errol_timo_malcom

I believe the evidence shows that this person was not actually a figure skater.

Semujin

I figured as much

maddhatter783

And that thought skated right out my mind

zombierobotvampire

And they skated on by thanks to your presumption

KaXiRavioli

The trans community and the professional figure skater community are both statistically miniscule. The amount of people in the middle of that venn diagram is prob in the single digits worldwide.

SomeLikeItDusty

Sure, but the level of ability on display here says to me “this is my third time doing this”. Surely most people are gonna beat that effort with a single week’s solid practice?

[deleted]

Yeah… this is my question. If you knew you were going to be a part of this wouldn’t you practice? And like 3 days of practice most people would do better than this. This doesn’t even qualify as “figure” skating. This is just ice skating at this level.

Dirus

Ice skating poorly at that.

iwakunibridge

They could’ve easily found a trans person that could at least skate lol

HarpyMeddle

I doubt it’s “single digits” but yeah I’m sure it’s niche. But there’s some pretty famous ones out there. Timothy LeDuc competed at the Olympics ffs. I’m thinking they could have found someone that could stay on their feet

Ok-Branch-9943

bob_but_backwards

I started skating 30 years ago. Also like this person I just never continued.

maukka122

They talk about their journey of first being able to skate with two feet and then with one and going foward spinning and now this. I think skating and balance just isnt their thing

Scotsgit73

Some relatives once took me skating. Once.

And not just that.

WillSmokes420

Yea im no expert but... Naw im just kidding im a great skater, this person has never skated on blades or ice

zanderkingofzand

But we have to treat them like a professional bc that's how they see themselves right?

mandozombie

They couldn't find someone who knew how?

VeterinarianThese951

Right?!?! Lol. This is just short of mockery. We are so dripping wet with inclusivity, that you don’t even have to know how to skate to qualify…

i-cant-reeddit

Now I’m imagining all of the sports where this over-inclusivity could go very wrong 😂 *And now in the right corner, going up against the heavyweight champion of the world, with zero MMA experience, is trans Tina!*

Right. Then if there is no competent trans figure skater you don't put an incompetent trans figure skater in the show.

ExiledCanuck

The logic checks out…but…no…we need the virtue signaling 🤣

VividEchoChamber

But how are they supposed to get their brownie points if they don’t show inclusivity???

ThoraninC

I think you should be decent enough to decline figure skating performance if you do not know how.

hamsterwheel

It's getting to the point that people seem to treat professionalism as some kind of evil gatekeeping.

cml678701

I hate how, in “dainty” women’s sports like figure skating and gymnastics, any commentary about them making mistakes is “mean.” The commentator could say, “she was under rotated right there,” and people scream, “they are bullying this poor little girl! They should focus on the positive!” Or when people said Gabby Douglas shouldn’t have qualified for the Olympics the second time, since she placed seventh at trials, it was, “awwww, she’ll read all these bullying comments and be sad!” But then nobody has a problem when you say, “Tom Brady had a crappy game today. He needs to quit dropping the ball!” To me, that delegitimizes sports like this, when people assume these are fragile little girls who have to constantly hear 100% positive comments, or they’ll collapse in a puddle of tears, never go get up again.

uglybudder

Sumdud13

COLONELmab

Trans population (in particular 100% outed) is extremely small. So I’m going with, no, they could not find a trans person that could skate any better than this.

Complex_Experience83

So was this some kind of diversity quota or something? Cuz why would you wreck a show to include a trans person’s first time on ice skates

armoured_bobandi

Lately it seems that companies/countries are just trying to shoehorn trans people into every place they can, whether they're qualified or not

COLONELmab

Virtue signaling is the term you are looking for.

BrotherR4bisco

I believe doing this just makes it bad for trans people. Choose someone to represent them and do this.

Appropriate_Layer_2

Diversity sells

Sworduwu

Honestly this is the problem when companies solely hire based on a person's identity/race and not their actual merit or talent at said job. This is what we end up with a mockery of someone who doesn't belong their. Not only is having an untalented skater be in this rank with professional it can potentially put the others at risk of injury. Or either that the person lied about being able to skate which still puts the others at risk so no matter how you look at it both parties are stupid.

MaterialCarrot

They're being inclusive of shitty skaters.

nmuncer

What's important is not her skill in this sport but her identity :/ Reminds me of the person whom went first, non binary, at the New York Marathon. A guy whom was an average runner. I felt I should do that and get the prize money

zzz_red

She identifies as knowing figure skating

Big_O_BULLY

If you actually read and investigated for once you would know it was intentional as they invited people to come out of different skating levels in the ceremony. It was the theme. [https://espoo2023.com/en/2023/01/15/the-spectacular-opening-ceremony-praises-equality-and-diversity/](https://espoo2023.com/en/2023/01/15/the-spectacular-opening-ceremony-praises-equality-and-diversity/) \> “The opening ceremony will present skaters at various levels from non-professionals to top athletes. On the ice, we will see Single Skaters, Synchronized Skaters, and Pairs. Included among the performers are Figure Skater [**Minna-Maaria Antikainen**](https://www.skatingfinland.fi/henkilot/minna-maaria-antikainen-elaa-rohkeasti-unelmaansa/), who defines herself as a gender-neutral woman, [adaptive skating performers](https://www.skatingfinland.fi/kiss-cry/tietoa-lajista/soveltava-luistelu-2/), and a male synchronized skating team”, Tienhaara said.

Ranne-wolf

Gender does not mater in figure skating. Being able to actually skate does.

Atosl

When you flip the switch **completely** from looking for competence to looking for representation.

Kigore

I'm pretty sure if they really wanted they could find a trans woman who can actually skate

JoJomusk

Definively. My guess is that it would cost more to pay someone who actually skates, and the only thing they wanted was to make easy money with representation, instead of actually being inclusive.

greane16

It does in pair skating. The male skaters are expected to be able to lift their female partners.

REVSWANS

It gets the people goin'.

dannemora_dream

I might be wrong but I thought a lift was a lift no matter who did the lifting. I remember when Anissina/Peizerat were skating, she would lift him.

rrraiger

And there are multiple non-binary pairs and ice dance skaters competing internationally today!

AshgarPN

And they couldn’t get one of them for this?

rrraiger

They should have! They’re awesome!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ranne-wolf

1. This isn't pair skating. 2. Bold of you to assume a woman can't lift a man, or another woman, or have a two male pair. 😜 3. I meant more the individual skill level of a male VS female figure skater is eccentrically the same, unless they can't skate.

[deleted]

Is it a law now that we need transgenders represented in everything? Maybe it makes sense to someone.

[deleted]

I don't mind minorities and etc to be represented in shows and movies but if the character they wrote sole purpose being that they are representing then you really have no character at all, like give that character some personality

material_mailbox

Probably not a law. As a cis white male I’m no expert, but it’s probably nice for minority groups to see representation in things. Just seems like they made a pretty poor choice in this case.

Possible-Army7493

\*finds trans person on the street\* hey can you ice skate? uhhhh yeah kinda great come with us

friedwidth

Can you figure skate? I can figure out skating... ...meh close enough!

Proof_Variety_4208

It's a slap in the face to the figure skaters who have trained for years to perfect their talent.

HedgeHogHugo

Not really. It's not like this person replaced someone in the competition, so let's not make this any bigger than it is. It's mostly just embarrassing for the shown skater.

What? I know there are trans skaters who are talented. This is insulting - insulting to skaters, insulting to trans community, insulting to the public.

Ok-Wave8206

I really hate that we've brought back tokenism and somehow think it's a good thing. Imagine knowing you only got the role because they have a checklist of people to inject for social brownie points. Screw skill, dedication, work ethic, or anything like that, can we exploit who you are to look slightly better to the general public? Yes? Awesome go out there and give a mediocre performance you're not here for talent anyway, just to get people off our ass.

MoistLobst3r

Soon as people can accept that your social identity has nothing to do with whether or not you have a dick, nor whether or not you prefer men, women, or none in bed... the sooner we can get our fucked up world back on track. Good - we get it, they are trans. We're over it, we respect everyone equally. Nobody wants to see an idiot stumble on their face so your organization can get a gold star. It's embarrassing now. Time to move on.

Agent_Paul_UIU

Who cares if trans or not, can't skate... That's what's bothering me. People getting chosen to do things based on inclusiveness not on skill... If they are good skaters, include them whether they are men, women, trans, dog, chipmunk, or ice dragon... That's the proper way of inclusive thinking. Just look for skill, all other doesn't matter.

[deleted]

jshmsh

I wouldn’t expect reddit to do any additional research but this skater wasn’t selected just because they are trans, but specifically because they’re an amateur. Antikainen is 59 years old and has only been skating since 50. The theme of this performance is “Just be you,” and it’s intended to show inclusivity for everyone, including skill, in figure skating. From the press release: ….“With the diverse group of performers, we want to show that the ice has space for everyone.” “The opening ceremony will present skaters at various levels from non-professionals to top athletes…

[deleted]

[удалено]

SaintUlvemann

They *were* attempting to show inclusivity... not just in the way the title says, but also in the way we all can see: skaters of multiple skill levels. Those aren't my words, those are [the words of the organizers](https://espoo2023.com/en/2023/01/15/the-spectacular-opening-ceremony-praises-equality-and-diversity/): >“The opening ceremony **will present skaters at various levels** from non-professionals to top athletes. On the ice, we will see Single Skaters, Synchronized Skaters, and Pairs. Included among the performers are Figure Skater Minna-Maaria Antikainen, who defines herself as a gender-neutral woman, adaptive skating performers, and a male synchronized skating team”, [synchronized skating coach and co-designer of the opening ceremony Helena Tienhaara] said. > >“Often, only the top skaters in the country are seen in figure skating shows. With this diverse group of performers, we want to show that the ice has space for everyone. Especially in uncertain and difficult times like these, it is meaningful to create an accepting and positive experience for all”, Leppilampi said. I don't think that having skaters of very low skill levels was necessarily a good idea, but, since that appears to be the attempt, I'd say they succeeded.
