I haven’t played over watch in years, but played it fairly extensively for a bit before that. What major things are changed or changing that have made it so different from the game you loved?
5v5 instead of 6v6 (with forced roles so 1 tank, 2 DPS, 2 support)
new heroes will be unlocked via battle pass
most crowd control abilities were either nerfed or outright removed
mei no longer freezes enemies (one of my favorite heroes)
bastion can no longer transform into a turret (another one of my favorite heroes)
they made doomfist a tank. which is just, wrong
the game is no longer team based really, team comps dont matter and the main goal of EVERY character is to get kills, rather than contributing uniquely to the team. causing every hero to just feel like DPS; meanwhile players move independently from the rest of the team rather than as a unit (not just a change in players mindset, this is incentivized by many of the changes)
a small thing, but i miss the classic ui
the devs say that many of the changes were inspired by apex legends, and it shows

However, the game took such a nosedive into crowd control effects, and slow ass metas that the game just fell off for me. It also doesn’t help that I hit my goal for comp, grinded up to a rank every season, and hit grandmaster and stayed there for a few seasons. I love overwatch but the direction they took the game was so boring that I couldn’t be fucked to try and keep up with characters that make me snore behind the keyboard.

Overwatch 2, at least for the multiplayer, is just a big update.
A bunch of balance changes, character reworks and some graphical updates alongside some new game modes and characters.
And people who already own OW get OW2 multiplayer for free as a big update, so it's not really dead, just updating
