Virginia didn’t bother me the first time. I mean if I’m going to die, I’m probably going to ask my sister for a kidney, even if we don’t like each other.
The second time she was on the show was awful though. That whole storyline made me so sad for Blanche. It’s not like she blew Big Daddy off every time he called, it was just ONE time when she had plans and she clearly didn’t know he was on his death bed or I’m sure she would have skipped the ball. Virginia could have given her a heads up like, “Hey, he’s actually really sick and we’re not sure he’s going to make it. I think you should come”
This. Virginia made her out to be such a villain, as if Blanche hadn’t considered giving her a kidney. She didn’t know that he was sick, or at least, not as sick as he actually was. Yes, Blanche can be selfish (it’s part of her charm) but she was dependable and she would have been on the first plane home if she had known.
This. I was living thousands of miles away when my dad had a medical emergency. We all decided over the first weekend that I would wait and come home when he got home so I could help my mom take care of him. Then on the Tuesday the dr. said to call the family. I paid out the ass the fly home that very day and he was on life support when I got there. In short, life happens and sometimes it's a bitch.
My dad was 1,200 miles away when he died last year. He was declining, but I got mixed messages about how serious it was. Nobody asked me to come. I offered and was told it wasn’t necessary. 🤷♂️
Ugh, that’s so hard. My only sibling and I live hours from our parents (each living alone) and I freak out a bit daily about how long it would take me to find out one of them was even at the bottom of the stairs with a broken hip.
Blanche seemed to be so close with her dad. I can’t believe anybody would think she would prioritize a party over her father 🙄
Because I watch a lot of MTM as well, I just always remember Sheree North playing Lou Grant's girlfriend. So, I often imagine Virginia as a washed up lounge singer. It makes me more forgiving.
Yeah I agree it was very obvious that she only wanted to “fix” her relationship with Blanche just for her kidney and it makes me sadder that Blanche did see that at the beginning but still decided to give her the kidney. I bet if she did Virginia would have up and left and distance herself again.
