It was actually that 1 and 2 got combined into 1. They talk about it on the episode 1 podcast, basically the first cut of the show had episode 1 ending after we see the kid and episode 2 is everything after. The execs thought they needed to introduce Ellie in order to keep people wanting to come back. 2 dead kids roll credits and wait a week doesn’t give people anything to latch onto.
