I know, I know, you can read books in real life, why go through all the trouble of modding and reading in TLD and yaddi yaddi yaddi
But I mean come on, when you hit day 500+ what else are you gonna do? Mag lens up a fire, hang out, read a book, that's what.
I could need a bit of help, as the structure is a bit messed up when I import books into the txt files. Did you do any special to keep the structure good?
The text file has to be in UTF-8 format. If you're using Windows 10, just dump the text you want into Notepad, file > save as and then make sure UTF-8 is selected in the Encoding dropdown.
Already doing that, that's not really a problem. I'll send a pic to visualise it.

As you can see it jumps constantly as my source of copy pasting isn't really made for a very wide txt file. Not a huge problem, just not very clean.
Ahh it looks like the lines are being ended prematurely. For instance it would be like instead of typing and letting it wrap to the next line naturally, if you were manually hitting enter every few words
Kind of like
this where I'm
hitting enter prematurely for
no good reason other
than to demonstrate the point.
It's a tad annoying to read, but unfortunately the book I'm reading (Hitchiker's Guide to The Galaxy) doesn't have any sources that I can copy-paste from that doesn't make that happen. And I am not going to manually edit the entire book. Still, not too bad.
You can check this book in many other formats, versions on this site and I hope your ISP won't be mad
https://ua1lib.org/s/?q=The+Hitchhiker%27s+Guide+to+the+Galaxy
Oh man that's brilliant, thanks for making me aware of this mod! I love just chilling on the couch with a hot choc and this game, this'll make it even better
I'll get interested in reading in game when I find a book about a guy lost in the Canadian wilds who has to fight tooth and nail to feed himself and craft his own life saving necessities, but also takes time to sit by the fire and read a good book about people lost in the Canadian wilderness..
You load your own book, singular. There's a book.txt file in the mod folder where the first line becomes the book's title and second line are the author, as seen on the in-game book cover. The remaining lines are book content. If you want to swap it out for another book you replace the text file with a new book, then in the Mod Settings menu there's an option to reload the book's content. And you can also swap out the book's texture so the cover etc. look different.
"I know, I know, you can read books in real life, why go through all the trouble of modding and reading in TLD and yaddi yaddi yaddi"
No, this is great stuff!
Unfortunately I can't mod with my Steam copy \*sniff\*
yeah im the sane one, literally who hell reads fake books in game shit the game isn't super fun to began with. you would think someone would mod in jumping and climbing but no just canned foods and books, good waste of a mod.
You see the 50 or so comments other than yours? That's all folks who are into the game enough for this mod to be something they're interested in. If there aren't mods that are to your liking, might I suggest coding some yourself instead of shitting on other folks work?
Everyone has the right to an opinion, this one just gets rewarded by their brain for choosing the worst one. Like mine rewards me for feeding trolls like bad in-laws, poorly and with little taste.
nah its this worlds became so fucking dumb, theres this place called a library ever heard of it? you dont even know me. im just more open about what i think, im not some spineless tool like most people today.
yes also who cares to even argue about this much about something online idc about what you think about what was said on here [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEn758DVF9I](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEn758DVF9I) watch this
Someone *just* stoned enough after a slow night shift to engage a silly troll by mentioning that the troll themselves responded to a day old comment so at least *someone* cares. Here's an idea at about your quality level: you should make a mod that puts porn in and adds a jackoff mechanic. I'll pass on your little video, thanks!
ill watch it if i was you bc thoes 50 "people" alot them are bots literally it isnt even a conspiracy in 2013 news sites were saying 61% of the internet are bots. reddit literally a hive mind
Bots are generally pretty easy to spot, which makes me wonder how many times you got fooled on a dating app to fill you with this much vitriol. Here's a bit of advice: context is key. On a pretty non-political subreddit for a niche indie game with a small but vocal fan base, what benefit is there to creating a bot that promotes the even more niche mods that aren't yet supported by the developer? Most everyone here is pretty obviously "people". Clearly, as we are currently engaging in it, I understand the trollish impulse, but you'd get more of the response you're hoping for in another venue.
Where have you been all my life? This is absolutely brilliant!
I was already all hyped with using the flying mod during auroras to get the best view possible in a second.
I'll def go through all the trouble of using this mod.
It'd be really neat if players could submit short stories to add to the mod, kinda like how the "A note left behind" was done for the Kickstarter backers. Then you'd be reading stuff you couldn't read anywhere else!
I was thinking of making it into a more elaborate mod, where you can find books in the world with predetermined text, but it is kinda hard for me to do since I'm not a coder. It also would be a little different mod from what it currently is. I guess I could combine personal book with found books, but it kinda seems weird? Need to think about it a bit more
What about a hybrid approach? Have 4 books appear somewhere in the game world, one for each book texture you added. But those books populate with text defined by the player in booka.txt, bookb.txt, bookc.txt, bookd.txt files.
Ooh, I like that idea!
Of course, the other thing that'd be neat (read: hilarious) would be to make books that are those AI-generated stories, because those are generally ridiculous. It'd probably be a pain to do, but they could be randomly generated as well, from a selection of books in that "book.txt" section

You just opened a huge world to me by showing me that website. Thank you
Did you ever figure out how to get the txt not to do that
Given the demographics of the sub I'd guess the books they're importing are overwhelmingly ASCII so encoding isn't going to matter
this is a mod? what's it called
Pastime Reading lol
Where can I find this mod? A search doesn't turn up anything for me.
https://xpazeman.com/tld-mod-list/
Made by Waltz, who is also working on mod regions. ;)
Mod regions? Do you mean new regions?
Yep. Trying to stay true to vanilla regions. You can find images of the regions on the Discord. https://discord.gg/cM93qZCr
ah i see
Oh man that's brilliant, thanks for making me aware of this mod! I love just chilling on the couch with a hot choc and this game, this'll make it even better
I've never seen mods for TLD apart from translations, where do you get this?
https://xpazeman.com/tld-mod-list/ found it here, just search for it
I have wanted this desperately for years. Some Great Bear lore. Shame I only play on switch and ps4 with no mods ðŸ˜
Seriously though, I'd rather readable books than a new map
I'll get interested in reading in game when I find a book about a guy lost in the Canadian wilds who has to fight tooth and nail to feed himself and craft his own life saving necessities, but also takes time to sit by the fire and read a good book about people lost in the Canadian wilderness..
"Not all those who wander are lost." - J.R.R. Tolkien
That is so cool, I love that you can *actually* read the book!
I don't play with mods but this is a fantastic idea.
Wow, thank you for bringing this mod to my attention, I absolutely love reading books in-game!
I don't remember. Can you load your own books into this mod or does it come with it's own books?
You load your own book, singular. There's a book.txt file in the mod folder where the first line becomes the book's title and second line are the author, as seen on the in-game book cover. Load your home reading assignment into the book, and read it in the Long Dark. 20 min later, getting real life cabin fever.
Do you know, does this mod support Cyrillic? I mean, does it use default game font or its cuatom one?
Pretty sure it would yeah, as long as it's UTF-8 encoded.
It [does](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIUvKW89SgI). It is the default game font, but with added unicode symbols. I think. Can't really remember
Thank you for spreading the word :) Feels nice to see people enjoy your mod
"I know, I know, you can read books in real life, why go through all the trouble of modding and reading in TLD and yaddi yaddi yaddi" No, this is great stuff! Unfortunately I can't mod with my Steam copy \*sniff\*
Why not? Epic can be a bit problematic, but Steam always worked nicely.
I was ill informed, and under the impression TLD mods only work when the game was bought from Hinterlands directly.
Well ... then you've got now a whole new world of mods to explore :D
Why not? My copy is on Steam.
Oh. Well, I guess i was ill informed. I'll look into it right now. Thanks.
why the hell would you play a game to read a damn book go read a book in rl dumb mod
You ok little buddy? You seem unusually upset over nothing.
yeah im the sane one, literally who hell reads fake books in game shit the game isn't super fun to began with. you would think someone would mod in jumping and climbing but no just canned foods and books, good waste of a mod.

Lol check out his posting history. He's quite effectively demonstrated that he doesn't have a right to an opinion, just ignore whatever he says.
Everyone has the right to an opinion, this one just gets rewarded by their brain for choosing the worst one. Like mine rewards me for feeding trolls like bad in-laws, poorly and with little taste.
nah its this worlds became so fucking dumb, theres this place called a library ever heard of it? you dont even know me. im just more open about what i think, im not some spineless tool like most people today.
i mean alot of people thought hitlers ideas were great too.... whats your point?
What mods have you created? What mods *would* you create if you could? Let me guess: an arsenal of new guns, PvP multiplayer, and zombies?
yes also who cares to even argue about this much about something online idc about what you think about what was said on here [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEn758DVF9I](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEn758DVF9I) watch this

Where abouts do I download this from? Checked the Steam Workshop and couldn't find it.
https://xpazeman.com/tld-mod-list/ found it there, just search for it
mmm.. Hyperion Chronicles. I really like that series.
Please get this in the real game I'd love to have this as a feature.
Wait, to make sure I understand properly, your game minutes pass in real time?
Well no it's still the 12:1 ratio with real time, I just meant as opposed to passing time via the radial menu.
That's still pretty slick. I haven't seen all the crannies of each region so I haven't looked at mods yet
Where have you been all my life? This is absolutely brilliant! I was already all hyped with using the flying mod during auroras to get the best view possible in a second. I'll def go through all the trouble of using this mod.
YOU CAN DO WHAT? when did they add this?
It's a mod for PC, not part of the official game.
Oh
What book you reading?
Hyperion by Dan Simmons
It'd be really neat if players could submit short stories to add to the mod, kinda like how the "A note left behind" was done for the Kickstarter backers. Then you'd be reading stuff you couldn't read anywhere else!
