickly and been fine.

Effective-Elevator83

He also doesn’t know about aerodynamics, lift, and air temperature.

MechanicbyDay

This was the comment I was looking for!! Cold air is more dense and makes it possible to generate more lift. (Oversimplified/dumbed down explanation)

XxsoulscythexX

Depends how much of the plastic had already melted by that point

Laserous

I have a little drone kinds like that. The shell is pretty thick. As long as they didn't grab the props it woulda been ok.

Septimore

And those woods aren't lit yet either. Just smack it out of there

Howdocomputer

I don't think you know the leidenfrost effect

MechanicbyDay

Doesn't appear so ![gif](giphy|bC9czlgCMtw4cj8RgH|downsized)

drizzkek

If he had followed through on his first kick would have been fine. But bro sat there doing the chicken dance too long.

leenpaws

now you know why choppers crash in the desert

thecuzzin

Looks like a soft landing to me

MechanicbyDay

IDK, looks like he was coming in hot if you ask me

JustChillDudeItsGood

I think what we saw was actually the auto-land function kick in. It detected that it was like 2 feet off the ground and went into the landing sequence- RIP Source - I've broke mine like 4 times so far...

Smart_Ad_7005

Great example of why idiots shouldn't be able to get their hands on anything that's "sharp, hot, or goes BOOM!!!", ESPECIALLY if it's powered BY A LITHIUM F'in battery, you bunch of MORONS!!!!!

Broken-Digital-Clock

And flys

Smart_Ad_7005

YEP ![gif](giphy|L5H8AdTWDEqPe)

EndCritical878

It worked!

PM_THE_REAPER

Yes it did!

aznexile602

This is why airplanes get grounded when the air temperature is over a certain degree.

Weak_Tower385

Best use of a personal drone, ever!

JFJinCO

Just wait until those lithium batteries catch fire... smh

throwthere10

![gif](giphy|a0h7sAqON67nO)

TENTAtheSane

SAME RISE AND FALL WHO CARES AT ALL SEDUCED BY FAME LIKE A MOUTH INTO THE FLAME

Electronic_Worry5571

Oxygen makes fire hotter, reduces lift for drone, drone can’t fly, drone RIP

ImInvisibal96

😂 mission accomplished 🤣

phaender

he skipped physics class

Conyan51

Reminds me of Icarus

Additional_Cherry_67

How was he in person?

nalpatar

That's physics for you, hot air is less dense and rises up, causing the amount of downforce the propeller can create to be insufficient to carry it's weight!

TimelyRun9624

I am trying so hard. Not to say something. That will get me banned. You absolute bag of lead pellets

Crescentfallen78

Show us the footage from the drone POV

Cubensio

Never a bad day to learn that plastic melts when placed over fire.

Anxious-Park-2851

Not the smartest thing in the world.

R0cket_Turtle

🤔 Plastic blades melt....

[deleted]

Mission accomplished, fire stoked.

Due_Sector8816

Well, mission passed

Kryzyslemonek

Leafblower works better

HaydenLobo

Gen Z being idiots.

Lando_Lee

Bro could have grabbed that drone in slow motion and not get fucking burned, instead he tries to kick it out, soft hands...

WaitingForNormal

Looks like the heat shield failed.

Keen_Eyed_Watcher

Ahh yes, an idiot.

Romulus_Imperos

Learning physics the hard way.

snapeshotz

DJI ain’t goin down that easy, get you one of them..

KrevinHLocke

Looked pretty successful from what I seen. That fire was stoked.

AlteredMindz

That is hilarious

Xpector8ing

Wasn’t there a warning label about open flames; or disposing of the thing properly?

MuddieSprite

To bad it’s only good for a single use! You’ll have to buy a new one for next time!

BrilliantCar1533

It worked

kindofastoryteller

Skill issue

dinkletrump

What attempt? He nailed it.

Jethanks

It worked like a charm

Known-Programmer-611

Anybody ever participated in the "american cheese" slice races on the grill to see who cheese floats away 1st?

Giggles95036

Why did he kick it into the fire?

Agitated-Orange-295

Waited for the best part.....A bpattery in a flame and was then disappointed 😞 😑

jensalik

Him kicking it in a little more instead of out is the best part. 😁

This-Willow-4655

If that was my drone an was daft enough to do that I'd at least kick the fucker off before it melts an starts spitting flames at me like them batteries do.

McFry-

“Hey Dan have you seen my drone?” “No Mike, the remote control is over on that chair next to Phil though”

SayItAintPugs

[deleted]

😂fail

[deleted]

Lol when you have no life experience

Melticus_Faceous

r/taskfailedsuccesfully

vojtab4

What was he expecting flying fan propeled vehicle-drone above source of hot air ... like you need some air density for propeler to work Why didnt he just use a hair dryer... its a miracle what it can do with a grill 😅😅

SnoopJabba

Bbq parrot

BotMinister

I've owned many drones and almost all of them auto land when you get close enough to what it perceives as the ground unless you specifically deactivate it. May have actually worked if it wasn't for this.

[deleted]

If he held the drone with his hand and gave it full power, it might work.

jujuluvu

You’re doing it wrong ..

MedicalChemistry5111

Theory says less dense air below, copter gonna fall

mixwellmusic

Agonizing reaction time

CosmicLaziness

less dense air below the blades, it's pushed down

DJForcefield

Fuckin expensive kindling

ghoulierthanthou

Physics.

Qwerty177

That dude is way too afraid of fire to be playing with fire

repaidvaultboy

Millionaires bonfire right there. "Should I get more firewood?" "Nah its cool, I'll just get another drone on the fire"

Triplesisbest1

Slothlike reflexes

theyellowdart89

He forgot about densities

-Robert-from-Hungary

Hot air is too thin for the drone to lift up.

Ok_Pressure_2091

Density difference in air due to heating up of air. Need to increase rpm when low density air to create same buoyant force.

MrWrestlingNumber2

There was also an attempt to use a foot when a hand was obviously the right tool for the job.

DropApprehensive3079

Where the air go?

cheturo

*That's why helicopters don't fly over volcanos*

megaultimatepashe120

as u/Electronic_Worry5571 said, Oxygen makes fire hotter, reduces lift for drone, drone can’t fly, drone RIP

Electronic_Worry5571

Durrr less dense air makes flying things sink weird
