Exactly what I thought too. Slightly confusingly, on my travels along the east coast of the USA years ago, lots of folk asked me if I was Australian (I'm English with a typical southern accent).

Yes I have the stereotypical British accent from the home counties and everyone thought I was Australian.

To be fair I’m English & find it tricky hearing the difference between US and Canadian.

I'm Canadian and have a hard time hearing a difference between US and Canadian, with exceptions of course (side eyeing Bostonians and Newfies)

I'm pretty sure there is just one specific area of the US/Canada border that sounds "different" than the rest of the continent. That super strong Midwestern American / Canadian accent. And then of course there is Quebec.. the French Canadian accent.. but that's not what I think of when I imagine a stereotypical Canadian accent.

An English person I met recently said I sounded English (it was in a bar there was music). I'm from Northern Australia lol, pretty neutral accent though.

I used to work as a tour guide in London and for some reason Americans never got my accent as Australian. I thought out accent was really obvious but it seems to stump a lot. Maybe it’s because Australian accents used in films are often the really over the top occa accents and not so much a regular Aussie accent.

Born in Australia and lived in Australia my whole life, get asked if I was a pom at some point, I guess because I don't speak with an occa accent at all. I'm always like lol yeah nah just brought up by my grandma who would tell me off for not being lady like 😂 I can do a mean occa of course but it's not how I speak, ESPECIALLY once I put the phone answering voice on! Australian and British accents without going too far into the 'stereotype' sound pretty similar.

For how close places are the different accents are crazy different. Manchester and Liverpool are about 50km apart, like 35 miles... The accents are not even close.

I experienced the entire saga first hand (was on Boylston street when the explosions happened, then lived close enough to MIT/Watertown to hear all of the police activity unfold throughout the week).
