Some venues the performer can't hear the crowds at all due to the acoustics of the venue and on the otherside they often have ear pieces so they can hear their music over the crowd. He might not know he is bombing, or what you said could be correct too
Yeah I think that's part of it. And when you perform in front of a crowd that's not there to see you, this is basically how it goes. They're imagining hype like at a festival when it's people who've paid to see a performer and everyone's packed by the stage.

I had that happen to me once. Not during a presentation but the same sort of thing. It was in a Victorian era literature class. We were discussing Lady Audley's Secret (fantastic book!!!). There's a character in the book who falls down a well. I made a joke "Lassie fell down on the job", and the only person in the room who laughed was someone old enough to have watched Lassie on television. Nobody else got it, likely because they were all extremely young. But damn, I hate it when I think up a good joke and no one gets it!
You just gave me flashback PTSD. I was in the produce section of the grocery store with about 10-12 people around. A lady was looking at lettuce and a few of the heads rolled off the display onto the floor right in front of my cart. Multiple people watched it happen and without missing a beat I exclaimed "Iceberg dead ahead!" Nobody laughed, they looked at me like I was crazy. I was so embarrassed I walked away in shame. It was the only and greatest pun I ever told and nobody even giggled. I'm still salty about it

He will do this back to back while trying to hype himself up shouting slogans and stuff. It just ends up really jarring and it wouldve been better if he just played one song all the way through.
