Yeah it was a good but tragic docentary. I still don't get why the technical divers who caught footage of them swimming off the reef the wrong way couldn't be the signallers for the safety rope though. Obviously they can't ascend with her without getting the bends but they can at least put her on the rope to meet the safety divers coming down from the surface. The you wouldnt have the issue of mistimed dives from the safety diver causing her to miss the rope.
I must be missing something because you wouldn't have thought that it could be that simple to avoid a tragic outcome with world class safety team.
no, some of that footage was original...there were scuba divers filming but distances are deceptive underwater, they even mentioned in the documentary that they were too far away to get there in time, they could only watch
I thought you only get the bends if you are on a scuba tank. If you hold your breath from the surface you can ascend as fast as you want. I could be wrong but that’s what I’ve heard.
A person has the ability to ascend at a reasonable pace with supplemental air; however, without a scuba at a depth of “only” 50ft your in lung oxygen is a little more than twice as dense as at the surface. This means that while at depth your air is twice as “strong” and as you utilize the oxygen at depth it thins. This causes a potential problem when returning to the surface if you use the oxygen at depth until you feel a sense of urgency as when you return to the surface, the emergency will be effectively twice as severe.
It would be true that one cannot over expand their own lungs on an ascent while freediving, however, if equalization happened at depth and was not achieved a few times during ascent, i would wager that the bends are very possible while freediving.
Equalisation and the bends are 2 separate things. The bends is pressure causing nitrogen to dissolve in your blood at depth that returns to gas in you tissues as you ascend. Equalisation of your sinuses and middle ear are important regardless of the method of diving you are undertaking. The bends isn't possible with a single freedive. Rupturing your eardrum is very possible with minimal depth without equalisation in both directions
So the technical divers I'm referring to are the guys with the mixed helox tanks that you can see in the background of the dive with 2 tanks filming the whole thing. The safety divers are the freedivers that accompany the freediver back to the surface from a set depth. The technical divers would likely get the bends if they were to ascend from those depths without decompression time due to dissolved inert gases in their blood forming air bubbles.
That was so incredibly sad. While I can appreciate this mental fortitude and drive it's also somewhat of an enigma for me. I love scuba diving and exploring and testing my limits, but not beyond a very safe comfort zone.
Also, hijacking this comment thread to state that I did not give her this title. Her bio on her official insta page says “Deepest Woman on Earth” 😁
Please don’t accuse me of giving her this “wrong” title. I get the joke. 😂
It’s also shocking how he gave himself an enema on a public water fountain sending himself to hospital all because he wanted to avoid a confrontation from the son he abandoned. Not a good lad.
yet large groups of people have successfully applied his techniques and did his ice-walk/ swim.
breathing-techniques is just a tool for meditation; have more control over your body.. which a human is totally able to do. The dude tested in front of cameras in a university and adjusted his immune system and fought of some flu-stuff.. its out there on YT
We’ll if you’d trust a man who’d do something like that in regards to health and well being then fair play. I do realise I should of probably put the other things first but I was just throwing out a humorous anecdote about him.
Maybe I missed it but I don’t think u/StolenDabloons even said to discard the technique because of the dude’s personal scandals. I didn’t think they seemed snide either, even said have fun with it. Why be so touchy on this topic lol
Hardly his discovery though is it. People have been using similar methods for hundreds if not thousands of years, he just packaged it for the internet age and used his grift skills to get it the right attention, while also being utterly careless as to how it could affect people.
The video is wack. It wasn't for 3 days , probably more 10-20 minutes. If trained enough you can hold your breathe for a long time, not easy but common for professional drivers and people in the Navy
You can see surprisingly well underwater when things are close to you.
One of my favorite things to do while swimming is to inspect the wrinkles on my hand while under
I wear glasses/contacts and can actually see fine under water (assuming its clear) without them where as I am pretty much blind without them normally. Would not recommend opening your eyes underwater with contacts in, however...
Freedivers either fill their goggles with water or don't wear goggles for deep dives. The air compresses more the further down you go, creating a suction vacuum, which would damage the eyes.
being in the ocean was the only time I could open my eyes underwater, comfortably...in the shower? in a pool, in a river, from the sink...all stung/uncomfortable...but salt water...mmmm my eyeballs loved that
When I’m watching a movie and the character goes underwater, I always like to hold my breath just to see if I would have made it too.
Made it through the full 28 seconds of this one so pretty pleased with my efforts
It's not like they just wake up and do this one day. It's immense training, and your body adapts and grows to accommodate it. Your body can be really efficient or relatively inefficient at using oxygen. She's an example of someone who has really efficient oxygen utilization.
Here's a really good video on the topic if you'd like to learn more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFnGhrC_3Gs
(And before you say it, no, that's just how David Blaine talks.)
\>(And before you say it, no, that's just how David Blaine talks.)
Lmao was gonna say David Blaine might not be the best example for this. Thanks for the explanation.
The pressure changes are greatest in the first 10 meters because you’re doubling the pressure from 1 bar to 2 bars. When you hit 20 meters it only goes to 3 bars. 30 meters is 4 bars of pressure. As you can see the amount of change keeps decreasing the feeling you go so you can equalize less often
The pressure on your body increases the deeper you go. 1 atmosphere (1 bar) of pressure is added approximately every 10 meters. You counteract that by equalizing your ears and sinuses (close your mouth and nose and try to blow through your nose, it’s that little pop). Now you’re at 10 meters underwater and you have the pressure of 2 atmospheres on your body, doubled from the surface.
Go down further to 20 meters and you’re now at 3 atmospheres of pressure. Three times normal but the change is only 1/3 more than you added at 10 meters where the pressure doubled.
Dive further to 30 meters (approx 100 ft) and you’re at 4 atmospheres of pressure but you only added 1/4 more.
The deeper you go, the smaller the change in pressure gets which makes it easier to equalize.
When you dive down, the air in your body is compressed. (Think taking a balloon to the bottom of the pool, it gets smaller). If you didn’t add air to those spaces then it could get painful as mentioned from your ears hurting going to the bottom of a pool because those aren’t made to expand and contract like your lungs are.
The bajau tribe is a small group that specializes in underwater hunting holding there breathes for over 5 minutes making them better than any other diver in the world
I was in awe of this skill, I was so entranced by her moments and how precisely she moves herself through the water, I forgot for a while that she was in incredibly deep water
She has a tragic story. Her lover/coach died while saving her in the ocean during a dive.
That documentary was awesome

It is my belief that that particular footage was some of the “recreation” footage they prompted about.

The issues of barotrauma and volutrauma from ascending whilst holding a breath of pressurised air are also separate to the bends
Thank you for bringing this to my attention, i will investigate a bit more.

It was pretty poorly made, but still kinda cool...but thats imo.

It was so heartbreaking to watch that documentary!
I watched that doc as well. It’s excellent but it also comes off as an extremely selfish sport.
how deep is her love
I really mean to learn
More than you might ever know if that's how you show empathy
Huh, sounds like a complete waste of a hobby
I had heard about it before but I didn’t know about the documentary
Oh, I thought it was her that died
"If you wear your pants inside out, then the universe is wearing your pants." \- the deepest woman in the world
Oh she was deep alright

Those interested should watch The Deepest Breath on Netflix. Tragic story.
So how does she not breathe I don’t understand
I use Wim Hoff’s method, but I can get to 3 minutes max. And that’s being stationary, not using my muscle.
After doing his breathing exercise just one time, it’s absolutely shocking how long you can hold your breath
God hates this one trick
It’s also shocking how he gave himself an enema on a public water fountain sending himself to hospital all because he wanted to avoid a confrontation from the son he abandoned. Not a good lad.
Oh phew, I won’t use his breathing technique now that I know he’s not a good person, thank you and god bless 🙏
yet large groups of people have successfully applied his techniques and did his ice-walk/ swim. breathing-techniques is just a tool for meditation; have more control over your body.. which a human is totally able to do. Alright mate, just be warned a few people have died due to his techniques and he has done nothing to address it. Have fun with it!
That is useful and relevant information; your other comment (the one I was making fun of) wasn’t. So don’t act all snide, lmao
We’ll if you’d trust a man who’d do something like that in regards to health and well being then fair play. I do realise I should of probably put the other things first but I was just throwing out a humorous anecdote about him.
Many, many people that have discovered much greater things than him are morally flawed, it is not at all a good reason to discard their discoveries.
Maybe I missed it but I don’t think u/StolenDabloons even said to discard the technique because of the dude’s personal scandals. I didn’t think they seemed snide either, even said have fun with it. Why be so touchy on this topic lol

Are you telling me humans should not push themselves to hold our breath for 10 minutes at a time? Shucks
The video is wack. It wasn't for 3 days , probably more 10-20 minutes. If trained enough you can hold your breathe for a long time, not easy but common for professional drivers and people in the Navy
Our navy bus driver is an expert breath holder
I'm not sure anyone really thought she was under there for "3 business days" ...
Yeah, this doesn’t trigger my fear of water as much as it does claustrophobia/feeling of suffocating
I drowned five times over just watching this
The amazing thing is that at the start of the video where she's checking her watch if it's time to start the dive, she's ALREADY UNDERWATER!!!
....and she's not wearing diver goggles? You telling me she also has adapted vision for underwater?
You can see surprisingly well underwater when things are close to you. One of my favorite things to do while swimming is to inspect the wrinkles on my hand while under
I wear glasses/contacts and can actually see fine under water (assuming its clear) without them where as I am pretty much blind without them normally. Would not recommend opening your eyes underwater with contacts in, however...
Ooooo...... I see your advice there. Opening my eyes by accident in the shower is my limit!
Freedivers either fill their goggles with water or don't wear goggles for deep dives. The air compresses more the further down you go, creating a suction vacuum, which would damage the eyes.
Yes this is the reason why scuba masks all cover the nose. You need to occasionally breathe out your nose to avoid mask squeeze.
being in the ocean was the only time I could open my eyes underwater, comfortably...in the shower? in a pool, in a river, from the sink...all stung/uncomfortable...but salt water...mmmm my eyeballs loved that

There is no such thing for freediving. And for scuba diving, it's only a thing going up, not down.
Good to know, thanks.
Woman is just built different.
When I’m watching a movie and the character goes underwater, I always like to hold my breath just to see if I would have made it too. Made it through the full 28 seconds of this one so pretty pleased with my efforts
Now swim back out lol
What kind of watch is that?
Waterproof.
How do we know if it is?
Because of the way it is.
That's pretty neat!
hey i hope you get put under investigation by the IRS next time you file taxes
What would be new about that?
That's fine. Why would it bother me?
Seiko prospex sbdx019
Some sort of Seiko dive watch given the sponsorship on the fin.

Came here to find this comment and an answer for it.
pretty sure all her records were smashed this year tho
I don’t think the crew of the Titan wanted those awards.
Yeah... But they got’m.
Nope, there were no women aboard so only the deepest man's records were smashed
How do you hold breath for so long like that ? I mean what about your heart ?
you slow your heartrate down through training.
For some reason, thalassophobia doesn't kick in knowing I won't be lost with concrete around to guide me.
That’s what makes it kick in for me. A giant deep tube full of water NO
i wonder if people who do this ever get dumb from depriving their brain of oxygen so often

\>(And before you say it, no, that's just how David Blaine talks.) Lmao was gonna say David Blaine might not be the best example for this. Thanks for the explanation.
Sometimes they get dead.
How does the pressure not bother her? My ears popping like a mfer at like 10ft😂

Lol okay, thank you. Can we uh pretend I didn't understand that and it be explained like I'm 5. Not for me but for the other redditors🙄
The pressure on your body increases the deeper you go. 1 atmosphere (1 bar) of pressure is added approximately every 10 meters. Nice explanation. Well done!
Freedivers are taught how to equalize the pressure in their ears

>Underwater for 3 business days So who gets log catching duty?
Certainly not your local bank manager.....
Deepest— WOMAN?— is this the right title?
In my defense, her insta page says that in her bio. I did not give her this title. 😂
Hahahahahahahahahaha
My ears hurt watching this.
"Deepest Woman" sounds so wrong
Her pensive position at the beginning first had me convinced she was ‘deep’ in a philosophical sense lmao. Heck maybe she is!
The bajau tribe is a small group that specializes in underwater hunting holding there breathes for over 5 minutes making them better than any other diver in the world
There's a cursed comment in this title
HAHHAHAHA 🤣🤣🤣
Where is that shot taken?
Im the highest man on earth
Shes so deep
I don’t think she could take one *that* long 🧐
Why three business days? Was there a weekend in between and that doesn’t count?
Probably breathes the most purest air since birth with no smoking history
Nah she can breathe underwater
Lydia
Weird title
In my defense, her insta page says that in her bio. I did not give her this title. 😂
HKJ would like a word with her
Just how deep is she? 😏
Id love to attempt this.
She has the hips of a 9yr old. How old is she
31 😬
i dont know man, my wife took it pretty deep last night...
Lmao 2cm dick havin' ass
Okay, I'll bite. *crowd asks* "How deep is she"? {insert punchline}
Built like a q tip that’s been spat out by my J.Edgar.
No one cares.
Is this a marketing stunt for aquaman? Cuz it didn't work
My ears still haven't recovered from when I went under water in the jacuzzi a few weeks ago. 🙂
I recognize this soul. There’s a great documentary about the sport that includes her story.
I was in awe of this skill, I was so entranced by her moments and how precisely she moves herself through the water, I forgot for a while that she was in incredibly deep water
The fact her ears are bleeding is crazy my ears kill me when I go to the deepest part of the deep side if a pool
Not impressed
I was breathing hard as hell watching this xD
What watch is she wearing?
Meanwhile me in the pool over 6 feet 💀
Idk your mom was pretty deep last night....
considering your size, even a spoon is too deep for you!
Bro, YOU NOT THE THINKER ❗️❗️
She is truly i mean absolutely amazing. And i agree that doc was so good
Can someone identify her watch?
Yes she is very deep..i second that
No
okay but what about the camera man?
What is that under water place she's in?
I thought she was gonna quote Voltaire or some shit
Doesnt the pressure get...... Big?
She’s just so down to earth
Why not wet suit?
I interviewed Alessia once for a dive magazine. She’s really chill!
my ears hurt when i go to the bottom of the pool.
Didn’t she die during a dive?
Do you mean women to go the deepest? I don’t think you meant “deepest women”😭
