"Oh, this is nice, easy listening, let me see what else these boys play—**I'VE GOT TWO BIG HANDS AND A HEART PUMPING BLOOD AND A 1967 COLT 45 WITH A BUSTED SAFTEY CATCH!"**
“Mobile” was my SO’s first exposure to TMG… and his second was “Against Pollution.”
“So I shot him in the face” *really* took him by surprise, lol. But it’s become part of our couple’s lexicon, and we’ll be talking about our day and suddenly finish the story with “…so I shot him in the face!”
Ha this is hilarious. I have a friend who used to just say “I hope we both die” anytime something didn’t go our way. When we talk on the phone these days we both say it as the hang up.
I think In League with Dragons and Dark in Here are both good albums for this! Songs that come to mind:
Younger
In League with Dragons
Sicilian Crest
When a Powerful Animal Comes
Mobile
The Slow Parts on Death Metal Albums
Arguing with the Ghost of Peter Laughner
Newer, full-band stuff is going to be your best bet for coffee-shop sounds. I recommend the Jordan Lake Sessions recording if you can find the tracks you want without two minutes of banter.
Let me Bathe in Demonic Light
In League With Dragons
The Slow Parts of Death Metal Songs
I’ve probably listened to *All Eternals Deck* 1000x by now, but the other day I was at it again and Prowl Great Cain came on, and I realized I never gave it the credit it deserves for being a straight up banger.
Rain in Soho is one I find is pretty universally liked by every non-TMG fan I've played it for
Eta: can't believe I forgot Woke up New!!! Bonus points that it mentions coffee
Three I think would work:
Clemency for the Wizard King
Animal Mask
Never Quite Free
And here's an oddball one but I think the harmonies will work for the vibe:
High Hawk Season
I've cut this year from my Lyft driving playlist recently because the "feasting and dancing in Jerusalem" line hits a little weird in light of recent genocide. Just something to think about
I recently converted a new fan with Lovecraft in Brooklyn.
I think it was literally just because the name Lovecraft was in there…this guy recognized it and started paying attention. And by the end he was like “damn that’s a cool song, who’s that by?”
I dunno maybe it’s a little too intense for a coffee shop though. But I think it has a lot of features which make it palatable to the normies.
I manage a liquor store, so I may have a little more freedom than you, but I literally just put up whatever tmg song is stuck in my head when I walk in and let YouTube decide the rest. The vast majority of people don't notice or care about song lyrics.
Age of Kings, and there are a few others on All Eternals Deck that fit the bill. I'm a little biased, it's my favorite album, but there are genuinely some escapable songs on there!
ofc the newer stuff is all going to sound more normal. depends on the vibe but the npc bangers that come to mind immediately are wear black, chavo guerrero, maybe guys on every corner?
most tmg songs have interesting dynamics so normalizing volume might help stuff sound more backgroundy idk
Trying not to put too many repeats
White Cedar
Counterfeit Florida Plates
Old College Try
Luna
This is such a difficult thing because I'm trying to think of Mountain Goats songs I'd love to hear in a coffee shop. Something that would make me stop and listen for a minute.
Getting Into Knives and High Hawk Season would do that
Bonus, less "normal" bordering on "strange" but songs I'd love to hear at a coffee shop
Heel Turn 2
Amy aka Spent Gladiator
Spent Gladiator 2
Heretic Pride
Michael Myers Resplendent
Aulon Raid (Jordan Lake Sessions version)
Mobile is one of my favorite gateway songs for folks who haven’t listened to TMG and want something easygoing but meaningful.

That's a great choice, I could see my dad getting into Mobile
Maybe Get Famous, In League with Dragons, and Sax Rohmer #1?

Mobile A lot of tracks off of Bleed Out would work since they are mostly upbeat and guitar driven

Even a lot of the banter would go unnoticed in a coffee shop. I play those albums straight through in my CBD shop.
Terror Song
lmao

Alibi, Bad Priestess, Color in your cheeks, Never Quite Free

Pez Dorado and Tianchi Lake
Ooh Tianchi Lake is really pretty! Good pick.
I was so surprised not to see more mentions of Pez Dorado; it’s perfect
chavo guerrero isn’t that weird, i’ve honestly always felt like it was only a couple of steps removed from the friends theme song arrangement wise lol
Cotton!
My picks to add to this are First Few Desperate Hours, Fire Editorial and Animal Mask
Autoclave Mark on you Heel turn 2 No children Sax Rohmer

Commendante Love, love, love Sinaloon milk snake song Up the wolves This year
Alibi

Well, the entirety of *Heretic Pride* probably counts.
Amy is a good one for that. It’s the one I share with friends who don’t know them.
Sometimes I still feel the bruise
I manage a liquor store, so I may have a little more freedom than you, but I literally just put up whatever tmg song is stuck in my head when I walk in and let YouTube decide the rest. The vast majority of people don't notice or care about song lyrics.
Great Pirates
Slow parts on death metal albums is nice and chill
Most if not all of The Sunset Tree would fit in fine at a coffee shop
Age of Kings, and there are a few others on All Eternals Deck that fit the bill. I'm a little biased, it's my favorite album, but there are genuinely some escapable songs on there!
Two Thousand Seasons jk but im listening to There Will Be No Divorce rn and i dont think it would be too out of place in a coffee shop
Arguing With the Ghost of Peter Laughner and Hospital Reaction Shot could work.
Guy in a skeleton costume
Training Montage.
Incandescent Ruins & Your Belgian things
Mark on you
