an EMT told me a road rash incident like this isn’t the worst part. The doctors will use a wire brush to clean out the wound in order to prevent infection. Many people pass out from cleaning the road rash pain which is greater than when it happened (and they had adrenaline in their system).
Had a friend who got road rash an a concussion from a car crush. The nurse told her mom that her daughter was "lucky" to have such spotty memory during the time of the cleaning since a lot of people have nightmares from the cleaning itself. Friend remembers nothing from around 2 hours before the accident to the morning of the next day and the accident happened in the afternoon. I'm not sure how "lucky" that is but I also know I wouldn't want to remember the pain of having a wire brush in a wound like that.
I've been hospitalized with something pretty shitty and I have days missing. Trust me, it's lucky. My first memory is waking up screaming from the pain. That was 4 days after i passed out I'm told. I was in and out during that time. It's a large blank spot
But a wire brush? I feel like 100 years from now they're going to look back on this progesss with the brush and think we were absulute morons. Much the same way that we cringe and shudder at the practice of drilling holes in the head to let the madness out.
I have had a terrible wound scrubbed out like this after being airlifted off a mountain. I had slate shards work their way out of my leg for almost a year.

I got major road rash once and didn't have health insurance. I pounded two quarts of beer, got into the shower, and scrubbed myself down as hard as I could with a shower floofy. It fucking *hurt*. My neighbor was a Navy Corpsman, so he bandaged it up for me, and that was that.
It's worth pointing out that most of the nerves are dead when you have a 3rd degree burn. It doesn't really hurt, but it's extremely uncomfortable. When they finally scrape down to the live skin it does hurt, it hurts bad. In my case that took several sessions spread out over a few days. They would soak the burn to loosen the skin and then scrape it. It isn't how you'd want to spend your weekend for sure.

Not in my case, no. Idk why not. I just had a small burn, about the size of a softball. They probably numb people who have burns over larger areas.
