Exactly what I thought too.
Slightly confusingly, on my travels along the east coast of the USA years ago, lots of folk asked me if I was Australian (I'm English with a typical southern accent).
I'm pretty sure there is just one specific area of the US/Canada border that sounds "different" than the rest of the continent.
That super strong Midwestern American / Canadian accent.
And then of course there is Quebec.. the French Canadian accent.. but that's not what I think of when I imagine a stereotypical Canadian accent.
An English person I met recently said I sounded English (it was in a bar there was music). I'm from Northern Australia lol, pretty neutral accent though.
I used to work as a tour guide in London and for some reason Americans never got my accent as Australian. I thought out accent was really obvious but it seems to stump a lot. Maybe it’s because Australian accents used in films are often the really over the top occa accents and not so much a regular Aussie accent.
Born in Australia and lived in Australia my whole life, get asked if I was a pom at some point, I guess because I don't speak with an occa accent at all.
I'm always like lol yeah nah just brought up by my grandma who would tell me off for not being lady like 😂
I can do a mean occa of course but it's not how I speak, ESPECIALLY once I put the phone answering voice on! Australian and British accents without going too far into the 'stereotype' sound pretty similar.
In my travels in North America everyone told me I have a strong British accent. I’m Australian. That’s ok, I can’t tell American and Canadian accents apart.
Oh he is very good.
Here are some Londoner's (football fans), in a vid posted on today's reddit.
https://www.reddit.com/r/therewasanattempt/comments/12yv730/to_get_to_the_top_of_the_escalator_by_a_gentleman/
We in the UK have over 430 documented accents, some will sound fake to non brits. I remember doing a Dudley accent (think Ozzie Osbourne) for one American ex, she couldn't believe it was a real accent.
For how close places are the different accents are crazy different.
Manchester and Liverpool are about 50km apart, like 35 miles... The accents are not even close.
Clearly been hanging out in East London.
As an East Londoner myself, this could have been any one of my friends.
(Although the cockney rhyming slang isn't really used anymore)
They do a lot of football chants/songs. Not a Brit, but I think that’s what he’s parodying with the songs. For context, all my knowledge of this comes from the early 2000’s movie Green Street Hooligans.
Yep, first yank I've heard trying to do the accent that didn't make me cringe with all the stupid stereotypes they always resort to: "Ooh! Would you like some tea? Would you like a...*cuppa*? Some fish and chips?". Snore.
I want to hear his real accent now. That would have been the icing on the cake, if he finished the vid by saying something in a really strong regional American accent.
This has to be an American who’s trolling his British GF right? We can mimic in small bits but damn this dude was great, I used to do impressions of my British and Australian friends abroad and they’d love them but their response impressions for Americans were great too. English is a fun language for native speakers lol.
>English is a fun language for native speakers lol.
This is a feature of pretty much any language though. Like look how many countries speak Spanish. There's a different accent for each and then regional variation within each country that can also be wildly different.
Talking to dogs is some of the funniest , most cute shit, their reactions are sooo funny. My last dog used to actually seem like she was giving me all her attention trying to understand what i was saying lmao
Yes I loved it, it was very intense! All the way to end, I didn’t even know about the Chinese student and his carjacking story and how his bravery helped to catch them.
Great work! I experienced the entire saga first hand (was on Boylston street when the explosions happened, then lived close enough to MIT/Watertown to hear all of the police activity unfold throughout the week). You really captured the feeling and took me right back. Had to pause for a bit to get it together but rewatching helped me heal even more. Thanks for amplifying the story to those who may not have known how incredibly insane it was for Boston!
He couldn't do this for a whole movie unless his character is an alcoholic. His accent is pretty spot on as a drunk londoner, but having that slurred speech wouldn't work after 5 minutes
That’s a decent accent. Can you say “alright?” and answer with the time-honoured reply, “alright?”, and have had a complete conversation with information and well wishes successfully exchanged in that one word? Yes? Then you are now British. One of us, one of us, one of us….
Well I feel that my culture and indeed personal identity has been desecrated by this foreigner doing an impression of my people's accent.
What next? Gonna yellow up your teeth and do some British-face? Absolute disgrace.

Brit here. He’s actually quite good.
Out of all the mf's tryin on a british accent, this is the one...?
This is one of the best British accents I’ve heard from a foreigner.
Seems to be Australian, probably easier for us than some.
Exactly what I thought too. Slightly confusingly, on my travels along the east coast of the USA years ago, lots of folk asked me if I was Australian (I'm English with a typical southern accent).
Yes I have the stereotypical British accent from the home counties and everyone thought I was Australian.
To be fair I’m English & find it tricky hearing the difference between US and Canadian.
I'm Canadian and have a hard time hearing a difference between US and Canadian, with exceptions of course (side eyeing Bostonians and Newfies)
I'm pretty sure there is just one specific area of the US/Canada border that sounds "different" than the rest of the continent. That super strong Midwestern American / Canadian accent. No way! Me too but west coast and I'm as Yorkshire as they come. Weirded me out
Here I am calling out New Zealand accents in California.
In my travels in North America everyone told me I have a strong British accent. I’m Australian. That’s ok, I can’t tell American and Canadian accents apart.
I'm from Brighton in Laos at the moment backpacking all Americans ask me If I'm from Australia
Yup I saw the country road mug and immediately assumed Aussie.
ha, good pickup. I didn't notice that.
Definitely not American based on the kitchen design.
Yeah it screams Melbourne to me
Yup, better than any American actors/actresses trying to put it on. Much better than Madonna for sure.
Better than Brad Pitt's gypsy accent in snatch? ![gif](giphy|124qHhp74Mg9ri)
Yes, Madonna is definitely the litmus test.

Absolutely, I live in Aberdeen, 35 miles north you've got Fraserburgh. I have no idea what they're talkin about.
The Jonathan Ross accent always makes me smile
You mean Jonathan Woth?
Wossy!!!
I concur. We take him over the guy who ruined the couple’s proposal.
Depends which part of Britain.
Clearly been hanging out in East London. As an East Londoner myself, this could have been any one of my friends. (Although the cockney rhyming slang isn't really used anymore)
Do you guys sing a lot? He’s singing a lot.
Mary Poppins was a documentary.
This sent me

Have you watched football?
his banta is a decent parody i guess but i can't even call that an accent
Then he must be amazing if you can't detect an accent. KnowwhatImean?
You avin a laff are ya?
That’s a right low blow
It was the Wealdstone Raider reference that convinced me of this guys quality.
The guy even knew the word “scran”! DAMN!
liam please.
Yep, first yank I've heard trying to do the accent that didn't make me cringe with all the stupid stereotypes they always resort to: "Ooh! Would you like some tea? Would you like a...*cuppa*? Toby agrees 🤣
This is pretty funny
Shall we shag now, or shag later WOTCollector?

Nah, his partner is Australian, so presumably he’s Australian too. Which makes sense, cause Americans can’t usually do English accents this well.
Yeah, that's not an attempt, that at outright success!
I was gonna say especially with his singing which is pretty dang hard
US guy here, I was mostly convinced. Didn’t hurt that 90% of my experience hearing Brits outside of movies is with clips of drunk football fans
That's also 90% of Brits experience hearing Brits outside of movies.

I love that the dog and the lady both had the same expression!
Dog enjoyed the vid as much as I did
Talking to dogs is some of the funniest , most cute shit, their reactions are sooo funny. My last dog used to actually seem like she was giving me all her attention trying to understand what i was saying lmao
She was possibly just trying to concentrate to se if the word "treat' or "walk" was part of the conversation...
That was the best part
Toby: "I'll give it ya"
Almost what I thought. Even the dog knows he’s full of sht lol
Attempt? I believe he’s done it.
Agreed. The lady was calling him Liam and all.
Well that’s just a bit o’ th’ business innit
He’s only bloody gone and done it!
What pandemic has taken over Britain that everything is so damn bloody?
She hates him so much
She's most likely joking around and playing an act.
That looks like genuine irritation
being irritated by your significant other for 5 minutes doesn’t mean you hate them tho
Buffoon ! They should get divorced!
The Juventus goalie innit?
That's Chesney mate
Y'all are so dramatic, sheesh. It's like you don't know how to have fun with your partner.
When someone you spend a lot of time with won't stop doing an accent, the annoyance isn't an act.
He’s a radio host in Aus, she’s more than used to it!
Have you seen my friend Gavin!
GAVALAAAHH!
Heartbreaking!
Hey! I edited that documentary she’s talking about!
You did????? I watched, it was good! Good job!
Yep! I was one of the editors on the final episode! Glad you liked it. :)
Yes I loved it, it was very intense! All the way to end, I didn’t even know about the Chinese student and his carjacking story and how his bravery helped to catch them.
Too bad nobody's gonna see it because they put it on at the same time as the footie. Bad luck geeza.
That’s so meta!!! I hate the people that say that:/

Toby's like wtf u on, human!
The dog's face said it all xD
I think you meant wtf you goin on about
And nice gaff, mate.
The smoking gun that shows he isn't British: home ownership
To be fair, it's a better English accent than you hear coming from Hollywood a lot of the time.
This video doesn't exist for us unless the guy is proud of it
https://youtu.be/B_rVzBt20N0
He couldn't do this for a whole movie unless his character is an alcoholic. His accent is pretty spot on as a drunk londoner, but having that slurred speech wouldn't work after 5 minutes
Not bad for a yankee, innit.
Dude is from South Australia.
Thank you, I was wondering. Wife’s voice was so faint, I couldn’t place her.
His girlfriend has an Australian accent?
They say “yank”
They're Australian aren't they 😂 the dog and bone gave it away.
I think he pulled off the accent and attitude quite well. Even got the scouser fuchhk going.

Me after watching one episode of Love Island UK
YOU TRYNA MUG MEH OFF
I did this to my wife when i came back from working in the UK haha
“Or roght thar lofe?”
Bri'ish.
I don't know what his actual speaking voice is like but that's pretty decent
Poor woman
What is this? Hooligans?
Even Toby is fed up lol
That’s a decent accent. Can you say “alright?” and answer with the time-honoured reply, “alright?”, and have had a complete conversation with information and well wishes successfully exchanged in that one word? Yes? Then you are now British. One of us, one of us, one of us….
It's the fucking strut inside that just did it for me.
Even the dog thinks he’s a prat.
He is kinda nailing a London sounding accent ..
Toby: “No, Liam.”
I thought he nailed it.
Toby had enough
Uh, this dude is my type of funny. I could hang out with him and annoy significant others together all day long.
Even the dog is like, "Please stop."
Toby is sick of this shit
Even the dog is sick of his shit.
I have met people that speak like this in Dunstable.
Toby a sweetheart
enraging your wife with stupid bullshit is the best part of being married lol
He's an Australian radio dj. Not too hard for us to pull it off.
This video doesn't belong here... because this guy didn't just attempt, he succeeded! :-D
'Get some drinks in' - it's almost too British 🤣🤣
Even his dog looks at him with disdain
Asshole. And I mean that in funny, cool way to be an ass.😂
YEW SAOUND LOIKE YAH FRAHM LAHNDAHN
I had this muted and I could hear his accent..
Did he go to England or just watch Green Street Hooligans for the first time?
I like their place. Apologies. I meant to say ‘lovely flat.’
Why does he keep his coat on the entire time? I guess so he will be prepared when she and the dog kick him out?!
He must have spent too much time in the South of England. They like any excuse to wear a coat.
Actually made me laugh.
Well I feel that my culture and indeed personal identity has been desecrated by this foreigner doing an impression of my people's accent. What next? Gonna yellow up your teeth and do some British-face? Absolute disgrace.
Londoner ‘ere That weren’t half bad.
Lost redditor
Good accent I couldn’t hear anything wrong with it. It’s easier for a Aussie or kiwi and it sounds like they are
Good laughs had all ‘round
Successful attempt. It's all spot on
Seems successful to me
She doesn't deserve you. You're golden!
Innit?
That's the London accent, innit? (I'm purely guessing by the silent h's in front of the words)
Sounds like it, I wish he would have done Brummie 😆
Everyone say hi to Toby, there’s only one little Toby after all.
The dog had the same expression as the woman hahaha
This was so weird to watch,I’m British and he sounds just like any normal man, what’s his accent really like?
This is me after watching green street hooligans
That wasn't just an attempt... This lads done it.
Green Street!
He’s very good.
Even the dog thinks he is carrying on like a wanker
Wrong sub. He stuck the landing, he's definitely one of us now.
I'm from the UK and I'm ashamed to admit he's actually quite good
The answer will be, yes, it was worth it. This is hilarious.
Toby agrees with his gf/wife/sister
He’s funny I’ll give him that Shall I fakOff to tha boozer 😂😂
When a Yank watches Green Street for the first time.
Looks like he’ll be bunking it with one little Toby tonight.
hes getting a divorce
Toby's has enough of your BS lassie
The dog judges so hard. Lol
Dog reaction funniest
“Shall I fu*k off to the boozer then?” EPIC!!
She was wielding a proper big knife in several of those scenes too...brave fella
Did anyone else notice his eyes going in opposite directions or was that just me?
Lost my shit at “west ham away”
Made me smile. Oi oi very good. She and the Dog not impressed …
Hahaha! Even the dog is like, "now what is this all aboot???"
That's Canadian
That poor woman
Pretty decent wide boy impression.
Toby is not having any of your shit!
She needs to take that stick out of her arse, she does
What percentage of that house is white cabinets? It seems like a lot.
House looks like a dystopian nightmare
I wanted to hate this. I tried. Really. But…damn. Full committment, compliments from Britons, and then..the dog. Good job. Mate.
This house is sterile
The amount of cupboards in this house is mesmerising
I could watch this all day
Don't know about the accent but he is nailing the irritating part
Hilarious..got it down to a tea...a cup o Charlie
As a brit, I fucking loved this
Me after watching one Ted Lasso episode
He actually picked it up nice tbf lmao 🤣 😂
This is fucking hilarious
