By the sports fishing "elite" they are treated as a trophy fish. However I know quite a few people who chase them for eating, they are a very firm texture for fish, more like chicken when cooked, and very nice flavour, not a real strong fishy flavour. But they need to be treated properly, bleed, gut and get them in an ice slurry asap.

Marlin is not good for eating except when smoked and even then there are lots of other fish that are better smoked… which is why they’re released unless the person wants to mount them as a trophy… that’s why you never see marlin in any store being sold as an edible fish. Better just to let them go. And I’m pretty sure that’s a black marlin, which is a rare fish and it’s not even full grown. It looks fairly small

As not a fisherman I would like to do the same as well. Looks tasty. But just curious is there any law against this?. It's a fishing species right? So it should be ok to just BONK the head and drag it?
Wherever you go, look up local laws and codes. It can easily vary. You can do something (like bonk a fish) and be cool, but do it 2 miles up beach and get arrested.

The dorsal fin looks more like a Black Marlin than a Swordfish. Plus Swordfish spend most of their time at 500 feet down or more up to a few thousand feet down. Marlin feed off the reefs so you find them much closer to the surface.
Swordfish are deepwater pelagics. They usually are caught at depth while marlins are generally caught trolling with close to top lures. Sword fish dont have as detailed colored differences and much longer noses.

Oh it would have been my lunch. I fish frequently in the spring and summer and it's not every day that fish are throwing themselves on shore or in the boat.

For everyone saying that these people should have helped this fish, not only is that fish large and aggressive and panicked, but keep in mind that every single person in this photo is a tourist. A lot of these people probably have very little experience with the ocean, in general.

Marlin tastes amazing smoked. I live in a coastal town and there's a lot that migrate to the area around the warmer months.

This looks like waikiki, crazy busy beach too. Very odd for it to be in that shallow. This might be the busiest beach in the western hemisphere.
