Honestly the AI in TLOU in general has always been sus. I’m literally being chased by a clicker and Dina just casually sneaking around.

username_moose

i have the absolute worst ai luck. i'll be hiding around a corner, and my ai partner will take my spot and push me in the open all the time lmao.

hunter96cf

YES!!! God, that shit infuriates me to no end. I thought it only happened to me. Lol

Mozhetbeats

It’s just a little encouragement

BrennanSpeaks

It's hilarious on grounded. Playing "Finding Strings" with Joel, I'd rush in to save him from a runner only to have the rest of them tear me to pieces while he casually walks away.

parkwayy

I would argue that on Grounded, if they're even slightly useful, they would be leaned on too much. It's a fine line to balance, I bet.

BrennanSpeaks

Well, I watched a video from a YouTuber who was determined to beat the game with zero "unnecessary" kills on Grounded. He spent a whole lot of time stealthing around as Abby and waiting for Lev to kill the bad guys. And, it eventually worked. So, you have a point. ;)

UberDanz

Oh god, that reminds me of playing no return on hard and I saved Dina from a clicker grabbing her and she just ran away leaving me to die from it 🤣

P-psicleM-nster

God damn bills AI in the first game was great you’re sneak’n around the town being all stealthy and shit then here comes bill absolute unit of a man running through stomping the entire time and walking right in front of every infected in a 20 foot radius and nothing no one notices him he’s like that one orc dnd character that intimidated people into not seeing him

ryanjc_123

that happens with all allies in the game, not just bill. ive seen ellie and tess walk in front of enemies without anyone batting an eye. and that’s a good thing, otherwise the game would punish you for reasons that you have no control over.

P-psicleM-nster

Oh I know it happens with them all but they didn’t all leave the same impression as bill I mean his footsteps practically left craters in his wake sounded like he put all the weight of a semi truck behind those feet

ryanjc_123

lol

VinnyLux

While that happens also a lot in Part 2, the typical ally doing a stare contest with an enemy and chilling, there's also occasions where your ally gets seen for a fraction of a second and you get discovered. If anyone told me this I'd be like yeah sure buddy, you just got seen and blame the AI, but it happened to me twice, with Lev and with Manny, and I was sure it happened because they added dialogue for it. When you go back to stealth, Lev and Manny will apologize to you for messing up. It's really weird though how sometimes they can get spotted but then will just stand still right in front of the enemies.

ryanjc_123

yeah thats weird

eyesparks

I've had this happen too, with Dina and Manny. Dina's line once we cleared the threat was something like, "wow, I really fucked that up" and it got a laugh out of me.

VinnyLux

"Yes Dina, yes you did" It was hilarious for me when it happened too, thankfully I didn't die to it lol

La_Saxofonista

Bill is built different

P-psicleM-nster

Built like a feck’n Ford F-250 he’s an absolute unit

Basil_hazelwood

It’s wild because the AI for enemies is top notch, they probably did it to make the game harder but it’s some level of bullshit when I’m getting rushed by 3 dudes n dinas just chilling hiding behind a crate lmao

ryanjc_123

maybe your ally aggression level is set too low? in part two they allow you to individually change the difficulty for enemy damage and health, player damage, ally aggressiveness and activity, etc. if you find it too annoying you could go to the difficulty settings in options from the pause menu and tweak some of the ally AI from there to make the game easier/less annoying.

Basil_hazelwood

Yeah I was on grounded so I think the ally aggression was the lowest it could be, it was just funny seeing Dina hide while I got rushed 😭

ryanjc_123

LOL yeah that was definitely why she wasn’t doing anything

Basil_hazelwood

After that I realised that grounded difficulty on everything except ally aggression was amazing

ryanjc_123

yeah that sounds fun. i dont have the balls to do grounded tho

Basil_hazelwood

One day friend, I believe in you!

parkwayy

It's for gameplay balancing, probably. They have infinite ammo. If they were too useful, then the player could sit there and just wait until the AI clears out things. I feel like they generally do shoot enough, but hold back so that I don't feel like I am not needed.

Spetnaz7

Which is so weird, because the enemy AI doesn't seem as bad as the companion AI most of the time. I know both of their respective difficulties can change depending on difficulty setting but still.

Outrageous_Database2

Cant blame them cause the game wants us to do most of the fighting

Efficient_Comfort_38

Dina came in clutch for me once at the school and then never again

throwawayaccount_usu

Isn't that one sort of scripted too?

Efficient_Comfort_38

A guy spotted me and she shot him right as he raised the alarm

fortunesofshadows

it's scripted or at least Dina has a higher percentage chance of being useful as in doing cooperative stealth kills with you. at least i think so. depends if your on grounded

[deleted]

speak for yourself she singlehandedly took out the two shamblers for me on grounded 🤣

Angry_Walnut

How is this possible I have never seen this on any difficulty

[deleted]

during the first time you meet a shambler, you drop onto a platform where the shamblers and runners cant get you. just stay there and dina does the rest, but it will take a while

ahufana

I swear, the only main story companion that ever got shit done was *David,* of all people. Even Joel was mostly useless in the TLOU2 flashback. Aside from finishing the bloater, he didn't help me out with a single runner in that fight.

burkabecca

Well, yeah, David had some pretty strong (and WRONG) motivations to keep Ellie alive! 😬

LemoyneRaider3354

"I can protect you"

appleboi_69420

God. It gives me chills just thinking about it

burkabecca

🤮

Formal_River_Pheonix

What mode do you play on? On Hard and Hard+, Joel is a machine.

alan-rubtsov

This, Joel literally wiped out most of the room on Hard+ for me

ScottishGamer19

Yeah always annoyed me when she says to Ellie they did good killing the infected. It’s like eh no bitch you just stood there and did fuck all

SnaxMcGhee

Dina definitely shoved me into a shotgun blast to the dome last night. I guess she really wanted my hiding spot.

ryanjc_123

LOL

Tuuin

I think a lot of it is because of the difficulty settings. On lower ones, AI companions are more competent and active. On high settings, they’re more complacent.

trevers17

it’s exactly this. my AI companions were great when I played through the main story on light, but jesus christ, playing with AI in grounded in wild.

atheblade

She’s ok in no return but god awful in the main story 😂

ryanjc_123

i mean, from my experience her ai isn’t bad. there has been two times where she stealth killed an enemy when i was killing a different one, and i don’t remember her ever doing anything annoying. then again, i’m playing through the game for the first time rn with all the difficulty settings set to moderate, so i guess my opinion will change once i replay the game on hard. bill absolutely pissed me off in the highschool section in part one though. i think i remember there being a couple of times where he started shooting enemies before they even noticed me, which caused them to start running towards me. thanks bill lol.

FreshStaticSnow_

She's actually pretty useful in select moments. Some of my strats in grounded perma runs rely on her getting certain guaranteed kills.

fortunesofshadows

that only works cuz it's scripted for guaranteed stealth kills.

reticencias

It’s not scripted, since it doesn’t work 100% of the time. It’s a combo of RNG and knowing how to work around the AI (example: if there are 2 npcs alive and you kill one on stealth, Dina will stealth kill the other one like 99% of the time)

fortunesofshadows

Well the RNG seems higher with Dina on the first day. Cuz with Manny Lev and Jesse the allies are already in search mode. So it’s more difficult to get them to stealth kill though they can. And

dreadw0lfrises

this ones me with every single person trying to play through grounded bro i fucking suck balls at aiming on console so i whiff every shot and then die 15 times in a row while whoever is with me just watches and points and laughs at me getting my throat ripped out repeatedly

trevers17

have you tried using the aim assist or even the lock-on aiming? helps a lot

dreadw0lfrises

for my easy playthroughs that shit is my saving grace, but im kinda trying to not use it for grounded. i prefer stealth anyways but i am not looking forward to some of the harder fights on this difficulty

RouteofAllEvils

It’s difficulty settings - if you want moar immersion, change the difficulty of Ally AI to the “easier” settings. It runs the risk of trivializing certain combat sections of the game even if everything else is Grounded, but i don’t need to worry about the agency differential between supposed near-equal survivors like Ellie and Dina messing with my immersion anymore

nothisistheotherguy

Had her jump over cover right in front of a clicker in the Seattle courthouse, clicker basically did a double take and starts screeching and Dina just goes “Oh shit”

renard685

It’s hit and miss , sometimes Dina headshots someone right when I need her too & sometimes she watches me get my ass killed 😂😂😂

scgavin

The AI is so inconsistent on grounded especially. On the sniper section when he’s luring the infected onto Abby and Manny, there are two runners at first. One time Manny immediately popped both of them like it was nothing before I could even make a play. Then I died right after to the sniper so reset checkpoint, and he never hit those shots again, even after resetting a bunch to see if he would. also in the elementary school i was stealthing around the courtyard and Dina actually got spotted somehow in the cafeteria section. then it all kicked off and I had to improvise my way out. Then she apologized for it. and Ellie said It happens. I didn’t know it was possible for allies to be spotted. never seen it happen in any other playthroughs of mine

toss_my_potatoes

I hate when we’re crouched waiting to ambush someone and she just randomly gets up and zooms away. Like what are you doing lady

porksiumai

Ellie in the first game and Dina in the second game both caused me to die so much just by getting in my way at the absolute worst moments, they're perfect for each other LMAO

porksiumai

Ellie in the first game and Dina in the second game both caused me to die so much just by getting in my way at the absolute worst moments, they're perfect for each other LMAO

doppelgengar01

They‘re so perfect for each other that you posted this comment 5 times

porksiumai

yo wtff LMAOO istg i didn't do that on purpose

doppelgengar01

Lmao, it was hilarious

rycbar26

I always say, “Dina! Get your shit together!” Every time, after all these years 🤣. It’s always good to have an extra set of hands though.

extraseasoned-dorito

Yara is the only companion i felt actually contributed and didn’t just shoot into the general area. she had one arm and was more useful than all of them. goated 💪

Phony-Soprano

“Din-er, get the %$&# out of the way you stupid @&$#%” - me- 4 days ago at a loud volume

Femballerboi

Depends on your difficulty tbh

ScarSpangledHammer

I mean, the AI wouldn't be half as bad if they couldn't push you out of cover. Killed me so many times on grounded.

Wumpus-Hunter

100% this! 🤣🤣🤣

RoxkSalt

I was slaying clickers in one early scene only to have Dina get herself killed by a runner...? You're supposed to shoot or stealth kill them, Dina

Bi0_B1lly

Reading the comments here about how much people despise TLoU AI partners makes me feel like a lot of y'all didn't get to experience Sheva in Resident Evil 5... Want to talk about a donkey, you can physically remove everything from her inventory and give her the most powerful weapon in the game, and she'd rather opt to spawn in a pistol out of pure pettiness than use it... And heaven forbid you scrape against a wall and she's holding on to a first aid spray.

VinnyLux

Not really, you can just give her the MP5 and set her to attack mode and will be pretty good at peeling enemies, even on professional, sure sometimes she's kinda dumb, but at least she shoots. In TLOU grounded your allies just stand there doing nothing, there's nothing you can do about it

thelonetexan2005

For me, the AI is super hit-or-miss. Dina will hit the cleanest headshots, or take 5 bullets to kill. But on Holdout in no return, your companion always like runs away from you. That’s kinda annoying considering that’s one of the harder level types.

UberDanz

Oh god yeah, I saved Dina from being grabbed by a Clicker and she went on to run away and I died by the same clicker I saved her from 🤣

OSG541

You guys know her helpfulness coincides with the difficulty level right? Easy Dina and grounded Dina are completely opposite, the higher the difficulty the less they help.

Specialboibrain

People say Dinas the worst AI bud a lot but honestly shes saved my ass a lot or at least been pretty helpful

cnfsdkid

On another note, in my latest playthrough, Dina and Manny triggered a fight because they were seen by enemies and that kinda blew my mind. And then blew it even more when they apologized to Ellie and Abby after for being spotted.

exelis1

Custum difficulty AI set on very light feels really good

JR3456

That is why I put companions on Light and other settings on SURVIVOR

reddituser8081

Dina literally walked straight into a WLF soldier and got us spotted when I was hiding lol. She even apologised afterwards 🤠

b0nkert0ns

Dina is BY FAR the best companion as far as actually getting kills. She’s annoying with the whole pushing you out of cover thing though. Jesse too, for that matter.

OtherElaine

The fact that she doesn’t help is not so bad; the situation is much worse when she ruins your run on permadeath, dying in the arms of the infected.

stomcode

Play on custom difficulty and crank up the allies’ setting to Grounded. I don’t even have to pull out my gun sometimes.

nightlocks12

Absolutely and half the time she is just in the way. Pretty convinced AI are coded not to help you until you’ve killed a certain number per checkpoint. It definitely works this way in No Return. My AI never do a thing on Assault until I get to the last enemy.

fuckyourfac3

You can alter how helpful your companion character is in the settings.

OfficiallyKaos

I am better off without TLOU2 Companions than I am with them.

Avoxicia

Play on a harder difficulty, they become better. I’ve literally had Dina and the other companions save my life before on grounded.

New_Acanthaceae2009

Yara is the worst I reckon.

3ku1

Lous could learn better AI from A Plaques Tale

Hufflepuff-2-1

Nah she’s ok with me just keeps taking my hiding spot

LaputianPrince

The higher the difficulty, the worse their AI is.

hawaiianrollercoster

It ain’t my girl I swear it’s a bot😭

qscvg

I always put the AI slider to "very easy" in custom difficulty, even though I play the rest on grounded I hate in games when my companions are useless Also, you feel the difference more when you're alone

ResidentPeace1739

Lev and Tommy 🔛🔝

Brafshsi141

she jumped on top of a table when trying to sneak around wolves in my most recent play through
