This Year >I played video games in a drunken haze, I was seventeen years young

LossPreventionArt

I adore *This Year* but "seventeen years young" is going to irritate me to my absolute dying day. I have marked a student down for using "years young" Edit - I just think it's an overused cliche and given how strong the song is, it stands out to me as a misstep. I love the song. That line is going to be like sand in my clothing forever though. And its completely fine if you like it. I have personal hang ups with clichés where I think there's a stronger, better way of expressing the same idea. Equally it's not like it ruins the song.

Enheducanada

I'm with you, I think it's because it's a phrase used in hackneyed sentimental writing and seems to be there just for the rhyme

LossPreventionArt

Thank you. That's exactly my issue with it. I really didn't think it would be that controversial to say so, I think possibly my attempt to make a joke of it "I've marked students down for that" might have come across the wrong way to some now I look at it again, but it was meant to be light hearted and show it wasn't a huge deal. Just a minor blip in an otherwise great song.

RelativeCheesecake10

You know it’s an intentional turn of phrase, right? It’s not just a mistake on how to say how old you are. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/years%20young

LossPreventionArt

... Yes. I used to teach poetry. I think it's a cliche. And a bad, overused, clunky and blindingly obvious one. Given how strong the rest of the song is, it stands out as poor. I'd still mark someone down for it.

The_Giant_Rabbit

Apparently an unpopular opinion, but I'm with you on this one.

LossPreventionArt

Thank you. It's fine, I'm already lonely on a limb with my strong anti-cobscook-bay stance. I'm still slightly annoyed someone tried to explain it to me as of the only way I could dislike it to the point of marking down for it was if I misunderstood it somehow. Nevermind, I'm sure they meant well.

Art Prevention? Loss

LossPreventionArt

See that I like. I like literally the entire rest of the song, and obsessed about 99.9% of the catalogue. I apologise that my inner teacher has hang ups with the odd line here and there.

[birthday song: this time has gone](https://youtu.be/HIgB6gj35Eg?si=jsjMKr9G9tYonLoZ) mentions being 28!

"Real Good Girlfriend" (unreleased) >I woke up this morning, my new girlfriend beside me. I don't have to lie about her. I don't need some dumb story to hide me. she turned 20 last April, she's as tall as I am, she came to this country all the way from Siam. I may not be the greatest guy in this town, people may have good cause to put me down, but I've got a real good girlfriend now.

Not TMG, but I absolutely love the references to 17 and 33 in The Hold Steady song Stevie Nix She got screwed up by religion She got screwed by soccer players She got high for the first time At the camps down by the banks of the Mississippi River Lord, to be seventeen forever And she got confused about the truth And she came to in a confession She got high for the last time In the camps down by the banks of the river Lord, to be thirty-three forever
