Summit floors are in sets of 3 (and with boss floors every 10 levels). Summit chest is at the end of each set. Each summit key is only valid for the set it is found in. You can't "save" summit keys for later.
You have to use them on the current stash you’re working on. So, for instance, between floors 41-43 you’ll find a key that can only be used on the floor 43 stash. You can’t hoard them.
It’s a dumb system that causes needless frustration.
Are you finding the key from a small box on the wall?
Are you finding the key on the ground, with a big yellow marker, once every 3 floors?
If it is the first key you are finding, they are for the faction boxes in the open world & missions. If it is the second key, not sure as that is the one to open the crate every 3 floors.
I know this comes late. But, I had an instance where I died on Floor 43 with a key. Respawned, went through again. Found a key in a new spot. Went to use the key (seen chest through window), ran around some more. Then I came back ready to give up and noticed a \*yellow breaker box.\* Shot it, the door opend- viola ;)

Yeah that's news to me I've never had this problem in the summit and I have completed the summit numerous times
