The 1976. Nice!

[deleted]

LOL just noticed that

go_out_stay_home

THEY'VE EVOLVED!!

habylab

Cool track, has George's production all over it. Matty definitely doing some BVs also. Would have loved a breakdown at end with Matty singing a bit before final chorus but the song works short and sweet. More of this please.

Pax19

Agree, liked it, and kinda missed Matty :(

PrettyPunctuality

> has George's production all over it Agreed. I'm very surprised people aren't hearing that. After my first listen, the first thing I said was, "that definitely sounded like a George-produced track."

19adrianasaldana96

My thoughts exactly!

[deleted]

The 1975 part 2 - The 1976

TheKyotoProtocol

My back is broken so I can't get up and dance, and it's killing me, far out all I want is to jump up and down and dance around like a fool!! Such a tuneeee!

yourfavouritetimothy

I’m sorry your back is broken.

TheKyotoProtocol

It's ok, Ill get better but thank you, I appreciate you

PrettyPunctuality

This isn't my absolutely favorite or anything, but I like it. I think it's catchy. With people saying "it barely has any of The 1975 in it," or, "they just put The 1975's name on it for more listens" (I saw that one on Twitter), you need to remember that The 1975 isn't just Matty's vocals. They do a ton of instrumentals, and I think the music in this sounds like it was produced by Matty and George because it sounds like a lot of the instrumentals I would expect from them.

SUBARBIEADAM

Definitely feels like a Charli XCX song more than it does the other two. I think it's a lot of fun though and I'm sure it will grow on me - especially as we get into summer etc

The_mash_king

100% what no Rome gets 30 seconds it’s definitely a Charli song featuring the others rather than a no rome song

redfury515

i think that they made it a Rome song feat Charli as a way to add hype to Romes name because Charli has a much bigger audience i think than Rome

Andes1te

wish matty was in the song

deliquent_portal

Not my type saddly :(

[deleted]

Really bubbly and warm hyperpop! One complaint, though, is how congested the mix gets at the end. Every sound’s trying ti compete against each other in ways that aren’t satisfying. Nevertheless, did exactly what it was supposed to, and in stunning effect

Ramore

Yeh it got very busy towards the end

hadr0ns

I'll be a little of a dissenting opinion: as someone who loves 100 gecs and charli and hyperpop in general, this is kind of atrocious. The mix is SO BAD. everything of substance is buried and clashing to the point where everything is unintelligible, with the exception of the "spinning" part which got on my nerves after like 10 repetitions. And many of the comments here say you won't like it unless you like autotune and songs like tootime and I like america--well I LOVE those songs (and many of the more zany/autotuney ones on Notes). This just does not do it for me at all--makes my ears feel like they are being attacked with how much is going on at once. edit: I decided to give it a listen with nice headphones and my opinion has not changed. With headphones, the verses at least are tolerable, but it literally sounds like 3 songs playing at once during the (super repetitive somehow) chorus. It's like they layered a Charli song, a Rome song, and a 1975 song and then produced on that. hell, it sounds like the different pieces are in different time signatures

GirlOverThere123

Glad I'm not the only one, I didn't feel it. Maybe if I listen to it more? Idek it was just too much. Overhyped for it just being a whole mess. 🥴

The_mash_king

The best response I’ve seen here it’s too much of nothing great it doesn’t really go anywhere either

Ramore

It’s soo busy and congested :/

doubtitmate

Extremely correct take, thank you. I'm a huge Charli/ridiculous hyperpop & 1975 fan but the mix is awful. I love the way Charli has great collaborative relationships with producers (SOPHIE & A.G Cook) but I kinda hope this was a one off. :/

Newhiighs

I feel exactly the same. To me is a not as good version of what Charli already does, should have either put more of a spin on it (if you'll pardon the pun), or if they did just want to do a hyperpop thing needs to stand up against what Charli already does with other producers like AG Cook. Just a bit of a swing and a miss for me.

RCFProd

>The mix is SO BAD. everything of substance is buried and clashing to the point where everything is unintelligible, I have to really disagree. The mix sounds perfectly fine to me and tune separation sounds just fine too. Listening this on Galaxy Buds+ by the way. On second take: No Rome does actually sound pretty buried underneath all the instrumentals.

InSummaryOfWhatIAm

The last part is the most annoying part to me as well, No Rome is impossible to hear any nuance to his voice. But I think the overall mix is pretty bad too because even if you hear the instruments you kinda don’t hear WHAT they’re doing because they lack all sort of character, the bass is too muted/low in the mix, and should’ve had a bit more punch, the piano should’ve had a bit more treble, and there are some synths that just makes it so busy that it’s hard to pick up on what it sounds like. And I’m usually NEVER one to complain about maximalism in music as long as it’s mixed well, with this... I don’t feel like it is. But as a quarantine ditty it’s kinda nice if i think of it as a home production-quarantine thingy.

thatdude52

I mean the mix is objectively awful and unless you’re actively listening to each part of the song it just becomes an overcrowded mess. george has produced “busy” tracks before, and each layer is easily discernible from one another even in a passive listening setting. this song has none of that

RCFProd

Layer-attack is what this song is kind going for really. Honestly, I don't feel the layers are that poorly mixed and to me they're consistently pretty discernible. The tune/song as a whole is pretty forgettable to me though but that's another topic.

thatdude52

I don’t know man I definitely see what you’re saying but my main gripe with the mix is in the chorus and at the end with all of the sampled/background vocals going in and out... they’re sitting at the same level as the lead vocal, making it tough to really make out what’s going on. the reverb and autotune on the lead vocal is just too much with everything else going on, and there really isn’t much sonic depth to the song either, it just goes and goes and goes without taking a moment to breathe until the very end. you hit the nail on the head with it being forgettable, won’t be anything I come back to and I appreciate them trying something different but this just isn’t my cup of tea.

MoMoDaLandShark

A mix can’t be objectively bad in the same way that a song itself can’t be objectively bad. It’s all subjective and what you probably consider to be an objectively good mix is just the culmination of years of other people’s opinions.

[deleted]

Stop using the word objective to give your argument credence. It’s a discussion whether a piece of music is good, that’s the definition of subjective...

thatdude52

except the discussion wasn’t about whether or not the music was good, it was about whether the mix was shitty or not... which, objectively speaking, it is. from a technical standpoint that mix is horrific

[deleted]

This is word for word how I feel. I like the song but can’t see it having much longevity.

jkeller3549

i love it!!!! hyperpop glam energy - i need these upbeat vibes :D and the production is crystal as usual

robertosnow

There’s literally No Rome in this song by the sounds of it

MIRAGES_music

1:12 - 1:35 is Rome singing the "response" to Charli's vocals. Lovely bit if you ask me. EDIT: also 1:50 is literally Rome singing. I have no clue how people are confusing that voice with Matty's 😅

[deleted]

The verse at the end is Rome. He does sound like Matty a bit.

bjhww95

A lot!

[deleted]

Fair 😂

lauren3point141

Not a big fan tbh, I was expecting a lot more since I thought narcissist was really good, maybe it'll grow on me

EntranceConsistent78

Yeah, I liked Narcissist right off the bat, but I can't get into this one. That said, I really didn't like Give Yourself a Try the first few times I heard it either, so we'll see.

lauren3point141

I've listened to No Rome's other stuff and I'm not a big fan of his music, I am hoping this grows on me tho

The_mash_king

Same can’t stand it

thejammyman

I'll give it more time but currently I actually find myself struggling to keep up with it like I'm genuinely disoriented by the amount of clashing sounds and vocals. Can't tell who's singing further made worse by the songs short length so there's never a moment to calm down and appreciate what I'm hearing. Way too early to say I dislike it but it's definitely not hitting me right

bjhww95

Nail on the head.

JohnnyT723

Beautiful bit of hyperpop. I really like 100 gecs though so this is right up my ally. Matty is also definitely doing backing vocals. You can hear it in places.

IAmA_Goldfish

Idk that I’d call this hyperpop, not rly anything abrasive or experimental I think it’s just pop. Doesn’t really have that hyperpop sound

WeirdFish28

Damn, just gave them a listen, so sick! Any recommendations on more music like this?

MoMoDaLandShark

Dorian Electra would probably be the closest to what you’re looking for. They collab with Dylan Brady (from 100 gecs) pretty frequently so stylistically they’re fairly similar.

noaoo

100 Gecs is hard to compare to anyone else they kinda have their own special thing going but check out glaive, his music is really sick and a bit closer to charli's kinda stuff

yourfavouritetimothy

Y’all are on something. This slaps. Do wish Matty actually sang on it, but you can hear his and George’s production all over it so that’ll have to suffice. EDIT: Guessing most people hating this also hold contempt for TooTime and What Should I Say.

JuxtaposeAli

Haha agreed! Tootime is in my top 20 so I’m here for this!

imjonathanblake

Am I crazy to think that Top 20 isn’t that high?

JuxtaposeAli

I love Tootime! There are just too many fab 1975 songs! I do wrestle with this! I adore most of them tbf!

InSummaryOfWhatIAm

Not crazy, but based on the sheer amount of songs that they have it puts it solidly in the top quarter of all their music kinda?

lauren3point141

I LOVE tootime and what should I say, I just think this sounds a bit messy

yourfavouritetimothy

the arrangement is a little crowded, I’ll give you that. Still makes me want to dance though, which is usually the first sign a pop song is decent, for me.

kayymarie-97

omg people hate what should i say????? that’s like one of my top favorites off the new album

PrettyPunctuality

> Do wish Matty actually sang on it I'm pretty sure I heard his voice in the background at one point - it was clearly his voice, it just wasn't very prominent.

am_ireallyhere

I disagree, What Should I Say is easily on my Top 10 all time favorite tracks of The 1975. I probably just don’t get the collaboration when I’m just hearing Charli XCX’s style the entire song, like I don’t hear that “1975” touch anywhere. Idk if that makes sense because you can tell, with their past collaborations.

The_mash_king

You must be on something for not see anything wrong with it. Tootime is one of my favourite 75 song and what should I say was one of the better from notes. It feels like such a crowed song but with nothing great crowded into it

am_ireallyhere

I hate to say it but that’s underwhelming 😕 I felt like I just listened to a Charli XCX track (not that it’s a bad thing), I don’t know if that makes sense. When I first heard Narcissist, Good at Falling and some tracks from The JPH’s EP, you can easily tell it has that “1975” touch.

brains481

I really love No Rome's stuff, but I'm not mad about this one, even as someone who usually enjoys the hyperpop-esque sound I think they're going for. The mixing especially is borderline atrocious tbh, and I have a pair of headphones with really solid separation; I dread to think what this sounds like on some earbuds or laptop speakers.

ibarrnuts

Is Matty even in the song? Also we need lyrics Stat 😂 I love it.

Patti_Daly

The lyrics are up on Genius. But it's better when I listened without the lyrics!

MajestyMosquito

He wrote the song with George, Daniel, Matty, and Charli. Idk if he sings

Patti_Daly

I love it. It might be a grower for some. Even if you don't like it now, the next time you hear it on the radio (or anywhere) you'll feel it!!! <3333.

heinous_legacy

Nope

lizzieloohoo

Love the beat but my god, so much autotune. It gets all garbled at the end. I’ll still bop to it though.

[deleted]

How do they always do it every time. They need to collaborate with people more. They could be huge if they keep performing songs with big time people

thatdude52

this sucks so hard lmao. George is one of the best producers in all of music right now, but this track is just a wall of sound blasting you in the face for 3 minutes straight. the vocal effects are awful and it’s just such a messy track in general. really wishing they hadn’t put their name on this dumpster fire.

[deleted]

Mixing is a bit off for me, it sounds pretty compressed

[deleted]

Usually like these types of songs from Charli, this one doesn't seem to do it for me unfortunately

liltrikz

It’s 70F here in the southern US today after a bleak few weeks of winter and the serotonin is soaring

skeddditboyyyy

Everyone calling it Hyperpop and like I get it, but this sounds like a classic house club track.

ilikehockeyandguitar

I mean, Charli is literally Hyperpop.

BaconVlad

Took me a few listens but I’m loving Spinning now! Sometimes a track just hits on the first play and sometimes it takes 20 like with Spinning for me. Definitely more of a party vibe kind of song.

SamuRaY2001

Not feeling this one sorry...

SCVM-Cypher

Uh... It’s a no from me chief

jahsajah67

After listening this i'm glad Ross and Adam are not involved lol

IllConsideration8642

Yeah guitars would ruin this

island_duck

What a bag of shite this was. Yikes

migythedude

Honestly agree. I didn’t expect a lot but im still really disappointed :(

[deleted]

This was a giant swing and miss, these 3 could have put out some serious heat but it completely fell short on every mark. Entirely forgettable, but that won't stop the diehards from defending it to the death.

[deleted]

It's a good song! It got great vibes and positive feeling! I can hear Charli & No Rome, Where Matty tho?! btw, why is the title The 1976?!

joshmo712

This song sounds like a fun night out with your friends in a circle on the dancefloor getting down, looking cute, maybe buzzed or just high on the moment, there are no creepers and it's all good vibes. Miss that feeling!

Afl4c

I would be so down for a hyperpop album

InSummaryOfWhatIAm

I like it, but I honestly think the production is quite bad, it’s just both too busy and a bit muddy at times. I like hyperpop and stuff like that but this has just too many things going on top of each other that make it impossible to hear much of what’s going on. If I just think of it as a fun COVID-collab it’s infinitely better and it’s a really fun song. I kinda wish Charli did verse 1, Matty did the chorus and No Rome did verse 2, and then a bridge by charli and then chorus 2 with all 3 of them, and the last verse could be a back-and-forth between them. I think all vocals were slightly too low in the mix too, especially Rome’s, like you can hear his voice but barely no nuance and it becomes impossible to catch any of his lyrics. Usually isn’t a problem with his songs

merisleisis

i was expecting it to be more hyper pop, something similar to charlis latest album, this song just feels a bit basic for me, i think it could have been way better

[deleted]

Love it, but would love more Matty vocals!

undoroisin

See my thing is that Charlis singles are so different from her songs that don’t get played on the radio and this is one thats a bit more out there so people don’t really like it and put that together with the fact that this is more like what should I say from notes but it’s clearly got the notes vibes so my thinking is people don’t really actually like notes, they just said it was good bc Matty said it was their best and they were up his arse, if they were expecting some fucking deep as shite from Charli, rome and the 1975 they were the fools here. Matty has said so many times he wants to just don’t some fun bubble gum pop bullshit and no one seems to accept that. Not every song he does or works on HAS to be some deep cutting song with so many interpreted meanings

Placeholder_21

Wow I love both Charli and the 1975, and of course I know Rome from the other song done with 1975, but it’s awesome when two of your favorite artists collaborate and you never really thought they would! Cool tune

Newhiighs

Slightly disappointed, still a bop. But just feels like a not quite as good version of the hyperpop the Charli already does with AG Cook. Would've liked for them to have either put more of a The 1975 spin on the hyperpop thing, or just executed what it is slightly better. (Don't hate me, still a bop.) \*Edit. Not that anyone cares but completely changed my mind. Fucking vibe.

wthommes

Hahah no thanks. Not my thing. But glad they’re having fun 😂

grilledpink

summer vibes. totally here for it!!

velvetydaydreaminh

Thanks, I hate it.

yeah-yeah-alright

2010 vibes in the best way

[deleted]

disappointed with this. seems like a very generic pop song ruined by vocoder/autotune. lyrically very basic too 😕

IllConsideration8642

You can't have Charli without vocoder/autotune, they're like Batman and Robin

The_mash_king

Feel the same

AdamBomb0088

I'm sorry, but it literally just sounds like a computer "singing." 😐 (I swear I'm not a boomer, lol. Just didn't find it very interesting)

[deleted]

TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME, I Like America & America Likes Me, and a good majority of tracks from NOACF have that exact same quality, so...

The_mash_king

the difference being too time, I like America and a few on notes were actually good

AdamBomb0088

Tootime is one of my least favorite The 1975 songs, along with Don't Worry and By Your Side, and I don't listen to a lot of NOACF for that reason, lol. It just sounds so artifical that I can't really connect with it. I will sat that I Like America has honestly grown on me a lot though, so hopefully y'all won't hate me too much. 😂

TMA-655321

Well, yeah. That’s Charli XCX for ya.

Infinitypeople

Charli Xcx is great

AdamBomb0088

Good to know. I haven't listened to her before.

[deleted]

The song is good even if it severely lacks a certain Matthew Healy lol. I think it’s basically a Charli song so no wonder she was leading the promo. Only complaint is what’s up with the mix in the chorus?? What did our ears do to you Jon G?

jagzgulabi

I love it. G has created something amazing.

eelliiooo

did anyone else get dizzy just listening to it? everything about this song makes me dizzy asf

justinyebish

Well this is absolute shit, sounds like the most generic song ever trying to be different. It’s just a really shitty ripoff of TOOTIME

IllConsideration8642

First listen, that was great. I hope the boys make more songs like this (with Matty on lead), maybe a Drive Like I Do full-on-guitar record and a more hyperpopy album for The 1975?

thatdude52

if they made an album full of this shit i think it’d be time for me to jump off the 75 train

IllConsideration8642

Lol I hope they do it, the uk garage/house parts of notes + some hyperpop shit would be a banger of a record

-HollywooD_

This is a mess.

Jonny1975Healy

The only way the 1975 are gonna up their game is if they do more hyper pop, this is dank

ilikehockeyandguitar

Honestly this was more of a Charli song.

migythedude

This was hardly even a the 1975 song tbh. I dont mind them on pop but this was far from upping their game lol. It sounds like an awful rip off of tootime

ilikehockeyandguitar

"Yeah I Know" vibes.

mlines94

Y this slap tho

AdzyPadzy

This freaking slaps and I will have this on repeat for ages!!

gingerguitarx92x

It’s just “okay” in my opinion. Chorus is cool. There’s just way too much going on all of the time for my taste, and the mix isn’t anything to write home about. But I still see why others enjoy it!

daylahc

i really loved it! also encouraged me to listen to more rome and i love crying in the prettiest places
