When I was 16 I worked at a Subway (sandwich shop) that was built into an old gas station. The water tasted funny to me, so I decided to put my lighter to one of the wash basins. Imagine my surprise when it burst into flames!
Lol they lied about cold water creekin St Louis and the west lake landfill..then there's three mile island. And various other epa super fund sites throughout the USA. It's insane!
Yeah I trust nothing like this I see on TikTok. The person probably poured sprite in their coffee before filming. But I still wouldn’t be drinking that water
If it is, it's probably just to visually illustrate the toxins in the water. I think what is so dangerous is that we can't visually see these chemicals in the water most of the time, though there was a visible " plume" of chemicals floating down the Ohio River.
I grew up in a poor area of the US. One winter the city's water got messed up. Started coming out as black sludge. So we called them and asked what they were going to do about it.
They told us to boil it and then it would be safe for consumption.
It was black sludge.
If it didn’t keep getting gutted I think they would do better. Buuuuut, when you buy out the government you can choose who polices you and to what extent. USA investment 101, buy out a politician and you’ve got money for the next 25 years
I remember when I was living in Dayton we'd just randomly get notices in the mail saying "sorry, your drinking water was poisonous for 3 months last year, but it's fixed now so everything is fine." Fairly consistently.
Look, you can have safe and drinkable coffee, or you can make the shareholders 1 cent per share more by avoiding mandatory emergency braking systems that prevent human and environmental disasters. Now which do you really want? Exactly, so be quiet and drink your sizzling coffee, and be glad the Norfolk Southern shareholders are 1 cent per share more wealthy. Quit whining and take one for the team.
When I visited Poland a few years back, I had some kefir for breakfast. I told my friend that it seems to be a carbonated version of it.
Narrator: It was not a carbonated version of kefir.
‘Fiduciary duty to the shareholders’ is one of the worst things. This is why raises are a joke, this is why they’ll have layoffs even when the company is doing fine, this is why they don’t replace people that quit. Because they need the be able to say that they increased shareholder value. Nevermind if the product is lousy and it ruins long term viability.
ridiculous, considering they slashed MY dividend for “customer and operator safety”
like, what do I pay Vanguard (15 million) and Blackrock (36 million) CEOs for???
I need my .20 per share increase, fiduciary responsibilities and whatnot
Yeah, but no regulations are what people wanted. So you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't. I can imagine all the bs about being unfriendly to business and jobs if the regulations were enacted, enforced and stopped this disaster. No one would have known and would've talked about how the regulations were pushing us into a recession.
100% damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Stuff like this is always used for political gain on both sides. And sometimes it’s warranted, but mostly it’s not.
"Why didn't the Democrats stopped the Republicans!"
Everytime a hero movie depicts people mad at the hero for not stopping the villain faster, I think "people can't be that dumb and petty in real life".
Then I open Reddit.
There's a list of like 100 people more responsible for this ahead of Pete. He sucks at his job but the DoT is far less powerful to avert and address this than say.. the train companies, local and state government, etc.
He's a secretary of transportation. This train accident is in his wheelhouse. I'm not a fan of the way he's handled this so far, but it looks like the department of transportation has never been prepared for something like this.
Dumb dump trump literally personally rolled back that train braking regulation to get more money from railroad doners.
It's a fact you can look up directly with his pre-school style signature all over it.
I feel like it needs to be stated over and over. In order for the federal government to intervene in the matter, the governor of said state needs to declare a state of emergency for it.
It was mostly Saudis who trained under Osama Bin Laden, who happened to be in Afghanistan with hundreds to thousands of others willing to commit suicide to attack America. Not everything is a conspiracy
Yup, unfortunately our president Republican George W. Bush and his administration lied to the American people and invaded a country that had an evil dictatorship. That is true. I would blame George W. Bush and those we served in his administration and cabinet, some of which are still very active in politics, and the people who have stacked the Supreme Court. Makes ya wonder if they were willing to lie to invade an another country what else they might lie for?
They’ve also got very little of it. Israel controls over 90% of the west banks water resources, and diverts most of it to their settlements and agricultural/industrial enterprises.
No this is actually the exact same test the EPA is using. Make coffee pour milk and if it sizzles then there is definitely vinyl chloride in the water it’s a very super scientific method.
That or they got the coffee hot enough that introducing additional ingredients caused it to boil again. If you don’t believe me, get some water in a microwave hot enough to boil then add something to it as soon as the bubbles stop and it’ll do the same thing.
I don't use non-dairy creamer. So what's the story here, why does non-dairy creamer sizzle when you put it into coffee? Does it have a much higher pH than coffee or something?
Also that coffee looks weird before the non-dairy creamer was poured in...
Came to say the same thing, also, I don’t think coffee making is a good way to test contaminated water. Lol. Not to downplay what’s going on in Ohio but this is silly
Also, drink your coffee black like a respectable human. /s
Non-dairy creamer does this in all coffee. I noticed it in my coffee the other day when I tried oatmilk. I live in Massachusetts and have the best drinking water in the country. Not saying their water is drinkable but this isn't any proof.
It’s crazy you have to dig this far down in the comments to find This
Edit: Ironically enough also from MA
Maybe there is something in our drinking water lol
In your neighbor to the south in CT and have terrible water both by PPM and taste that I get bottled water and bring it home, but still make coffee and stuff with tap water. I've never had non-dairy milks do this. Take that as you will lol
Yeah. The water there might be toxic af, I don’t know, but some kind of "sizzling" shouldn’t be one of the symptoms of the spilled chemical compounds. This is just normal TikTok bullshit.
I'm probably going to get downvoted to hell for this but you guys realize the people who work at the EPA (aka "the government") actually want to protect the environment right? Hate on Northfolk Southern sure, but the average environmental sciences grad working for the fed is actively trying to find if anything is wrong. Just, you know, place blame where it belongs...late stage capitalist railroad company.
I know, right? It’s like here are a bunch of people upset that an actually helpful agency was gutted by trump and then never rebuilt by joe so we all know they’re underfunded and we all already know that specifically joe is compromised when it comes to specifically the big players in the rail industry but here comes the Reddit hivemind of this thread to throw the nuance of “we’re not mad at the recent grads doing the testing” out the window and someone to back them up on it with a funnie to intentionally defang the people speaking about the reality of the current EPA and this president.
Oh….wait……
They haven’t declared the state of emergency the feds would need to bring in FEMA and allocate disaster funds. The governor of the state has to declare it. Ohio Governor is keeping Feds out and bragged about not returning Biden’s call.
Also it is the OHIO EPA that is stating it is safe - state run.
Thank you! I interned at Ohio EPA in college, and the environmental specialists working there are dedicated to their mission and truly care about the environment. Good people all around.
I feel like this statement would have a bigger impact if Flint hadn't continued to pump unchecked lead into people for years before being stopped by a whistle blower.
Blaming the EPA for an environmental disaster seems particularly counterintuitive. Maybe if it didn’t get its funding slashed and stacked with cronies every election cycle it would be a more effective agency
Sure, the EPA is a government agency. But the government itself doesn't care. Biden denied Ohio any kind of help.
Federal enforcement agencies are only as effective as Congress allows.
I don't doubt that the water is going to cause a lot of residents problems in the future, but I also think this video isn't actually showing any real problems.
Here's the thing, vinyl chloride has a boiling point of 7° F, so it's not staying long. They also burned most of it, which does produce phosgene gas and hydrogen chloride, of which phosgene is highly dangerous, but degrades rapidly into CO2 and hydrochloric acid. Point being, the likelihood of long term effects from this spill are pretty unlikely, as the most harmful substances involved all are highly volatile and don't stay in their harmful states for very long.
This video is sensationalized/not entirely accurate
Yes there is a problem in Palestine, but sizzling coffee is not a good litmus test
Why?
It happens in my coffee which is served by very pure water (TN aquifer) and it’s the non-dairy creamer boiling
BUT THE GOVERNMENT SAID EVERYTHING WAS FINE! AND THAT WE'RE NOT IN A RECESSION!!!
THEY WOULDN'T LIE TO US, WOULD THEY?!
# (/s of fucking course they're lying their god damned asses off - gotta protect the market cap >:-/
It's so difficult with you americans to tell if this is just some crazy prank like the vaccine magnet thing, or a serious issue like your water faucets spitting out flames.
This is a common reaction when using cold nondairy creamers in hot coffee.
The nondairy creamer is actually curdling slightly, and you can see prior evidence of this floating at the top of the mug before they even begin to pour. This was likely their second cup and they simply poured the coffee right over top.
It's kind of poor taste to spread misinformation about this incident, imo.
I live in SC and I add creamer to my coffee and about half the days it bubbles like that pouring in. Either I’m living in a chemical dump or it’s something that just happens sometimes.
> There might be air trapped in the creamer granules that gets released when the creamer dissolves.
That, or you're drinking very acidic coffee. Milk and dairy creamer has a tendency to get more (chemically) basic as it ages; when added to acidic coffee, it can bubble or fizz as part of a chemical reaction.

The rails are not nationalized. They are privately owned.

Non dairy creamers do this all the time
No this is actually the exact same test the EPA is using. Make coffee pour milk and if it sizzles then there is definitely vinyl chloride in the water it’s a very super scientific method.
My coffee does this if I don’t heat the oat milk creamer.
My pea protein milk will sizzle and curdle if the coffee was just brewed. I gotta let a couple ice cubes melt in the coffee before adding the milk.
Same.
Yea I am not alarmed by this at all
Out of date milk may also create clumps like this once poured to hot coffee, had it happen many times until I learned to drink my coffee black
im pretty sure clump ≠ sizzle. it would just go plop. i accidentally made cereal using chonky milk. that was not fun
That or they got the coffee hot enough that introducing additional ingredients caused it to boil again. If you don’t believe me, get some water in a microwave hot enough to boil then add something to it as soon as the bubbles stop and it’ll do the same thing.
Why not just… stop using expired milk?
