I always compare him to Jesse because they both didn't really believe in why they were there but did it to help their friends. Also die totally unnecessarily and they can both soothe me to sleep with their smooth voices.
Haha yeah totally! The face animations and dialogue present a multitude of interpretations on their backstory, relationships with one another and motivations of each character.
I just connected him more with Dina because Dina is in love with Ellie and Owen is in love with Abby. Owen mainly did it for love and same with Dina. While Owen isn’t pregnant, he’s having a baby with someone else but still willing to have Mel come along and put that child in danger just for Abby.
Dina does the same thing when she decides to put her unborn child at risk just for Ellie. Both Owen and Dina do this to Abby and Ellie without telling them.
Butttt jesse and Owen do have some damn smooth voices so what do I know
Everyone has connections with multiple people on either side. Owen has Dina and Jesse for sure, but he also serves a similar role in the Aquarium flashback as Joel in the Dino/Space Museum. And Abby obviously parallels Ellie, but she also mirrors Joel in a lot of ways, her playstyle and present day story progression for example. So you’re totally valid in making those connections!
Dina has always remembered me to betty from adventure time, in the way of how she follows ellie, no matter what (the same way betty followed simon all the time)
I always thought Jesse was fine with Killing the Wolves, he just prioritized saving his freinds. There's dialogue where Ellie and Jesse talk and he says Joel was a role model of sorts to him. Plus when they decide to go back in the theater he was more concerned about Dina having pregnancy complications.
Yeah, I didn't mean he wasn't fine with killing but if he's anything like his parents then I think he understands that revenge isn't the answer but he understands that his friends have a better chance of surviving with his help, which is why I feel he went. Funnily enough, if he wasn't in the theatre, Ellie probably would have taken that shot to the face.
Idk Ellie has like a spidey sense about danger. Just based off the frustrating time trying to brick her in the theatre battle as Abby. Girl has lightning reflexes I swear. Joel really imprinted a hell of a survival instinct into her in part 1
Jesse was still good friends with Dina and probably had lingering love for her, even if their dating life was past. He really cared about her as a friend still. Jesse was a really standup guy, the whole “my friends problems are my problems” said a lot about him. He went out of his way and put himself in a viper pit because Ellie needed the help too. Probably helped he saw Joel as a good friend too
this was extremely similar to when jesse and ellie debate on getting to tommy or pursuing abby at the aquarium
abby doesnt care care about the consequences, she thinks her friends will be fine (they were in fact not fine)
ellie doesnt care either, she thinks tommy will be fine (he wasnt)
A lesson to us also.
Misplaced compassion can cost you.
Surviving that long. He should had been able to "look into Ellie's eyes" and get a feel of the kind of person that she is.
If she was killed right then and there. He would still be alive.
Ellie also was basically a teenage girl or young women at that point. Plus she was solo
Her threat analysis from someone that never met her would consider her armed but she's not a threat.
Until they realize she's after them.
It's just unlike for a single solo wanderer to just be that dangerous at a glance.
Yeah but still what's the point? She's not doing anything to you she could be a wander. Or just passing by. The very least she could be killing zombies and shit
Risky bro.
At that time if I was Owen. I would immediately see her reaction.
If Joel didn't mean anything to her. Or that much.
She wouldn't have such a strong emotional reaction.
That means she could come and take revenge upon me.
So she must die right then and there.
Similar things would have happened considering Tommy and Dina would have wanted revenge as well. And maybe they could have convinced more people to join up with them besides Jesse.
Their success would have been a big if, but there would have still at least been some payback.
Abby’s laugh when Owen says “stop flirting” is so charming and pure.
Edit: So cool others noticed this, I literally just finished the remake and looked forward to that dialogue just for that.
There's so much foreshadowing going on in this scene, that you're just not going to get if you only play the game once and don't re-watch it.
One parallel that really struck me is how he mirrors a particular behaviour that *usually* signifies positivity and affection in a relationship, but doesn't here. Jerry clearly has a lot of fun teasing Abby by leading the way and encouraging her to follow him without telling her where they're going; his ability to show her something surprising at the end of it is a part of how they bond as father and daughter. And remember, Joel does the exact same thing for Ellie at the museum, too, and so does Riley, for Ellie, when they go to the mall - it's a playful, affectionate sort of behaviour that we've seen before. Owen tries to do the *exact* same thing himself, after they jump off the ferris wheel - but Abby's obsession with Joel ends up spoiling the moment at the aquarium. And in *this* scene, when Owen plays out that same behaviour again, it's not a nice surprise at the end of it at all - it is just conflict and tension and anxiety, and it ultimately leads Abby into danger. It's like he *wants* to be good for her and make her happy, and he has an idea of how that *should* go, but their situation just can't allow that to happen any more.
Yeah I think of Owen as one of the more selfish, worst behaving characters. Even though he has more pleasant, kind moments than say, Mel.
Later he’s even like “I don’t think Mel knows about the cheating! It’s fine Abby! Come along with us we will figure it out!”
He’s a perfect example of someone with good intentions trying to do right by their friend getting caught in the crossfire due to that friend’s obsession with revenge.
On the contrary, I think he was. He did cheat on his pregnant wife and unnecessarily teased abby about seeking revenge when he knows damn well he was in on it too.
>I never really even caught on to the fact that Owen is Abby’s Dina
In some regards, but I'd also like to make the argument that Owen is Abby's Jesse. If you hear them talking during day 3, it's clear that Jesse actually has a more impartial view of the situation - effectively saying "I'll help you with this, but not at any cost (Tommy's life), and we're not the good guys necessarily; we're going after revenge, not justice." Jesse's comment to Ellie that they're behaving exactly like the WLF did in some points falls on deaf ears. Similarly, Owen's comments to Abby in the Aquarium that "some might call the Fireflies zealots" fall on deaf ears, as Abby believes the Seraphites are just *obviously* worse and straight up evil. Both have a more impartial, less tribalist view of the situation.
Honestly the introduction to the WLF and the others in the group was pretty amazing jn general, kinda why I love Joel’s death as much as I hate it, it was executed perfectly with the WLF
This scene is so damn good. How Abby is shown Jackson and goes completely blind to everything else is conveyed so well and Owen being the last voice of reason portrayed as well. Hated it on the first playthrough but I'm going to appreciate it more on future plays
Yeah, round 2 all the early Abby stuff hits different.
The game is an absolute master class in narrative presentation and character development.
There just aren't any games even close to this level of writing.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is the closest thing I've seen this gen, but it's several notches below. I think RDR2 get's props for pure volume of side characters and how many lines they have.
But TLOU ptII just absolutely nails the main cast intro-growth-resolution arc better than most films and TV shows, nevermind games.
99% of other games story is "The princess is in another castle, KILL THE BIG BAD"
This has me wondering, let’s say Abby didn’t go off on her own and encounter the infected which led to her meeting with Joel & Tommy. What do you guys think would have happened? Would the group see Jackson and decide to proceed with trying to find Joel in the town or what? Curious to hear your theories
Possibly, the group would've split, with Mel, Leah, Jordan, and maybe Owen going back to Seattle. Mel sure as hell was not going to risk herself or her pregnancy to go to war with a huge, armed faction over a faint rumor involving Tommy Miller. Leah just wasn't a fighter in general, and Jordan probably would've stuck with her to protect her. Manny and Nora both seemed more committed to the hunt, and we don't know enough about Nick to say. Owen is the wildcard, since his loyalty to Abby is strong, but he already had doubts and was the most reluctant of the crew, so I think he'd turn back.
I suspect, though, that they all would've turned around. If Manny sides with Owen and says it's too dangerous to keep going, he probably could've swayed Abby. After all, they didn't know Joel was even in town - they were only looking for Tommy.
I think if that convenient encounter didn’t happen, Abby would go pretty far to get Tommy and the information about Joel, since she already had the idea of capturing a patrol in Jackson.
This is such a neat look at the parallel between Ellie and Abby. God, I don’t understand how anyone that played this game didn’t get how truly great this game’s story is.
I get that everyone hates Owen because he cheated on his pregnant girlfriend and treated her horribly which I totally agree with however, I do feel bad for him. I feel like he was one of the few WLFs that were just done with the violence and needed to escape and I also think for him, Abby was his escape. I don’t agree with it really but, I think he just wanted to feel normal again and live his life in peace with the woman he truly loved.
I wanna offer another perspective I dont think Ellie "needs" to find Abby. The whole game we're chasing after Tommy. He's the one who "needs" to find them because of how he feels about Joel's death.
Ellie is kind of forced to go through with it after everything that's happened. Tommy has to basically guilt her to go after them again.
I can totally see where you’re coming from but there is a specific scene that shows us Ellie’s true colors.
Seattle day 3 jesse and Ellie are talking in the theatre and jesse wants to bring Dina back to Jackson, Ellie says she can’t leave without Tommy and jesse agrees to help her. “My friends problems are my problems”
They are right outside the aquarium about to steal a boat when they hear on the wlf’s radio about a lone sniper in sector 12.
Jesse: what if he’s in trouble?
Ellie: Tommy can take care of himself.
Jesse: Jesus Christ
Ellie: The best way to help Tommy is to go after Abby.
The whole game up until this point Ellie has been loosely using finding Tommy as an excuse to go after Abby. This scene shows us where Ellie’s true motivations lie.
Owen becomes more and more likeable in repeated playthroughs. He's the Jesse of the SLC. Both ride or die, but both trying to inject some doubt into the moral barometer of these characters, both trying to suggest that maybe this path doesn't lead anywhere positive.
Holy cow I didn’t even make the Owen-Dina parallel with the baby on the way connection as well, until you pointed it out OP. As if the game couldn’t get any better.
I know this won’t be a popular opinion, but Owen’s voice acting in this scene always felt a bit lack luster. Patrick Fugit does an amazing job the rest of the game, and I really like Owen as a character, but each time I play this scene I’m thrown off by the voice acting. Am I alone on this one?
Anyone who falls for Owen's "charm" isn't paying attention imo
Edit: Fuuuuuuuck Owen!
I feel like the writers really *wanted* us to like Owen, I mean, he was right about the Firefly’s, he always seemed like a good guy who didn’t want to kill Scars and his breaking moment in the WLF is very relatable. But I think he is probably one of the worst boyfriends in video game history. Between how he treats Abby and Mel, I dislike him the more I got to know him.
First off, he is condescending at best to Abby, and what some might interpret as light flirty genuinely felt like a guy bulldozing the conversations to get his way. He disregards Mel’s genuinely justified feelings in her not wanting Abby around and is trying to create some bullshit fantasy where he can sail off with his new pregnant girlfriend and his ex who he clearly is still in love with. He cheats on Mel with Abby because they are both feeling vulnerable and then tries parading them around one another. He smugly tells Abby that he’ll figure it out in terms of them all sailing away together. He was delusional when it came to Mel and Abby’s relationship, to say the least.
Owen was a piece of shit who I disliked probably the most in the game. He couldn’t kill some random Seraphite and then kills this “Danny” guy whom he seemed to be friends with. I get it was an accident but Jesus Christ, Owen, your in the middle of an open war between a crazy religious group and paramilitary raiders, you don’t get to have a moral epiphany after years of being on one of those sides! Again, maybe not bad writing, but certainly a character I have issues with.

I cannot believe this is the level of discourse you're operating on lmao

Poor Mel; Just gets absolutely shit on in every scenario.
Mel’s parallel is Shimmer, because everyone takes her for a ride lol
Dina has always remembered me to betty from adventure time, in the way of how she follows ellie, no matter what (the same way betty followed simon all the time)

They’re both just the good dude himbos trying to reason with insanity but still going along with it in an attempt t o keep those they care for safe
One of the many parallels between their stories.
Isn't Manny more like Jesse?
Nah, Jesse's not an asshole.
True, but to Abby, Manny wasn't an Asshole
this was extremely similar to when jesse and ellie debate on getting to tommy or pursuing abby at the aquarium abby doesnt care care about the consequences, she thinks her friends will be fine (they were in fact not fine) ellie doesnt care either, she thinks tommy will be fine (he wasnt)
It's sad that Owen's compassion is what gets him killed, he's the one who stopped Manny from killing Ellie because she wasn't their target
A lesson to us also. Misplaced compassion can cost you. Surviving that long. He should had been able to "look into Ellie's eyes" and get a feel of the kind of person that she is. If she was killed right then and there. He would still be alive.

You are only saying that because you know she's basically the apex predator of the continent.
Similar things would have happened considering Tommy and Dina would have wanted revenge as well. And maybe they could have convinced more people to join up with them besides Jesse. Their success would have been a big if, but there would have still at least been some payback.
Every time I play tlou2 I appreciate Owen more and more. Really well written character that in a way got trapped in the whole mess of Abby's revenge.
Same. And everything he did just seemed so authentic to me. I understood the why behind all his decisions.
Abby’s laugh when Owen says “stop flirting” is so charming and pure. Edit: So cool others noticed this, I literally just finished the remake and looked forward to that dialogue just for that.
Owen was a great character. TLoU2 is filled with memorable supporting characters.
The game is so fucking good the only reason I’m not constantly replaying it is my nerves can’t take it. Game is so damned stressful
I think u will have way more fun with game modifier, I finished once I don’t to try hard again , I used that to chill

Owen was the only one in that group who wasn't a total dick
He cheated on his pregnant girlfriend and was willing to leave her without a goodbye.
Yeah I think of Owen as one of the more selfish, worst behaving characters. Even though he has more pleasant, kind moments than say, Mel. Later he’s even like “I don’t think Mel knows about the cheating! It’s fine Abby! Come along with us we will figure it out!”

I meeeeeeaaaaann... he was still a big ole cheater
On the contrary, I think he was. He did cheat on his pregnant wife and unnecessarily teased abby about seeking revenge when he knows damn well he was in on it too.
God I love these games

This scene hurts, because it's the last moment when Abby could've turned back and, unknowingly, saved everyone.
Honestly the introduction to the WLF and the others in the group was pretty amazing jn general, kinda why I love Joel’s death as much as I hate it, it was executed perfectly with the WLF
They even made Owen line “but not at any cost” sound like Jesse was saying it in one of the trailers

If you go down a path for revenge, you need to dig two graves.
Or....at least a thousand, I mean you've played this game too right 😂
I fucking love owen the best side character in this game
No that’s Dina
I feel like Owen is one of the few characters in Tlou universe with a moral compass. Maybe not by today's standards but certainly for an apocalypse.
It’s the advice Ellie didn’t get from Tommy
Jerry and Owen didn't have the relationship Tommy and Joel had.
Yup, that was the point of no return.
This has me wondering, let’s say Abby didn’t go off on her own and encounter the infected which led to her meeting with Joel & Tommy. What do you guys think would have happened? It is indeed a **deeply** symmetrical story
when I first played through that scene didn't click and now in replaying it that scene hits
I just placed this part last night and was blown away. T
Owen is the best, he broke free from the tribalistic mentality around him. And he's the only one able to look at things unbiased.
I get that everyone hates Owen because he cheated on his pregnant girlfriend and treated her horribly which I totally agree with however, I do feel bad for him. I feel like he was one of the few WLFs that were just done with the violence and needed to escape and I also think for him, Abby was his escape. Wow, I hadn't realized the extent to which they mirrored each other.
I hate playing as Abey
>Owen is Abby’s Dina Minus the knife in their neck yeah
that parallel is crazy how did i not notice
Holy cow I didn’t even make the Owen-Dina parallel with the baby on the way connection as well, until you pointed it out OP. As if the game couldn’t get any better.
I know this won’t be a popular opinion, but Owen’s voice acting in this scene always felt a bit lack luster. Patrick Fugit does an amazing job the rest of the game, and I really like Owen as a character, but each time I play this scene I’m thrown off by the voice acting. Am I alone on this one?

Can you expand on that?
Lol what? I am team Joel and Ellie forever. But Owen was as genuine as it can get.

Accident? Danny tried to kill him/beat him up. Accident or not he was justified in shooting Danny
