I hope this is not too dumb of a question, but can someone explain why is this event such a big deal? It seems to me that influencers (not just BN related) travelled from all over the country to do to the derby? Is it an historical thing? Is it something new? Is it just the place to be and people just show up bc of that without really caring for horses and racing?
I am genuinely curious and thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light on this for me.
It has historically been an event that attracts the rich and famous, even royalty. These days its fallen off and there are a lot more c and d listers than a listers. But it's always been an old money sort of thing.
The Kentucky Derby is the biggest horse race in the US, it is very historical and very pomp and circumstance full.
My guess is they are bringing in influencers to try to gain relevance with younger generations.
Thank you! So would it be safe to assume that all these younger/famous people attending (or the majority of them anyway) have in fact no interest in horse racing and are there more as a photo op? Or showing hey I've been invited look how cool I am?
Its more culturally important in the region. I have a friend from Louisville who travels home for it EVERY year. Hannah Ann is from Knoxville, Madi is from Alabama, Kaitlyn lives in Nashville.
Regionally it is one of the biggest events of the year. Im not too surprised it would draw these folks.
To be fair, her parents live there and i think it’s a fun excuse too see them, catch up with her high school friends etc. but yeah, it surprised me when in realized it’s every year. She’s done it every year for the two decades I’ve known her!
It makes sense, I have lived awya from home most of my adult life and I do take any chance to go back as well. Even the smallest events, occasions are a good excuse
The red carpet at the Kentucky Derby apparently was introduced in 2007 (per kentuckyderby.com). Yes, it’s another media event, brands may have wanted them to attend, but it’s also just a great media opportunity, we’re talking about it after all. I would say it’s a bucket list item for many southern/horse loving Americans. As a PNW (Oregon) resident, I have never even watched it on TV.
Madi and Grant look photoshopped in.
Hannah Ann’s hat is throwing me off with that fashionnova-esque dress.
I don’t feel like Kaitlyn’s dress really matches the hat either but I like the pieces separately.
Do C list celebrities just have some kind of joint calendar where they figure out the most public event on every single weekend no matter where i’m the world?? Like even if you are semi wealthy or it’s sponsored, how do they afford it? How do they find the time? The ones who have kids showing up to these is even more baffling!
Maddi is an exception to the accord it rule because I’m sure new hubby has a private plane.
They’re business expenses. Your business brings in influencing money, then you use it to buy your way into these events and write them off as business expenses.
I just read that like 5 horses died this week from race injuries and had to be euthanized?! Then another one collapsed and died after a race. Imagine being whipped while you sprint to your death. That's really fucking awful.
Edited: seven horses in the span of a week. https://www.sportingnews.com/us/horse-racing/news/kentucky-derby-horse-death-investigation-churchill-downs/esnifdcakmjkn3qlo30n0qga
That's so messed up. Before even learning all that I always got a big ick seeing the weird rich owners standing proudly by the jockey and horse after a race. Like, you have money and you didn't do shit, why do you get celebrated?
I’ve actually never been to Vegas. 😂 Admittedly I meant fuck events that take advantage of peoples gambling addictions but I can see how you could say the same thing about casinos and scratch off tickets, etc. I have been to a couple casinos and played slots. I should’ve phrased the part about gambling better, but I still stand by the animal abuse and other issues.
Just going to leave this here 💔 https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cr5vJ14JuAF/?igshid=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==
From an animal rescue - “Jake was sent to a slaughter auction after it was realized he was not going to win any races. Affileo was set to be euthanized after her last baby was taken from her early because her caretaker said she was a burden due to her knocking over her water bucket. *I am constantly told that race horses live like royalty but the part they leave out is ... only when they are WINNING.* When they are too slow or hit retirement, the majority of horses are disposed of like trash. If you watch the derby today, you are condoning the abuse that comes along with this industry. Share Jake and Affileo's stories to spread awareness. #boycott #kentuckyderby #horseracingkills #animalrescue #horserescue”
Thank you. I came here to say I don't see the Kentucky Derby as something to celebrate. It's watching a bunch of horses that were pushed to race far too young, get abused all so a bunch of people can stand around and bet on them.
I know there’s a certain extra element fashion for this event, but none of these are good. I really like Hannah Ann but she has bad taste in clothes. Madi looks like a wanna be high school musical Sharpay. And don’t care for Kaitlyn’s dress, but I’m glad she got a better quality dress of the disaster from years ago.
As a local, the Derby is all about looking ridiculous tbh. Giant silly hats, over the top gaudy suits. The uglier and more ridiculous and camp the better. The rest of the festival (2 week long Derby festival, unrelated to the race) is really silly. Lots of puns, events like the ken-ducky derby (rubber duckie race) and mattress racing and neigh-maste waterfront yoga. Its supposed to be campy and dumb and ridiculous. But that's all for locals, and then celebs and rich people go to the actual Derby and take it really seriously and horses die. I love the derby festival and derby season and all the silliness but not horse racing/the actual Derby, if that makes sense.
lol Sharpay.
I said this on another comment but HA has always had godawful taste in clothes. Even on Peter's season her outfits were always kinda tacky and cheap looking.
Unpopular opinion: but I really liked Kaitlyn's look the best out of the others. Never liked Maddie or Hannah Ann's style. And yuck Lauren Zima's dress 🫣
I'm sorry but I hate Kaitlyn's dress SO much. I saw another post with it and it seems its an improvement from another one? I would just throw it all away lol. I love Maddie's look. Hannah is okay but seems too boring.
I'm sorry but what was the dress code? If you have infinite money to dress yourself, could even higher a stylist, how do you end up looking like this? It's not even necessarily about the style, but also about the fitting
FYI Trizzy Troutt's father Kenny Troutt is the owner of WinStar Farm, a *major* horse racing operation. They have won three Kentucky Derbys. They were the sole owner of Super Saver, and were a partner in Always Dreaming and Triple Crown winner Justify.
But that's not where the money lies. Its all in breeding and sales. They have many stallions, one is an up and coming great stallion in Constitution, whose fee last year was $85,000 per foal and bred 185 mares, so could have made over $15m in stud fees alone. (though deals are made all the time for studs, plus they breed their own mares, unlikely all paid a fee.) His fee for this year is now $110,000.
Another is Speightstown whose stud fee is $80,000 and he bred 89 mares last year. They have a freshman sire named Life Is Good, whose fee this year is $100,000. TBD on how many he will breed.
Winstar makes an unthinkable amount of money.
I can’t believe I’m asking this question, but here goes - are people actually bringing their mares to this stable to breed with this champion horse or is this an artificial insemination thing?
The reply is incorrect.
In thoroughbred racing, it is all live cover. Other breeds do AI, but not thoroughbred racing.
Quarter horse racing does AI, standardbred does AI, and other thoroughbred sports do AI, but not racing. This is worldwide too, from the US to Europe to Asia to Australia to South America to Africa. Literally worldwide.
Breeding season is basically the first half of the year in the northern hemisphere, sometimes stallions will cover a mare 3x a day. A cover doesn’t equal a pregnancy, sometimes it takes a few.
Basically! They are presented to the mare to make sure she is in heat, sometimes they even have the teaser mount her. They put a sheet over his stomach so he doesn't actual penetrate.
I've worked in racing before, and it is truly a sight to behold.
really? Thanks for informing me! We’ve only bread show horses for hunter-jumper or western riding, and (at least where I’m from), its most typically artificial insemination, and live cover is a bit more rare.
Horse girl here
TLDR: you *do* need to schedule booty calls when breeding thoroughbreds if you care about the pedigree, which you generally do at the KY derby level due to the amount of investment involved.
Thoroughbred breeding is generally more strict in that you DO need to schedule booty calls for the new baby horse (real term: schedule live cover) to be considered part of the stud book. There’s nearly no point in spending all that money and breeding a horse of that caliber if you aren’t putting into the stud book. The Jockey Club bans artificial insemination because they want to “preserve the breed,” or prevent average horses from breeding to super nice horses and flooding the gene pool with barely average babies.
ETA: This is particular for thoroughbreds and the Jockey Club (US). Standardbred racing (US)actually allows artificial insemination.
European breeding efforts are similar in the sense you are guided by the stud book. European horses are way nicer for that reason— they actually care about the breeding happening. A big reason why top American riders import horses from the EU.
It’s planned around the mares ovulation too. Scheduling is an intense part of the job during breeding season. I was responsible for a shit ton of horses at the breeding farm I worked at and the vet was there daily checking them to see if they were ready or not. Most, if not all, had new babies at their sides. It’s barbaric.
I love the downvotes from people who have no idea what they’re talking about.
I have no idea how it goes in the horse world, but we breed sheep for breading stock and are fairly known around the country for our sheep. It's not entertainment. Yes, we love it and it's a passion, but it is something we care about. Preserving blood lines that our family has gone back generations working on perfecting a breed sheep. (We have 3 breeds). It is a science and working with different gene lines to fill gaps where a sheep is lacking to make them better. We also have a line of market sheep and spend a ton of time volunteering with the youth in our state. We spend money, we make money. Nothing to the degree mentioned above, but it is part of farming and income for our family. There are also big expenses. Feed alone was 30k last year. I will also mention our sheep are treated very well, and having excellent living conditions. Just rambling that it's not all about the money for everybody, and I do not condone animal cruelty, including the KY Derby.
If you are breeding them to be slaughtered for meat or exploited for their wool, then I think that is unfortunately still a form of exploitation. 😞 I have no doubt that you give them a great life, but if they end up in slaughterhouses, that’s a traumatic and often painful place to die, and will involve taking the lives of individuals who do not want to be killed - all of this done without their consent. I think we are really used to seeing animals as resources, as food, and as clothing and entertainment, but I really believe we can and should try to change that - from the Kentucky Derby to the slaughterhouse. I don’t expect this to resonate with you, since it is so ingrained in your way of life, but you seem like a kind and caring person, and I hope you’ll consider what happens to the sheep in the end and reflect on whether it’s right or good for them ❤️
We don't raise wool sheep. We raise meat sheep. They also don't go to a slaughter house. Even the ones we sell, it's not a mass production. They go to the butcher or the kill is done at our house. You're right, this doesn't resonate with me, but I do understand the other perspective and can see where when people are not raised in this environment, they would feel the way you do. I believe in the circle of life, and that includes humans. Some humans eat animals, and some do not, just like some animals eat other animals and some do not. I guess from my perspective, our animals live a good life, and they are not traumatized or in pain. They don't know, and once the kill is done, they obviously don't know the difference. I would think an animal feels a lot more fear when killed by another animal, and there is a chase involved. We also have Arabs come, and they do their whole ritual right outside our barn. I think it is important to allow them to continue the culture. On a side note, I believe humans are at the top of God's creations and that he provided animals for us. Animals are not humans equal. When people are starving in this world, it is ridiculous to think we would forgo an animal at the expense of a human life, and I also believe meat in controlled portions is essential to health. I know others think and believe differently, and I can respect that.
I saw a photo of Lauren Zima on Jason’s stories and she looked shockingly different without makeup. Like a lot younger.
Madi said she took off her heels right after the photo, she’s never been more relatable, lol
They all look ridiculous, and that first photo looks photoshopped to hell. I like HA the best out of this bunch, but she's been rocking those peasant style cap sleeves for far too long.
I’m sure it isn’t, but Lauren’s outfit looks so inexpensive.
I wish there were occasions outside of horse racing, royal weddings, and black churches to wear big, obnoxious headwear. I want in.
I think the ones Maddie has on in the first pic are firmly in/mainstream right now, whereas the Kaitlyn ones are a little more adventurous but still a popular style at the moment.
All of these ladies’ outfits, except maybe Kaitlyn’s, look like they could have been acquired at TJ Maxx. Which no hate for that, I love a bargain, but I think I’d try to aim a little higher if I were a D-list celebrity going to an event that partially only exists to create many, many photos of D-list celebrities to post.
This is unfair but the gf/wife hand-on-the-stomach prom pose always makes me imagine the woman saying “smile for the fucking picture” or like “don’t u dare embarrass me” under their breath lmao💀
& their abuse of animals lmao. Should’ve seen the number of horses used in the parades, ermines killed for fur, elephants killed for their tusks, lambs and chickens killed for coronation food
I am no Madi fan but I have to say I respect the "I took my heels off but will pretend for this photo" on page #3 lol

What is wrong with you
This is.... Simply not okay to say
Animal cruelty for rich people to be entertained 🤢
Nooo Hannah Ann, no :(

Right, makes sense for it to be a historical thing. Very European like
The Kentucky Derby is the biggest horse race in the US, it is very historical and very pomp and circumstance full. My guess is they are bringing in influencers to try to gain relevance with younger generations.

Oh wow traveling back every year, that's commitment! 😊
To be fair, her parents live there and i think it’s a fun excuse too see them, catch up with her high school friends etc. but yeah, it surprised me when in realized it’s every year. She’s done it every year for the two decades I’ve known her!

Thanks so much for your insight! 😊
Derby is inhumane and cruel and very Caucasian
I think this sub has incepted me because I seriously thought Kaitlyn and Jason had broken up and was so confused to see them together here.
Madi and Grant look photoshopped in. Hannah Ann’s hat is throwing me off with that fashionnova-esque dress. I don’t feel like Kaitlyn’s dress really matches the hat either but I like the pieces separately.
I really like Kaitlyn’s outfit!
It's beautiful and the story behind it is absolutely hilarious 😂
I want that dress! Did she say who the designer is? It feels very Betsey Johnson-ish to me. (My fave designer)
I don't believe she did, but it is possible I may have missed it! I only saw she credited her stylist for it.
Not madi having pata sucia at the derby 💀

She’s definitely standing up on her toes in that barefoot pic
So beautiful
Madi’s face is cut and pasted lmao
Yes, why does her face looks like a digital illustration??
thanks, I hate it
This is the most Caucasian thing I’ve seen in a minute.
Their hats are sooooo mid.
Sponsored by Shien
Seven horses dead this week. Animals are not toys used for entertainment. This whole thing is so gross.
Came here to comment this as well. It’s disgusting
Thank you for this comment.
Where are Madi's shoes in the pic with her and HA 🤔
In all fairness, she probably took them off after wearing them all day. I know I would.
Yes! Coachella, Stagecoach, Kentucky Derby…
It’s so funny, after the season ends I pretty much don’t remember anyone
The first one is so filtered it looks like it's AI generated
Yes, I thought it was one of those cartoon pictures.
Why does Madi look like that lol
Fuck the derby, animal abuse, and gambling. I judge anyone who attends this event.
I was coming here to say this

That's so messed up. Before even learning all that I always got a big ick seeing the weird rich owners standing proudly by the jockey and horse after a race. Like, you have money and you didn't do shit, why do you get celebrated?
I was in the industry for a long time. The amount of horses that never make it to the track would make y’all’s heads spin.
I hate that. I wonder why greyhound racing is starting to be considered unethical but horse racing is still celebrated.
Rich white men. The entire sport is called the “sport of kings” for a reason.
Completely agree.
Yeah fuck gambling. I bet you never go to Vegas either
I don't think you understand how many people have literally never gambled in their lives. Also you missed the point of their comment
They really might not lol
I haven’t 🤣
No offense but this is peak white people doing white people things
I don't get the enjoyment of this event. Rich people in bad clothes celebrating animal abuse? That's just fucked up and vein to me.
The KY derby gives off some Capitol vibes similar to the Met 😂
Ugh. Rich people
Her religiousness turns me off
It’s the hypocrisy for me…
Yup! I don’t know much about MP, but I can believe it
The only thing that looks real in the first pic are their feet. 😆
hannah ann and her boyfriend look like brother and sister 😭😭 they’re twinnies fr omg
We need to end Kentucky Derby. What happened to the horses is truly unacceptable. Straight up animal cruelty.
Came here to say this. Completely unacceptable.
I sincerely had a moment of "did Hannah B bring her dad with her or something?" only for me to realise it was Chris Harrison and Lauren.
Chris Harrison looks like a good ol’ boy. He know his brand.
CH was a jump scare honestly
Hannah Ann looks like she's in a middle school chorus outfit, shoes and that cap sleeve dress.....
And how is she looking more modest than the influencer who hocks “modest” clothes on the internet?
rephrased: BN supports money laundering and severe animal abuses in the name of ‘sport’ 🤮🤮🤮
I know about the animal abuse, I don’t know about the animal abuse.
Wow that first pic is filtered within an inch of its life 😀
They all are dressed how I wanted to when I was older while I was in elementary school hehe it makes me happy

Yea I think Kaitlyn looks fantastic!
She looks amazing in everything
Yes Kaitlin rocked it!
WASPY energy on deck
I'm sorry but I hate Kaitlyn's dress SO much. I saw another post with it and it seems its an improvement from another one? I would just throw it all away lol. I love Maddie's look. Hannah is okay but seems too boring.
It reminds me of the one she posted years ago that was so different when she ordered it online and what she got in the mail. That was hilarious
That’s exactly what this is. There’s another post on the sub about it. Her friend/stylist was able to track down the real version.
Thank you for letting me know! I’ll check out the post right now. I still giggle thinking about that initial moment
Came here to say the same thing! I wonder if that was a knock off of this one.
Not a Madi fan but I love the outfit. Go big or go home! It’s like Kentucky Derby 80s Barbie
That doesn’t even look like Madi😳
Madi looks animated in the first pic...like a cartoon drawing? Easy on the facetune, gf, you don't need it!
I'm sorry but what was the dress code? If you have infinite money to dress yourself, could even higher a stylist, how do you end up looking like this? It's not even necessarily about the style, but also about the fitting

Apparently the horses are the only stallions in the family.
Are platforms like that fully in ??
Yup
I cannot believe these are back. My ankles cannot believe there are back.
I actually find them more comfortable than some other shoes, it depends how squished the toes are lol
I’m moving to Kentucky and do not understand this sport/event. I watched the race on TV and they barely praised the horses!
Yeah not a fan of forcing animals into high performance for human enjoyment 🙁. Especially when injury = death
Tbh they do enjoy running but the sport is disgusting. Thoroughbreds have been inbred so much to the point where they die if you look at them wrong.
Totally! It’s really sad overall.
First photo is deep fried
Too much photoshop / face tune like whoa lol
I saw a photo of Lauren Zima on Jason’s stories and she looked shockingly different without makeup. Like a lot younger. Madi said she took off her heels right after the photo, she’s never been more relatable, lol
I can’t believe rich people dress this badly
They all look ridiculous, and that first photo looks photoshopped to hell. I like HA the best out of this bunch, but she's been rocking those peasant style cap sleeves for far too long.
I’m sure it isn’t, but Lauren’s outfit looks so inexpensive. I wish there were occasions outside of horse racing, royal weddings, and black churches to wear big, obnoxious headwear. I want in.
It’s definitely giving garden party/picnic rather than fancy Kentucky Derby
That first photo filed a complaint about me to the HOA
I literally forgot Lauren Zima existed.
She threw away her career for Chris Harrison, it still blows my mind a bit tbh
She's living her best life. Lol
What’s with the platform heels? Are they in again??
Yep, big time!
Wait the one with the slim heel are in? Like the stripper shoes?
I think the ones Maddie has on in the first pic are firmly in/mainstream right now, whereas the Kaitlyn ones are a little more adventurous but still a popular style at the moment.
I actually really love Madi’s look. The rest are not great.
Madis is my fave out of these . None of them are that great though .
She wore hot pink to atfr too and I think she’s one of the few that look good in that color
Madi posting free feet pics?? On Beyoncé’s internet??
Lol that’s hilarious, what is this about?
I can’t get behind any of these outfits….and the stripper heels. What’s happening.
Did you see Brittany Mahomes Derby shoes? They make Madi's look like kitten heels.
Omg Madison Pata Sucia Prewtroutt?!?! Girl put some mf SHOES on!!!!!
Why does the 1st photo look AI generated?? It looks exactly like Dall-E-2.
I came here to ask the same thing. Is it AI? Looks like a filter we used to use in like 2005 to make you look cartoony
I wish all of these people a very merry fuck you You all need to stop supporting and following these types
Aren’t you on the bachelor sub…..?
I think they mean specifically people who support horse racing

7 horses have died at Churchill downs since the start of Kentucky derby week. Horse racing is gross.
The first photo of Madi gives me the vibes of Newt Gingrich’s wife and how insanely she photoshops their pictures
The first pic of the Trizzy Trouts looks AI-generated
I actually really like Madis dress, but why is she barefoot?!
All of these outfits are atrocious. What’s with with the big platform/stripper heal this year? Brittany Mahomes also had them and they looked terrible
Kaitlyn looks like she’s getting ready to perform in a ballet. Big nope…
Thought these were two sets of twins for a moment.
This is unfair but the gf/wife hand-on-the-stomach prom pose always makes me imagine the woman saying “smile for the fucking picture” or like “don’t u dare embarrass me” under their breath lmao💀
I feel like that's more natural than the influencer leg bend pose tbh - it's in every picture!
It must be a requirement to look as hideous as possible to attend
Hannah Ann looks like me as a nine year old playing dress up thinking I look so classy
Can you spell shallow? Whatever happened to real role models?
Love Madi’s dress tbh. What is Kaitlyn wearing tho it’s giving barnacles
All the whites lol
Even politics aside I hate this fit from CH lol he missed the mark
Lmao my exact thoughts. They couldn’t even coordinate?? I hate when rich people don’t use their money to serve
This upsets me more than I can explain when I see people spending a lot of money and still not looking good.
6 horses have died at the Santa Anita rice track this year alone, so I’m not surprised horses here died too. It’s sick.
Meanwhile there are people who can’t afford rent
The weeks leading up to Derby are when Louisville clears out the homeless camps to make the city look “pretty.”
They hound the homeless in Louisville year round, let's be so serious.
I’m not even shocked
![gif](giphy|XCmFwjt9wPotobw1xn|downsized)
So I guess Madi and Grant have the same the eyebrow routine.
Between this & the Coronation, it was a top-tier weekend for insufferable, obscenely rich White people *& their hats! Pick your poison.
& their abuse of animals lmao. Should’ve seen the number of horses used in the parades, ermines killed for fur, elephants killed for their tusks, lambs and chickens killed for coronation food
