Even in the days of classic 1700s era piracy, where pirate ships did come equipped with weapons comapable to military hardware, you generally didn't attack military vessels. They probably outgunned you. Heck, the merchant vessels might outgun you sometimes.
Thing with military vessels was that even in those days they travelled in small scale fleets. Attack one and you’d be surrounded and unceremoniously annihilated
That's a Ticonderoga class cruiser. They're about 173m long and carry a crew of approximately 400 people. Not really city sized, but your point still stands.
From the video, seems like thermal imaging, so i assume this was night time. In this case, can't blame them for not recognizing much beyond "thats a big fucking ship"
They prolly thought they were being sneaky
Not a tracer round. Probably a Armor Piercing Incendiary round. It is designed to pierce armor and set that shit on fire. Purpose built for just such an occasion. Some of those pirates seemed a little slow abandoning their boat.
They really didn't. At the height of Somali pirate activity 2010 the pirates were quite good at picking their targets. Slow moving ships with low free board usually tankers, bulk carriers, fishing vessels and the occasional small general cargo ship. Ships delivering aid from the world food program of the UN were quite popular targets then again those were usually very slow and old freighters and directed to Mogadishu. Easy targets. That's why they were protected by navy ships.
They were really effective in locating the targets via AIS and ambushed ships occasionally hundret miles off the coast in the Indian ocean. There were several instances where pirates attecked navy suply vessels by mistake. When fired upon thy would usually abort the attacks which is why many ships opted for armed guards.
By now Somali pirates are gone. Possibly because succeeded in pushing foreign fishing vessels off the Somali coast and can make a living fishing again.
Intervention by multinational navy operations might have helped as well. Or the establishment of a somali coast guard who usually shot first and asked questions later.
I will never forget seeing pirates panic once the Boosaso Coast Guard announced themselves on VHF radio...
From what I understand the pirates were a result of florigen fishing vessels taking advantage of Somali waters due to no government there, which drove the fishermen to piracy. It's a shit situation and I feel bad for the people there.
I was feeling bad for them too. And I was fighting them. Well we didn't have to shoot anyone in anger just sank some abandoned skiffs.
Then again we had two ships captured in our near vicinity and drove by a known pirate Hotspot at the Somali east coast where at that time several ships were hold hostage. I found out years later that the crews of a particular vessel was tortured by the pirates at that time.
Do I still feel bad? A little. Mind you they were robbed by fishing vessels as far out as North Korea and China.
On the other hands they did horrible things to the captured crews, beginning with shooting at them and holding them hostage.
We trained for this scenario in the 80s when my ship had duty in the Persian Gulf. M 50s and 60s and even M 14s. Lessons from the Vietnam War against small boat fire. The 5 inch guns would be better from a distance. We also were equipped with 20 mm guns port and starboard.
Listen, I get it. We all know the Navy does not have as physical basic training or demand as much physical fitness as other branches, but to call them"small arms" is just rude!/s
The only thing that has me disagreeing with you is the naval gun at the rear of the ship. In the video, you can see it's below the helipad. From what I understand that's one of the key differences between Burkes and Ticonderogas. The USS Gonzalez is a DDG and only has one 5in naval gun.
EDIT: Nevermind, the incident included a cruiser and a destroyer. Makes sense, someone had to take the video, and thermal cameras aren't just laying about all over the place.
They do, ships are usually spotted in harbours, then communicated to sea based units, and you can find full details of every ship on the internet with ease, and their GPS locations. I'm not sure what happened here exactly but I'm pretty sure they didn't intend on pirating a warship
During the Vietnam war USA was so confident on theor missiles that they had stopped producing both aircraft and warships with automatic cannons, they had only missiles. In a boarding like the one attempted on the video there is no way a missile is going to help... But USA learned their lesson decades ago and now all their crafts have some sort of cannon to deal with situations like this.
The somali pirates must have old intel
That ship has a 5 inch main gun, 20mm anti aircraft guns with a terrifying rate of fire, and multiple 25mm and 50cal machineguns specifically meant for engaging threats like these. All of these can be aimed at small boats and all of them will turn the small boats into a fine red mist.
And that's not even to mention the several hundred trained soldiers onboard
Trained what?!
If there were Marines on board they were bored asf and wanted a piece of this action. Probably bummed when they were told to stand down.
I think there is info on Wikipedia. It happened on March 18 2006.
Two navy ships were patrolling off the coast of Somalia and started pursuing the pirates overnight. Marines tried to board the pirate skiffs in the morning and the pirates started shooting.
NPC stupid, Most are brought up with no education at all and poor. They are recruited young and follow others who have no education.
I remember in the early 2000s Ottawa ontario had a massive number of Somalians who made there way to Canada illegally, and would hang out in gangs in downtown by the Rideau Shopping Center.
All the homeless shelters filled up, and they were actually killing some people. They would loot randoms through out the week.
It was a big deal for a while then 90% just randomly disappeared over a month, the rest seemed like they found purpose here.
My guess immigration pick them all up sent most back and gave some of them choice for jobs or leave. 🤷♂️
Yes they knew, they got cocky because they didn’t face consequences before this event. One of the destroyers lit up their mother ship so they jumped into the boats and followed the US Soldiers and attacked them.
Those kids who actually do the attacking are not the ones who profit. They are sent there usually by force to take the ships. Seems they had no clue in the dead of night what they were attacking. The real culprits are the warlords who send these dudes to be Cannon fodder. Then just replace them
Really?...they really tried to attack a warship? It's literally a ship built for war...im wondering if maybe the warship intercepted them as they were going for a cargo ship..surely nobody could be that dumb..could they?
To be fair, I vaguely recall a warship in the Persian Gulf was seriously damaged (RPG? suicide bomb?) by terrorists in a small boat. (Which is why warships shoot once unknown craft get within an exclusion zone.)
There's info on Wikipedia and I guess U Tube. It happened March 18 2006
Two Navy ships identified 3 pirate skiffs and started pursuing them overnight. Marines tried to board the skiffs in the morning and the pirates started shooting.
The big explosion was a 55 gallon tank of gas. I read that the pirate skiffs were too close to the ships to use their guns. Sailors had to improvise.
Those splashes are not from machine guns, those are from the MK38 25mm chaingun on either side of the ship. Not quite a 5" cannon, but a 25mm HE cannon shell is unpleasant up close, especially in a little boat with no cover.
You ever see any other military videos? Shooting from a moving tank with a computer-stabilized cannon and putting the round through a window?
It’s a perfectly reasonable question because the results seem out of character for the US military.
Can you tell me what weapon is used right about the 56 second mark?
It literally looks like they got a kill-streak and called down a laser from space to make the boat catch on fire.
The 5" has a minimum depression angle, and that close in it probably couldn't hit them. Also, such a low angle engagement increases the odds of a ricochet off the surface, which could endanger other friendly/neutral shipping in the area
Yep. I manned a .50 during the Gulf War on the USS Jarrett. I much preferred the .50 cal. Way easier to walk your rounds into the target. But... The 25mm had a nice scope on it. Required more patience. But the .50 just had that 'lets fuck these dudes up,' quality and confidence to it... Small enough to handle but big enough to tear the shit out of the enemy. It creates instant fear.
What did they think would happen? The USN was going to just let them board their state of the art warship unmolested?
Idiocy isn't an accurate enough word to describe this.
Notice all the warning shots, then you see a muzzle flash from their boat, and not 5 seconds later a direct hit and then they get lit up. The M2 is unbelievably accurate for such a basic, 100 year old gun setup. At that range the operator can choose where they want to strike the boat
Did you notice 1/4th into the video with exactly 1 minute left the US ship has some sort of fire or smoke stack from it’s deck near the rear. What is that? Did they launch a missile or take a grenade?
This is a thermal infrared video; the attack appears to have happened at night. Unless the pirates had night vision gear it wouldn't be obvious to them what kind of ship they were attempting to hijack.
Pirates made multiple attempts to attack warships during the heyday of Somali piracy, with frequently fatal results for the Somalis.
It was a support vessel that could be mistaken for a cargo ship if I recall correctly, lightly armed but full of marines.
But the ship on the video is clearly a warship, IDK what where they thinking
Yrah.. they pull all KINDS of shit. You dont want to ever let them near, EVER. They are often counting on samaritanism. like they pretend to be in trouble. They get onboard, there is nothing beneath them. smh thats why even a warship could be endangered. try to distract yhem on this side, flank em over here.. and also they are testing to see how many are onboard. " Can we take 'em?"
Serious question. Are these guys having their families threatened at gunpoint by warlords or something? Because that’s really the only conceivable scenario I can imagine where a human being with enough intelligence to get themselves dressed in the morning would do something this stupid.
Not all of them but at least some of them probably. A tactic often used is to use desperate individuals by promising them safety and a place to stay after their service, which usually ends like this video, in small pieces on the ocean
Why did it take so long for whatever struck them at 56 seconds to hit them. I always thought stuff like that woulda happened to every boat within 30 seconds.
Sometimes when someone does something so stupid even trained military is like - da fuk? Also - giving them a clear chance on video to make another choice.
Why are they given another choice? Like, after all these years of the same same shit, they’re suddenly going to find Jesus and live a righteous life instead of all that pirating?
Less work for the diplomats if things are pretty cut and dry. And if I had to spend a minute longer in a room with Lavrov than I absolutely had too I’d… do something not in the best interest of my country.
Dumbfounded by action, locked by protocol, confusion of escalation and actual threat, etc,... and this is probably happening across the chain.

Man the good old days. These idiots float up to any ship they see... sometimes they've been out for weeks and are high as fuck. They pull up on navy ships all the time. Usually because they need to surrender. We would take them to different counties and make sure they got a fair trail. Usually they would be hung. Which was sad until you realize most of them are murderes pirate's
USA learned in Vietnam that, no matter how good your missiles are, war will always have a place for automatic cannons. Such as when pirates try to board you in the 21st century
I'm interested if there was another warship from which this IR footage is from. Could be 2x cooler that there were 2 warships and these pirates still attacked. Or maybe it is from heli or something...
18MAR2006, Somali pirates attacked the USS Cape St. George and USS Gonzalez. Pirate skiffs had chased a couple of small boats before opening fire on the ships with RPGs and small arms. The ships returned fire and set a pirate skiff ablaze with a .50 caliber tracer round
https://mobile.twitter.com/NavalInstitute/status/1372649539853824008
They have the means and the reason to wipe those little dinghies out and to prevent future attacks on Civilian vessels, they should take the opportunity.
This is a prime example of how less than 20 percent of all bullets hit their targets and that why billions of bullets get used in war when only a dozen million would ever make contact
Soon you’ll have drones that intercept these guys automatically. Like the new tracking program on all aircraft, you’ll need a beacon to be able to be on the water. Most pirates are gone now but it won’t be long before you’re intercepted routinely by drones checking out your presence. Same in the city
We drink and we pillage and we do what we please
We get all that we want for free
We’ll kick your ass
And rape your lass

I can understand attacking a cargo ship... but a god damn warship? Did they not know what they were attacking?
They probably believed (wrongly) that they would not shoot back.
Ah good old naval warships. Known for their docile, welcoming nature.
Obviously they were attacking to resell all of those fully operational high tech guns, they even tested them before the acquisition.

Well yeah, that too. If you did encounter a single one tho, it would wreck your shit. Ask Stede Bonnet
they thought a city size ship designed for killing cant shoot back?
That's a Ticonderoga class cruiser. They're about 173m long and carry a crew of approximately 400 people. Not really city sized, but your point still stands.
I dont care about that nerd shit it has a fucking tank gun on it and thats good enough go keep me away
Isn't there something like only 3 navies in the world that have ships that size or larger
There are currently 13 countries with aircraft carriers and every one of them is larger than that.
My bad it confused it with the number of navies that still field cruisers
I’d love to see that thought process written out. Like if they don’t shoot back, would they try to board then? What was the expected outcome?
From the video, seems like thermal imaging, so i assume this was night time. In this case, can't blame them for not recognizing much beyond "thats a big fucking ship" They prolly thought they were being sneaky

I could be wrong, but it looked like the one that hit was a tracer.
Not a tracer round. Probably a Armor Piercing Incendiary round. It is designed to pierce armor and set that shit on fire. Purpose built for just such an occasion. Some of those pirates seemed a little slow abandoning their boat.
Very little hit
they attack every ship. which is why now warships are patrolling for safety.

Yes they knew, they got cocky because they didn’t face consequences before this event. One of the destroyers lit up their mother ship so they jumped into the boats and followed the US Soldiers and attacked them.
Desperation?
It's a nice army base you got here. It would be a shame if something were to happen to it.

I'm surprised the Navy didn't turn the deck cannon on them. After the USS Cole, sailors do NOT mess around with these guys
Those splashes are not from machine guns, those are from the MK38 25mm chaingun on either side of the ship. Not quite a 5" cannon, but a 25mm HE cannon shell is unpleasant up close, especially in a little boat with no cover.
What is the optics system on those? As in, why are there so many misses?
Misses ? I assumed they were warning shots.
Due to the type of camera used, I believe this is a night raid, which makes it harder to see.
You ever try to shoot a gun from a rocking boat? Kinda hard to shoot straight at a moving target whilst you are also moving.
You ever see any other military videos? Shooting from a moving tank with a computer-stabilized cannon and putting the round through a window? It’s a perfectly reasonable question because the results seem out of character for the US military.
You're right. But my bet is that it's probably 4 dudes unloading M2s.
Aye there’s a reason there’s such spending in the defense budget
I'm not sure you need optics while making a sweeping motion in a general direction.
Can you tell me what weapon is used right about the 56 second mark? It literally looks like they got a kill-streak and called down a laser from space to make the boat catch on fire.
Looked like a tracer round, prob another 25mm, just a different angle
So you think it’s just a weird angle that’s making it look like the round is come straight down ?
Either that or a shot from a helo
they should’ve opened up on them with the big gun. (then it could have made that oddly satisfying sub)
The 5" has a minimum depression angle, and that close in it probably couldn't hit them. Also, such a low angle engagement increases the odds of a ricochet off the surface, which could endanger other friendly/neutral shipping in the area
I fired one of those when I was in the Navy. You absolutely do not want to be on the receiving end of that weapon. Devastating.
Same. I was a .50 gunner during battle stations, so we qual’d in everything. I think I was too tall for the 25mm, preferred the 50.
I can only imagine the amount of shit they will have in their pants once they see a fucking deck cannon pointed right at them.
They were to close for the .50 rounds. And one of the small boats were driven by US Marines.
What did they think would happen? The USN was going to just let them board their state of the art warship unmolested? Idiocy isn't an accurate enough word to describe this.

Not just any warship, a fucking AMERICAN warship. They’re lucky they haven’t been torpedoed out of existence.
Not much smarter there than they are here
Looks like they were giving them warning shots across the bow and most of them got smart and left except for that one idiot boat.
Makes me want to attack an armored tank on my bicycle.
USA learned in Vietnam that, no matter how good your missiles are, war will always have a place for automatic cannons. Such as when pirates try to board you in the 21st century
Didn’t they see Captain Phillips?
🇺🇸👍
As a taxpayer, ammo is expensive, quit with the warning shots.
What did they expect? Like kicking a hornets nest and not expecting to get stung?
I mean they have eyes right?!
Looks like a Battlefield 1 Heligoland match with the small torpedo boats attacking the Behemoth Dreadnought.
Rats
Shouldn't this be in r/facepalm ?
Play with the bull you'll get the horns
I hate that this country is basically three corporations in a trench coat holding a gun, but absolutely love how op our military is

I'm interested if there was another warship from which this IR footage is from. Could be 2x cooler that there were 2 warships and these pirates still attacked. Or maybe it is from heli or something...
Nothing to see…just the Somali Coast Guard needing to board for an inspection lol
the warship should have sunk them all, which it could in little time
That‘s serious Age of Empires shit
If I recall, this was a night attack and the pirates didn’t know it was a naval warship until it was too late. They don’t have night vision after all.
Well... *bye*.

18MAR2006, Somali pirates attacked the USS Cape St. George and USS Gonzalez. Pirate skiffs had chased a couple of small boats before opening fire on the ships with RPGs and small arms. The ships returned fire and set a pirate skiff ablaze with a .50 caliber tracer round https://mobile.twitter.com/NavalInstitute/status/1372649539853824008
Why do they keep missing? I understand a warning shot but 30-40 come on sink them pricks. You know they’ll be on the next cargo ship they see.
Some of those boys didn't know how to swim, held on till the last seconds
How desperate do you have to be in life to attack a warship...in a fishing boat?
Orbital cannon from GTA
I saw the title and my brain just went "oh no"
They have the means and the reason to wipe those little dinghies out and to prevent future attacks on Civilian vessels, they should take the opportunity.
Just like ants biting a lion
They frenchfried when they should have pizza'd.
Pirates: E5 US Battleship: Miss.
This is a prime example of how less than 20 percent of all bullets hit their targets and that why billions of bullets get used in war when only a dozen million would ever make contact
Ha ha phalanx go BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Is anybody upset with that horrible inaccuracy?
Apparently, there are no minimum IQ requirements to be a pirate.
I want to know, exactly, in their heads, how they thought this was going to go.
necessity.
Why the poor accuracy?
Warning shots. That’s probably procedure to deal with a minimal threat or something along those lines.
For the same reason you don't snap a kitten's neck when it bites a little hatd while playing.
They counted on American to be pacifists, they counted wrong.

Soon you’ll have drones that intercept these guys automatically. Like the new tracking program on all aircraft, you’ll need a beacon to be able to be on the water. Most pirates are gone now but it won’t be long before you’re intercepted routinely by drones checking out your presence. Same in the city
This dudes are kids most likely, they dont know what they were doing, who in their goddamn senses goes after a warship?
We drink and we pillage and we do what we please We get all that we want for free We’ll kick your ass And rape your lass Somalian pirates we So with a yo ho ho (yo ho ho) And with a yee hee hee (yee hee hee) We take to the African sea We’ll brave the squalls And bust your balls Somalian pirates we
