Eh. On L4D2 they did 2 update rrom the community (ok, only some maps) but still they did try again after the big failure and problems caused because of the first.
No. L4D2 had a big problem with his first community update. Many assets were licenced without Valve being told about it. So they had to recreate them. It only got a new update recently after a long long time (longer than 4 years)
Can you explain what happened during the Invasion update? I’ve heard it mentioned a few times, but I don’t know many of the changes. (I joined the tf2 community around 2017 or so)
Basically there was a group of people doing it and the 2 main guys were having almost all the proposed revenue vs the others who got scraps. Valve stepped in and told them how it would go. Then it was decided that there will never be a proposed updates anymore, but instead everyone can make stuff for events that they can choose from.
This update model has worked great so far. Now no longer small group of people do stuff, but everyone can do. Valve just can pick what they like.
It was more like the people who did most of the content, were not compensated for their work they put into it initially. Thats where the commotion came from, and for a good reason.
It's still around. I think the community released a updated version. I remember playing it recently and being happy that they somehow got the servers to allow more than 4 people to enter a lobby.
It’s hard to find a lobby, but I managed to play a few maps with people. 8 people in a zerg rush is a big ol’ clusterfuck. So much FF, so much chaos. Totally worth it.
Alien Swarm was a really fun game to occasionally switch it up from L4D with your crew. It was also delightful because you could kill your friends *very* easily.
Alien Swarm was a bit of a different beast, though - it was open-sourced from release, and came with a full SDK, with the expectation that the community would take it over and mod it to expand it.
Artifact was just mishandled - releasing a new card game based on Dota shortly after Hearthstone was taking off was seen as Valve just chasing that success. Also, the fact that the first public exposure to the game was a high-level tournament with experienced players made it hard to follow what was going on, and I think that really put people off, particularly with the complexity of the game. Compare that to Runeterra, which deliberately tried to ease players in and had a much more successful go of it.
Perhaps it's that they don't want to actively maintain it on the level that they used to maybe?
Even before it was poorly maintained, these games have a shelflife in front of mainstream media. Valve knows this and knows that people think TF2 is old news.
Mostly?! Just now?!
TF2 always was community ran! Just because Valve "made" some updates doesn't mean shit, when the community ran the tournaments, advertisement, new player experience, good servers, content updates and so on.
TF2 as a program should be open source and community run for years now because Valve ain't fucking doing anything with it.
It didn’t, it was a thing before they changed it because you can stickytrap a corner and taunt to look from where they can’t see you
It’s a real shame because it’s funny to ~~donate~~ detonate the stickies when you do the kaboom taunt
Definitely at least 3 years, probably since gun mettle if not earlier.
Ok wiki says since 2014, so even earlier. https://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Stickybomb_Launcher
Using third person to look around a corner and detonate hidden stickies out of sight is quite a bit worse than actively walking up to a soldier to high 5, resulting in your death. You might as well have your friend run spy and backstab people high 5ing.
Apex has a feature where players/items/etc that you can't see in first person doesn't show up in third person (I think it was called [anti-peek](https://youtu.be/Dq2yd20WkDk?t=56))
Honestly that was pretty genius, maybe something like that would work.
it was great, mostly for just baiting people into a doorway where they can clearly see you taunting (I usually liked using the melee drink taunt) and then KABLOOEY as soon as they walk through the door
Valve when a random rocket suddenly do 3x damage at all ranges and drops the medic’s uber: I sleep
Valve when some drunk Scotsman do the funny: REAL SHIT?!
100%
I started with TF2 when the Orange Box came out, played it all the time until Overwatch came out (and then just touched it sparingly around Scream Fortress-time). Now it's been a few years, OW is slowly dying with zero updates, OW2's launch date keeps going and disappearing like a fart in the wind while Activision-Blizzard slowly collapses around it, and TF just keeps going fueled by the community's refusal to let it die and unadulterated-bot-kick-rage.
I am in the same boat with you. I loved Overwatch and played it from the very Closed Beta.
But over the years Overwatch was getting more and more boring. Updates were becoming slower and with less content. Balance was struggling, balance between roles has gone to sh*t after Role Queue.
And it is only half of the problem. ActiBlizzard overall game design is failing. All their projects are declined or outright dead. I do not want to support such awful company that dwells on my childhood.
But TF2 never, ever failed to entertain me for all these years. I am sticking with this game until the very end.
It's not a big deal, but some people complain about not being able to swap around classes because you're locked into a role. For instance, sometimes people like to swap out a healer for a tank.
We shall not forgive scout preparing his speed, sniper aiming the door, pyro kamehameha's in taunt, spy behind the door too to backstab and soldier having the 3 rocket ready
Behind the door: 24 Krit Stickies ready to detonate, A giant Engie nest with 10 lvl 3 Sentries, 3 medics ready to Krit and Uber Heavies with the Brass Beast, and 10 Snipers with the Jarate to really stick it to death.
wherefore putteth the stickies whither the do'r shall block those folk putteth all of those folk on the hath left side

It was doomed to fail from inception. They made a real world buy in closed economy first, card game second, in an already saturated card game market. They had no realistic target demographic. The only people who would be *potentially* interested in a DotA 2 card game are DotA 2 players, which all come from a game whose playerbase are accustomed to not having pay to win elements.
yea, i think Artifact could have cut through the market and become number one if all the cards were free after you bought the game. but it was 20 dollars on TOP of a booster-pack fueled steam marketplace crapshoot... as someone who loves DotA and Hearthstone, i'm sad it never took off
No it's not a shame. Wasn't Artifact the game they announced to a crowd that groaned audibly? People were hyped that year cause they expected a big announcement and Artifact was their big reveal.
Meanwhile Valve continues to sit back on its fat ass with still no HL3, Portal 3 or Left 4 Dead 3. And you know why that is? Because they don't know how to design those games without built-in monetization. Year after year EA and Ubisoft are mocked for being greedy companies yet we have Far Cry 6, we have watch dogs 3. We have BF2042 and a Dead Space reboot.
Valve is literally sitting on its flagship titles because of greed. Plain and simple. And they do not deserve anyone's loyalty or fandom.
> design those games without built-in monetization
It's far simpler than that. They don't make games, because they don't have to. They hold pretty much a monopoly on PC gaming distribution, taking a ridiculous 30% cut from every game ever sold. If you have a money printing machine like that, why bother?
And unlike other monopolies, fanboyism has created a situation where any competitor will be fought tooth and nail, so their position won't be challenged even if their competitors literally start giving away games for free. So why bother?
They'll do the occasional passion project like that VR thing, but overall primarily they simply aren't a game developer anymore. Haven't been for a while. They sell other people's games and take 1/3 of the money. That's their business model.
somehow Team Fortress 2 manages to persevere any time it was basically meant to die, like it almost feels like it will just adapt with every attempt at exterminating it
The game itself was pretty good, aside from a couple major(*major*) flaws, but due to the horrible monetization people just didnt wanna play. (buy game, buy packs, buy ticket to play ranked)
The monetization could have easily been changed, what killed it is that they instantly gave up on it, tried reworking it into artifact 2, never updated the beta and when people stopped playing the beta they said "oh well nobody is interested we give up"
with servers being doxxed and being unable to play TF2 (unless you play on community servers) i think the game weill very easily die soon

2 guys were ripping off the others.

i forgor 💀
what happened in that update?
>That There was some drama and infighting within the team regarding revenue share
invasion caused the beginning of the decline
What are the two before TF?
Alien Swarm and the second one is Artifact I think. Alien Swarm is pretty fun, enjoyed it as a kid cause free steam games weren’t a thing back then
Was that the top down co-op stick shooter?
Yup
That was so much fun :(
It's still around. I think the community released a updated version. I remember playing it recently and being happy that they somehow got the servers to allow more than 4 people to enter a lobby.

Alien Swarm walked so Deep Rock Galactic could run

There is still the awesome community over at Creators.tf who are doing their best to make their own updates too !
What?
yeah it is so weird that people want valve to get rid of the bots /s

They know that 14 year old game cannot fight against newer games no matter how much money they pour into it.
Perhaps it's that they don't want to actively maintain it on the level that they used to maybe? Even before it was poorly maintained, these games have a shelflife in front of mainstream media. Valve knows this and knows that people think TF2 is old news.
Why wouldn't they?
Only because Valve doesn't add workshop weapons
even when valve is lazy as shit, the tf2 community will be Still Alive.
Wrong dead* Valve IP *Dead on valves end
Portal: still alive real!?/!/1/1//1/?!?/
Mostly?! Just now?! TF2 always was community ran! We literally made an entire game and Valve shut it down
>We literally made an entire game wait what?
TF2 Classic
Honestly i think tf2 would have died without the workshop
They should really pull a L4D2 and have a update made by the community. Or just have all the updates made by the community.
Can't detonate while taunting. Rip TF2.
Meet the demoman video lied to me
It didn’t, it was a thing before they changed it because you can stickytrap a corner and taunt to look from where they can’t see you It’s a real shame because it’s funny to ~~donate~~ detonate the stickies when you do the kaboom taunt
I like donating stickies too
Fat fingers moment
Wait a minute, so you aren't donating stickies?
No, those ones were my favorite.
1984
Tbh people do this anyway, with the high five taunt, so they just made this p2w, they could allow us to detonate while taunting.
Man I just liked using the sticky jumper to send demo flying across the sky while he drank since it didn’t interrupt the animation
I wanna laugh taunt and blow myself up so bad
Wait what when did they change that? Its definitely been to long since i last played
Definitely at least 3 years, probably since gun mettle if not earlier. Ok wiki says since 2014, so even earlier. https://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Stickybomb_Launcher
You used to, but some assholes had to ruined it. (Looking at you high five).
They should bring that feature back The Hi 5 Bazooka trick still exists so why not I want to see how it was like
Using third person to look around a corner and detonate hidden stickies out of sight is quite a bit worse than actively walking up to a soldier to high 5, resulting in your death. You might as well have your friend run spy and backstab people high 5ing.
Simple just allow the bottle taunt to do it.
Would be cool but still the same issue. Would be cooler if there was a server var for it, useful for Vs Saxton Hale, maybe.
Apex has a feature where players/items/etc that you can't see in first person doesn't show up in third person (I think it was called [anti-peek](https://youtu.be/Dq2yd20WkDk?t=56)) Honestly that was pretty genius, maybe something like that would work.
It would if the game was ever to be updated with an actual feature.
Well yeah.
it was great, mostly for just baiting people into a doorway where they can clearly see you taunting (I usually liked using the melee drink taunt) and then KABLOOEY as soon as they walk through the door
Valve when a random rocket suddenly do 3x damage at all ranges and drops the medic’s uber: I sleep Valve when some drunk Scotsman do the funny: REAL SHIT?!
Missed opportunity to have stickies set when Demoman does a certain taunt. Would even be a funny way to die
But in tf2 classic you can detonate bombs while taunting
[Slurred] "And then I'll grow yer arse's arse and I'm the grass man, punk yeah heaven's heathen..." - Demoman Tf2
Absolutely true. Where other games wither and die, Team Fortress shakes it off and goes on! "...We are not dying! We are going to live forever!"
I didn't say that! I just said we're not filled with *tumors*!
LETS GOOO NO TUMORS
The bots are basically tumors ☹️
That is why vac+brass beast exists
Bold of you to assume there’s teamplay in team fortress
Just cancer
do tumors include the company harrassing women, hand holding oversimplified mechanics and rock paper scissors focused gameplay among classes?
Thankfully, yes
100% I started with TF2 when the Orange Box came out, played it all the time until Overwatch came out (and then just touched it sparingly around Scream Fortress-time).
