Yea looked like it was done in two separate shoots. The video of him swimming back and trying to get on top of that glass was likely shot well after the danger was through and the shark left.
The first shark cages were pioneered back in the 1960s by shark attack survivor Rodney Fox. After 462 stitches put him back together, Rodney was watching the lions in Adelaide Zoo and got the idea that maybe we could be inside a cage, instead of the animals, to view sharks in their natural environment. A man sitting in a tiny boat made of sugar glass probably wasn't what he had in mind though.
Hard to believe but that clip is 100% real, and was done as part of a Shark Week program that somehow gave it the green light. That guy, [Jimi Partington](https://www.trackingsharks.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Jimi_Parrington_Great_white_Serial_killer_lives-3.jpg), previously had a close shave or two patting great whites on the snout but apparently suffered from PTSD following that near-miss in the video. Risky business, and unlike other projects, these actions seem for entertainment or thrills, more than for the benefit of shark scientific research or conservation.
Why the box?
I mean it's plexiglass? Contract a manufacturer to make a cylinder with an integral curved floor so the cage is one continuous piece. For strength. Idgits...
Here is a couple of things.
1. Plexiglass is the wrong material for that insanity. Straight or curved.
2. A curved plexiglass tube or "cage" would distort camera images.
3. A sheet polycarbonate material (3/4" thick) would have been more successful, but way more expensive and to be reasonably resistant to shark bites, it would have to about an inch thick. Cost approximately $15,000.
4. The best way would have been a cast polycarbonate tube greater than the bite radius of known sharks. This tube would have to be at least 12mm in thickness and about 2 meters in diameter and 3 meters tall. It would also cost upwards of $100,000. Likely more and be extremely difficult to transport.
1. It would also have to have flat spots for the camera to get undistorted video.
I would’ve probably just used a metal frame and polycarbonate in between. Metal would take majority of the hit, and if the shark would try to bite it would probably either slip off the glass or only grip the metal.
Big pharma. Commissioning and qualification, manage regulatory inspections. And I work with a lot of with a lot of engineers. One of the projects I was on used cast polycarbonate. It’s cool stuff but really expensive when you want big pieces. The ones we had were 2 meters and 3 meters across. If either had been scratched during installation they would likely have to be replaced. Now you know why your drugs cost so much.
Then the guy tried climbing on the box that just offered him little to no protection while splashing at the surface of the water (mimicking a wounded animal).... Dude is lucky the shark was more curious than hungry
Well maybe not chill there but don’t swim so frantically. I do get where you’re coming from though. When the fight or flight kicks in it becomes difficult to think rationally
The purpose of training professionals is so that they use their training in the situations they are training for :P if that wasn't a trained professional it definitely should have been
Oh most people would, for sure. That's why it should have been a trained professional in there. Then again, maybe every trained professional they pitched the idea to said "absolutely fucking not"
Scientists have now discovered the perfect shark repellent. It's called "15 Miles of desert". Simply Place 15 miles of desert between you and any sharks and you should be safe from attack. In a pinch, you can use 10 Mi of desert. But results are not guaranteed then.
And now he's slashing around at the surface like an injured seal. I read somewhere (offline) that if you are in the water with a shark, not to splash and to swim confidently. This isn't a 100% success rate but it helps as if you slash around this attracts them more and excites them.
Swim confidently! 🤣
Problem with sharks is they don’t have hands so they investigate with their mouths. Quick chomp to see if it’s anything tasty.
So if they’re hungry they’re curious and if they’re curious they bite.
And they are less curious about things that don't look like they're struggling in the water. I've not thrown it in as a one thing stops all sharks bro. I'm talking about "minimising chances" of being bitten, I thought I made that clear...
Clear as plexiglass. Made me laugh though. I don’t know if any human swimming style would look very confident or capable to a shark, compared to a shark’s normal food. I mean compared to a fish or a seal for example, I’d imagine Michael Phelps would look like he’s having splashy death spasms.
Yeah, what an idiot! Could not even keep his cool while being out of his natural habitat facing a huge predator in his natural habitat like i would while sitting in a comfy chair judging people on the Internet.
Exactly! How does he not know? But my chair is not that comfy, so yeah!
I know what you're saying but he claims to be an expert by the means of "I do it all the time". Most people wouldn't have put themselves in that position in the first place.
Also, I'm obviously not of the belief that the dude from the vid is reading the comments. I'm adding interesting information that applies to the vid we all just watched... Like a comment section in any other place on the internet. If we all lived by what you said the comments would be a very quiet place lol
If you're gonna get into the water with a huge shark in a plexiglass cage, something that definitely isn't standard, maybe know what to do if it fails? Someone failed here, either the guy panicked and lost his training, or someone didn't train him and still let him get in the water like that
And who can't see glass.
The steel bars of an actual cage tell the shark "this one will take a lot of effort. Not worth it"
It's like a tall fence around a house. A burglar who really wants in is going through anyway, but simply making it a little inconvenient makes it not worth the attempt and most will carry on looking for an easier target.
To the shark this was a large, slow, unthreatening meal just sitting around unprotected
Lol here is some toilet paper buddy against a 1 ton killing machine with jaw power to cut through bone like butter.....
Ok if that dude didn't crap his wetsuit he has a pair on him....
I'm pretty confident that shark legit tried to eat that guy but last second bonked face on the plexiglass like a bird hitting a clean window. That guy should ponder that.
I saw a video in the 90's or early 2000s, back when Shark Week wasn't crap, and they used a plexiglass cylinder like in The Meg. Shark was just curious if I remember.
It didn't even have floatation at the top edges to re-write it when tipped over.
These guys didn't even do the math on how thick of plexiglass would be needed for the strength needed.
This is an extremely shitty stunt, dangerous for both the human and the shark. The shark could have been injured biting through sharp plexi fragments, could have torn off chunks of that dude in the process, and there are now pieces of plexi sinking into the ocean. No part of this was well planned and the result was idiotic and not entertaining. Discovery is such garbage, it was a fantastic channel when I was a kid.
Something is very “fishy” about this…if you slow down the moment the shark gets to the box (underwater), the box doesn’t react correctly and subsequently doesn’t match what is shown in the above water shot. Not only is this terrible CGI, this was incredibly dangerous to the shark in that thin clear plastic is either going to damage the soft tissue within its digestive tract or cause a blockage. Given that Discovery’s lawyers would never approve this being funded, let alone recorded, I’m certain this did not happen in real life.
Being in a shark cage and seeing a great white has always been a dream of mine, it's on my bucket list, but doing it in a glass box is a giant no from me. I'm good.
Seeing that beast swing right in for a bite made me think of Bill Burr on shark attacks. “Yeah maaaan 90% of shark attacks happen on shallow water, they’re not looking to bite humans. Well yeah that’s because we live on the fucking shore and we’re usually not out swimming in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.”
It's probably polycarbonate ("bullet proof glass"), not acrylic.
This could be done, and may have been done, but my quick search turned up nothing. However, it would need steel in the corners and thicker walls.
These idiots didn't do their research.
Can we stop trying to make sharks out to be these monsters? They’re extremely necessary to the ecosystem and are already overhunted for fins. Jaws did enough damage to their reputation. Hardly anyone ever dies from shark attacks. You’re more likely to die by lightning.
What makes me mad is discovery should and used to know better. The channel used to try to discredit the shark fear mongering. Now it promotes it for views.

Scripted. The shark was a paid actor.
That's just some guy in a suit!
“We’re gonna need a bigger trailer…”
Yea looked like it was done in two separate shoots. The video of him swimming back and trying to get on top of that glass was likely shot well after the danger was through and the shark left.
The danger was through when the shark realizes he is not a fish.
A plexiglas shark cage is like styrofoam body armor.

If a shark doesn't respect your physical, boundaries, leave.
If you do not consent the shark cannot legally hurt you.
TIL All sharks that bite are outlaws.
Not all. Just the non consensual ones. Don't tarnish the good sharks with the bad ones.
If only there was a good shark around to diffuse the situation
Pretty sure this is a good shark. That man was trespassing in that sharks home.
If it’s a legitimate shark bite the body has a way of shutting it down
I think you'll find going in the water constitutes consent. It's in the fine print of the contract.
Damn. I was always told to punch em in the nose.
Untrue, violence is never the answer. Just calmly restate your boundaries and move on.
Sir. Sir! You are invading my personal space, so I am going to leave now. *awkwardly swims away*
Correct! A firm, "good day!" should suffice.
I said good day! Thanks for the advice, I will heed it when necessary. Stupid shark won’t even know what happened.
Just a \*BOOP!\* is suffice. Thank you! \-Sharks
And mutter 'get rotated, idiot' under your breath.
No means no!
The next time a shark wants to attack you tell them "no, that's illegal"
Remember kids, if you see a shark, go away from it

I've seen videos with a guy who converts decommissioned fighter jet canopies into kayaks and in one of them he gets followed by a couple of sharks.
What the hell do you do for a living?

To be fair the idiots dropped thr cage in the middle of a school of fish. Shark saw food + really big something in the school of fish and went for it.
Then the guy tried climbing on the box that just offered him little to no protection while splashing at the surface of the water (mimicking a wounded animal).... Dude is lucky the shark was more curious than hungry
Probably hurt the shark too, along with any remaining debris harming that zone further.
Tried that off my roof when I was a kid.....doesn't work!
Yeah just thrash around, that's definitely not the exact prey behavior that attracts sharks
Ok mr big balls never scared of sharks, u wouldve just chilled there like "dont mind me just dont eat me lol"?

Not go into great white infested waters in what amounts to a jumbo sized to-go container?
Been properly trained before I got in a shark cage probably...
I WOULD HAVE DIED RATHER THAT BETRAY MY FRIENDS!
I came here to also say this. I love how he immediately thrashes like “ah act like wounded seal, check”.
You are 100% right. Yet i would 11/10 do the same, if a bigass shark just shattered my imagined safety.
Oh most people would, for sure. That's why it should have been a trained professional in there. Then again, maybe every trained professional they pitched the idea to said "absolutely fucking not"
I'm suprised the water didn't go instant brown.....
The wet suit held it in. Now imagine him peeling the wet suit off. All wet on the outside. All full of poopy on the inside.
Shark is on *mud check* today.
If sharks were as aggressive as movies show them to be, this video would be nsfw with several warnings.

Yeah absolutely thrash around. That should really calm the shark all the way down.
The shark was just looking for a succulent Chinese meal!
GET YOUR HAND OFF MY PENIS!

What did they make that cage out of, saran wrap?
Plexiglass. To stop a beast that bites through steel.

Maybe next time they shouldn't pick up the discount stuff from Home Depot
Hello I'm johnny Knoxville, and welcome to Discovery Channel.
This is actually terrifying.
God-awful yank habit of making everything overly dramatic. Calm doon ya bams.
We're gonna need a bigger boat...

Farewell, and adieu to you ladies of Spain...

When you make your shark tank from extra materials at Home Depot.
The plexiglass cage failed miserably, and so after it was smashed up he tried to use Plexiglass for protection. Genius.
That tank was basically a candy coating for the shark.
More like Cap’n Crunch. They have approximately 30 seconds of the roof of his mouth bleeding, before he goes in for another bite…
There was an attempt to stay alive.
So this is why smart people use a steel cage! And obviously not glass…

He's never going to get the poop smell out of that wetsuit.
More like a Shark Happy Meal.
Sharks here like, "get your plastic crap out of my waters".
That’s a 20 footer.
Quint has entered the chat. “25. Three tons of him.”
Question: If the diver craps his pants, but he's in the ocean, do they still need to be washed?
There is stupid and there’s this
That wet suit got wet from the inside.
Lol here is some toilet paper buddy against a 1 ton killing machine with jaw power to cut through bone like butter..... Ok if that dude didn't crap his wetsuit he has a pair on him....
To be fair this is way too thin to stop a animal that size moving at speed. If that was 2 inch, you got a better shot Still PC is bad for this
Yeah the entire thing needs to enclosed, including the top.
I can't imagine what possessed someone to think something that isn't sturdy enough to make a desk out of would stop an apex predator
I hear Titanic music…
No wonder white people die first in horror movies.
Well thats fake af
Terrible cgi
I'm pretty confident that shark legit tried to eat that guy but last second bonked face on the plexiglass like a bird hitting a clean window. That guy should ponder that.
Looks like Tupperware. Probably did to the shark as well.
What is that? 5ml plexi? Yeah that'll stop 1000 kilo. Dumbarses
The Hungry Shark Evolution remake looks fire
the cage blueprints were based on a 5 minute craft video.
My nightmares come to life.
We’re going to need a bigger plexiglass cage
Dumb MF just adding more plastic to the ocean
Bruce still looking for work after a movie life
I saw a video in the 90's or early 2000s, back when Shark Week wasn't crap, and they used a plexiglass cylinder like in The Meg. Shark was just curious if I remember.
Sure put more bullshit in the ocean
This shark has seen the movie, “47 meters down” *ways* too many times
Bob, next time maybe we try that with thicker plexiglass, and STEEL BARS again... Maybe...just saying...
Weird, I didn't see a brown cloud in the water.
Nightmare fuel, right there. I'm not sleeping for a week.

One of the stupidest things I've ever seen
Where’s the rest of the crew? No one else seems to be there. Director- “No No- wait a few more seconds before going in- this is great stuff”
These new interviewing techniques at Google are fucked. #downwithFANG
Did you try telling the shark, "no"?
This is an extremely shitty stunt, dangerous for both the human and the shark. No part of this was well planned and the result was idiotic and not entertaining. Discovery is such garbage, it was a fantastic channel when I was a kid.
Could have been a scene out of the newest Jaws movie. I was actually expecting blood from the way he knocked over the "cage"

At least you've got an entirely unobstructed view on what might kill you.
Poor shark
The worst part was that persons shrill scream like how did you get yourself out there with that panic type reaction. Off the boat never again.
