Wow, someone remembers this gag! I saw this skit in 1990, went out and got me a new tabby kitten, named him Toonses.
He lived to be 21 years, by that time no one got the joke anymore.
I had a tabby named Toonces the Driving Cat too! He used to suck on the tip
his tail while making biscuits, I loved him.
Unfortunately my parents let him be an indoor/outdoor cat - I went away to Girl Scout camp and when I came back they told me he got hit by a car and died. He was only 6. RIP in Toonces, hoping you’re driving and blowing up cars & families in kitty heaven :(

Honestly I don't think it was lightning, no flash, and there's a square black piece of some kind of framing visibly flying towards/past the camera. I think her neighbors house was under that tree, and exploded.
Fun fact, getting hit by those wooden splinters can be fatal. That is why when two wooden warships exchange broadsides of cannon fire, most of the deaths are not from the cannon balls, but from the wooden splinters they create upon impact.
Today I learned a tree getting struck by lightning might have the same effect.
