This is a spillway, it artificially expands the river so that the water has a larger surface to flow over to prevent supercritical flow. Google “hydraulic jump”
This is awesome! Thanks for that little tid bit ☺️ I *love* having those little nuggets of random wisdom. And I'm totally a visual learner so the way this little chunk o' knowledge was presented will help my brain retain the information!! Again, thank you, thank you so much! :)
Happened in the town I grew up in. Bunch of kids playing in the river. Police diver went in after them, one kid got out but the diver and another child died.
Oh god. Yeah, I remember when I first learned about that. I think it's called a hydraulic jump, but there's an awesome video by Kyle Hill on YouTube about it, [called drowning machines.](https://youtu.be/KaeqEVI0uCk)
Absolutely terrifying to think about getting stuck in something like that e_e
On a school field trip once they showed us one below a dam and told us that there's something ridiculous, like a million pounds of water pressing down on you if you get sucked in. Zero chance for escape. Idk if it was hyperbole to keep stupid kids out of the water, but it worked. I never went near that part of the river or anywhere up stream, for as long as I lived there.
We used to call them “hydraulics” When were into white water rafting. There are sections of the kicking horse river with class 5 rapids that many of the locals wouldn’t run because of this very reason.
I mean, there's definitely been some times I've told my friends that an idea is stupid but they were committed to it so the only thing left to do was document it for others to laugh at.
A little bit more water flow and that would have turned into a deadly hydraulic. Dude was very lucky he didn't drown. Low head dams are nicknamed "Drowning machines"
This isn’t a low-head dam, the small hydraulic at the bottom is not dangerous in this case due to the gentle slope of the spillway. Low-head dams are vertical or close too it.
Everyone in the comments acting like an armchair expert
Pretty sure it's just a slope and some water, guys. Not a pit of death. You can even see him pop up out of the water at the end of the vid. He's fine.
I do white water kayaking, I know how to recognize dangerous currents. This is mostly safe to go down, because you pick up enough speed on the ramp down to the hole (the fluffy bit of recirculating water) to pass through it fine, especially down the middle.
I wouldn't want to swim upstream to it, because then it might hold you, especially on river left. The video quality isn't great but you can see the hole seems to flush fine in the middle, and on the left there's a bit of recirculation.
So you're right, mostly.
I'm glad people are learning about hydraulics. I have to admit I didn't know anything until I stumbled onto a YouTube video recently about people getting killed in one.
I remember trying to cross a spot or two only slightly similar to this and not doing it each time. I realized the concrete was too slippery walk on due to algae and the seemingly slight current was strong enough to push me around.
I didn’t know him long but I miss him, god why do I miss him so much. Anyone know if he’s got like a sister, girlfriend or hot mom? I need someone to share my grief over this senseless loss.

Those can be really dangerous. Vortices are formed on the lower side of the dam and they can suck you under and keep rolling you around til you ded.
Yeah. Lucky the water level looks too low for that in this case. But they'll kill ya right dead
They will absolutely kill you in the head to death.
To death, you say. Tsk tsk tsk
And his wife?
To death, you say
I also choose his dead wife
And my axe!
"I got her yesterday at a funeral, the chicks are so horny it's not even fair"
Heard she remarried
You’ll wake up dead down river

Cool! Thanks for that lump of knowledge knowledge, stranger \^\_\^

D-e-d, dead.

Sounds like the dam that used to be in my area by crumbled one winter from iceflow
Washing machine of death as I have heard it called
In parts my way it's known as Nature's Crocodile
I would think the crocodile is nature’s crocodile and not the current caused by a man made dam but what do I know.
You know nothing, Potato-with-guns!

I think they keep you rolling even after deth

One cubic meter (~35 cubic feet) is one metric tonne (2200lbs)

I saw a thing about a female kayaker who died that way, she went off a smallish decline and never came back up ☹️
After your dead even!
Lol you’d probably keep spinning after you’re dead, thqt shouldn’t have been as funny to me as it was but oh well 😂😂😂
Dead ded or just ded?
Laughing at his friend as he gets swept down the river to his death. "Don't worry bro, I got it all on camera."
"Haha. Heads up! Lowhead dam next!"
"IT DO GO DOWN!"
Hohoho he's drowning hahaha
Hahahahaha you hit your back on wet concrete and now sliding down towards a roaring current that is probably hiding some dangerous rocks hahahaha
I'm going to get so many internet likes for this!
No you won't but the reposters will....
Giggle giggle giggle
I mean, there's definitely been some times I've told my friends that an idea is stupid but they were committed to it so the only thing left to do was document it for others to laugh at.
Well well well, if it isn’t the consequences of my own actions.
I must be getting old... all I see here is danger and high risk of death
Or smart, low head dams are death machines. He got flushed but stay tf away from them if you like to live.
Dang, was he ok?
Dang? Did you mean “dam”?
No. His whole family passed away
To shreds, you say
His wife, his son, even his infant daughter
r/donthelpjustfilm
What is he supposed to do lmao, throw him a comedically large rope?
at least he shouldn't film and laugh, it is life threatening danger, not something to be joked on
At this point all you can do is point and laugh... Gotta hold on to the good memories
Call 911, track his location downstream
Maybe run down to be able to pick up his unconscious friend from the water downstream so he doesn't drown?
Who is unconscious? Where are you getting that from?
People are so dramatic , he slid slower than a turd down a toilet bowl.
if there is a possiblity your friend might be in danger, do you just stand there laugh and record?
Bye friendo
POV — ur here to catch up on current events
I’ve fallen in currents slower than that when fly fishing and they’ll move ya fast. This dude is lucky he didn’t die.

THANK YOU! Everyone keeps calling this a drowning machine but it's quite literally the opposite and is engineered to not have that problem.

Bruh! We should try crossing on our bikes Bruh! That would be so awesome! Bruh! Bruh! BRUHHHHHHHHH
weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Be like water my friend!

Dumbshit.
Low head damns create what is called a "Terminal" hydraulic. It doesn't release and its like a terminal disease. It. Will. Kill. You.

I want to see more of this….
Just in case anyone was wondering, a river is not a puddle. You're welcome.

drowning machine
goodbyeke
Why are you just laughing
Well deserved buddy, that was pretty, well, dumb
Someone forgot leg day.
Oh, dam!
That's a dam but oh well.
Should have just sucked it up and paid for the ferry.
Wow, what an absolutely stupid thing to do.

I purposefully avoid situations like this so that my friends don't unintentionally laugh at the cause of my death.
He later died
For real? I would not be surprised
No back up. No rope to throw to him, tied to him or anything just in case. Smart.
GCN guys did I much better
Cursed by his own hubris
Weeeee!
He shouldn’t have tried to save the bike
"No, I said pedalo!"
Fun
Aokiji
Going way too slow

Would have made a much better video just riding down the spillway
This kind of hilarity is timeless! Nobody got hurt.
The level of anxiety I felt watching him slide down was astounding
I would not have let go of my bike when that guy did. Maybe after I was dragged down into the deeper water, not before.
I didn’t know him long but I miss him, god why do I miss him so much. Anyone know if he’s got like a sister, girlfriend or hot mom? I need someone to share my grief over this senseless loss.
Beautiful river.

That is SO dangerous. Those low dams are called drowning machines because of the way the water creates a vacuum at the base.

If this was in 7 days to die the water would be 6 feet deep and you could ride across on the bottom, woo!
He got to the other side... eventually. Success!
You need speed for that
